People laugh at me when I say that this is my favorite movie. But it is. It's a rarified quality of filmmaking. It works on so many levels. On one hand, it's possible to enjoy it without knowing any of the references. On the other hand, the fact that pretty much every scene in the film contains some sort of reference while still forming a cohesive story is almost unbelievable. Think about most movies that try to reference and parody pop culture: they're usually complete trash, with the references taking the place of storytelling while mocking their source materials. In SotD, Wright offers a really solid, and sometimes even emotionally powerful narrative while also weaving in hundreds of references (many more than this video identifies) to other films. That shows how much Wright and Pegg genuinely love the pop culture they reference in this film.
Well said!

He was also a big fan of people who did not breath aka zombies hence the movie . Also the "zombies" were actually breathing people called background actors who were fans of spaced tv show who were told to audition at fan meet of the show
Are you kidding with the Dart Board...
It was because Lucy Davis played Dianne in SotD who threw the dart at Shaun, and she was the one who said "Don't throw that at my head" in The Office. Martin Freeman is also in both of them
Little did you know that these were all just coincidences and Elgar just takes the credit...
The dart board and pool cue attacks in the Winchester are a throwback reference to the Darts Night poster and "Killer" pool tournament advertised on the wall when Shaun is drowning his sorrows earlier in the film.
Most of these were pretty spot on, well done! One of my favorite movies, a cult classic for sure and now we see why! It was an amalgamation of edgar wrights love for zombie flicks.
Happy 15th anniversary of Shaun of the Dead!
Holy crap has it been that long?! Now i feel OLD xD still my favourite movie after all these years.
Aaron Watson one of the all time greys for sure
With Shaun waking up in the morning I always took that more of a reference to the opening of Day of the Dead with the iconic shot of the zombie missing the lower part of his jaw. Which is also the first zombie we see in Day of the Dead. So there's a parallel between being introduced to our major characters in both films, Shaun in Shaun of the Dead and the zombies in Day of the Dead
The slow moving feet in that scene, is done in Spaced, and is a reference to One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest.
You did your research.! Top notch script and editing!
I’m not sure how quoting record names is a reference...
You completely missed the dawn of the dead music that was used when shaun and Ed were planning their rescue/escape.
It's because in 28 Days Later and it's sequel 28 Weeks Later THEY ARE NOT ZOMBIES! They aren't undead, they aren't seeking human flesh to consume...they are NOT zombies.
I agree that it could be considered a parody. But I really feel like this one was so much more than just a parody. I mean there's obvious moments that are clearly parody of something that came before. But parody to me seems to be more like making fun of something. And while Shaun of the Dead absolutely pokes fun at many zombie films and for sure definitely makes references to other zombie films especially Romero but I've always seen Shaun of the Dead as a standalone comedy about zombies that pays more homage to zombie films that came before. I think it's more than a parody. Other than that this video is awesome. Actually even including that the videos awesome but I digress, Edgar Wright's movies are just packed full of small little details like this and I freaking love it so thank you for pointing out even more that I'd never noticed myself
How did you miss the “Don’t Stop Me Now” song by Queen
That’s not a reference. That’s like hearing someone open a door and saying it’s a reference to doors.
Trixmay 988 yet they counted the end credits song as a reference?
@@TvReferences Well because it was the song playing in another zombie movie, so it was a reference to that movie... Then the Queen song You're My Best Friend begins with the lyric "you make me live" which is a reference to the fact that Nick Frost's character (Pegg's best friend) is undead
Felix Dawson What about when then we’re going through the records, all of those songs counted as references why wouldn’t “Don’t Stop Me Now”? (Got you there like)

I don't think you can call crash zooms references, or say they're "now" part of Edgar's style, when he was doing them years earlier in the show that inspired Shaun (and years before that, in Dead Wright)

The pub is also named after a pub in Bournemouth where Edgar Wright went to uni
You see this shadow? Well this this other film also has shadows

You forgot Don't Stop Me Now by Queen
here's a genuine one. The pub is named "The Winchester" this is a reference to the 1894 model Winchester in Night of the Living Dead, which is then the gun used by Shawn later in the movie
The day of the dead reference at 04:20 (in the movie) is in relation to the zombie at the start of DOTD who's missing a jaw (hence shaun's open mouth)
