THE BOX METHOD | CONSTRUCTION FOR ARTISTS PT.2
So I wanted to talk a bit deeper on the box method I mentioned in the last video. I wanted to show how useful it can be to apply and also show you how to make a physical model to better apply the method. I did ramble a bit more this video so please excuse that haha, but I do sincerely hope yall learned something and even try making a model of your own!

This is a good tutorial but you shouldn't really use a trapezoid for the pelvis even for heavy bottom characters - just use a wider cuboid. The problem is you are putting a hip just under the illiac spine which is totally anatomically incorrect - hip is way into the back. That's why your hips look so thin in the drawing you did around 17 minute. Box method is great but take a better look how the box is describing the pelvis anatomically. Cheers!
OHHH OKAYYY, I see what you mean. Another good way of putting it would be pushing the hip upwards more (if you're looking at it from a frontal view). This isn't something id considered till now haha, the main idea of using the trapezoid was to get a good silhouette of the hips without losing the stomach line. For either method Ig its just a matter of remembering how and where to adjust your placements when drawing. But thanks for the feedback, Ill continue to learn myself ;)!
@@qtpatrol sure - you can adjust to any shape :D I like rectangle more because quad muscle attach to the pelvis in the straight down from illiac spine so having the line down you now exactly where top of the leg joins. But you can just draw straight vertical lines from top corners - these are very useful. Keep up the good work!
@@pitrek121g TYTY, ill keep that in mind. Ive exhausted alot of time into learning shoulder and the front upper torso anatomy without considering the tricks I could use for the lower half, Ill use your recommendations for my studies in the future! :)
Elaborate please, are you talking about the greater trochanter, or something else
@@achievementart yes, a pelvis is the widest at the height of greater trochanters when standing (I am talking about the pelvis area of the human being not the bone itself 😅) and these are in around half of the box while looking at the side of the body. In the video it was like these are at the front of the pelvis
fuck it we goin square

simple and relatable! as someone who continuously struggling with body structure, videos like this are so revealing, there's never enough you know. keep it up
I FEEL THE SAME! The path of learning is a long and never ending one so you gotta be open to the process B). Thx for the support!
What a great video! I was trying to wrap my head around the box construction for so long and you made it so easy! Thanks!
THIS is good. As someone who has struggled a lot with intuitively grasping construction and translating it into a finished figure, your tutorials are VERY much needed and appreciated. Many artists don't realize how quickly these basic ideas just click for them, so your effort to break it down, and dig deeper is a big deal. Looking forward to even more!
Agree.
Thanks a bunch! I realized a while ago that I was struggling to apply these concepts myself so I wanted to find ways to both understand and make them easier to understand aswell. Art can be a struggle even when it looks easy, biggest part is learnijg all the little tricks and tips ;)

Same (I’m a woman)
This really helped me with consistency in my characters 💙
the way the pictures progressed to a good sketch with just a few lines is amazing
Thank you so much lately I've been trying too understand construction and how to apply methods. I have been using the circle method but it was very hard for me to understand it. And actually apply it to my art. But I've been using this method and I have been able too see it. I also struggle with making my characters too thick or too thin. I love this tutorial and it helped me so much. You've gained a subscriber. ❤❤❤❤❤❤
This is the most detailed and most comprehensive explanation I’ve seen yet
Honestly I have always loved art mostly animation and I have always wanted to get better and after watching this it just seems fun this method is just fun to see so thank you for making this it was a pleasure and I hope you can continue helping others like you did for me
for sure, learning is the biggest part, and you never wanna stop doing it
Just found this video but will say just seeing you wearing the boxes actually helped me understand a lot of where I was messing up with this method
THIS AS THE VIDEO IT TOOK FOR ME TO SEE IT AND MAKE IT MAKE SENSE!! THANK YOU OH MY GOD
this is probably the most helpful vid I've come across thx.
Damn, this is fun tutorial, and i'm hooked with your explanation. This is what i need, thank you!
i just saw the pt 1 you are good at explaining things
Thanks I try my best! I just gotta figure out how to make these videos a bit shorter and faster is all haha
now I'm in love with your boxy figure. it was so squary and visual!
actually very good and simple. thank you!
Loving the box 2 piece, it really compliments your Figure
tyty, its designer in fact
Thank you bro. You've helped me alot!
dang, how creative to explain how box method works
Absolute best. Preaching the words of the almighty Glen Vilppu.
Hope it continues this is really good! Congratulations on 500+ subs🎉
Thanks so much!!!
I've gradually taken the approach of construction being a thing derived automatically from contour and cross-contour studies, rather than a defined "method". It's true that having the planes of the box is helpful as a way to make the form crisp and spot some errors, but the more often you follow the contour, the more you automatically spot the landmarks on each part of the contour, so as long as you're observing a lot of real stuff and studying it from many angles and applying cross-sections, you always end up having the planes and relationships in your head. And then construction is just a matter of whether you want to let the contours drift into impressionism or if you want them tightened up to present depth of perspective and photoreal proportions. I'm following along little with these boxes, though, and it's odd how much I can feel the muscle memory of my study approach kicking in as soon as I start following the contour of the box and saying "oh, it's this configuration, so then make this kind of motion and that's about what the pelvis will look like in that angle." It's like looking at an apple and immediately writing "apple".
Exactly, good point twhich you made that I forgot to add in about contours. Its important to remember that the body has tons of them and very little flat areas, esp in the front of the torso. There are some areas which are tempting to draw flat with the planes like the collarbones when in actuality, it depends on the style and or realism. I use cross contour every so often, but normally for the limbs OR if my torsu structure feels off (like muscle, breasts, etc). Might be a good thing to make notes on in the future ╥﹏╥. Noice catch :3!
This is suck an awesome method. Thank you so much for the explanation and figure creation !! Cheers!
I sure do love watching content about 3D modelling
Thank u! this is very helpful!
Thanks for the video. I really want to improve in that area of the body
Your video was very informative and useful for me), thank you, I was very surprised how you came up with the idea to make a model for drawing, I'll try to make it myself. Thanks to the recommendations of KZhead, greetings from Russia, good luck in the development of the channel.
Really good tutorial, I just started to learn digiArt yesterday and learning how to draw pose. I just try to follow along some tutorials without really understand about the box thing. This tutorial really helpful for me, and now I'm learning how to draw the box to help me to draw pose better. Thanks!
Hope you learned alot! Learning is a constant cycle so sometimes its hard to find a good resource. Its good to keep studying irregardless tho!
@@qtpatrol Yes, today is my 5th day of learning and I'm still trying to get used to pentab while drawing difficult poses and shapes. Sometimes it feels like what I draw is different from the example, but I know that I just need to draw and learn more, Thank you!
That’s a great idea to wear box to show how to use a box for posing and perspective great video 👍👍👍👍

i actually just Recently Discover this too Awesome... Been Using Blender Free Models (the Humanoid Ones, and Been Using a Box and Try to see Where Things Fall, Just to have a Better Understanding of Things... of course they are just Simply Posing a Default Pose... but its Good to see that it can Scale if Done Propertly... i did Learn a Lot - i learn Where the Shoulder Goes on - how Should i think about the Skin - Think about Push and Pull (if its Pulling it Should Show Bone - otherWise Show Fat/Skin... But Respect the Bone Cause that is the Reason its Pushing Forward in the First-place).... Hmmm and Also Understanding More Complex Posing - What Happens When it Hides from you... Try to "Aproximate" as Best you can.... Since Experience Comes in Handy... but Relying on the Basic Shapes Helps A Lot since you are Shooting Blind all the Time, and Brings in Muscle memory into Account (Since you are Seeing the Same Pose Over Over Over again you can Re-use Poses... ETC.ETC.ETC

when you yourself is an art lol, thanks for this guide
finally!!! someone who thinks like me!!! thnks!!!!
This method works great, but what Ive learned from my experiences in art college is a method I prefer! Basically you make a simple boxy shape of the overall pose, then add an oval for the ribcage, a triangle up to the neck, and then lil triange undies. From there you can add the butt right underneath those undies (since it hangs lower than the front) and easily finish the pose. Doing this has made my gesture work insanely fast, and I was able to complete 100 gestures in a single day because of it, with 45 sec-1min for each (which definately was not needed due to procrastination :D)
Actually sounds really cool! You happen to have a link to like an imgur or a video demonstration that shows this method?
Ditto on asking for a short video explanation/demonstration lol. The triangle is for the neck (shoulders up)? Or does it go further?
would definitely like a demonstration
Me too
Pretty good
This is actually the first time I've seen a guy in a box on KZhead. Neat.

you are a goat for this! if its too much to ask pls dont worry about it, just was curious if you would be willing to put all the pictures of the model you may have taken, that werent included in the video, into like a doc. or imgur and link in desc so we could practice on them? Great vid btw

i’ve been using these methods for a while now but it never really ‘clicked’ for me. thank you for the tutorial hopefully i’ll finally get it down with this!
For sure for sure, lmk how it goes and if you have any questions I can help with!
The video picture got our guard down
Thank. You.
me feeling happy to see u before you get more famous in the future: 😇
If you want a accurate representation put the rib cage and pelvis into the boxes it helps when visualize the figure in the boxes. So when practicing drawing boxes try using a different color pencil to line out the rib cage and pelvis. The pelvis is have a shorter box vs the ribcage one you are done practicing that for a few days then box out your favorite character poses then you can start to see it come together just by using boxes because you already have visual knowledge of drawing the ribcage and pelvis. Hope this help those inspiring artists
ayo them shapes
I'm late but I do wanna ask, do you have the measurements for the model? I'm currently trying to make one right now and it would be great to not have to blindly follow from what I see. Anyway, big kudos for the video, it helped me learn a lot about the basic of construction!
I really loved this, I’m actually trying the boxed method myself. I use to hate it because I thought it was to technical, especially when people start drawing extra excessive lines for the planes. I be completely lost. Lol. Do you think you do clothes next ?
I will be hoenst, Im not the best at drawing fabric yet so I gotta study a little more haha. But in the future id love to do clothes, or like how I observe them anyways!
@@qtpatrol ooh same, I hardly pass learning the construct of the body. Can you do males ?
