And when there came a lion, or a bear, and took a lamb from the flock, I went after him and struck him and delivered it out of his mouth. And if he arose against me, I caught him by his beard and struck him and killed him. Your servant has struck down both lions and bears ~1 Samuel 17:34-36

The tiger, in a moment of desperation attacked the weakest part of the circle. In one clean sweep with the paws he beheaded one hunter and killed another. They could never catch him again.

  • I've heard a conflicting version of the Tiger's revenge story. Markov was hunting and stumbled upon an abandoned boar carcass. He decided to take that as he was hungry and poor but the tiger didn't take too kindly to that and basically trashed his little cabin in the woods. Markov managed to wound it before seeking help but was turned away by everyone out of fear of the Tiger's wrath. Markov went back home and was killed by the Tiger. The same Tiger killed at least one more person before some hunters ended up killing it a little later to prevent more deaths. Moral of the story? Poaching is bad but sometimes, just like other animals, Humans have to do what they need to to survive... Especially when you live in poor region of Russia where Tiger and Human populations overlap. Markov wasn't the bad guy from what I understand, just an unfortunate soul who made a really bad decision that cost him his life.

In the locals living in Eastern Siberia, from Asian phenotype and animist have a saying that stealing the prey of a tiger (the Siberian version...the hugest model) is being a fool and invoking a death sentence upon oneself. The local Shaman said: "Because tigers maybe just animals with no rifles but what they do have are a very particular set of skills, skills they have acquired over a very long evolution. Skills that make them a nightmare for people like unaware poachers and hunters. If they let the prey go alone, that'll be the end of it. Tigers will not look for them, they will not pursue them. But if the poachers don't, the tigers will look for them, they will find them, and they will kill them." Now that I remember, the Shaman was looking a bit like Liam Neeson

Who'd have thought that minus working on an orange plantation, orange could be a colour of camouflage? It was said that tigers have this tendency to harbor hatred when they are messed with, and would hunt the offender until they're dead. This is what happened the poacher, and I remember even hearing a saying that if you mess with a tiger, you're already done for no matter what. If I remember it correctly, or maybe its another story, I think it was cut short and after the incident the tiger went on a rampage killing many more people before it was successfully hunted and put down. Correct me if Im wrong with any of this, I watched that video after a long while forgot its title.

  • Apparently tigers are actually really well camouflaged amongst green plants since to most animals green and orange look exactly the same, we just have weird freaky ape eyes

  • They're also ridiculously intelligent hunters... However smart you might think you are, you *will* underestimate a tiger. Don't be their prey. :P There is a great book about Vladimir Markov and the tiger who killed him, titled simply "Tiger". I would highly recommend it to anyone interested in learning about the cats or about the extreme backwater parts of Russia. I don't remember the author's name off the top of my head. And funnily enough, tigers in zoos that actually *are* well-looked after and happy (zoos like that do exist!) are often very friendly animals. Much more than other wild cats. Doesn't mean they won't still eat you...

    • I read that book. It is absolutely awesome and is packed with so much information about tigers, as well as life in the remote wildlands of far eastern Siberia in general. It's one of my favorite books and I recommend it to anyone.

  • Tigers really are magnificent and powerful beings and they should be protected and treated with respect. What would also really help the wild population is if we brought all the Tigers that are been bred in Texas and put them in the wild. And speaking of magnificent predators that should also be treated with respect can you do a video about the Mako shark?

  • TIGER ARMY SHIRT!!!! You have no idea how stoked I am to see that! I got to seem them in Colorado Springs at a small venue when I was a freshman in HS and it was the best show I've ever been to in my life! I was obsessed with them at the time and got to to go with a bunch of friends who were also fans, so it was just an incredible experience. I've gotta go back and listen to them again, I love me some psychobilly.

  • I think the "king of the jungle" as applied to lions may have been for the (now) much-rarer Asiatic Lion, which was found throughout Iran and India, but is only found in a small park in India.
