Things You Only Notice In Back To The Future After Watching It More Than Once

Back to the Future is one of the great movies of the 1980s, and its sequels continued its story in fine fashion. It's frequently cited as a favorite film, and for good reason - the more you focus on the way these films are put together, the more you realize how thoughtful every filmmaking decision was. BTTF frequently makes allusions to outside events, and it likes to sneakily reveal future narrative events long before they occur. Issues like nostalgia and abuse are handled with great care and thoughtfulness, and you can't help but admire the film the more for this. These are thing you only nice in Back to the Future after watching it more than once.

    • 1.) The Hill Valley Courthouse became the Department of Social Services. 2.) Doc Brown nearly starts a fire when he runs a model of the car onto an oily rag, causing a fire. Perhaps his obsession with dangerous experiments caused the Brown mansion to burn down, (only his garage remained). 3.) The Twin Pines Mall became the Lone Pine Mall. 4.) Goldie Wilson's name is eerily similar to 1985 Philadelphia Mayor Wilson Goode's. All these things I noticed the SECOND TIME I had seen the film!

    • @@davidharrison3711 When the model car catches fire and runs into the oily rag, Doc puts it out with the water-filled fire extinguisher. When he does this, he uses all of the remaining water in it. It's a hint that he's not too concerned about fire preventative measures until there is a fire, which indicates in the news clipping of how fire destroyed his house. Did you also notice at the dance the Pepsi crate the speaker sits on disappears just before Marty kicked the speaker over? In the second film, Marty doesn't even jump off the speaker during his solo like he did in the first. Magic speaker, I guess.

  • In my opinion, Back To The Future is the most consistent movie trilogy, at least in terms of quality, which is ironic because it breaks the key rule of a trilogy of essentially doing the same story 3 times, yet it works given the motif of history repeating itself. Look at all of the elements that appeared in all 3 films: Marty saying "This is heavy" and Doc Brown saying "Great Scott," Marty hitting his head and waking up with a version of his mother taking care of him, Marty walking into a diner and encountering a Tannen as well as a Strickland, a chase scene in the town square and Marty almost crashing into a vehicle, a Tannen crashing into manure, a scene where a character wears a bullet proof vest, pictures/documents changing, Marty being called "chicken," and of course the entire clock tower scene all appear in each film.

    @jessetorres8738@jessetorres87382 жыл бұрын
    • You are completely 100% correct with all of those, except one. Marty only reacts badly to being called chicken in parts 2 and 3. The "nobody calls me chicken!!" thing never happened in the first movie. And if you're wanting to get technical, reacting to being called "chicken" was mainly all in part 2 because in part 3, Marty reacted to being called "yellow" instead of "chicken" each time, with the exception being Needles challenging him to that drag race. The latter though was the only time in part 3 that wasn't in 1885. In all the 1885 instances, he was called "yellow". But still, both parts 2 and 3 repeated the same situation since "chicken" and "yellow" mean the same thing

    • @@alvexok5523 -Here’s a little, off-the-top-of-my-head theory: maybe Marty only uses these phrases in parts two and three because he has subsequently altered his family timeline, where George is a confident, no-crap kinda guy. Maybe, as a result, when Marty was growing up George gave him the advice, ‘Marty, always stand up to the bully and never let them call you chicken’. He never used the expression in the first movie because that was before he changed his family history, where his father was weak and would never have told him to stand up for himself. Obviously, I’ve over thought that and have probably watched the film far more times than is healthy! The ‘maybe’ and ‘what if’ game is always fun to play though. I bet Bob Gale has a laugh at some of the outlandish theories which are out there!

    • Biggest plot hole in the entire trilogy: In Part II, Marty, Doc, and Jennifer go to 2015, only to see their OLDER SELVES in the future! If all three had gone to 2015, then that would've meant that they all had disappeared in 1985, where NO ONE knows what might have happened to them. But truth be told, the number of plot holes in the entire trilogy can only be counted with two hands, which isn't bad for a time travel movie; most have a few dozen of them. The producers and the director certainly did their homework when making all three films.

      @davidharrison3711@davidharrison3711 Жыл бұрын
    • @@davidharrison3711 I totally agree! With time travel movies your dealing with Science Fiction as opposed to Science Fact, so all bets are off when it comes to an idea being factual correct or incorrect. As you said, when Doc, Jennifer and Marty arrive in 2015 their older selves shouldn’t really exist as there are no guarantees at that point that they’re ever going to get back to 1985 and to live their lives through to 2015! You can tie yourself into knots hypothesising on theories and laws of time and ultimately someone has to draw a line and say ‘listen, we’ve got a story to tell here’ and concentrate on the narrative rather than the minutiae of what can be a very mercurial set of scientific theories. As you said, the BTTF deals really well with these complex ideas. I always loved the fact that Marty watches himself (or maybe an alternative self) travelling to 1955 in ‘Lone Pine Mall’. Those little Easter eggs are what makes the film so clever.

  • The danger of Doc hanging from the clock tower is that he could have moved the hands. The reason they knew exactly what time lightning struck was presumably because it stopped the hands in place. If he moved them on accident then it would give a false time and might change the future/past where Marty has the wrong time and they miss the lightning altogether

    @davidm4566@davidm45662 жыл бұрын
    • I noted, upon my first release theatrical viewing, that if the DeLorean had NOT initially stalled on Marty, he would have hit the wire too soon to receive the lightning's input! Interesting that you note the "discrepancy may well have been caused by Doc's weight on the clock hand! It would fit seamlessly with the Harold Lloyd motif + eliminate an "unforeseen miscalculated factor" (as a physicist would likely put it).Now, we need to find out from the top production heads of the time, if honestly (b/c a happy, coincidental, unintended blend is also a part of movie magic) that "gap" was intended or, as Bob Ross would say, a "happy little accident." • @@davidm4566 The Clock Tower was a historic part of Hill Valley. It had no second hand, having it's minute hand tick once every sixty seconds--making the margin of error a full sixty seconds. The clock was struck by lightning and was destroyed. Apart from Doc and Marty, nobody else knew that because there were no witnesses. There was fire, a broken piece of masonry, and some cables. There would have been some investigation conducted by authorities as to what happened and when. Cogs on the clock mechanism are marked for calibration, making it easy for investigators to ascertain and report when the clock was destroyed down to the second. This is obviously hyperbole, however it demonstrates that it was indeed possible to determine the exact time of the lightning strike from a clock with no second hand.

      @PhantomFilmAustralia@PhantomFilmAustralia Жыл бұрын
  • Even better than worrying about the exact second lightning strikes, ask yourself how Doc could have known the time machine would stall at the starting line, delaying it from reaching the clock tower. Then worry about whether or not Doc knew the performance specs of the car, then worry about Marty dragging the clutch from 2nd-3rd gear, and only then you’ll start to realize how many times I’ve seen this movie.

  • There are two dark and unsettling details that I have noticed. One: Biff attacked Loraine and would have raped her, if George had not saved her, yet older George keeps Biff around for menial tasks. And Loraine is ok with this? Two: Marty came back home to a family that he did not grow up with. All the memories and experiences that he had were with a family in an alternate timeline. His family may be "better" but this Marty does not belong with them. And what happened to the Marty who does belong there? Did he land with the more dysfunctional timeline or did he blink out of existence?

    @julieabraham3566@julieabraham3566 Жыл бұрын
    • To answer the first unsettling detail: Yes, totally agree, but it was probably the only way the writers could prove that in the new 1985, George had truly overcome Biff's constant bullying. Still really twisted though for sure. Second detail: I've read and heard several theories, but the one that seems most plausible is that the Marty from the 'Improved 1985' can be seen at 1:33am traveling back to 1955, and thus essentially being caught in a time loop, so he wouldn't be present in 1985 just hours later when the Original Marty wakes up. It does suck that he didnt really grow up with this version of his family, but even an altered version his family is still his family at the end of the day. Also, it seems pretty clear that Marty spends a lot of his time either with Jennifer, playing in his band, or hanging with Doc, so I don't think he minded much that they were different, especially since the environment seemed WAY healthier than two siblings with low self-esteem, a dad who still gets bullied by his HS bully, and a mom who thinks vodka is the same as water

That way, no matter which of the 60 seconds in that minute the lightning hit, contact is assured. Then, after the time jump back to 1985, the wheels would hit the ground, and Marty could just hit the brakes.

    • I had a similar thought, however I was and have always been under the impression that the car had to be in motion? So... could they have connected a coiled wire (similar to a vacuum's power lead) that would carry on releasing once making contact, so that the car is travelling at 88mph whilst connected, ready for the lightning strike? With your idea it's impossible, from the Physics I remember from Secondary School in 1993, you won't get to 88mph from stationary instantly, the De Lorean's acceleration was 0-60mph 8.8 sec for a manual and 10.5 sec for an automatic. There's a shot during the time Doc is meeting with the Libyans that should show a Marty running down a slope in the background. It's rumoured that a shadow of someone is visible, but I've never been able to confirm this. It seems there's a Marty for every Doc, even in Rick and Morty. ;-)

He later tells Doc this, who in turn tells him, that he could've altered the time line, and could cause catastrophic consequences. "So I killed him with my fifty cents", Marty said. "Not necessarily, but you understand my point", Doc replies.

  • 9:07 In this scene at the end of Marty's solo, we see people looking mad, bewildered, and shocked. One lady on the right has her hand over her chest like it's going to kill her. Anther guy just right of center plugs his ear at the pain the last note causes. However, there is one person out of this entire crowd that appears to smile. Almost dead center, we find the man himself, Mr. George McFly.

  • Doc said he wanted to know who won the next 25 World Series, he never said he intended to go back and bet on them. Desiring to see the World Series isn't hypocritical. He's just a sports fan. Yes, it is ironic that the 1955 and 1985 mayoral campaign slogans are exactly the same. But you didn't point out that even the posters on the van are exactly the same, except for the photo of the incumbent mayor. Also, a side note, when Marty returns to his 1985, he greets the bum on the park bench as "Red." I have always thought that was the same guy who was mayor in 1955. Apparently not, as another breakdown video said that either Zemeckis or Gale said that wasn't true. Too bad. I thought that was a funny touch. I have always wondered how the writers of Back To The Future could create such a brilliant script but miss totally the unlikelihood of Marty hitting the wire at the exact moment the lightening struck. Yes, I believe it was mentioned that the clock was struck at "exactly" 10:04 pm, but to me that's still got 59 chances to miss out on the 1.21 gigawatts. I have always thought it was pretty weird that not even Doc Brown made mention of how critical it was and how difficult it would be to achieve.

  • 10:55 R A Heinlein disliked "paradoxes." In His reckoning: Say, you were selected to time travel and prevent JFK's assassination. You can't. While arriving there is, to *your* personal timeline, a "future event" you are only just experiencing, as Time progressed, the date/time came up, you "appeared," you did whatever you did, JFK got shot, you vanished and returned home. That makes a heck of a lotta sense. I believe his amazing short story, "All You Zombies," was a sarcastic reply to readers who "enjoy" paradoxes. Basically, Heinlein said, "You *want* a paradox? *I'll* give you a paradox!," and wrote a tale in which - b/c of time travel and genome-altering tech - the SAME person is: 1) Themself 2) Their own father... 3)Their own mother... 4) The child resulting from that sexual union 4)The bartender who initially recruits [his personal timeline younger self] to enjoin "the team." **THERE'S** a fraggin' paradox for ya, ya paradox-lovin' summbeaches!!

The car that catches on fire and runs into the rags and catches fire led demonstrates the carelessness around the shop that lead to the Brown Manor burning down. That's in a picture at the beginning of the movie.

  • 2:00 - Honestly, Doc scolding Marty about the Almanac could be explained by what happened in the first and third movie. In the first movie, Marty went back to 1955, and as he was telling Doc about things from 1985, Doc started to become apprehensive about knowing too much about the future, both from this and also from seeing what was happening to Marty as a result of mucking about with the spacetime continuum. Then in the second movie, Doc displayed the apprehension by sedating Jennifer so she wouldn't know too much about the future (this didn't stop her from finding some things out anyway, but it was the intent that mattered). In the third movie, Marty is briefly in 1955, where Doc learns that his future self wants to destroy the DeLorean. He had thirty years to ponder the possible reasons why this was. So in other words, Marty's adventures in 1955 are what caused Doc's outlook to change. He still went to 2015 like he originally planned, but with a bit more reservation than before.

  • I'm sure it's in the comments somewhere but while you're talking about Marty and the sports almanac, your referencing that the doc scolded him was different from the doc that mentioned finding out the next 25 World series winners. Here's where I catch the mistake that's the doc from the beginning of the first film, saying he could find out the next 25 World series winners, now we don't know how long he's been using The Time machine by the sequel, but it's definitely not 30 years. I think what should be taken away from that is in his time being a time traveler he's realized interference of any kind almost always leads to failure, with Marty's parents somehow able to be the exception to this rule.

  • Not sequel baiting at all. It was truly meant to not have a sequel. Then Universal told "The Bob's" Gale & Zemeckis that they were making a sequel with or without them. Bob Gale has said that the hardest part of BTTF2 was figuring what to do with Jennifer. Because there wasn't ever meant to be a sequel, her being in the car at the end of the first movie was a huge headache. Bob Gale said if they knew then that there would be a sequel she wouldn't have been in the original ending at all.

  • Goldie Wilson did not have slurs hurled at him. "Colored" was the common term used universally. You may have heard of a group that proudly referred to themselves with the acronym NAACP. If anything people aren't critical enough of Goldie, Hill Valley went to shit under his watch. He couldn't even keep graffiti off of the high school.

  • The clock tower in 2015 in back to the future part 2 still has a chunk missing 60 years after marty went back to 1985 so really from 1955-1985 they never fixed it even when they changed the clock tower between 1985-2015 they still didnt patch that up you would think that someone would have noticed

  • So why wasn’t Biff rich and powerful as an old man when he got back to 2015. Is it cause Marty and Doc didn’t leave to go back to alternate 1985 yet?

  • What would happen if the put the delorean on a giant car treadmill and connected it to the wire when the lightning hit, that way they could just have the car driving at a constant 88mph until the lighting strikes…. Less risk 🤷‍♂️
