    • At the end of the day, movies are a business. I assume if the Stoltz based movie was able to turn a profit, even if it became a forgettable flash in the pan, they would have just approved the Stoltz version for release. So I assume it stunk enough that Zemeckis went to his bosses and was like...See? I tried to tell you to get MJF. I just can't see studio heads approving to essentially pay everyone, the cast, the crew to shoot a movie for a second time with a new lead unless the version was that bad. That being said, the movie is so popular, if they put the Stoltz cut together and throw it on Netflix I bet people would be interested given the fandom.

    • I only really liked that movie more because of Cher and Sam Elliott. The only reason Eric was such a good fit, was because he didn't have to use much of any facial expressions, but to me, his voice still sounded as monotone as it does in every other movie he's been in. His version of "the fly" was a little better but....not too much.

  • Now that I think of it, what could have been a mind bender is a BTF film where Michael J Fox as Marty goes back in time, inadvertently jeopardizes his own existence via chance encounter with Lorraine. Then, knowing the danger, he gets his parents back together, but the new present day 1985 changes. Marty wakes up to find that now he’s alive, but in the corpus of Eric Stolz.

  • 9:55 I think what Eric is doing is, as Marty, scanning his young father from top to bottom, processing that this is his teenaged father. This shot in particular I felt demonstrates why Eric wasn't right for the part. Michael J. Fox does this moment more in complete shock, with his eyes dead set in one direction (his father's face) in total disbelief. Eric though has more of a "Hm. So this is my father as a teen. Interesting..."

  • my fave movie of all time too....although I couldn't get my plate as OUTATIME....I did get OWDATIME... I saw the movie for the first time in 1985..as the second movie in a double feature at the theatre..it wasn't "officially" released yet and was being tested in certain markets...I don't remember what the first movie was. but when BTF came on..I was completely mesmerized. The fact that Fox was so tired while doing the movie..(I believe he worked from 7 till 2 in the morning while doing family ties), gave his character the feeling he was in a dream, and everything wasn't really happeningý. The final scene when he wakes up in his "renovated" 1985 bed and home hints to perhaps it didn't, until Doc shows up again in his driveway with the Delorean. This allows the "hint" for the continuation for part II. A sequel was NEVER Zemeckis's plan. Bob never wanted to make one, but Universal told him (once it became a hit) , if he didn't do a sequel, they would find somebody who would. Note: I always found it very interesting that the movie had a feel of the Disney movies of the 50's..yet Disney turned it down because one of the execs told Bob that Disney.. "does NOT do movies about incest!!."😂..I bet that guy was out of a job soon after.

What sucks is that I clearly remember my audition and everybody cheering that they'd finally found their 'Bob' - the character's name. I had even gone through 2 months of body training, but in the end, I was off the project. I actually don't know if they ever finished it. I only wish I'd have some of my footage or set shots because I remember it looking great!

  • The MJF version of BTTF is just a re-write version of original BTTF. The original version was darker in tone and was more intended for teenage and adult audience. After Zemeckis, saw ansambled version of BTTF filmed with Stoltz and contacted Spielberg they switched the gears to a comedy.Steven after success of ET figured out that making family oriented movie are more profitable at the box office. Everyone in 1985 tried to do the same thing with Goonies and Explorers. In the end BTTF was made purely for profit , mot as a huge contribution to the movie history. MJF version launched a big money maker on merch.Stoltz version will never have sequels and all this attractions at Universal. Stoltz version was better in the sense of message of the movie, story development of Marty as a guy with feelings and his interior world. MJF version was a movie for kids and Marty is looking at all as an adventure (cartoonish). They shot 9 weeks with Eric -almost the entire movie (7 weeks as documented in Visual Book and secretely and 2 more weeks after January 10 1985). It is hard to believe in Bob Gale's words whet all of them are explaining today making people to believe their fairy tales... MJV version has this 80s flavor, Stoltz version aged better in the sense of interpretation of the serious subject of the family of loosers from the beginning of the movie...

    • Believe me , they have prepared BTTF Stoltz Cut years ago. It is just in vaults at Universal, and c a opy of it at Amblin. Today people are more interesting in this Stoltz Cut than in many other things regarding BTTF and released version with MJF. The BTTF 1 with Fox is really poorly edited movie trying to hide many shots used from Stoltz Cut. It is very noticeable especially in HD on big screen. Different lightening between shots, patern of footage , weird angles, hairstyle of actors are different in particular segments, some of them lost weight between re-shots, another one gained weight during re-shots and Cundey used different lenses to shoot . There is a rare test screen and rehearshal on youtube with different guy as Marty where George McFly played by Crispin Glover is not goofy and comedic at all - looks more an unhappy person with his life. Of course Gale will deny everything.... Here is the link kzhead.info/sun/dsuYl6mBrIFpln0/bejne.html

  • Interesting info. Thanks for sharing. I think Zemeckis absolutely wanted Fox for this movie. He tried a bit with Stoltz but was not happy because he was told to give him the shot. I read somewhere recently Stoltz said “that if he (Zemeckis) wanted me to play it more comedically, I could have done that.” (insinuating that isn’t the direction he was given). So either Stoltz is truly the over the top annoying method actor they say he is or Zemeckis let him hang himself so they would get another chance at Fox or maybe a little of both.

      @CoolGobyFish@CoolGobyFish6 ай бұрын
    • @@CoolGobyFish Zemeckis and Gale had REALLY wanted Fox right at the Start. From what Producer Neil Canton has said, Both Roberts gave him the task of formulating a Plan to get the Family Ties director to relent and let MJF come and shoot BTTF. This was during the Holiday Season of '84. By after New Years in '85, A Deal had already been reached that would allow Fox to come to the set and Shoot. So Zemeckis and Gale begin to film "Around Eric Stoltz" in order to drag out the fact that it had already been decided that he would be Fired by Friday January 11th. Canton says that his Daughter was born the same day they started shooting with MJF. Regarding Crispin, what happened is that he and The Bobs hadn't patched things up Early in Late 1988 when BTTF 2 started production. Glover and Gale and Zemeckis had gotten into a Dispute over the Ending of BTTF, what Glover wanted was a More pivotal role in the Script(Which's 1987 Draft HAD also written Biff as having a very important aspect) and felt that he should rightfully receive the SAME salary as Lea Thompson and Tom Wilson. Glover didn't get fired, he TURNED down returning for Part 2. What PISSED off Glover something awful is that Zemeckis and Gale decided to Hide the fact that Glover was being recast and took the Rick Baker mold of his from 1985 and molded it onto Jeffery Weissman. Glover also berated Weissman's performance and how a "Back injury" was cheaply written in as an excuse to those who noticed Glover's absence.

  • It’s really odd that Stoltz won’t speak of this. Almost like it was such a hit to his ego after doing Mask, that he felt it ruined him. Though he did end up making some kind of wonderful after the fact. Which was nice and actually did show a more light hearted comedic side of him. If he were to replace how he was playing, Marty McFly with how he played the character in some kind of wonderful, it would’ve worked better. Though something tells me we’re not getting the whole story. Because many people say that the original draft of the script was much darker, and it was while Zemeckis was filming that he had the Epiphany that it should be a little bit more lighthearted. Which could’ve thrown Eric off. Which is the shame that we cannot get in an interview with him about this. Then again, I never understood the whole character actor thing where people replace themselves with the character they’re playing, simply to stay in character. Because it does put up a wall with him, and the rest of the cast and crew. Because while everybody else was kidding around and being teenagers or 20 year olds, not sure how old everybody was… he was locking himself in his trailer, being a serious, Marty McFly. Though, some of the pictures that you showed… It looked as if him and Leah were kidding around. Which is why I think there is more to the story than we know. Like, maybe they were still polling for Michael Fox, and found out they could get him through the means that they eventually did… And decided before principal photography continued, to replace him with their original choice. Since they were given that option from the studio head. What I don’t get is that, and maybe it was ego and attitude coming off of Mask, somebody in his position knowing how big this film could be… Would have the gumption to tell the writer and director how the character should be played. Which again, could be because the script was more dark originally. Though, the corroboration between the principal actors and cast is that he just wasn’t working out, and him and Zemeckis were butting heads… so who knows? I can’t imagine they would want to sit on the Stoltz footage, knowing that they could sell millions of more copies of the movie with it attached… But there has to be some legal ramifications, preventing it. Like, compensating Stoltz for the residuals. Which I’m wondering if he gets, considering that, at least parts of him are still in the movie. Obviously, there’s no dialogue… but, still… And maybe that’s part of the deal with him getting residuals, he can’t say anything under NDA… which is why nobody can get a interview with him? I’m just spit balling. Also, I wonder if they decided to release this material if they would do an interview with him and try to get in his headspace at the time. It’s such an interesting situation that you wonder how many other times it’s happened in other movies. If it has at all… Thank you for the video and more insight into this. It really is fascinating.

    • It would be unbelievably satisfying to hear Stoltz talk about this whole thing. I don't know why he hasn't talked about it but... Yeah it feels like he was burnt bad with this experience. I understand that. However, it has been a LONG time since that happened. Maybe it would be cathartic for him to spill the beans on it. It might still happen you never know.

      @ScottyDunn@ScottyDunn Жыл бұрын
    • @@ScottyDunn I absolutely agree. But, there must be reasoning behind him remaining silent. Either it’s a personal failure or ego thing, coming off the praise he got with Mask… or it’s a legal thing, where he’s not able to speak about it due to some sort of NDA. Or maybe it’s just an irritation of really none of his films being talked about… Even though I love them personally… Like Back To The Future. The odd thing is, he could be making great money off of KZhead and other sources talking about it, along with his other movies. I can understand as an entertainer, myself, why he may not want to do that. Generally, the second I’m off stage, I am back to being me. Some people enjoy privacy more than fame. So maybe that’s it. But, like you said, it would be nice to know before the principal people in the know aren’t with us anymore.

    • Recently there were all this talk about the making a sequel from the movie "Back to the Future 4. I know MJF is unwell, I believe the right cast for the leading role Marty McFly is nobody other than Eric Stoltz. Eric had mellow out through the years and I feel like that's his chance to redeem himself for the role. I can't see no other actor or actress to filled in that spot but him. He could still keep the franchise as people call it "A coming of age" instead of a reboot. If they cast somebody else like Jenna Ortega or Tom Holland to do the reboot to attract just for the Millennials or Gen Z. The film gonna get some extreme criticism and it will ruined the franchise. If he can't played Marty, they can always make a different new character for the role. Eric is the closest thing to Michael J Fox because they're both the same age and the story would make much sense to continue the sequel.

Doc is always animated when he is talking to MJF as Marty, but their conversation about where Doc will go next is made up of alternating shots and Llyod seems like he is aiming for a completely different tone, perhaps to match the McFly portrayed by Stoltz. If that was the case, I wish they re-shot it with Llyod and MJF. Or, maybe they did it that way so the next interaction 2 minutes later would be that much more explosive.
