Why people believe they can’t draw - and how to prove they can | Graham Shaw | TEDxHull

Why is it that so many people think they can’t draw? Where did we learn to believe that? Graham Shaw will shatter this illusion - quite literally - in a very practical way. He’ll demonstrate how the simple act of drawing has the power to make a positive difference in the world.
Graham specialises in the art of communication and has helped thousands of people to make important presentations. He is perhaps best known for his use of fast cartoon drawings to communicate ideas and is the author of ‘The Art of Business Communication’.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

  • People think that they cannot do things, simply because they do not know where to start. Information overload is a real thing, especially in todays world of seemingly infinite distractions. It's all about breaking things down into smaller parts, and analyzing them. To truly understand something, we must look at the smaller components that make up the whole equation. Same goes for time, something I am still learning is that to not be overwhelmed with life and to remain peaceful, you must treat each day one step at a time, literally and metaphorically. Focus on the moment. Seek clarity and understanding in things that you wish to, and for God's sake, do not forget how much potential you have. Remember, everyone who ever did anything amazing, was doubted by everyone around them, and a lot of our self doubt, comes from the fact that we tend to believe what others say at times we shouldn't. All I wish by commenting here right now is that maybe one person even reads this and decides to go on with something that they have been doubting that they could do for some time, and that it takes you on a journey that changes you life for the better, and I, will do my best to do the same.

  • People really think drawing is some impossible task when they've never spent any time doing it, but the way he demonstrated it really is all there is to it. I tend to draw more realistic or stylized images, but can confirm that the process is the exact same. I learned how to draw noses by copying one I saw in a comic book of mine, and all I do now is follow the same process making slight alterations when I want something that looks different.

    @OdinWright@OdinWright Жыл бұрын
    • People think that really? I’ve heard people say art is easy and “anyone can do it” like it totally doesn’t take 10 or 5 years

      @Silencer796@Silencer796 Жыл бұрын
    • @@Silencer796Lol, if it takes you 5 years to get better at drawing, you're doing something wrong or you're really not drawing to improve like you said you are. If you're dead set on being better, you'd be focusing on REAL things that can make you better like learning Anatomy, perspective, color theory, etc... instead of drawing freestyle or copying a reference with no real objective. Sure, you're going to get a sense of it, but it can only take you so far. It's like doing an action, unable to understand what you're doing. Take for example, sweeping. Your mother told you to sweep and you did. The question is, are you sweeping the right way? Lots of people think that by just drawing everyday, you'll get better, but that's technically incorrect. If you do it the right way, you'll improve faster. If you don't, then you're going to spend more time.

I know he didn't sang good cause i'm going to the music school and know how to sing. Then he challenged me to sing. I sang "I want to break free" by Queen. • I draw for fun, and if you're young or just starting off you should try to remember this: Grades in school mean next to nothing, if you get a bad grade in arts don't let that destroy your interest in it. This nearly happened to me, but luckily I was able to avoid it. Extra note: Always finish a drawing, I personally keep all drawings in a little notebook with their date of when I drew them. While you're drawing something you might believe that it isn't good, or that you can do better but if you finish the drawing and look at it again a few months/years later you'll be able to look at it in a different way and truly appreciate it. I also love sharing my drawings with someone, it's not needed to have fun but it personally makes me motivated to get even better, and the feedback/compliments you'll receive will be really helpful :)

I tried and I like the result, it was terrible in hindsight but I thought it was good, he gave me tips and encouraged me (while probably cringing inside at my attempts) and I got far better, I love art now so much and I'm actually quite good. Art inspired me to take up photography and I'm really good at that, I knew I had to practice and now I'm professional level. I'm neurodivergent though and that has helped (and hindered) me a lot.

If you think artists are born with a brush in hand, painting like the old masters, you're undermining countless hours of hard work and practice they've put into art. You could do that too and be one of them. Nothing's stopping you but yourself.

    • Drawing is easy if you do what artists do, copy eachother. I take 6 different types; Avatar (the Last Airbender), Kipo, Zelda, Final Fantasy, Snailords - for an example. I take the basic lines; facial outlining, nose, ears, etc. From one style. Then I get more detailed with things like reshaping the eyes to be more pronounced, lips, nose, etc from another artists. Better details like the iris and reflecting from another artist. Shape and style of hair from another. And I continue combing things until I have a sort of blueprint for really making it my own. Like, all my characters have different types of fantasy ears. Mermaid ears, fairy ears, elf ears, etc. And then the shadowing and shading is all automatically me. As is coloring. Then by the end, you can't tell what it's origins are. Copying artists into something else is what we call inspiration and reimagining. You can also just take a picture, and draw it, then detail it differently. Like making it look cgi like Final Fantasy or WoW. Everyone can draw, if they take the time a patience. True artists don't say "practice makes perfect," we say "practice makes better." Because we're always striving to be better and improve. But it does take time and effort, and a lot of self love.

  • I'm a self-taught artist who loves to draw animals and especially birds. I experiment with all sort of things and of course, not everything turns great bc my drawings can't all be perfect. I started my journey when I was a little kid, spending my days scribbling with markers instead of playing with dolls. When I was 5 or 6, I started to have a real interest into drawing and drew all kinds of things that were in my mind whenever I had free time. When I was in grade 2, I started to have a real interest in birds and animals and little did I knew my passion would lead me where I am now. I started self-teaching myself the techniques by drawing out of photos. Literally. Now, I only need a little bit of inspiration and a bird photo reference (mainly for the species so I don't mess up the color scheme) to create a masterpiece. That little 80 pages sketchbook that I got for literally CA$10 at my college's store gives me the motivation I need to continue my studies by filling a page every Tuesday between my maths and English classes while I have 3h to kill. After growing up drawing, I truly think it's smth you learn and need to tackle every day in order to get better. Being an artist is like being a musician: practice every day or you won't get better. I want to give a piece of advice for every artist who doubts themselves: try everything, by doing that, you will find what you like to draw the most as well as your style. See your art as a way to express yourself instead of seeing it as "it always needs to be perfect and please others". It doesn't need to be perfect, nor does it need to even make sense. Your sketchbook is like your little kingdom, no one needs to see it nor does every page needs to be a masterpiece.

Both my sisters would draw out of interest and someday(out of boredom) I thought maybe I should give it a try. I did, and I surprised myself. Suddenly I discovered it isn't that difficult. You just had to copy from the book stroke by stroke. With every trial I got better. It's also true that you don't realise you like something until you try it. I started liking art. Till date when someone tells me 'you draw so well, I can't draw at all'. I tell them, "anyone can draw, you just haven't tried it enough".

It's like the saying that we have in our place, "You'll never know how good you are at Math, unless you do more Maths." Because learning a skill consumes time and effort. The problem is that we easily give up, we lack motivation, or we're uninterested.

If the news pointed all their cameras at car crashes and told you if you choose to drive you're choosing to put everyone at risk, people would suddenly be terrified and feel guilty driving. The flu has always killed people, covid hasn't killed any more than any flu has any year before it if you actually look at the data. The number of deaths in the U.S. for instance has gone up within a certain number (around 10-15k more each year I believe) along with population growth and that number hasn't moved even a little. Also, heart disease, pneumonia and diabetes have all dropped (for the first time in 40plus years) at the EXACT rate covid has risen, all while "the flu" as we have known it has... ready? COMPLETELY DISAPPEARED. FLATLINED WHEN COVID "ARRIVED". They merely shined a light on something that has always been there. Covid 19 is simply a new strain of a virus we've dealt with our entire lives. Protect the old and sick, and LEAVE THE REST OF US YOUNG AND HEALTHY ALONE. Not to mention, the last year has marked the biggest transfer of wealth to companies like Amazon ever in history. Makes you think a bit doesn't it? Almost makes you want to USE YOUR BRAIN 🧠🤔 😁

  • I led a children's choir when I was younger. And I had all sorts of elementary schoolers and a few middle schoolers and many were not used to hear or use their voice at all, many thinking they couldn't sing. I kind of went along with all the needs kids had, from having them yell and then sing from the front part of a church with fine acoustic to the back to jumping on top of a table in our choir room, to show a boy who would only mumble in a very low voice, he had actually a wide range. I pretended to be a full moon, hence needing to be on that table. He was surprised but agreed to be the wolf howling and growling at me. After that little exercise he was thrilled and dared to actually find higher notes or even manage to sing correct intervals. I had been warned about his "inability" by other adults. I said we would try and if he was enjoying himself he was welcome. I hadn't a single child that could not sing. They got better through practise sure, but this first experience with their own voice doing something outlandish is more like a portal they came through. And you could even notice a shift in their spoken voice, which was now showing a confidence that hadn't been there before. It was one of many very rewarding things I did. It felt kind of therapeutic for me as well as for them. The only person I know who can't sing, is my mother. I am sure, because she does sing with confidence in a way you cannot recognise any melody. Of course I tried training her hearing. But there seems to be a real Amusicality. My father is a very good singer but never did so when he got over 35 years of age. I wish he would have. It's such a joyful thing.
