  • I'm sold on the concept. Most of my hunting is in the thick woods of easern Canada, and 1-6X is generally plenty of magnification. So far my favourite is the Athlon Midas BTR Gen 1 ATSR1. SFP, a simple reticle with an illum dot and light weight are my main criteria. Unfortunatly the Athlon is discontinued, and there aren't too many offerings with all of those criteria. I'd love to hear what others are using.

  • I bought a monstrum lpvo out of curiosity and budget and I like it. Use it on my muzzleloader 1-6 . They just came out with new reticles I'm considering a 1-8 on my 6.5 Grendel bolt gun. They work for what I do

Have a blessed day.

  • I heard you mention TruGlo. I actually own a the TruGlo TruBright 1-6. I’ve had it for at least 5 years. It’s lived it’s life on a 10.5 .300BO. I personally haven’t had any issues with it. It’s held zero very well. It’s served it’s purpose very well. Purpose being hunting and punching holes in paper. My only gripe with it is that it or the supplied mount is a chunky girl! I had purchased a second one that was illuminated. Just had mildot reticle in it. I had it in .450BM AR and it didn’t even make it through sight it and it stopped tracking. As of the comment, 3/7/24, I ordered the 3-9 version of this optic to try on 350 Legend. Simply because it is very compact. Well will see how it does soon.

  • I have a good handful of ranch truck guns with 1-6 through 1-10 and they’ve been pretty usable with the correct height mount for the specific stock of the rifle they’re used on. I only really do it because because I own them and had upgraded the AR LPVO they use to be on, not because they’re the best optics for the job. The money is at 2x base with 36-42mm objectives for handy ranch guns. I am Really appreciating my 2-12 42mm athlon experiment.

  • In short, much like the comparison of modern vs. legacy cartridges, modern optics dominate over paw paw's Redfield 3-9x40 scope. A LPVO is a more practical scope, with a wider application field. Let's face it, just as Fitzy said, most guys using a legacy optic, aren't hunting past 100yds, and would never dare take a shot over 200yds. As far as what would I use LVPO vs. MPVO, that truly depends on the hunting conditions I'm going to. If I'm in Deep East TX, LVPO all day. South or West TX, MVPO would be preferred, depending on how much brush and mesquite trees are on the land. Study the area you're hunting, and bring set ups for both, in case you can't go to the site before the hunt.

  • For deer, bear, and elk I do not shoot over 300 yards. So a fixed 4 or 6x works because it is a big target. Smaller targets squirrels , and paper higher power is needed 10x and up to 20x after that mirage comes into play.

  • Beyond 8x i want parallax adjustment. 1-8x i really like for 400 and in. Beyond 400 i prefer 2-10/2-12x with parallax adjustment. Beyond 700 i will take the bulk and weight of 3-18/4-20x. My eyes aren't what they used to be. Just preference mostly. I recommend lightest weight optic that fits your needs and doesn't put you in the poor house

  • Any optic that is variable and has a lower side below the traditional 3-9 power scope. This includes the 2-12 and 2-10 scopes that are popular for African hunts. With a 30mm tube the maximum objective to pass light is 44mm. This is where the Simmons 44mag scopes came in. They did research on what was the largest tube at the time (30mm) and how a larger bell affected it. Some objective bells were huge in the 80s, I remember a 56mm and a 60mm which was huge. They found that 44mm was the maximum without going to a bigger tube 35mm at time and if you did, the max was 48mm. They said at 35mm tube sizes, the human eye couldn't gather any more light from it. So 48mm is the upper limit for objective. It's why you don't see more than a 50 anymore.

  • Are lpvos brighter, less bright or about the same compared to say a 3-9-50?

    @mr.mr.3301@mr.mr.33019 ай бұрын
    • It depends , largely on what optics and price points we are comparing.

      @txpredatorhunting@txpredatorhunting8 ай бұрын
    • It's all based on glass quality and objective lense size. The bigger to objective tube is the more light gets let in. Lpvos basically have no real separate objective tube and its more a continuation of the tube diameter so in theory its less bright. That being said in reality a traditional scope may get only 2-3 more minutes of shooting light.

I deer hunt in ohio where it’s straight wall only. 350 legend and 45/70 where I could shoot 20 yards or 250. I actually have a bar 30-06 I’m looking to put a Lpvo on! I have an Athlon Midas Tac 6-24x56. Shooting 1200yards i prefer about x16-x20. I honestly don’t think I have just cranked to x24 lol great podcast! I am subscribing 👍🏼👍🏼

  • Lpvos are really the only thing that makes sense on a gun like a sig cross. At least to me. Larger optics look goofy on 16 inch guns and aren't practical for size and weight reasons. I have a 1-10 on my cross. It's light with a low profile.

    • I already had a vortex viper 4-16x50 laying around so I put that on my cross this past Christmas. I do agree that size scope looks goofy and tbh 16x is way more than I’ll ever need for a 16” 308 especially since it’s my new main hunting rifle. But I don’t agree with lpvo on it, I have a strike eagle on my American ranch 300blk and that’s perfect. Right now I’m looking for an “mpvo” type scope for the cross. Eotech just announced the vudu x today one model is a 2-12x40 so I’m seriously considering that

  • Must be able to use as a red dot without disturbing a close up shot picture, so yeah, 1 power should be true 1 power and 1.5’s would be ok - with an asteric.

    @johnbeyke8486@johnbeyke84866 ай бұрын
    • Ok, I’m going to correct myself. My first LPVO was a 1-4 on a 300 blk bolt action. This worked well for the range of the gun and allowed my tired eyes to identify and engage a target at 200 yards. The red dot effect worked great at close range. Then I started looking at different optics for my longer range rifles, and ended up putting Nightforce NX8 1-6 and 2.5 to 20’s on my 5.56 AR’s and 6.5 Creedmore/308’s respectively. They are small and fast with the throw lever and have appropriate magnification for their range abilities. Does the 2.5 - 20 count as a LPVO? If you use it as one, I guess so.
