  • Does your home pass the cat safety test? Or does it contain some of the things mentioned here? Let us know!

    • My home contains a lot of craft supplies and model building and model railroading supplies. The guys 😺😸 are 15 and 13 years old this year and long ago learned to stay away from them. Fortunately, even the water base model paints smell nasty enough to them that they leave them alone. However, I do keep the the Xacto knives in a box where they will not get stepped on if the guys do get up on the model building table as I've drawn enough of my own blood with those blades, thank you very much! Still remember the first time decades back one of my cats stretched up to reach my laps and see what I was doing, I held a paintbrush up for I think it was Annabelle to sniff and she looked at me with an expression which just screamed, "Ewww! What barnyard sewer did you get THAT from?!?!?" The 2 guys I have now did pretty much the same.

    • Are we sure about bleach? That's routinely used in several places to disinfect items. Once applied, aqueous sodium hypochlorite readily breaks down into water, chlorine gas, and a trace amount of sodium. The surface can be rinsed with plain water afterward if one desires.

  • Just to expand on the danger of lilies --- a lot of grocery and department stores sell "lucky bamboo" plants, which look like bamboo BUT are actually lilies, and you don't want your cat to chomp on them at all either.

    • I did not know this! One of my cats used to eat the grounds that spilled when I was filling the coffee maker! I never realized it because he would wait until the coffee started brewing and I left the area to do something. Then he jumped up on the counter. Eventually, I saw him doing it and after that was careful to not spill any. He did live to be 21 years old.

    • My better half puts a coaster over her coffee cup (she's a menace with lidded travel cups, she still somehow manages to spill). When he was a kitten I caught that our now second eldest had soaked his paw in my shot of Jack Daniels after I noted him assiduously cleaning said paw. I never in a million years would have thought any cat would be interested in liquor.

  • One of the best things for cleaning safely is a steam cleaner such as a Polti. They run on water, no chemicals. I've got one and use it for cleaning the kitchen and bathroom floors, another attachment lets you clean work surfaces. In fact, they come with attachments for almost every household job you can think of. Quick and easy and they run at such a high temperature they sanitise surfaces. They're also great for people who have allergies.

  • Chocolates, coffee, onions, garlic and many other foods are toxic to cats also. We also take off street shoes before entering home to avoid dragging in bacteria & viruses from the outside. For some cats that like to chew wires, get hard plastic conduits to wrap electrical chords or unplug them when not in use. Also, hang outdoor coats away especially after hiking. Pollen and other harmful plant components could enter your home. Thanks for making cat guardians aware of the many dangers. Cheers!

  • ‼️Plastic Jingle balls (sold everywhere) can get stuck in their toes. I had a hyper kitten get her toes splayed apart and STUCK just from pouncing onto the little ball. That toy had to be cut with tin snips to get it off her foot. Poor thing was in SO MUCH PAIN. I’m so glad she trusted me enough to come out from under the bed to help her. We have all seen these toys sold at grocery stores and anywhere that sells cat toys. It’s the plastic balls that are essentially a hollow plastic shell with slits allowing you to see the tiny bell inside. They are brightly colored. I had NO IDEA they could seriously injure your cat, and wish it was more widely known.

    • Essential oils are ok as long as you aren't exposong your cats to them. People forget that these are also in a lot of personal care products and topical pain releavers, too. I have some I use in my baths for chronic pain issues, but the cats don't like bath time and I rinse the tub thoroughly after with hot water to reduce residue. Topical ointments I wear cloths over it and wash my hands before petting the cats, and just keep the dirty laundry in a hamper with a lid.

  • Excellent video! Once again, so grateful for Malory and co. for such educational (and timely--especially with holidays just around the corner) content!! I'm so tired of seeing TV shows, movies, anime, comics, etc. normalize giving cats yarn or other stringy toys to play with. On a related note, I have very long hair (almost 10"--the length needed to donate it), so I have to vacuum my carpeted floors constantly because if my cats accidentally get one of my stupid hairs in their mouths, they don't have fingers or lips like humans (we can pull &/or spit out a hair--they can't unless they hack up a hairball which isn't pleasant). Also, if you ever see a long hair, string, piece of yarn, etc. hanging out of your cat's back side, DO NOT TRY TO PULL IT OUT!!! You don't know how long it is or if you could cause harm to their insides by yanking it out. I'm sorry for adding kind of a gross comment but I've seen/read too many horror stories on the cat subreddits to not share insights from people who have had to learn these lessons the hard way.

  • as i am starting to look at buying a house or building one I am realizing more and more that houses are not designed with pets in mind. A lot of the traditional designs have more functionality for pet owners but as you are looking to buy something more modern its obvious that we have thrown all of those important concepts out the window. For instance, foyers used to be a key feature in homes which would often give you a set of 2 doors to enter a home, one outside and one inside the home. This acted as like an inside outside space and is great for preventing your cat or dog from running out the front door when a guest comes or when you go to get the mail. Also closed off kitchen and dining spaces, though the open concept looks nice and can be good for kids its not very safe for cats as they can easily open cabinets, break dishes that are sitting out, eat human food on the counter (like bananas and potatoes), and they can walk on the burners after you are done cooking. My cats are clumsy and have pica so they get into everything, break a ton of items along the way, and just all around cannot be trusted in a dangerous place like a kitchen. its made it so I have to completely design a house entirely for them for it to be a functional livable space for us. i'd love to see a video on what things to think about when designing a house for cats like the 2 items above. if you live in a house, i'd love to hear what you wish you had to make the space work better for you both. Like a cateo or a litter box room or something else. Any tips would be super helpful

  • Lillies are my favourite flowers, I love the way they look, I love their smell, they are gorgeous. I have a huge garden and I really wanted to have some lillies, I went back and forth soooo many times how could I do it safely, but then eventually I had to just scrap the idea, it's either lillies or cats, can't have both and I choose cats. Today I wanted to buy some hyacinths, they were on sale at an (almost) irresistible price but google said they are similarly toxic to cats, so no hyacinths either. 😫 I just love smelly flowers, so I guess I have to stick to roses. 🌹😂

  • Good video - one nitpick. The first and last images used for “lilies” weren’t lilies at all. The first was the flower known as the “Peruvian lily,” commonly sold as a cut flower in US grocery stores. The Latin name is alstroemeria. The last image was a Peace Lily plant, scientific name spathiphyllum. But they aren’t lilies, despite their common names, and aren’t any more toxic to cats than a lot of other houseplants. They will make a cat throw up because they can’t digest them, but it’s not life threatening. A very common mistake. I would hate for people to go out of their way to avoid a popular (and cheap!) cut flower (alstroemeria) or a popular houseplant (spathiphyllum) for absolutely no reason. The same argument gets made a lot about other houseplants containing oxalate crystals. They make cats vomit. But just as drinking a ton of water will kill a human being, eating too much oxalate will kill kitties. But the cat would have to eat the ENTIRE bouquet several times over, or the entire houseplant and then some, roots and all. Ever see a cat puke after eating cat grass? The same thing is at work. Not actually toxic (in the practical sense) and safe to have around. I have a vase of Peruvian lilies sitting right here, as I often do, and my three cats are fine. This is about our 100th bouquet of these flowers. True lilies, in the other hand, won’t even cross my threshold. They are banished because every part of them is incredibly dangerous to cats - just as you described in the video. Thanks for the video!

  • There are definitely some things listed here I need to improve on. All plants inside are cat safe plants only. On the rare occasions I do light a candle, it's only those made and with scents deemed to be safe for pets. I had a scare with my previous cat and thread. I sew a lot and I had lost a needle and thread and couldn't find it and gave up looking for it. A few says later my cats comes up to me making a sound like smacking her lips. I turned to her and saw she had thread hanging from her mouth, with a needle weighing it down. I freaked out and pulled out the thread she was attempting to eat, thankful that she didn't eat the needle end first and alsp that she came to me for help. After that I have been very meticulous about keeping track of my needles and thread bits and throwing away all thread scraps each time I'm finished sewing. One of my current cats prefers to play with hair ties and the plastic tabs you pull off large juice jugs when first opening them. She has never tried eating these before, but I do need to put those away and only let her play with them when I can supervise her. I'm gonna go gather all those up from the floor as soon as she's finished napping on my legs.

  • As far as your pets drinking out of the toilet...DON'T! Always close the lid on the toilet before flushing. This not only minimizes the amount of toilet water, urine and feces that becomes atomized and goes into the air, but also insures that pets do not drink water contamination with excrement and/or harsh chemicals. If there is one takeaway from the past flu/covid season, it is that toilets are a major spreader of bacteria and viruses by means of the flushing action...keep those lids closed. And as an aside, small pets such as rabbits, chinchillas, etc. can easily drown in an open toilet.

      @danielcoven9756@danielcoven97566 ай бұрын
    • Update: Pets can have toxic effects from as little as 1 mg/kg or about 5 mg for an average cat(Merck Manual). This amounts to about 1 teaspoon of ordinary toothpaste, or a full liter of typcal flouridated municpal water. While flouride can build up over time, a liter is *a lot* of water for a cat. The cat would suffer from water intoxication before the flouride would harm them. (Still, I give my kitty a mix of RO and mineral enriched water...with a cat friendly dental addivtive---those dental visits are expensive!)

  • My cats have the run of the house. It doesn't bother us we share the house. My Question: Every night before bed I disinfect the counters with a tablespoon of bleach in at least a gal of water. What I actually do is the bleach solution first then over that a disinfecting wipe after the bleach solution. I know it sounds like a lot but it's 5 minutes and worth it. In your opinion could this be a problem? The other things you talk about I follow. TIA

    @paulsampugnaro6919@paulsampugnaro69196 ай бұрын
    • That's a lot of chemicals left to dry on your counter,even with the bleach being diluted. You could just use distilled white vinegar(food safe kind, not cleaning vinegar) The vinegar smell does disepate and cleans really well.

He did have his aids vaccination because the vet recommended it as she said if a cat comes up 2 his enclosure sneezing or hiss at him so it's worth every dollar because feline aids looks cruel😢😿 Ive also put double lot off xtra netting around his enclosure 2 protecting him from snakes or cats. God 4 bid nothing like that happens but the area i live in is not known 4 snakes but its always better to be safe than sorry. • I have a question that isn't about the video, but need a hand from this community. I have a orange tabby male, just about to turn 1 year old. He still likes to bite and eat things, cords, etc. I'm sure that he needs a kitten to help with his energy levels. I already have another cat, but she is a 14 year old female and doesn't understand when he wants to play and roll around, which I think is making him sad and more agressive with the chewing and biting. My quesiton is - do I get a kitty like 6 months old is so there is all that yound cat energy? Do I get a female, or will that make my senior female territorial? Should I get another boy since he really wants to rough house play? I just want to do right by him and make him his happiest self. Thanks in advance for the help!

  • I use bleach but I wipe it back up thoroughly and make the cats wait to go in the area. Bleach breaks down into salt. It's residue is only a hazard when fresh and in concentrated quantiries. City tap water is for example mildly chlorinated to prevent dangerous bacterial build up in water infrastructure.

  • 1. We don't have lilies ever, and all other houseplants are carefully out of reach. 2. I own tea tree oil, but I don't diffuse it or leave it on my skin. I mostly use it as mosquito repellent and laundry freshener. I don't use air fresheners or candles. 3. We're very careful with string, hair ties, twist ties, etc. We're less careful with bottle caps, but we will be now! 4. I mop with a little dish soap (not Dawn, there's nothing at all special about Dawn) or a little Murphys oil soap. 5. Bleach toilet cleaners don't even work, I never use them. But they never drink out of the toilet bowls because the lids are always kept closed.

    • She just meant active diffusers, like the white cylindric ones that distribute fine droplets with the essential oils into the air through motorized pressure. She cites passive diffusers like the stick sort as ok. I got the passive diffusers. Which sucks, because they're expensive and only last a week or two. But kitties take priority. If you have recommendations for passive diffusers that at least have a strong scent for two weeks, please let me know. I can't sleep if my room smells like cat litter, it wakes me up all night, but I'm also not trying to break the bank... @XOChristianaNicole

    • Pleaseee try peller litter🙏🏼 made for cats it is amazing!!!! It smells like wood super absorbent. I have 4 cats and the only space I could put the litter boxes is the bedroom…..even my mum with her supers nose can now sleep in there. Also bentonite litter is so thin that will get in your lungs and your cats lungs slowly but surely. They also stick to their feet and they eat it when they clean their paws and goes to their intestines too. Also there are these new air cleaners very small electric devices that you place next to the litter box and they clean the air around it.

    • @@KyanneSummerwe used pretty litter for about a year but the smell of urine was so overpowering that we couldn’t stand to use it anymore. We changed it quite often which was pretty expensive as we have 5 cats. When cleaning the litterbox, the urine doesn’t clump so you’re only removing the solid parts and over time, it ends up being all urine in the box. My husband would clean it or change it and I couldn’t go in the bathroom for a good half hour afterwards because the smell was so overwhelming. I REALLY wanted it to work because I hate the regular arm and hammer cat litter but this just didn’t work for us.
