The lightning cable is DEAD. Thanks to the European Union, Apple has to swap standards to what the rest of the world has been using for years. But if you want the full BENEFIT of USB-C, you might need to shell out some big bucks for the iPhone 15 Pro…

    • That's something that I can't wrap my mind around. Most people just use phones for scrolling social media, yet they are more than willing to shell out four figures for a device to do that on. I get most people aren't tech savvy, but when a $300 Chomebook can perform that same task, but with a much larger screen and probably better battery life, you'd think people would smarten up to buying flagship phones all the time.

    • Apple said Lightning will be the port for the next decade. That's why they kept it for exactly one decade. When Apple does stuff, people get extremely annoyed. Every time and no matter what. That's why Apple is playing really really safe here and that's why they kept it so long and not changed it after only 5-6 years.

  • the double tap finger gesture for the apple watch isn't new. I haven't watched the keynote so idk if they actually advertised it as "new" but I've been using it for 2+ years already. It's an adaptive gesture so its function is contextual. I mostly use mine to pause/play media, it's SO freaking useful. A couple weeks ago I was doing house work (painting mostly) and had dirty hands or was wearing dirty/wet gloves. I had my iPhone playing through a bluetooth speaker and anytime i needed to pause, just double tap my finger to my thumb and boom, music paused without touching a single device with my grubby mitts! It's freaking awesome. And there are way more gestures too with clenching your fist/tapping fingers but I only use the simple double tap otherwise it gets a bit overcomplicated and less useful But yeah sick feature (but not new lol)

It also helps that Strava automatically imports your workouts to their app, which is good because almost every cyclist uses Strava. My only gripes about it is the fact you cannot start a workout on your phone, only on your watch. And how theres no map intergration. If you want directions you need to have the app open on your phone instead of your stats, or use the watch for directions (which is actually pretty good, but not perfect.).

I go out of my way to only use 5W charging for my 14 pro max, and have never found myself running out of battery. Sure other brands have features that Apple adds later but when it comes to the performance of their chipsets and the integration between hardware and software the competition isn’t able to compete. The iPhone 15 Pro is very compelling. I have the iPhone 12 Pro and have been wanting a phone with a larger screen and larger battery. I’ve also been wanting telephoto zoom and have been wanting USB C to be added for the past year. The pro max seems to check all the boxes… but I think I’m going to wait and see what some hands on reviews say. Very good review. I agree with all of your takeaways from the event and am excited to see what more performance Apple is able to squeeze out of their chips! The A17 Pro chip seems like a mini M1 chipset. Basically a computer processor in your pocket! If Apple can nail down the thermals we may see an actual M1 chip in an iPhone lol. Or maybe they will call it the Mi lol. Apple is often first in a lot of ways with their products. The power of their chipsets is another huge step that should push the entire mobile industry forward. Within the next 3-6 years I bet the entire industry will see a HUGE leap in performance that hasn’t been seen in quite sometime.

This is probably true for most users, especially the non-pro/max/ultra (whatever suffix they are calling it) model ones. Lightning was basically a precursor to the USB-C design. It was amazing compared to its contemporary, mirco-usb. Lightling lasted about the same length of time that the 30-pin dock connector did, they were due for a change. I still say the USBC cable ecosystem is a mess. They never adopted clear labeling or color coding of what a given cable's capabilities are. 480/5/10/20/40 Mbps, 4/8k dp, 30/60/100/240W power. And the more capable cables linked thunderbolt have very chunky connectors that are awkward sticking out from a phone by up to an inch. I just wish the USB-C cable people would actually use the standardized logos on their cables, but almost no one does.

Honestly 80gbps is probably pushing it, and not really worth worrying about too much. There is an issue with the cables themselves. They get pricey if you want the highest power + highest data + length from USB 3/4 and they get thicker. A three meter cable is great if you're in bed and want to be charged, but you wouldn't want it for transferring data at your desk obviously. I think they'll weaponise it though and use it to push adoption of the next gen Mac laptops and desktops/M3 chips along with iPads and iPhones of course. What makes practical sense on your phone to get all your video/photos off after a holiday so you can do the modern equivalent of making your family look at a photo album is another matter. But yes, Lightning definitely over stayed its welcome. Should have switched around 2019. Lightning was superior to ANYTHING that was out at the time in 2012. Micro and mini USB suck bad in comparison, they could only charge and do data, no audio or video, and micro USB is very prone to breaking. One time he let his phone die when we were over there and I had a car emergency on the way home (he was coming back later). They thought that micro USB was the same as USB C and were so insistent that they had a cable. They did not. They also recently installed an outlet with USB A ports and tell me that they have it when I plug in my USB C brick to charge things. I took a USB A to USB C cable and left it there, for future use. Whenever one of them gets a new phone, they will complain that it's a new cable (even though I have warned them several times). To be fair, they probably won't upgrade at the same time.

Windows users still need iTunes to interface with Apple hardware, which is cumbersome and non-portable, and transfer speeds from the PC are still soo early 2000s. I don't care how much you wanna sell your cloud solutions and sell your users' data, Not to mention no support for output to external displays using the standard adapters. It's neat for iPhone users to be able to charge with any charger and cable, but that's about it. Totally half-assed. This is a sin committed by various Android smartphone makers, too.
