LBC callers react as the Rwanda Bill finally passes

2024 ж. 20 Мам.
32 664 Рет қаралды

The Rwanda Bill will become law in a major victory for Rishi Sunak after being passed by the House of Lords, with no further amendments on Monday evening.
Nick Ferrari's callers respond.
00:00 - Barbara in Havant calls this 'a day of shame for this country', and woke up feeling 'sick and sad' at the news
03:17 - Richard in Crowborough disagrees with Barbara and believes the bill will be a 'deterrent' to migrants
04:21 - Katherine in Muswell Hill debates with Nick on why the bill is going ahead despite the legal opposition it has previously received
07:31 - George in Hendon believes Britain should ignore the ECHR and follow the example of Australia, that has 'stopped the boats'
08:36 - Rob in Enfield is 'dead against the bill', adding there is no guarantee that asylum seekers will not be returned to the place they sought refuge from.

The Supreme Court and both ECHR / UNHRC (UK are founding members) all said so. The UK is a signatory of the 1951 Refugee Convention which clearly states that refugees have the right not to be penalised for being in or entering a country without permission where this is necessary for them to seek and receive asylum. The Convention provides an international definition of the world ‘refugee’, which is a person in another country at risk of persecution in her, his or their own country. It sets out certain basic rights of refugees that are necessary for the enjoyment of asylum. These include the right not to be returned to a place where they are at risk of persecution.

We would have to send an average of 80-100 people per day to Rwanda as to actually reduce the spending on hotels. and now Rwanda only has space for 250 people per year, due to selling off the properties built (and paid for by the UK taxpayer) to private citizens.
