Hey, I’m Sonny! I’m from the US but I’ve been living in Asia for 10 years and started making food and travel videos to document my experiences. I travel to different parts of the world, hunting down and documenting the most unique food each country has to offer.
If you see any factual food errors in my videos, please feel free to politely let me know in the comments. I'm a huge fan of trying different, interesting foods in each country. My show is from a Western point of view, but more importantly, MY point of view. It is not meant to offend any person or culture.

Sri Lankan here. Its not often you see content about areas like Jaffna. As someone from the south west of Sri Lanka, you find that everyone knows what kind of place Jaffna is, but barely anyone ever visits, just because its such a long distance to travel by car or train. Domestic flights are unheard of on an island like ours. Its great to finally see Jaffna getting some attention. They have such a unique culture, compared to the more developed areas of Sri Lanka. Colombo is becoming quite westernized. You'd mostly find international cuisine in these areas. Tourism is indeed at an all time low, after taking hit after hit, from organized terrorist bombings across the country, to Covid, to a massive economical collapse, its a surprise its still standing as tall as it is right now. But I believe we are on our way back. Unfortunately we the people are at the mercy of incapable, uneducated, corrupt political leaders, who care about nothing but their wallets. I can only pray this country finds its way through this crisis, as it has many times before.
This guy singlehandedly did a lot for Sri-Lankan tourism with this series. I hope Sri Lanka can come back to being a top spot on peoples tourist destinations. All the best.

I’m a Sri Lankan Tamil, but I live and was born in Australia as my family fled the war, I’ve only ever known Jaffna from stories and despite visiting the country I have never been there. Its a Shithole
Well that can apply to countless countries. Nothing unique about that. However, I do think Sri Lanka is a beautiful country nature wise.
@LIndsayCordova I agree. Something sounded so genuine and hopeful about how she was saying it. I had a good friend that grew up during the civil war there. He had a very similar intensity in his love for Sri Lanka and hope for its future
it is indeed a magical place.
The neck lump thing I can explain. It's because the devotees in that temple carrying the statue are all Brahmins from the same family and caste and they just have a genetic disease that causes neck lumps in older male adults. Because Brahmins often intermarry extended family together it becomes very distinct.
The best holiday I've had so far was in Sri Lanka 2 months ago. It's a beautiful country, the people are friendly and the food is so delicious. I hope to go back in the near future.

What a spectacular finale to a spectacular series from our beautiful island Sri Lanka!😍🇱🇰A very big THANK YOU and forever grateful to Sonny and the BEST EVER FOOD REVIEW SHOW team for flying down at this crucial time and promoting the beauty of our island as it is imperative for tourism. Jaffna has been hidden and affected the most due to the civil war that was going on for almost 30 years. The citizens of Jaffna are very private and simple, but the city and cuisine are so colourful and bustling with flavours. This is the first time Jaffna has ever been featured this way on social media and KZhead to reach such a global audience. Especially this festival. In fact, even quite a few Sri Lankans have little to no clue about this festival, which is the longest festival procession on the island. There is beauty and amazing food in every corner of this island, may it be North, South, East, or West. Please visit Sri Lanka on your next holiday. Our magical island with absolutely divine cuisine awaits you. 🙏🏽❤️🇱🇰
You were absolutely spot on in what you said. We are a resilient nation. However, our extremely clever politicians keep on bringing us back to the rut.

Thank you for an amazing series of videos! You were a great co-host, both in your sense of humour and hospitality, and in your ability to show the positives of Sri Lanka even in the midst of such trying times for the country!
@@RuzainaHadgie You are a beacon of light in a perpetually dark place. I left SL 2 decades ago and now looking to come back. I remember witnessing the positivity in you even when Mark Wiens visited SL. As you rightly said Sri Lanka does not need any miracles. The tiny island itself is a miracle. I grew up in Kandy before moving to Colombo. I was blessed to have friends who are Muslim, Tamil, Burgher, Christian, Catholic, Malay etc. The beauty of it all is that all Sri Lankans love the country dearly. (I'm still surprised that the so-called Easter Bombing took place). I hope and pray that SL will resurrect and bounce back to normalcy. Also hope that the Govt will get the priorities right. We've been battered for many decades now. People, irrespective of their creeds and castes expect to be happy. To feed the kids, give them education, freedom etc. Unfortunately, politicians are distracted conveniently. Support tourism and much-needed dollars will come. Support the fishing industry and cultivation, kids won't go hungry. We have been self-sustained for many centuries. Let's revive our souls!! Much love and respect!! Assalam Alaikum, God Bless! Jesu Pihital, Budusaranai!! ❤🙏💪✌

So u r saying that your Family fled srilanka when Tamil tigers are fighting for ur rights and dying in the process. I respect Prabhakaran, he is a real Tamil tiger
@@Arunb15 Prabhakaran infringed the rights of Tamils more than Sri Lankan government. He raped Tamil women, kidnapped underaged teens, imprisoned people who were against him, didn't even hold an election in the north. Prabhakaran and his son were captured and killed by the Sri Lankan forces when they were fleeing from the war betraying his own people. Even one of the most brutal people, H*tler suicide instead of fleeing like a coward like Prabhakaran.
@@Arunb15 Some fled because they wanted to go where they can have a safe and build a better life. Others because there was fear of persecution. SL forces especially target Tamil young men to create a climate of fear and insecurity. A million Tamils have left the Tamil nation(North and East) since independence in 1948. No where else in SL that many.

Tamils value their own culture and language more than Indian culture; this is a problem. Some Tamils are even go as far as to say that their language is as old and sacred as even Sanskrit; Tamils needs to stop this and integrate in to the Indian culture just like everybody else.
@@Krishnahgg India is a union of states and similarly it is a union of different languages and cultures. This alone is the beauty of India. If all cultures integrate, this quality is lost. The world knows a lot about Indian Tamils but not a lot about Sri Lankan Tamils. Thank you for shining the spotlight on Sri Lankan Tamils who are an integral part of Sri Lanka with their unique culture and their heavenly Sri Lankan Tamil accent. Love it, love Sri Lanka.
Not just an accent, Sri Lankan Tamils have, according to linguists, their own peculiar group of dialects (Jaffnese, Trincomalean, Batticaloan,...) that are generally not mutually intelligible with Tamil dialects of India.
Actually, "the world" doesn't know much about Indian Tamils either, lol. Particularly in the West, all people know is Hindi, Hindu, chicken tikka masala, naan and samosas. I've met plenty of South Asian Americans that give me a confused look when I say I'm Tamil, especially if they're from places like Punjab or Bihar. I grew up in a very white Protestant area of Houston, and the concept of vegetarianism was extremely alien. So no, "the world" does not know "a lot" about Indian Tamils, LMAO.
@@nahor88 In my country (in Europe generally, outside the UK), they even know more about Sri Lankan Tamils than Indian Tamils ! People are so accustomed to Sri Lankan Tamils that they regularly assume every Dark South Asian looking people as Sri Lankan, rather than Indian (who are associated with "North Indian/Pakistani" appearance). I knew about the history of the Tamil-Sinhala conflict, but as I met Sri Lankan Tamils for the first time in my life, I started digging deep into the history of the people on the island. You did a very nice job pointing out the difference between the *Sri Lankan Tamils (Eelam Tamils/Ceylon Tamils/Jaffna Tamils)* as compared to the *Indian Tamils of Sri Lanka (Hill Country Tamils)* who came to the island and were brought by the British. Sri Lankan Tamils are the actual natives of the island, while the Indian Tamils came from Tamil Nadu. Yes they have a common ancestor, but they came from different time periods to the island.
Are you not forgetting the Sinhala people in that mix? They were the original people, even the Northern Tamils did not immigrate into this island nation before second century BC, and that land actually already were inhabited. The old capitol of the Sinhala nation and the royal court too for instance were located in Anuradhapura, until the Tamils begun immigrating into the north of the island, forcing the Sinhala to move the capitol first to Kandy and now Colombo.

@@1corinthians15.1-4kjv Sinhalese are the majority population of Sri Lankans, I can't forget! I have many Sinhalese friends. Ayobowan!
@@1corinthians15.1-4kjv I'm sorry, I don't know much into Sri Lankan history, but I do know that Ashoka's son Mahinda spread Buddhism to Sri Lanka, along with Tamils also having an ancient history as well.
You're going all out with every episode. I'm learning about places and cuisine I've never heard of before as well as people and tribes. Thanks for being so educational!
Everything that lady made looked absolutely incredible.
The food looked like some of the best, out of all the series’s. I would love to visit Sri Lanka. Peace and love from the UK ✌️
I'm from Sri lanka and I have been to Jaffna but I have never seen the lump tradition. We don't have any war here and the fuel problems are not there anymore. I request humbly from people around the world to visit Sri Lanka to experience our hospitality and lend us a hand to get back on track. Much love from Sri Lanka ❤️
... thank the Indians for lending you money to solve ur economic crisis
Have full reconciliation for those Tamils who were forced to flee the war, and for Tamil families who lost loved ones, homes, businesses and properties to the genocidal Sri Lankan Sinhalese Armed Forces, and their Puppet Master Sinhalese Governments throughout the decades of conflict. Hold the entire Rajapaksa family and their cronies accountable for the deaths of innocent Sri Lankan Tamil civilians, and treat them all as the War Criminals they are, by letting the Hague mete out the justice and punishment they deserve. Restore all properties and businesses to their rightful Tamil owners/survivors/successors, and compensate them with sufficient funds to allow them to establish themselves once more. Declare Tamil as an Official Language, have proportionate representation for Tamils in Parliament to start with, have free and fair elections and press, and allow Tamils to progress to hold key positions in both the military and the government. Allow Tamil to be taught in all schools, and treat all Tamil and Sinhalese students equally. Rebuild all previously predominantly Tamil areas, and demilitarise those same areas. Remove the shield of immunity from prosecution from ALL Sri Lankan government, military and police officials. And, finally, declare that all Sri Lankan Tamils are equal citizens in ALL respects, and are entitled to ALL rights, opportunities and responsibilities as their Sinhalese compatriots. Then, and ONLY then, will Sri Lanka know a lasting and prosperous peace. Otherwise, let Tamils have their Eezham, and leave them to live their lives in peace!
@@temperatechimp ....as an Indian i can assure that the singala will never do that, it's not in their nature, maybe some singala are kind , but they are the exception to the rule, Karma is something they will have to face.
@@universeofopulence, the Sri Lankan Tamil diaspora, along with the traumatised survivors, cannot wait for Karmic Justice, for it will take far longer than they will be alive. No, these things must be accomplished well within their lifetimes, or else all the injustices and atrocities against them will be forgotten, buried and suppressed at every opportunity by each successive Sinhalese government.
@@temperatechimp ... that is under idealised condition, but the powers that be are drunk on total control and their society at large is corrupt , only the almighty can do something.
Hi Sonny Thank you so much for coming to Jaffna. Finally Ruzaina has brought a big KZheadr to the North. Jaffna deserves to be recognized for their food. Most food in Sri lanka is Tamilan food but no recognition. Thank you Sonny and Ruzaina for this beautiful show. This episode in particular brought back so many memories and tears to my eyes. My parents also must be somewhere in sea of people at this festival at Nallur kovil. You guys are the best duo to point out the real story in Sri lanka.

Hi Sonny and Ruzaina. i cannot even begin to explain what a beautiful episode this is. I think this is the first time Jaffna my birth place has been show cased this way. Thank you to both of you for thinking of travelling so far up north of Sri lanka and show the diverse scene in Jaffna not just Dosei which most KZheadrs and news channels do. Such a great episode. Wish this episode was longer.
first time i've seen you guys recommended to me in over a year. Literally had no idea you guys were still uploading D: Guess I have plenty to binge!
Lots of love from Tamil Nadu, Murugan and the Muthaitharu pathi thirunagai from thirupaavai as background music, well made video ❤❤
The beauty of their temples is absolutely stunning! I've always wanted to go to Sri Lanka ever since I was a child, and I heard some of their myths and legends.
Thank you, sonny, for presenting Sri Lanka to the world In this hard time. Yes, Sri Lanka is a magical Island. Sri Lanka will fight back for its economic situation and people like you make a huge impact for that.
Beautiful Sri Lanka ❤ 🇮🇳
Awesome video ❤ Jaffna is my hometown and so happy to see you visiting my hometown and making this video and helping the tourism. Good on you and keep up your great work. Love your video 🎉
I love Sri Lanka food, and by the way, even the fruit is spicy! One of the first times down their, together with my now ex-wife and her family, we went for a family picnic and they talked about fruit salad, looking forward to that. Here in Denmark fruit salad is very sweet and with rich cream, a overly sweet desert. In Sri Lanka fruit salad is any fruit chopped into dices and sprinkled with chili or curry powder!
Sri Lanka is really a beautiful place. There absolutely no complaints! People should consider travelling to this country.
Love you Sonny!!!!! I have been with you from the beginning of this channel. I have learned so much and it's such an unimaginable pleasure to see you in my home country. Sri Lanka owes you humble gratitude for exposing our true beauty to the entire world. Your Sri Lankan fans will be cheering for you with love. Always. AHHPEACE!!!
