This Video Essay / Documentary talks about the entire history of Minecraft Manhunt (The Rise and Fall of Minecraft Manhunt) How the concept was created, milked to the point it became repetitive and eventually collapsed because of Dream, The Creator of the Concept.
Also this was completely coincidence that I finished right around this time and I guess it was time perfectly. Happy Birthday Dream. :)

  • Unpopular opinion, I think it was better that Dream ended it when he did. You act like Dream quit when manhunt was at its peak, but he didn’t. It was already in decline. I feel like if he just continued, it would’ve spiraled into what these copycats became. At least we have good memories of what it was.

    • Dream didn’t destroy manhunt. People just copied him because it was popular, and eventually when Dream decided to call it quits, fans had to fall back on these other KZheadrs. It’s like this for anything. Once the top dog that created the idea leaves, that idea falls off a cliff. Dream was untouchable and made the best manhunt videos and nobody ever came close. It’s sad but manhunt was only going to stay that popular for as long as Dream decided to do it. The fate of manhunt was literally in Dreams hand.

  • 27:49 The dislikes and hate comments on Dream’s music video weren’t from the disappointment of it not being a manhunt video, they were about dream’s character and behaviour online. I agree with other comments too that Dream’s cheating scandal would’ve been worth mentioning, as although this is not just a video about Dream, it had a lasting impact on the online attitude towards manhunts, especially from outside the Minecraft community.

    • That's the purpose of being scripted, to make the content actually entertaining. Know that if these were actual manhunt runs, Dream would most of the time just fail early on. If you were a Minecraft content creator, a good idea for a manhunt is to nerf the hunters and buff the victim, regardless of how you do it, but a staged run is also great since it adds more cinematic vibe.

Instead of being thankful that he actually uploaded for once to show his hard work for his fanbase, they all just throw an extremely childish temper tantrum, because it wasn't a 6 hunters manhunt. I myself used to watch Dream just like alot of other people, the manhunts were extraordinarily exciting, but as soon as i started seeing all this "Dream stan cringe" I pulled the plug to my interest in that guy. • But he did tease it as something else, the implications from what he presented was it would be that manhunt. Instead it was music, something that almost no one would care about otherwise. He knew no one would support it and had to get them to think it was something else to even bother with it and talking about it. So now people know he is making music. At least from my understanding of the situation this is basically false advertising to get publicity.

  • It was great that you made a video on this. I think this video might finally give the hint to the Manhunt community that they need to move on and accept that Manhunt is dead. Many creators lose motivation to make manhunts and quit but then come back 1 week later. Others just fully quit because they are scared that their channel is going to die when they get little views on content that isn't Manhunt related. I quit making straight Minecraft Manhunt videos 3 months ago and it was the best thing that could have happened to me. I have been able to start making other styles of content like my recent video that were really fun to record with my friends. I really want others to move on as well, but I don't have control over the content they make so that's why I stopped trying to convince them. But hopefully they figure it out on their own. Thanks for making this video it was definitely worth the wait.

Yes, Dream was good, and when passion is continued, those who love it stay, but after the huge two-sided feedback Dream gets, from stans begging to know him personally to hater attempting to “expose” him, Dream was kinda forced to leave Minecraft. You may say that over-expressed hate and love is a stupid reason to leave, but keep this in mind: “If you were in Dream’s position, wouldn’t you?”

  • I do honestly think that the issue with Manhunt is it's seemingly lost the original idea of the Manhunt This wasn't some ultra competitive thing; this was a group of friends having genuine fun. It was where friends could chat about things while doing something productive and fun. Seriously, in a lot of these videos, you can feel the excitement the winning team exudes when they get out of a confrontation, or pull of a sick escape. It did have that competitive edge, but that was mostly because of the time spent in manhunts. Of course you would take a defeat in the end more seriously then you would defeat in the nether. However, people appeared to only focus on the competitive aspect. the jokes and friends building were second place to genuinely having fun, which accelerated the decline. Of course, new variations of the same formula exist, but after a while, it'll usually reach the same idea. In order to give a resurgence to manhunt, one would have to do something that is different, and unique. But that will just restart the cycle. It is the unfortunate nature of minecraft content that because of the sheer amount of it, you either have to go with the flow of repeated content, or drown in the stream in an attempt to champion a creative idea.

    @m.2039@m.20399 ай бұрын
    • its actually really hard to do. I tried it with my mate and i kept beating him within the first few minutes. And when he was chasing me, we had the same issue. He could beat me with ease. Its easy to see why people say they manhunts are scripted now. To things like the flying machine, the "its gonna end how it started buddy, me and you" line in the finale, the lava roof trap, the invisibility to leave the nether for BBH to say a second later "Oh keep an eye out for him btw"

      @AzguardMike@AzguardMike8 ай бұрын
    • In Minecraft you are given an opportunity to come up with lots creative and amazing ideas for a minigame, because the 'craft' in Minecraft stands for crafting literally anything you could think of that can bring joy. Manhunt was a really creative idea but it was bound to lose its originality. You cannot use the same idea forever, so why stick with one idea when you can just make other ideas? It's the same problem with Mr. Beast copies, people just want attention and fame.

    • I actually quite like KIER & DEV's content because they're all genuine friends. They do a _lot_ of manhunts and are milking it, sure, but they're all genuinely great to just listen to. I put them on when I'm on long car rides or need a playlist to fall asleep to. They're all just having fun, and I really like that. Is it faked? Some parts probably are. They probably use a mod to increase piglin RNG, too, and their seeds are definitely set. But I don't really care. It's really rare to just see a group of friends just do stupid shit. It gives me classic Vanoss vibes for some reason.

      @piyo744@piyo7447 ай бұрын
    • But what if the flow is people using your logic in mass? Going with the flow becomes outright an excuse to deceive, hurt others, and take the easy way out. What you described is a self eating cycle. It isn't the nature of Minecraft content, it is the nature of ignorance, greed, and pride combined.

  • I used to watch a couple of manhunts during dream's prime, and I quickly got bored of them. Because they all just felt the same. Dream runs of whilst his friends are busy talking amongst themselves or something, gets a bucket, makes a nether portal, collects stuff in the nether, leave, find the stronghold, enter the end, and kill the dragon. That might just be a speedrunner strat, but it just got stale after a while. And all the clutch moments, dream gets cornered, the gang says "oh dream" or "bye dream", dream does a crazy move, they all go "what" or "he's not dead", and dream either kills them or runs away. It also didn't help that those "clutch moments" just felt fake. Like one time dream got cornered and threw a potion of invisibillity down, and they all just stopped to figure out who dream was, like they didn't have object permanence or something. At this point I just stopped watching dream completely. I just wanted to see what the fuss was all about and why he was suddenly the most popular minecraft youtuber, and I didn't understand then and I still don't understand now. Maybe I'm just not with the times, I used to watch Skydoesminecraft and his friends play mini-games like 'the wall' and 'cops and robbers' and the 'epic jump maps', and SlyFoxHound and his 'minecraft daily' and 'minecraft marriage' series, just people messing around with their friends in minecraft, and I guess that those types of videos don't rake in the views anymore. Or maybe the kids these days just don't know what good content is, and just flock to the videos with loud screaming. I don't know. All I do know is that dream is just boring.

  • Interesting documentation of the history! I definitely agree that Dream's channel heavily popularised the manhunt and added to the oversaturation of the idea, but I wouldn't necessarily say that the downfall was as a result of him... I feel like it was more of a combination of the further saturation by the community and the general lifespan of trends, making manhunts less enjoyable than they used to be Let me know what you think though... I still need to watch through the video so I'll see what the full point is! Edit: Watched through the entire video now... Very well done! And I'm glad that you all did indeed touch on the effects of manhunts on the community, looking at it from a broader perspective than just the prevalent "DREAM DID SOMETHING WRONG" type of videos all over the platform. Thank you for educating me on the topic :)

    • The title is a bit of an over statement for sure, but inevitably Dream's last manhunt was what started the slow decline because of the oversaturation from everyone else, it could've just died instantly but it was slow and painful as shown from Chapter 4. • The fact that this guy calls one of the most controversial characters in fandom history popularizing and inviting waves of toxic drama causers into a community that was primarily doing just fine “The Downfall and Subsequent Saving of Minecraft” just proves how corruptive blindly idolizing someone is. Just because number of search terms goes up doesn’t mean the community gets better. A bad person abused a KZhead algorithm to introduce much worse people into the community, and he treats him as a second coming because he’s “not as bad as they are”? Never idolize someone like Vixios has, it makes you okay with some seriously terrible things.

  • Man that ending hit hard as well as this entire video. I cannot describe the amount of satisfaction I felt for someone to finally address in a formal video that fake manhunts may have changed Manhunt for the worse in some cases even though there are still many good things that can come out of it. It’s sad to see the manhunt community and the idea itself left in shambles. And with all of its main creators quitting the days of manhunt may truly be over. I hope that one day, someone will bring a new, fresh idea or perspective to Minecraft again. Maybe even Dream. For now the idea that once soared over everything will finally rest.

  • See, even not being a dream fan I still think there should be distincton between staging gameplay and guiding gameplay. "staging" or "scripting" the manhunt would mean they follow a very precise plot of events. I don't think this is the case, since the players, even today, still provide commentary about their personal strategic thought processes, which you wouldn't get if it were scripted. What I do recognize, and what I urge others to recognize too, is that they all do their best to make an entertaining video. This means not trying as hard as they possibly could to kill Dream, or allowing Dream to reset a failed clutch, but NOT meaning Dream telling the hunters what he's planning to do, telling them to play along. Obviously if they did try their absolute hardest, they would probably kill dream in five minutes every video. They make improvised decisions along the video that they know will make a more theatrical video. I just find it statistically unlikely for anyone to stage hour long gameplay videos without messing up, as we've gotten with some uncut manhunts.

Clock" where we would attempt to beat the game as fast as possible while we hunt each other down constantly. We were going to make some shitty low quality youtube videos at the time, so I even had (now lost) recordings somewhere of us starting to play the game and then getting bored and playing on our SMP instead. The recordings are on a dead drive, but I do have the original idea written down in a notebook and photographed onto my phone from around that time period. Neither of the 3 of us that played the game when I just got the idea expected our idea to be reborn and being one of the most popular Minecraft minigames ever.

By that, I mean they invited me to their server, gave me exactly 1 iron helm, and excitedly pushed me through the portal to the Nether to show me the fortress. I believe their words were "You'll be fine, you'll get loot from chests !". I spent the next hour dying on repeat, and never touched the game again. Fast forward to a month ago, when one of those same friends redeemed himself by actually showing me some beautiful Minecraft videos, which in turn made Minecraft content flood my recommended. In the bunch, some manhunt videos. And now, this one. Even to a complete stranger to the game, this documentary is very pleasant to watch. I liked learning about the history of that one block game and the rise and fall of one of its popular content creations. Thank you for the beautiful video ! When it comes to other people making manhunts, it'll probably look fine without all those quick reaction fast plays like the boat, grabbing ender pearls with a fishing rod, whatever. What makes a lot of those scenes feel hard is the sound design behind them, and that could be a potential starting point for others trying to make any good video.

  • Nice documentary. I followed dream since his early days before manhunt. I liked the guy, seemed very competent. Then I saw his first manhunt and I liked it, it was original and tense while still being organic. And then come the next manhunt, and it was even better, then the next. However it was very clear, that making something interesting that has this tense, tricks, which is better then the previous one won't last forever. Even some moves in Dreams manhunt feeled staged, but it was acceptable, as still seemed somewhat organic and original. However the internet started to fill with copies which I never watched as it was unoriginal. Dream raised the stakes, but it was clear, it won't last long, and the fame started to go in Dreams mind. His fans started hyping him as the best minecraft player, but there is always a better player. Dream started speedrunning, and he done it well, but being a World Recorder takes much more then skill, and he knew that, and cheated. First I did not wanted to believe it, but when I saw the numbers, it was clear. After that, the fame and hype around Dream has deminished, and it was clear. It will be over soon. And I was right, Dream returned for the final manhunt. It was still great, but you could feel the burnout in Dream. After that he finished it, burnout, and may never return. This trend is not unique, it happened with many famous man, and if you followed Dream with a clear mind (no hype and no hate), the fate was very clear.
