CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Max (Robert Forster) comes over to Jackie's (Pam Grier) to pick up his gun. They have a cup of coffee, and listen to an LP by The Delfonics.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Quentin Tarantino wrote and directed this adaptation of Elmore Leonard's 1995 Rum Punch, switching the action from Miami to LA, and altering the central character from white to black. Ruthless arms dealer Ordell Robbie (Samuel L. Jackson), who lives with perpetually stoned beach-babe Melanie (Bridget Fonda), teams with his old buddy Louis Gara (Robert De Niro), just released from prison after serving four years for armed robbery. ATF agent Ray Nicolette (Michael Keaton) and cop Mark Dargus (Michael Bowen) bust stewardess Jackie Brown (Pam Grier), who was smuggling money into the country for Ordell. Ordell springs Jackie, but when middle-aged bail bondsman Max Cherry (Robert Forster) picks her up at the jail, he's attracted to her, and they choose a romantic route with detours. Mistrust and suspicions surface after Jackie pits Ordell and the cops against each other, convincing Ordell that she's going to double-cross the cops. Tarantino commented on the film's budget: "Jackie Brown only cost $12 million. You can't lose. You absolutely, positively can't lose. And you don't have to compromise."

"black's fine" - Max Cherry we know Max, we know ;)
she's more mocha tho
Pam is super sexy
Daniel Roberts we all know Tarantino like some chocolate in his milkshake
MystikalScope Productions Yeah, he likes feet, too!
@Daniel Roberts I had no idea this was based on a book... I got some reading to do.
Max is the sweetest Tarantino character and there isn’t even a close second. My heart broke when I heard the news, but I’m so happy we have this beautiful performance to remember him by.
Absolutely. Best thing to have happened to his career.
Derek Langston 💯💯💯💯
I love Shosanna in Inglorious, but I agree Max is #1. RIP Robert Forrester
Its a crime neither got the oscar for this
he was great in Breaking Bad too
I like the way he looks at her...like he has never seen anyone like her.
yea thats how you look at a woman you feel for
ohsnapiam59 Yeah, you definitely get the impression of how he feels for her when he bailed her out of the county jail the night before and looked at her as she was walking towards him
@@DackupDoo The woman he delivered to jail, Anita Lopez, was a lot younger and rather hot but he never stepped out of professionalism with her whereas he is prepared to overlook Jackie "borrowing" his gun and is prepared to let her hold on to the gun longer. Yes, he is smitten...
@@kaczynskis5721 When he hears about the gun he realises she isn't the person he thought he knew. Then he steered the conversation away.
Shes so gorgeous and exotic I love Pam . Her past makes me sad but she survived. She has a new life documentary/ movie coming out soon shes been working on.
RIP Robert Forster 1941-2019 farewell...
This role, and Breaking Bad I really liked him in..he was great...
I heard De Niro wanted the part of Max Cherry but Tarantino was dead set on Forster for the role and stuck with it. A brilliant decision. What a beautiful performance he gave and what chemistry he had with Pam. I've heard he was a lovely, humble man in real life and treated everyone with kindness and respect. Rest in peace Mr. Forster, you will never be forgotten.
De Niro incidentally played a bounty hunter in a movie called Midnight Run about 10 years earlier. Also an excellent movie that reminds me a bit of QTs style.
Wow I can see dinero playing max cheery by I'm glad he stuck with his decision. That guy is awesome
De Niro would've also been brilliant. He's wonderful when he plays these type of characters: like he did in "Awkenings", but Robert Forster is sensational! How do you choose between the two?
There was an interview with Forster where he said that he was up for a role in Reservoir Dogs, but some other actor got it. I think it had to have been the Harvey Keitel part.
I met Robert Forster in Hollywood. He was super nice
RIP Robert Forster, you knocked this role out of the park.
Robert forster was a little New Wave for my taste. But when Jackie Brown came out in 97 he really came into his own.
Didn't he???? awesome!
I relate so much to his character its scary
Maybe his best character
Easily Quentin Tarantino's most underrated film
Most underrated and most hated of his filmography... What a tragedy
You are right.
Michael Otis I don't know anyone who hates it. Most of the hate goes to the Hateful Eight these days.
also his best.
I would say it's his most underappreciated work. It got good reviews.
I love the shot of Max quietly smiling while watching Jackie in her bathrobe, little makeup, just grooving to Didn't I on a random morning. He's falling in love with her right then and there. Who wouldn't?
“...but i can’t afford to start all over again” Unforgettable film.
"The milk went bad while I was in jail" If thats not a brilliant line I dont know what is.
Max Cherry always felt like the most innocent of all Tarantino's characters.
“Who is this?” “The Del Fonics.” I love her delivery
Can’t imagine anyone better than Forster for this, man he was perfect. May he rest in peace
How about me?I have the right age now!
"You can't get new stuff on records." Give a few years, Max.
give it like 20 years
@@octoman511 more like 15. This was 97, records came back in the early 10s
@@octoman511 Yep--CDs are basically dead, and people are mostly buying records now if they're getting a physical copy.
You could absolutely still get new titles on vinyl in the ‘90s. In fact it might have been the best time to collect since no one was buying them and original pressings of 90’s albums have skyrocketed in value now
Really a shame Tarantino didn't continue going in this direction. The dialogue and mood here are so much more mature and real than is usual for him. Very well-written and well-acted scene.
Exactly. I remember when this came out I knew it was a masterpiece and that he really elevated himself as a director since Pulp Fiction. Couldn't wait for his next movie only to be disappointed by his over the top shocker flick.
@@anawkwardlifemedia totally true. I want to see Tarantino make a tv series as we know he is excellent at characterisation and the longer format of TV would be the ideal platform for it.
He designed this film to feel like something he would make in his 40s. I find it strange that his later work was far less mature.
I’d say Once Upon a Time in Hollywood was his return to his Jackie Brown style with the exception of the ending. Just a slice of life story where one of the best scenes is Cliff just feeding his dog and warming up some mac n’ cheese.
It's cause Jackie brown tanked at the box office so he switched to the violence eg kill bill and so on
My absolute favorite QT film. And this scene, is one of the sexiest scenes in the entire film. Just two people, talking, relating. And Max is clearly smitten with her, clearly evidenced by seeing her for the first time as he picks her up from jail.
What I LOVED about this film was that it centered on a mature love relationship of two middle aged people, not with perfect bodies, and with faces that showed they had lived. The chemistry between the two of them was better than 98% of the stuff I see with the current crop of actors. LaLa Land had nothing on this film.
loved your synapse of this scene.
Second favourite to Once Upon A Time In Hollywood. Jackie Brown is such an underrated movie, love every second of it.
My favorite as well, and I’m quite a fan of most of his films.
@@carollipton4584 same. I've always felt the same.
RIP Robert Forster. Their scenes and chemistry were amazing. This is Tarantino’s best film in my book. A small crime caper that’s secretly a romance and drama about growing old.
Yes! This is hands down better than pulp fiction
Agree 100%. I've saying this for years- it's his best film and Sam Jackson's best performance.
@@Dana-wq5tp Robert Forster had a really terrific send off in El Camino. He was the most compelling vacuum salesman ever in entertainment.
@@jaredbellow I loved El Camino! I will sometimes cue it up and watch his scenes again as I love them so much.
I like the fact these two aging people simply let go of all notions about putting on an act, keeping a distance from others, etc. one gains as an adult. They are simply at ease, comfortable in each other's presence. They both know the other's story, they know neither's life is exactly lighting the world on fire, but they are keeping it aside and just relating to each other as human beings, as if they were young actually. She knows she's in big trouble, her life is on the line quite literally, so she just accepts the good Max offers, because, well, why the hell not? And he knows she is trouble, but he likes her and perhaps feels she is in a position where she will accept his attempts to be more friendly. Very nice romance this movie.
@PiCheZvara One of the best love stories put to film. This and Max seeing her in the mall are my favourite moments.
She used him to her advantage she never cared about him if she did she would've stood with him
@@inyourelilsistersass5554 I don't think that's true at all. She wouldn't have offered him to come with her or offered half the money if she didn't care for him.
@@DeimosA_ na she's a peice.of trash
I was just thinking this. She was beautiful in Foxy Brown and Coffy, but she was 48 years old when she did Jackie Brown, and still a fine looking woman.
The chemistry, the tenderness of these characters, two lost souls in the sea of loneliness, together sharing their lives. Is a magical moment in the cinema of Tarantino and, by far, the best performance of Pam Grier and Robert Forster ever
Grier deserved every bit of recognition she got for this role and more.
Jackie Brown grew on me. This is now my favorite Tarantino Movie. Because of scenes like this. He gives the characters and scenes enough time and space. Look at him at 1:40. This is what falling in love looks like.
Pam Grier looked beautiful in the whole film but in my opinion she looked stunning in this scene. Natural beauty 😁
RIP Robert Forster. One of the coolest damn actors that ever lived! 💔
1:51 Love when he says “Pretty” so that she thinks he’s talking about the song but he was really referring to her. Like he wouldn’t mind waking up to seeing her sing in a robe every morning.
As I just turned 40, this scene hits differently now. It makes more sense, not that it was out there before, but it just hits true.
Pam Grier and Robert Forster were Iconic their films during the 70s and it's good to see them together in a Film where their chemistry shines. Hats off to Quentin Tarantino. Kudos to Pam Grier and Robert Forster. RIP Robert Forster
When Max says "pretty" and "it's nice" it's as much an appreciation of her as it is for the music.
1:53 Memories reemerge and bring tears to her eyes, he notices it. Wonderful acting.
Some people say Jackie Brown is one of Taantino´s worst - I don´t think so, I think it´s one of his best!
Yeah it's good, but it pales in comparison to Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, Inglorious Bastards, and Django Unchained. I think that's what people mean.
Austin Boylan Well, depends on the viewer is all I can say.
Austin Boylan Personally I find it better than Django.
WhiteSlift Fair enough. I'll respect your opinion.
OneManProduct Here's the thing: there are two different levels of understandings for a Tarantino movie. Some people like Tarantino for the wickty-ass bullshit that happens on screen, and others like him for his superb ability to create drama. For Jackie Brown Tarantino put all the chips on the drama side, and if you ask me, that's what makes this particular movie better than all his other works.
Helluva vinyl collection judging by her choice and the fact that Bobby "Blue" Bland's "California Album" is front and center right there.
RIP Robert Forster (Max Cherry). So cool.
Such a relaxed, but intense scene. Tarantino will be remembered for all kinds of thing, but this is film mastery, right here. Subtle, but saying truckloads.
Best Tarantino Film without a doubt; best plotline, best acting, best soundtrack.
+Conal Quinn It's actually an adaptation of the novel "Rum Punch" by Elmore Leonard.
2wingo Which is why it's the only thing he's ever made with discipline
I wouldn't say best. In my opinion, Django Unchained is his best. This movie is still good though.
In reality, this is probably his worst movie
@@gregjames970 ABSOLUTE garbage you spewed 4 years back. From technical point of view, this is VERY easily in his top 4. This, Inglourious Basterds, Pulp Fiction and The Hateful Eight. Nothing else in his filmography comes even close.
I know this is extremely immature but I can't help but laugh when Robert Forrester's character says "Blacks fine". lol, almost like he was hinting at something.
The exact reaction Tarantino intended to provoke. It was no hint. The implication is obvious.
Lol
+Robert Thomas The character isn't necessarily hinting at something, but Tarentino (or the writer) is. We the viewer are supposed to realize that the character doesn't have a problem with black people, even though in that moment the character might only be thinking about coffee.
would be worse if he said "i like it black" haha
"you went out this morning and bought a gun?" Makes me laugh every time.
You know my friend and I were just talkin the other day about what a great movie "Jackie Brown" is and we both came to the conclusion that Robert Forster stole that movie. Then we found out he had passed a week or so ago and we both were very saddened to hear of it. He seemed to be an old school gentleman by all accounts and one helluva man. Peace to your memory sir.
I don't care if this is Tarantino's only movie he did that was an adaptation of another author....he always gets the most incredible performances out of his cast. To watch Robert Forster fall in love with Pam Grier (her love for him comes later but it does come) is beautiful acting.
The scene in Kill Bill Vol. 2 where Elle says "So this is a Hattori Hanzo sword.." to Budd while he is using his blender and he then asks her to repeat it is a nod to this scene. I love the subtle common threads that weave their way throughout all of Quentin's works.
Lol um no
Lol um ya
Rest in peace, Max Cherry actor Robert Forster.
Quentin certainly used his time after making Pulp Fiction wisely. A movie that respectfully lowers the amount of physical violence, wisely raises the amount of drama and sharp dialogue, and provides a character with more charm than Vincent Vega, more grace than Mia Wallace, and more attitude than Jules Winnfield and Butch Coolidge, Mr. Tarantino certainly surprised the fans without displeasing.
In my opinion this is Tarantino's masterpiece. I love Pulp Fiction, but I think Jackie Brown stands above it. And considering how amazing Pulp Fiction is, that's saying a LOT. This might actually be my pick for the greatest film in the last 20 years.
Jackie Brown has more humanity than Pulp Fiction. In PF, everybody is so cool and slick, but JB people are much more authentic.
Couldn't have said it better myself.
@@IgnatzKolisch Im troubled by it, sometimes it's Jackie, sometimes is Pulp, and sometimes it's Once upon the Time. Now far behind is Kill Bill too.
R.I.P Mr Forster
Most underrated Tarantino's film.
Rest in peace Mr. Forster, never forgotten.
Man I love this movie.
The genius of Tarantino. He definitely doesn't just pick songs randomly... Each one always fits a scene.
Amazing actors / characters, so much elegance in both of them
His most underrated movie. When I watched it I was shocked it didn't have a higher imdb rating. Should be higher.
Max is so completely lost in her and it’s beautiful
Gawd, I almost forgot how great that movie is... One of the best I've seen, definitely Top 5
gawd...loved the Delfonics back then and still do! THIS was such a great scene!
Pam as Jackie was way beyond acting in that moment I think love was captured
The "CD revolution", LOL. Man, the expression "time flies" has never been truer in the last 30 years :D
Back in 97, CD's we're fucking huge and records died... Now in 2015, CD's are dead and records are back... What a strange world we live in !!!
If you can find some mainstream albums from 1995-1998 on vinyl. The values range in the thousands. Major labels stopped pressing except for promotional/friends and family vinyls. Usually less than 50.
To this day I will never understand how Pam Grier didn't receive a Best Actress nomination for Jackie Brown. The nominees that year were: Judi Dench: Mrs Brown Helen Hunt: As Good As It Gets Helena Bonham Carter: The Wings of the Dove Kate Winslet: Titanic Julie Christie: Afterglow With the exception of Judi Dench, I would have been happy for Pam to replace any of the other nominees.
I've always wondered how Helen Hunt got that Oscar.
@@amandawhisnant622 Me too.
RIP Robert forester!! You were made to be Max Cherry!
rest in peace Mr.Forster
RIP Richard Forster ❤
When you're dating a white guy and introduce him to some real soul music! LMAO
Works every time! 👍😊
Lol I had a bit if luck going the other way, I impressed a young lady when she she found me singing "midnight train to Georgia" at work. She was shocked a Latino guy knew that song and asked where I learned to sing it, I replied that my mom raised me on "oldies", Frank Sinatra, Otis Redding, Aretha Franklin, the Rolling stones, and just about anything written before 1980... I can't hold a tune in a bucket, but break out a little Etta James and you can turn some girls to jelly.
Bedwinch
Daaannng I absolutely love the way QT shoots this scene Max Cherry is solely focused on her and she him and she let's the power of vinyl record music take over her moment!!
I always saw Robert Forsters character as a mix of the Good Cowboy type plucked out of the old 60's romance films, and the Melancholic Romantic from more modern romance films both types from those movies, put together and aged like fine wine. My absolute favourite scene is when him and Jackie meet up and talk about the night before, and he mentions off handed how he proceeded with his night, not caring about the details of the story because his night is so normal for him, whether it's getting out another gun and a stun gun or whether or not if he used the stun gun, he only wants to get to the point to where he can talk about retiring after just looking upon Jackie, and how right then on that night it changed him, he is obviously a man of action and justice, but in the moments you see him in the time the film takes place he is just so taken aback by this true beauty before him, and spends the film almost "off" from what his full "normal" self would be. Truly one of my favourite characters from Quintin Tarantino, well written and amazingly acted by the late Robert Forester.
I love this film, it holds a special place in my heart. Robert Forster and Pam Grier became two of my favouite performers overnight based on this work alone. Rest in peace Robert Forster.
Robert Forrester: "Black's fine."
I so love this scene. Underrated movie
RIP Robert Forster 💔
"I don't get new stuff that often". I wonder if that is a reference to the actress Pam Grier no having many leading roles since the 70's.
No, it just means people of certain age does not need modern crap music. They listen music they like, and most of it is from their youth .
" I don't get new stuff that often"
I despise the new stuff. I will die with my old stuff.
Delfonics one of my favorite groups of that era . “Didn’t I Blow Your Mind” RIP Forster
RIP William “Poogie” Hart, July 2022, Delfonics lead singer.
Pam Grier is so beautiful and amazing in this scene. I wish Jackie would have teamed up with Thelma and Louise......minus the driving over the cliff.
Robert Baldwin Add Beatrix kiddo and miss Mia wallice We would be good
I got to meet and shake hands with Pam Grier in 2000 @ a Black Women In Film discussion @ NYU. She was onstage with Sonya Braga and they talked to audience members after. I thanked her for her amazing performance and told her it got me through several trials. She was really appreciative and so warm.
Robert Forster is mesmerising in this role. One of the best performances in any Tarantino film. RIP Robert.
i so remember how little-regarded this movie was when it came out. we just didn't get it. it wasn't at all what we thought it was gonna be. God bless you, Mr. Tarantino. this is your masterwork. and _Once Upon a Time_ was so, so great. American Master.
Dude the whole bit about her invested time in the record collection and then him saying but you can't get new stuff on records is a perfect encapsulation of how I feel about games 🎮. Gonna try to always have the SNES around even when games are being released like crazy for pc/console . I've invested to much time in the oldies 😏
Rip to Robert Forster
They vibed so good was I the only one who noticed this?
R.I.P Robert Forster! Very talented and underrated 😎
Love this movie. Tarantino early works set the foundation for his career..anything he does i like..I just like good conversations. Even in books I always used to skip those long paragraphs and went straight to the quotations that started a conversation..and he does it perfect in his movies......
I saw the Delfonics in concert in Dayton, Ohio at the Dayton Convention Center in May of 2004 along with Lenny Williams. I met the Delfonics and Lenny Williams and took pictures with them. Unfortunately, I lost the pics, but the show was simply marvelous. Old school music is a marvelous conversation starter.
That's so awesome! What a great memory to have.
Getting ready to watch it again
Love how the Legendary Delfonics , Blow your mind is used here in this great scene, That's what I love about records, Great classics like this, R I P Robert Forster 1941-2019
Max totally smitten. Great film.
w amazing
0:37 "....Somebody loan it to you?" "....Yeaahh........." *Max Cherry's face, slightly confused, MOSTLY intrigued* THIS is what compelling character drama is built on. Relatable, yet fascinatingly-heightened dramatic stakes, only hinted at.
Love this scene. Max is getting a little interested in Jackie...Asks who it is she's playing. The Del-Fonics. Next thing you know, he's in a record shop picking up a Del-Fonics tape. Tarantino advances the relationship without anything apparent happening. Pulp Fiction is good, but I think this is his most considered film because you get to know the characters before everything jumps off.
He was in either Sam Goody or Musicland. I can't remember which one as it has been a long time since I saw the movie. Both were owned by the same parent company. I worked at Musicland when this movie came out.
Great writing, great performances. They talk about nothing but communicate a whole lot

Rest in Peace Mr Robert Forster (Max Cherry).
this is my favorite tarantino film.
Quentin Tarantino met Robert Forster in a restaurant and handed him the script, saying "You're going to do this, and that's all there is to it". Forster was naturally thrilled, having had a major career slump. This film saw him come back in a big way, even landing an Oscar nomination.
My second favorite Tarantino film, only to Django. Just an absolute masterpiece.
I know it's acting but I thought the chemistry between these was real...probably proof in the pudding that this is a top top movie
Forrester played this role so well! You couldn't help BUT believe he had a serious case of jungle fever! No wonder he was nominated for an Oscar for this role! Liked him in Breaking Bad also
Probably about 90% of white males who watched this movie caught jungle fever watching this scene, myself included. Heck the fever had me when Jackie was walking out of jail to Bloodstone's "Natural High"
I think we all deeply "RIP MAX CHERRY" because we wanted a 2nd movie with him (and his reunion with Jackie). Robert Forster held so much space. HELD It. WITH PAM GRIER in the room. Yall this is QT best movie. Love. real love. they had so much chemistry
South Bay in the 80's!... I grew up in Gardena and Hawthorne so all of Tarantino's films feel like home to me
QT at his most earthy, cosy and homely here. The dialogue feels ever so natural here. It's a gentle patter.
Pam Grier is so beautiful in this film. I love it.
