  • You should get a radio GPS collar for Max so he can continuously "mark" his own pin. It will make it much easier to find him so you can bring him with you more often.

    • That would be a great idea! Additionally, with Max being the breed that he is, he does not have an instinct to stay near, or “herd” his people. He is more of a hunting breed, which is why hunting breeds need firm command training to stay near. Lady and Peanut both have the herding instinct and require minimal effort to keep nearby.

My two girls never go far, always check what's ahead, but never go too far and never leave my line of sight. I finally trained them to find him. So now if he's lost they will find where he's hiding. One thing, the expanse where you are is something else though. Everything where I am is with an hour walking distance and he never goes much further than that.

    • Older retrievers tend to get tunnel vision. It can really alter their behavior and ability to know where they're going. They lose the peripheral of their vision and tend to run off with their face down because they're relying more heavily on smell/sound. Then they look up without realizing they've been running away for a half mile and start to panic.

I purchased a trac phone to use as an MP3 player, and to run Avenza, which keeps and runs maps without cell coverage, and the compass on an Iphone will show your GPS coordinates.

      @coopercovelo@coopercovelo17 күн бұрын
    • @@coopercovelo AFAIK even the maps app, at least on android and google maps will show coordinates without cell service. Its also a good idea to just download the maps of your local/hiking/offroading area to your phones storage so that you arent dependent on cell service to see maps.

    • @@coopercoveloCoordinates are nice and useful, but even moreso if you can actually get them to someone when you need help... • You don't need an inreach. They're helpful but overkill for most people. Your cell phone without service is 100% capable of marking your GPS location just as accurately as an inreach. Nowadays phones can even use sat to SOS, so you really don't need an inreach.

    • Air tag wouldn't work without other iPhones in the area to "report" his location back. If he's out in the rocks you won't get any useful location. Those are best in densely populated areas, not in remote country with minimal cell service and reliance on "i devices" to pass on the data.

  • Everyone keeps saying to get a GPS collar for Max. But it would still need cell data service to send the GPS coordinates to someone. And the places Max will go adventuring probably doesn't have any cell signal at all, or only intermittent. People know to get to high ground to try and get a connection, but Max wouldn't know to do that.

    • There are GPS collars for dogs that use radio frequencies and a dedicated receiver to allow GPS tracking without cell signals- like Dogtra or Garmin. We use them on our SAR dogs, and get 5-10 miles of range in the woods of the Southeast.
