How to know your gaming mouse grip | Advanced Grip Guide

To help clarify what kinds of grips we're using on gaming mice, I put some extra thought into how we could define them and made this list. It's a new idea, I don't know where it will take us, if anywhere, just trying something different. Hoping it helps people get better recommendations as we specify the important parts, without going too in depth.
So what's your grip style based on this list and what mouse do you find is best for it?
And yeah if you're using a Cooler Master MM720, I guess that's a form of 131 grip. If you want your ring finger rested, you'll have to specify that when asking for advice.

  • Great job codifying the different elements of mouse grip styles. It is too easy to reduce everything to the big three of palm, claw, and fingertip with some hybrids in the middle, but this helps make it much more detailed and specific to easily classify and identify a specific grip style. Well done! Here is my grip style: 1. Anchored 2. Straight 3. No Palm Contact with Mouse 4. Relaxed Fingertip 5. Wheel Tips 6. Together Mice: Razer Viper Mini on main PC and Razer Orochi V2 for mobile/home entertainment use.

  • I adjust my grip slightly depending on game and scenario. The two best examples I can think of are how high I position my fingers and whether I use 122 or 131. For Apex and CSGO I use 131 most of the time since I like using scrollwheel for jump while not having to give up m1 or m2 temporarly. For games where I dont need my scrollwheel that often (for example diabotical, osu, titanfall, ...) or in situations where I need to hold an angle, knowing I wont use m2 any time soon (for example with awp in csgo) I use 122. How high I position my fingers is rather random. Sometimes I position my fingers higher up since it feels like it takes less force to click (sometimes helpful for spamclicking) other times I just stretch out my fingers a bit more and put them next to my scrollwheel.

  • Anchored, straight angle , my thumb and my pinky touching pad(even fingertip of both pinky and ring finger touching pad). I do this because I like the feedback I get from the pad, feels like I have way more control. This suits my pretty low sens, snappy style of aiming, 60~cm/360. My fingers ends up in a relaxed fingertip grip with my fingertips resting on the front edge of the buttons, I got pretty long fingers. Finger spread is 1 2 2

    @KJackMP3@KJackMP3 Жыл бұрын
  • Angled, straight, palm, overhang, 131. I have long fingers and grew up gaming on OEM mice on school computers, so this combined with a large and long mouse like the G703 has been extremely comfortable, however after years of muscle memory with the G600 (forced "122" style grip because ring finger rest) because it was cheap and had an okay sensor, it's hard using a mouse that doesn't have a ring finger button, let alone a ring finger rest. I think my ideal mouse would be a 703 with a ring finger button and maybe even a pinky button

    • @@decadence6418 Ey, I also had a viper mini before handing it down to my brother. Movement was a bit awkward as viper mini was slightly too small for me. Other than that, mini is a certainly a good mouse. GPX on the other hand is slightly too big. If viper mini's size is perfect for you, I imagine GPX would be too large. Not the best mouse IMO, but overall still great for general usage & FPS games. 9/10 build quality, 8/10 shape, 6/10 size. Would recommend.

  • I've always thought of myself as having a "claw-tip" grip when playing games. Well, I guess not _"always"_ since I had to like... actually look at what my hand was doing when playing a game before I noticed. What I mean by that, is the way I hold a mouse when just doing "Windows stuff" is _wayy_ different than how I hold it when playing a game. I actually didn't notice this until I was playing Doom 4 (2016), I think. I noticed that when I play a game, I grip the mouse really tightly with just my tips and my fingers were really arched. 1. Elevated 2. Angled 3. Uh... no palm 4. Claw ( _+fingertip_ ) 5. Behind... wheel ( _typo?_ )? 6. Together I wonder if anyone else has a different grip when they're playing games and maybe not have noticed?

    • I've come to this exact realisation, mainly due to discovering this youtube channel. In 'Windows stuff' I have a palm grip and I always thought I had palm grip (thus buying mice like Intellimouse Pro) but I am actually using the exact parameters that Zy is using ( ... also playing Quake for 17 odd years.. coincidence?). So I am thinkin the Superlight might work better for me.

  • this is crazy, actually looking into the mz1, - anchored, angled, hybrid palm, relaxed fingertip, wheel tips, seperated. Question though, know older video sorry haha. for thumb placement, what if i got used to playing heavy crouch spam games, and go to bind is m4? or fwd side button, and thumb placement is more up then resting on the bottom. Is that an issue/ any mice i guess for that lol

  • Here is my grip style: 1. Anchored 2. Straight 3. Only the same part as you showed touched the top of the mouse. The base of the fingers 4. Relaxed Fingertip 5. Wheel Tips Or Front 6. Separated Hand is 19.5 by 10cm Was using G102 for years. Awesome shape. Past 2 months tried Viper mini, but it was too narrow for me. Then tried Orochi V2. The back gets narrow too fast and my separated pinky was not feeling ok it was actually touching the mouse with my nail on the pinky. Then tried GPX superlight and it fitted like a glove. I did not expected that. Its still a big bigger for me I feel. A GPX Superlight mini of about 90% of the GPX would be ideal I feel. The feel on the scroll wheel is way better, though the press force is a bit higher than I wanted. My gridshot score in AimLab increased pretty much from the start. Was doing 51k with the mini. 53 with g102 and Orochi and went to 57 with the GPX. I know those are noob scores, but I could see a difference straight away.

  • Anchored Straight Hybrid-Palm Front Relaxed-Fingertip Separated Still looking for the perfect mouse. I currently use a Basilisk Ultimate for most games/general use, and a G600 for Warframe and any MMO's I might play. Thinking of trying the Steelseries Aerox 9 to see if it can take the place of both of those mice.

  • What do you think of the egg shaped mice ZY? Not the regular ones, something like A4tech 620D. I've tried a few mice and non of them feels correct for me except for the above mentioned one. I've viper mini, Zowie S2 and g102 and I don't like the fact most mice is wide/fat at the back or wide in general. My grip and hand size is similar to yours but I like to squeeze my palm not keep it wide/round.

  • I love how detailed this is! The fourth point is kinda hard to determine for my style. A lot of my palm is in contact with the mouse, and I use the 1-2-2 grip, but still my middle finger is arched in a relaxed position, while my index is flat. So I guess my style would be: 1. Anchored 2. Angled 3. Palm or hybrid palm 4. ? (Only my middle finger is arched, so I guess this would be a palm/claw hybrid?) 5. Front tip 6. Separated I just bought your mouse, because I had to test the very specific shape to my grip. Unfortunately it didn't fit my style, but I was wondering if you would consider putting out a guide on how to find the perfect shape, using clay? In any case, thank you for deep diving into aiming. It is my passion, and you help pave the way to perfection.

  • I use the same type of grip as you. My hand is a similar size as yours (i took the measurements a year a go so i dont remember), so that might have something to do with it... I do change my grip a bit depending on the type of shooter and/or weapon I use though... But the grip you use is what feels the most natural for me in most situations. I'd say for snipers and very high recoil weapons i use a bit more finger movement mixed with the hybrid palm grip, and for situations that require faster reaction time and not as much "player tracking", I use a bit more of a claw grip (for example, for games like Rainbow Six Siege where reaction time is super important and there is less tracking going on because of how slow characters are and how little it takes for them to die).

  • 1 Anchored 2 Slightly angled, but by design as I have a G203 and I hate the slopes on the side and it helps my fingers not squish under the mouse 3 Hybrid palm 4 Separated, but the one weird thing I do is that i have my pinky completely folded into my palm and bracing the side of the mouse, both for the same reason as 2 and because I do the same thing with hybrid palm where i brace the right side of the mouse hard with the edge of my hand. 5 Sort of wheel tips my but my middle finger is generally straight like palm grip and my index curled like a crunched up claw grip 6 Separated

  • My grip is anchored, with the mouse angled so I have more thumb control of the mouse. I'm a hybrid palm and my grip is more of a relaxed claw/relaxed fingertip. My fingers land on tthe mouse at the wheel and depending on the mouse I switch between together and separated. For example, my glorious Model O- is very small so the separated fingers personally feel uncomfortable, however on the G PRO Wireless there's much more room on the mouse so I my fingers are seperated.

  • My grip is a little bit "anchored" but it's really only the Pisoform Bone and the right side of my palm a bit. It's barely touching so I can lift it up to flick and anchor it more when seeking precise micro corrections, similar effect to how claw is used, but with a bit less control all around the mouse, a little bit of bias towards controlling from the pisiform so I guess I want to call that*: 1. hybrid anchored* 2. angled 3. hybrid palm 4. relaxed fingertip 5. front tips 6. 1-2-2 together (due to old injury I can't use my pinky fully independently, I keep it tucked beneath my ring finger and kinda anchored to it, but I often drop the tip to the mousepad for control along with the tip of my ring finger. Especially when I lift my pisiform bone up for flicks, as that pushes both tips lower and helps with precision & stopping power)

  • Anchored, straight, palm, relaxed fingertip, wheel tips, and separated. Was never really care about mouse I got, I use whatever I had on hand, including the one I'm currently using, Logitech G102, got it as a freebie together with my laptop. Got double clicking issue after more than 5 years. Just replace the switch yesterday and it's as good as new. At first I thought this mouse would be too big for my puny hand, but turns out it fits me well.

    • If you using your palm then you are not using fingertip or claw grip because in these grips either your palm don't touch mouse hump or slightly touch it with only a bit of palm I think you are using palm grip but for g102 small size u said it fits you well so either your hand very small or you using claw palm grip
