In this episode, Kristen and Michael take you through the our entire year of 2023 and all of the projects we DIYed to make our airbnb the best it can be. From getting a hot tub at our short term rental to building a patio cover by hand and even an epic circular stargazing platform, this year was full of projects.
We are so excited to ring in 2024 with this video and bring you tons of amazing videos moving into this new year.

Thanks for joining us as we navigate through the trials and triumphs of our DIY adventures and a big thank you for all of the support always... we appreciate YOU!
New to our channel? Well, hi there! We're Kristen and Michael, a couple embarking on a wild adventure of transforming our dream desert home into a short-term rental biz!
As crazy as it sounds, we decided to ditch our beloved Los Angeles (which we called home for 7 years) and chase our wildest dreams of owning a piece of land in California. And guess what? We did it! We finally bought our desert house in the summer of 2021, and we've been DIY-ing our hearts out ever since!
We're talking about an (almost) complete renovation, from top to bottom! But that's not all! We're also building our business from scratch, with the goal of sharing our little oasis with our family, friends, and even strangers from all over the world.
So come on and join us on this crazy ride! We promise it'll be full of laughs, tears, and lots of DIY fails (and wins!). Welcome to our channel!

  • Hello from Antigua. I have an Airbnb here and just love watching you guys for encouragement! Love the creativity, and I can't wait for the completion of your super secret fun project! I am also just making major and minor improvements in between guests, so I understand the challenge. Keep up the good work, and thanks for being an inspiration to others (even those of us outside of the US).

  • Over xmas break I've been binge rewatching your content from the beginning, very inspirational! Although there's not much we can do to work on the glamp site in NY winter, we are thinking of renovating the bathroom in our house:)this would be a complete gutting, tear down a wall to expand, thanks for all the content and Happy New Year! I hope 2024 is the best yet!

  • Once again!! Love your videos!!! Our Airbnb, A Shore Thing - Long Beach is still going strong. I do see a slow down, I’m usually booked out a good 3 months. Now it’s just 1 1/2 months. Still over 80% bookings. Yep competition is tough right now. Far more good competitors. We recently painted our front deck with granite grip from Home Depot. Love it! Cost was $1,000 and took 3 days of us diy painting the whole thing.

  • I think with 5 acres you guys could build a home or an ADU structure and have everything in one location . I had a contractor friend build a 400 sq ft ADU in lake Arrowhead and people love it . Small but perfect for singles and couples . Easy to clean. California cannot prevent you from building them and they are supposed to fast track them according to recent codes , however you may need a separate septic system ? You can place a cool looking fence between the homes Great for housekeepers and easy for me All repairs on same property You guys have awesome attitudes and appear honest unlike many video blogs

  • I have a AIRB&B in Peeples Valley Arizona. I watched several content of youtubers, and you both are my favorite. I look forward to seeing your journey. I don't know why, but I felt I needed to protect myself and my guests. I bought an info red spy camera detector. I haven't used it yet. I have had guests. I would like to know your thoughts on this issue if you have had any thoughts at all? I saw the KZhead video where the guests had complained about a unmentionable and claimed it wasn't them. I thought about this for a long time, and this kind of person could set up an ugly situation for you and other guests. I will keep you posted if there are any issues or results on my find.....

  • Have you gotten any attitude from the locals? It seems like a lot of people talk about how much they hate people doing the short term rental thing in Joshua tree, but I am curious if you've actually experienced any of it?

    • I mean yes, that does exist. One thing we learned pretty quickly is that the way you dress makes you stand out, we used to dress in a lot of black and white and people that live out there don’t. So we like to try and blend in and not act like a tourist, that helps a lot. Also, the people out there are actually really nice, just don’t say where you’re from and treat them with respect and it gets reciprocated.

    • @@kristenandmichael that's good to know, thanks! I'm selling my house (Ojai) and cashing out my equity and I'm going to move down there and should be able to almost pay cash for a decent home. I want to be a good neighbor and member of the community and I will live there full-time.

    • @@user-ke9yk5qp3uoh wow! We love Ojai too. That’s awesome you’re able to use the equity to pay for your new home. There are so many cool people in the area and with every area there are also some not so cool. You’re going to love it!

    • @@kristenandmichael that is super encouraging, thank you so much! I can't stay in Ojai because my mortgage payment is $3500 per month and I want to retire in about six years and I will be nowhere close to having paid off my mortgage! If I move down there I will have a mortgage of less than $100,000. And I have a super good job working from home and I love the desert. Have fun you guys! Take care!

  • Kristen and Michael, as I mentioned previously, I used your host referral link to create my listing. I met all the criteria but never received the $40. I contacted Airbnb, and they said there was an issue with the link, but you would have to contact them. On one of your previous videos, I posted the message they sent me for you.
