  • Another great tip I find useful: make known criminals and strong hooks your vassals if you need to exert control. The ability to imprison at will/blackmail is very powerful to quell any discontent.

It was a fun time but your videos are so bingeworthy and well structured that I binged through your entire tutorial series and it really helped me elevate my gameplay and roleplay fun! Thanks for the great tips! A lot I knew about but a lot of stats and more hidden options escaped me at first glance so there's something to learn in every "lesson"

  • Touching on point 3 "Keeping vassals happy": For any new players who feel themselves constantly at odds with their vassals and never seem to be able to keep them happy, especially upon succession, remember the Machiavellian saying "It is better to be feared, than to be loved." One neat little trick that you can employ if your ruler just died and your vassals hate their new liege, is to execute a bunch of your lowborn prisoners. Because they are not your vassals, you won't incur a tyranny hit, and you can build up a dreadful reputation early on, which will dissuade most of your vassals from forming or joining factions. Now of course, if you like to role play, it might not be ideal to have every single one of your rulers be a mass murdering maniac, but it will help you in the beginning when you try to understand the game and can't be bothered with disloyal vassals.

    • Now this strategy has been beaten hard with the nerf-stick. It only works if you somehow manage to imprison a bunch of titled characters, which could prove problematic.

  • One mistake I made in my very first game that isn’t quite covered here is having a vassal with a Kingship claim that they are capable of achieving on their own. When playing as Wales I had seized Mercia, leaving England weak, but without realising I had let somebody with a claim on the English crown become Duke. They eventually went to war on their own and won, becoming King of England, removing Mercia from my realm. Lesson learnt.

    • @@PartyElite So I just started playing this game. I've learned quite a lot over the past few days. If I assign a vassal with 11 stewardship. Will it help with the amount of taxes they're able to give me? Also, if I arrange a marriage with a woman who has high stewardship. Will she help my vassal with taxes, similar to how my duchess helps me with my domain or are there other ways to increase tax flow,other than raising the base tax? Pretty much i want to raise the average tax. Instead 0.3 for a average tax. Id like to have a 0.4 or 0.5. I guess their opinion of course changes this. Depends on certain things. However, I feel as though increasing their stewardship is better overall if possible. Edit: nevermind. You covered my question at the end of the video. Thanks very much.

    • I always try to start at the bottom. One way of doing it is to ask the Pope for a claim on your liege's duchy. He will grant one if you've got the right skills (virtues like Temperance etc) and he likes you. Once you have a claim you can start a faction for it and deliver an ultimatum. I got my liege's duchy with no bloodshed - he just conceded to my faction's demand even though I was the only member of the faction. You can do this on the next liege title (king). This time he refused my demand and we had a war but I didn't have to spend any fame or whatever it's called to start it as he started it.

  • Extremely well done, this is one of the recent headaches along with succession.....Goddamnit succession pisses me off. BUT! Here's what's still hairpullingly frustrating! HOW do you prioritize and pick, and HOW do you min-max a vassal's efficiency? Let me elaborate... You want your vassals to be strong because that makes you strong right? You want them to afford to build and win their own wars because it benefits you, right? So let's use 2 examples. Example: You're a king, you occupy a duchy through war, let's say the duchy is comprised of 3 counties. How do you minmax? Solution 1: You give the duchy AND all counties to the same person? Benefits: Only 1 guy to keep happy, his titles have cohesion which means his income and levies max out and so do yours as a result. He gets to conquer on his own and grow you through those actions. Negatives: He dies. His son won't have the +180 opinion he had for giving him all the land. Now his son can be hard to please and ruin you. Solution 2: You give 2 counties to Adam and 2 Counties + the Duchy to Joe. Now you have 2 people to keep happy (and 2 sons who also lose the +opinion their fathers had from granting), but they have less power. Them having less power means they might not be able to afford building or warring on your behalf. Also, Adam is a vassal of Joe, so they would still rise against you together (or not?) Solution 3: You split 3 counties on 3 people and give the 4th + duchy to a 4th person. Now they're inredibly divided and easy to deal with if they rebel (they rebel together or no?) The problem with solution 3, is that you now have FOUR vassals to please?! Four in just ONE duchy! Or because 3 of them are counties under a duke, do you still ONLY have 1 duke to please since those counties have to please him? And thus are not your problem to keep happy? What about when that duke dies or gets conquered by one of his duchies if he sucks? Will ALL counties in that duchy get "not rightful liege" modifier? Or will my title of KING keep that from happening as long as that duchy is part of that kingdom? All this stuff is a COMPLETE headache to me. How to minmax? Somebody PLEASE give me an elaborate multiple solutions and scenarios reply...

    • @YAÄIZ YILMAZ Also - What is the benefit of having a ONLY duchy title with none of the counties inside in your control? The extra renown, is that the sole purpose to stay with your limit?

      @nickxplore4265@nickxplore42653 жыл бұрын
    • What I personally do, as a King, is to give the duchy to my weakest vassal (to prevent too many powerful vassals challenging you). Ideally this would be a personal friend, a nephew or grandson in the family, or a existing count level vassal that is exceptionally talented. Picking a friend means you have more loyal vassals in the short term. It's a good idea to marry the friend's heir into your family to ensure blood loyalty. Picking a existing family member means your dynasty/house gains more of the power in your realm. Why share the power if you don't have to? Make sure the family member is actually from your house so you can play as them if enough heirs die. If you are the dynasty head, you also get Weak Hooks on your family members. Use these hooks to improve your gains from their feudal contracts. The last option would be to give the duchy to a talented count level vassal. The higher stats will mean your realm gets more out of this vassal. Again like the friend option, this is a short term gain as the heir may be a complete dummy. I prefer to make my family members as my powerful vassals in the realm and that guides all of my internal vassal decisions. The relations boost for family vassals means factions are easier to handle. So if you give the duchy to one of these 3 options, give some of the counties to the new Duke's heir and some to the Duke himself. This gives you a relations boost to both the Duke and his heir. This is more durable a benefit and also synchronizes well with the family member option. If you are a old King, give a new duchy to your heir (son?) and some counties to his heir (grandson?). This keeps it in the line of succession.

      @pspublic13@pspublic133 жыл бұрын
    • That's what's so brilliant about this game. There's not really a "min/max" in the traditional sense. It's all a trade off. Personally, my strategy is to reach Tier 3 crown authority, and then give out duke titles to random, weak individuals. Then, you give the counties in those places to other weak people. BUT, you transfer vassalage of those counts to the duke, which removes the "Desires County of _______" from the Duke, because they just want control over it, not necessarily to own it. Keep this process up with Kingdoms once you achieve Empire rank, and every time you conquer someone, grant vassalage to the nearest duke/King, or create a new title and put a new person in. Playing as the Byzantines, my vassals have conquered more land than I have, because they're organized and powerful, and have no fear starting wars. Only key point about this strategy is to keep the vassals happy, otherwise you're screwed. However, if you transfer vassals to their correct De Jure lords, most vassals will be happy

      @Khomann@Khomann3 жыл бұрын
    • @@Khomann I like the thinking - make strong individuals who expand in your name for you. One part confused me. Why not just give them the duchy and all counties directly? Why give the counties to different weak people only to take them away from them and give them to the duchy owner anyway? Does it give even more happiness bonus to the duchy owner than the regular way? IF so, isn't that at the expense of having a ton of courtiers who USED to own territories at -40 opinion with you? Won't you eventually have nobody to give new territories to that aren't pissed at you from a previous action?

      @nickxplore4265@nickxplore42653 жыл бұрын
    • @@nickxplore4265 You certainly can give them all the counties along with the duchies, but I would advise against this early game, or if your overall realm is small. If the dukes have direct control, they gain a lot more money and a lot more levies because they actually own the land (as opposed to only getting __% of a counties taxes and levies through a feudal contract with their counts). This is fine, and in turn gives them more power to fight wars on your behalf, but it also comes with the risk of them becoming too powerful. A vassal that can overpower you will be more likely to ask for independence, even if they like you. Most of the times, the counties that a Duke owns will slowly be given away by the Duke himself, or splintered during succession anyways. I just like to cut out the middle man and have it pre-split ;) Also it just looks and operates nicer because it becomes a legitimate hierarchy of feudalism.

Having an empire means a lot of land but having 4 people in my dynasty means 4 renown a month. However there is no guarantee that my heirs hold onto the kingdom they inherit. I am confused.

  • 22:00 so true, I restored the danelaw, that's thee mostt stability you can reach in the British map, since no more liberty wars with the england leaders. I had the best character ever, a guy with learning focus but 20 martial and 4 star learning education, his bro was diplo focus around 28, with good martial and 4 star diplo education, they were son #2 and #3 and 1# was a crappy 2 star who I disinherited, so there was no bad choice. but as I grow oldeer, my prowess was 0 and a grandkid who was an amazonian steward, greedy and great at that job, simply challenged me and took the throne with 100% success, I saw 75-25, or 60-40, and I even won against the odds, but this time I had no choice but to give it over. so note to self, a bit of hand to hand is good if you are a king, and easiest way is being a giant amazonian. funny thing I got to play with the diplomat guy too. but it was so meessed up, I had to stop that playthrough. iceland went adamite, thee country broke up multiple times and the holy wars came for us. at least I made a neew religion which was quite good, only it limited some marriages, but introduced a bit of new blood too. in otther playtrough, my sister was a decent marshall with huge prowess, but I got an 'insult contest' and beeat her at that :D

But the claims on Desmond are imilict for the children of the holder. And pressed for the brother of the holder. IDK what it means. I have no claim on Desmond, but was able to declare war on on it due to being majority county holder in the duchy. But still didn't have claim after winning. Which I thought I would get since the tutorial directions seem to suggest to attack it due to having claim on it. However, it only became a vassal under my realm. And the enemy holder escaped my prison, back to holding it again, but as my vassal. Since I had no claim, I couldn't take hold of it myself or grant it to somebody else. Really need help especially with understanding the implicit, pressed, unpressed rules.

    • @@shatteredknight1129 regarding claims, I would check this out - kzhead.info/sun/pNuapLynjGeraoU/bejne.html As for what happened in your war - Claims are just one type of casus belli... One of the many that ends with the newly conquered title belonging to you. What you probably used instead was the casus belli you get access to because you hold the title directly above the targeted county. Because you're the Duke of Munster, the Count of Desmond should serve you - it is rightfully (de jure) part of your Duchy. So the war you declared wasn't to get the title for yourself, but to get the title holder serving under you, as he's supposed to. So when the war was won, he's still the holder of the Count of Desmond, but now he serves you. That's my best guess as to what happened, based on the info I have! I would suggest watching the video I linked above for details about war, and to revoke the title, I'd suggest checking this out - kzhead.info/sun/ocutf8eCjaKAn2w/bejne.html

    • @@PartyElite OK. This makes way more sense. Maybe it's just the tutorial, because it seemed as if majority control of the duchy would give me automatic claim to the title for that county. And do what I want with it. So basically, I'm not going to war to take ownership of the title. It's just to make sure that the dejavu county is fully part of my realm. The videos explain claims a bit, not not that clear. The info is helpful for some of this. I think I was able to figure the claims out. Not completely sure. • So I just started playing this game. Oh ok. You covered my question towards the end of the video. Wow. Thanks 👍

  • One of the things that would be really helpful for myself is to better understand the details of marriage and marrying off your children for advantage without screwing yourself in the process and how to advance your cause if, in a male dominated world, you are blessed with numerous daughters and only a son or two. I want to enjoy my daughters and use them to as much advantage as possible and/or change culture or religion to do so over a few generations. Anyway... the whole how to marry for the success of your dynasty and family success.

  • I was wondering if the AI is capable of sorting out their own rightful liege? Say for example you are an emperor and they are a king and acquire a county. So they assign these new acquisitions properly or do you constantly have to monitor it and sort it for them. These seems like tedious work and lots of issues with opinion hits as you are removing vassals from them and giving them to their correct liege. A disadvantage from Simply trying to keep things the correct way they should have been.

  • Exactly what I needed! Two questions: when giving a title away, how do you know if they will be feudal or republic? Can one ruler have two kingdoms if they are not an Emperor?

    @jordanelbers@jordanelbers3 жыл бұрын
    • A ruler can have two kingdoms at any point, assuming they hold the legal land for those kingdoms. An empire comes in exactly the same way, just with much more land. Duchies, kingdoms, and empires are different ranks in a system that works extremely similarly in each rank.

      @thunderhammer7@thunderhammer73 жыл бұрын
    • @Jordan Elbers A republic is always associated with a City holding. Playing as republic is currently unavailable and you get penalties if you hold a city directly. As thunderhammer7 said, you can have two kingdoms. But you should always be wary of holding multiple titles of your highest rank. If you have a succession law that gives multiple heirs then you will likely fracture your domain. E.g. If you hold two kingdoms, Kingdom A will go to your direct (playable) heir and Kingdom B will go to your brother, who will then be an independent King

    • It's difficult at first and depends if you're playing as a tribal or feudal system. If tribal: go raiding. Recruiting mostly costs prestige rather than money (except for mercenaries). I have a hard time generating a stable income as tribal though so... firs expand, control your vassals, keep them happy and progressively move toward a feudal system with high-ish crown authority. If feudal, well... get a good steward, get a wife with good stewardship, get the stewardship life path (starting with "Tax Man") and make sure to have a great control over your counties (get a good Marshal and make sure he's always increasing control in counties with low control). Getting martial perks to improve your control is also a good idea. With more control you can collect more taxes and that's especially important on your domains. Once you have about 500 gold and are getting about 5 gold per month (just a rule of thumb) AND (very important) you're pretty sure there won't be any war in the next 5-10 years, start developing your settlements (castles and cities) by building stuff that gives you more gold per month. And by that I mean those that are part of your primary title (do not develop any settlement outside of your primary title unless you're far enough in the game, have a good grip over the kingdom and have high partition for succession so you're sure that even non-primary titles will remain under your heir's control).

    • @@Draclord35 thanks, this is what i was mostly going for, but it helps! i started as a tribal county and transitioned to feudal quite quickly. my first run in the ireland tutorial i was building stuff all over my map, for vassals as well. and then i went for the pseudo-democracy system, so my realm kept changing with each new ruler, quite a clusterfuck, but i did manage to become king of ireland (and quickly lose 2 counties to outsiders). was fun for a while until my dynasty kinda hit a brick wall, cause my family kept producing girls... i find all of what you advise harder to do in one life-span, i'm just on the brink of playing as my heir, a sadistic and not very competent man (with bad diplomacy and MINUS faith). let's see how it goes!

  • you can give away titles when over your domain limit to older, unmarried people in your court so titles revert on death. I just did this with one of my knights, and he went from -19 to -100. i dont understand how that could happen... EDIT: in the video you mentioned that vassals will be unhappy when you are over your domain limit. he went from being in my court to being a vassal so that is what happened. cant remember the name of my character, but you start the game in a war for bulgaria. on winning the war, you lose old lands, new lands are renamed to hungary, and you are then 15/5 on domain limit. i didnt know there was such a penalty for being that far over domain limit so i started murder schemes against my unhappy vassals before trying to give away land... oops.

  • "This penalty (vassal's contributions) is much better than the penalties of being over your limit." Not if you have a big enough empire. Just remember, that vassal contribution is to direct vassal. If you're an emperor, you might get .005% of the count's levies or money. Whereas being massively over your domain limit is a flat 90% loss. I'm not sure where it becomes more profitable to rule everything and have no vassals, but it's there. Because there's a massive penalty for both non-direct vassals and being over the domain limit, I always wonder what's the point of expanding beyond your domain limit at all. Especially since the goal of the game is to reach a certain year, and not conquer targets like in similar games to this.

    @edwardcollins8102@edwardcollins81023 жыл бұрын
    • Just jumping in way late to say the goal of the game is about dynasty. You don't lose when you lose your kingdom or empire, you lose when your dynasty loses all land anywhere. Actually, the game directly rewards having multiple dynasty members with INDEPENDENT titles and de-facto punishes having one large empire with all family under one title. Especially early-mid game you'll find greater reward in setting up kingdoms with your family even if they are constantly infighting and going to war. Just set yourself up for alliances with the kingdoms/duchies most at risk from outside claims.
