In this episode of The Ranveer Show, we welcome Milind Deora. He is an Indian politician and former Union Minister of State for Communications & Information Technology and Shipping. He was one of the youngest members of the 15th Lok Sabha and became the MP at the age of 27.
Today, Milind Deora dwelled upon various political topics and explained how governance works. He talks about the reason why he chose politics as a career. He explains his viewpoint on why the government should not interfere in the business segment and talks about his professional life in opposition. He further talks about urban development in India and how the government is working towards it. Moreover, he shares his experience of working with Dr. Manmohan Singh's government.

There was terrible financial crisis in 2008 around the world with collapse of Lehman Brothers in U.S. Indian economy was saved & grew with wisdom from congress team. Thanks to Congress Team since Independence. You can only join congress if you are exceptional in your field & not how many riots you have created in your locality like entrance criteria for BJP.
It's respectful that we survived 2008 recession. It was well said by famous economists around the world that india survived because india was led by politicians it's taken care of by world-class economists
Dr Manmohan Singh was highly respected all around the world for his economic reforms & knowledge. Leaders would ask for his feedback in an international setting. Unfortunately he lacked cunningness which uneducated leaders have in abundance.
Leaders should have that cunningness that you call bcoz if not you will be used as a poster boy for their work, they will point out to you a direction to work with some logic and then you will be working in that direction for their sake thinking that it is for people. The more talented a person is in specific field the higher his job should be but not the leader, Leade's job is to take decisions, tough decisions. They need to choose them based on many principles morality, legality, backlash from public, backstabbing from allies, domain knowledge experts, multi-department insights, etc. So irrespective of his contributions(which are good) but he is a failure a leader. He not only pushed the country as fast as it could be but also failed it in some regards.

@DrArudraBurrabut those were Boom times in World economy everyone was growing. There were 50+ nations with 6% or more GDP growth at that time. Today times have changed 6% growth rate is rare beast these days. Plus that growth at time of Manmohan Singh was highly reliant on investment made through loans which all went NPA and still haunt our banks to this day. All in all you just can't compare two figures from different times. 2000s were the hey day of global economy and nearly all countries did well. Not saying that Modi is doing any miracle though.

@DrArudraBurra don't blindly oppose Modiji Sir. All those policies you mentioned were very needed policies. Yes a PM should dedicate his timing to UCC bills, NRC and CAA too. These policies are needed along with a good economy. Also under Modiji we archived the 2T and 3T mark. And if not Modiji, then who? Now, it's not Manmohan Ji who is in opposition, but Rahul Gandhi. It'll be only a madman who thinks that electing a guy with absolute 0 political experience will be of good to the country. Whereas Modiji is the ex-CM of Gujarat, which is among the richest states of India in terms of GDP per capita as per 2021-22 data of PIB. So Modi is bad, Rahul is worse. Remember, Rahul is the same guy who told that RSS is more dangerous to India than Lashkar e taiba. The same organization which has given us the likes of Atal Vajpayee, Nitin gadkari. And 1 more thing Sir, you've mentioned in one of your comments that Manmohan ji achieved growth rate of 10% during 2008, world Bank data clearly shows india's growth rate at that time was 3.1%. Infact from 2004-14 (Manmohan reign) the highest we hit was 8.5 (2010), which js nowhere close to 10%. Modiji highest is 9.1 in 2021, the very year after Covid 19 and Modiji will be still counting if he wins 2024, whereas Manmohan ji has retired from politics. So if God wishes, he and our country might even end up hitting double digit growth, a 1st in the history of indian economy. The highest we've hit till now was 9.6 back in '88 All these figures are from world Bank official website. Also from 2010-14 the avg growth rate was not 8% but infact, 6.6% which is slightly less than the 6.8% avg growth rate under 2014-19. And the sample size should be equal so it should be 2014-18, avg growth rate in that period being 7.4%, well above 6.6%. All you figures are very very misleading and straight-up incorrect. It was sometime in the early 90s, I remember when I was a kid and I wanted to watch something on TV . I switched it on and there was Dr Manmohan Singh giving a looong speech with papers in his hands on the parliament. I was getting irritated cause there was only doordarshan at that time and some cartoon was supposed to be on. But after that day I literally saw changes everywhere. New phones, branded clothes, imported cars etc. The entire country changed after that speech.
People who say he was a terrible PM has no idea what he had done in his first five years. 100 days guranteed employment was a life saving policy for crores. The Nuclear deal with U. S and breaking the ice with west after sanctions from the U. S was not easy. In evey indicator the growth of India during first five years were extremely high. Bcoz it was a coalition government he has to sacrifice a lot.

Excellent?!!! Look, I copy paste the message which I already have written weeks ago. Before becoming FM, he was RBI governor, also CHIEF ECONOMIC ADVISOR to Indira Gandhi from 1972 to 76, inflation was at peak 29%, GDP growth rate was just 1%, license Raj system etc. He always held top positions from 1970s to 1991, in 20 years that dude never advised govts to open up the economy. His economic advise bankrupted India & IMF forced to implement some reforms but dude got credit.
Shri. PV Narsimha Rao and Shri. Manmohan is the best combo, that got us the lion share of what we have and where we are today. Even the Congress party wasn't really with them. If only we had such visionary leaders.
Manmohan Singh did not brought reforms, it was IMF forced india to do reforms as India was on verge of Bankruptcy, it was PVN Rao going against the party for bringing liberalisation.

The irony is that people don't mention the fact that the early 90's economic reforms in India was in a way forced on its citizens and Congress due to lack foreign reserves and also the world bank not wanting to bail out the country. It was a reform, yes, but it was taken as the last step due to the government's economic failures in the years preceding the reforms.

Crap. It was the IMF who was pressured to open the Indian Market and PM Narasimharao was the one who did it. And Credit goes to..Who ? Yes Of course he did deserve credit for his role but not the entire credit as is given ignorantly. With such a high stature of knowledge and Position as PM he couldn't control the Inflation nor could he control devaluation of Rupee against Dollars. I don't even need to defend the incumbent government because basic Statistics proves that Inflation is in due Check and GDP is far better in growth than under Economist PM. All you need is Google out and carry out basic Comparative analysis of Proportional Calculation.
This is a common trick of Congressis. Make up stuff to warp. I remember that era, 1991 - 93. We were a BJP family and yet my elders appreciated the Rao-Manmohan economic policies. But Rao was key. He set the direction, created the political space. Mamohan would constantly quit or threaten to quit at every hint of difficulty or heat from the opposition. This one time, Rao had to call Atal ji and have him talk to Manmohan out of resignation. Atal ji did. Convinced Manmohan that Opposition was simply doing its job, he should ignore and get on with revival of the Indian economy and that he had tacit support. It was this joint effort that lead to successful reforms. But today, the Congis twist that picture. This same Manmohan, later, became a rubber stamp in the hands of foreign forces.

1991 reform decision were done because reserves was record low and IMF put those conditions on us to get help from them. Reforms were not intentional but had to be done to fulfill IMF conditions

Those reforms were inevitable. He had no choice than making those reforms and in fact, IMF forced us to soend the money the way they want. Remember, china did it because it realised that globalization is the only way to development of the country and they did it 2 decades earlier than us. It took almost bankruptcy for us to bring those reforms. And even after bringing those reforms our infrastructure remained outdated. So it didn't had that much effect on our economy or progress. I respect him as a politician and economist so much, but there is no way we should called that reforms great. We could have realise that without worst financial situation and could have worked hard on infrastructure.
Well, dont forget Manmohan Singh was the same guy who was chief economic advisor during the horrible 70s economy. Also, Dr Singh was pushed into making these reforms due to world bank pressure.

Because by then he was not an economist any more but a dummy PM who said what his Madam asked him to. He was demeaned so many times and yet he gave in it to it. It was belittling the post of the PM of India. History will thank him for the reforms but not forgive his decade as PM where every sphere the country was pulled down.

Sorry to say if it was his contributions to the economy during 1991-1992 crisis, then why was India was not super successful economically during his 10 yr tenure as PM? It was PV Narasimha Rao's vision and direction that led MMS propose whatever he did. It was PVNR who faced tbe wrath of all opposition parties including nehru family. Against all odds inside and outside his party, PVNR bravely went ahead with the economic reforms and we all are enjoying its fruits now.

To say India was not economically successful during Manmohan Singh tenure would be totally wrong and borderline immature. India was still growing at 8-9% at that time and his tenure includes 2008 financial crisis. Additionally, in 2015 NDA govt changed the way GDP number was calculated to give a rosy inflated figure. Be it number of people pulled out of poverty, number of tractor sales (indicates farmers economic condition), domestic two-wheeler and car sales, consumption of finished steel (indicates industrial economic condition) and so on. Manmohan Singhs tenure had more growth in 11 out 15 indicators compared to Modi's tenure. No doubt our current economic future looks promising and many good things have been done by NDA govt as well, but it would be immature to say India wasn't economically successful during Manmohan Singh's tenure. He was just about less marketing and publicity which current govt does a lot.

He didn't introduced economic reforms, he just implemented the SAP outlaid and prepared by IMF. If he had known anything about economic reforms he wouldn't have done it just before a week earlier of last pennies left in our forex reserve. He doesn't deserve any credit of LPG except the part where he implemented the policy.

Dr Manmohan Singh was forced to bring reforms by IMF and World bank when he and then PM went to borrow as they had put India in fragile state. It wasnt his brainchild or any bold decision. He was compelled. So no need to give him credit. And by the time his tenure as PM ended he brought India to same state. We were the fragile five countries

Country never forget his contribution of economic reforms during 1991 and locking harasath mehta scam. He did extremely well as an economist. On the other side, he didn't handle the situation very effectively on 2G spectrum case, National Herald, and uncontrolled terrorist attack on india. We need to go issue based approach. Most importantly, economic reforms done because he got a full support from Mr. Narasima rao (Bharath Ratna)
