wow. i was sceptical of the title of this video. You will REALY understand VOR's after watching this. Thank you!!!
I appreciate that! I don’t believe VORs are explained correctly and this video was my attempt to change that!
Thank you so much for simplifying this topic…
VOR saved my bacon on my private cross country in 1975. I was not listening or it just didn’t sink in when the flight weather station briefer told me my destination airport was two miles visibility with fog. That was the second leg on the trip. I blissfully took off and when I got near my destination I couldn’t find the airport cause of the fog. I took radials off of two VORs and when they crossed figured out where I was and where the airport was. Finally found it.
Great story. Thanks for sharing
This was a fantastic lesson. I really liked how you put the audience “in the cockpit .” I never really understood VORs that well until now.
Thanks Brian! I really appreciate the feedback. I’m so glad it helped you
@@FreePilotTraining i don't need VOR, I'm not a pilot but I'm interested in this and I've played right SIM some years ago. I never understood those maps but now I do! This video is great. The kindly thing I wasn't 100% clear on was if I was left or right of the angle line for to make a correction. So if I was flying To/through and the line was left of center, the aircraft is the center, so do I get to get on the line by turning towards the line, or do I turn the aircraft to make the line come to me which would be a right turn? I'm guessing I'd turn left to move the aircraft over the line that's off to the left to bring it back to the center? Great video. Well done. I'm sure these videos will bring you lots of students.
@@Google_Does_Evil_Now thanks! Yes, as long as your heading is close to the bearing you have selected, you would turn towards the line
During my flight training days, my instructor had me verify that I tuned to the proper VOR by listening to the audio Morse Code identifier and then matching the sound to the printed Morse Code elements on the chart. I told her that I confirmed it by ear already. She didn't believe me. I then informed her that I held an Amateur Extra Class Ham Radio license from the 80s, whereby I was required to demonstrate my ability to receive Morse Code at 20 WPM by ear and that I had my Ham license in my pocket if she needed proof. She just said "Oh...ok, then." Hehehe.
😂 that’s pretty funny
Dot dot dot dash dash dash dot dot dot dash dash dash....
Samuel Morse created his code really fast. Let’s just say he did so in a dash.
Great story!
Awesome!!! I love it.
Thank you! My instructor told me it was his first time seeing a student learning VOR that fast! The best VOR video!!!
That’s super cool! Thanks for the comment!
This has helped so much, thank you! Finally someone who doesn't lie about the title
Awesome! You’re welcome!
Thank you so much for this! In just a few minutes you turned this in to a VERY digestible concept!
Awesome! You’re welcome! Thanks for watching!
Thank you very much for making training videos. They are succinct, engaging, and provide clarity over questions I have after reading the PHAK and other resources. This is a great video on VORs and navigation!
Thank you! I’m so glad these are helping!
Wow, I feel much more educated about VOR's now. I really struggled to understand them completely in one of the online schools, this is done VERY well! Thank you!
Thank you! I’m so glad this video helped you!
You're helping me get through school Bubba. Thank you for your service both in and outside the military.
You’re welcome! I appreciate the comment!

Thank you guys so much for this video. Easy to understand and this was something that has always confused me in the past.
Awesome! You’re welcome
Excellent tutorial! Great to see actual cabin footage along with the diagrams and charts. I've subscribed!
Thank you! I appreciate that! I’ll see you around!
Looking to start ground school pretty soon, and I just found your channel and its amazing. Thank you!
Thank you so much! Happy to do it!
Getting back to flying after about 25 years. Most of my ground school was 50 years ago. These videos are a nice little refresher.
Awesome! Thank you!
Not much changed, same planes from the 70's. American purchasing power nosedived since then.
This was great. You make things very easy to understand!
Thanks for the feedback! You’re welcome!
wow. I was lost until about half way in and then it all suddenly clicked and it makes total sense. great job making it easy to understand.
Awesome! So glad this helped!
Great video with easily digestible information. I've watched probably 15 different videos on this subject, and here I was looking for yet another one when I stumbled upon this. You were clear, had good examples, and did a great job explaining it in practice in the aircraft. I don't think I will be looking for anymore videos about it; instead I will just come back to this one. Thank you for this.
Awesome! Thank you so much for the comment! I’m so glad you found this useful!
Ive wondered about these VORs for a while, and you taught it perfectly as I already have nav training from the military, this was very easy to understand in under 15 min.
Awesome! Thanks for the comment
Man this teaching works really good for me! Im really new to aviation, ty so much and keep em coming! // swedish aviation noob 😂🙌
I love hearing that 🙌🏻 you’re welcome!
I have been struggling to understand these things all week and this is the first video I've found that actually covered the to/from aspect inna way that helped me to understand! Thank you!!!
Awesome! You’re welcome!
The best VOR video out there on KZhead! Thanks!
Thanks!
I greatly appreciate this! With nights and instruments all that’s left in my list before check ride; this is probably going to be my main form of navigation since landmarks around this part of the country are pretty scarce even during the day.
You’re welcome! Yes, they can be very handy for navigating in areas like that! Glad this was helpful!
Yes, Yes, and we are over a super populated area and many structures look the same. Needing the VOR's to help me out. Not wanting to get lost up there.
This was awesome. I loved this video. My son wants to be a pilot, and I’m learning some of the fundamentals to help him out. As a software engineer I totally geek out on this stuff. Brilliant explanation.
Thanks Pete! I appreciate that!
The Best VOR video so far, so confused with the FROM and TO before.
Thank you so much!
Easily the best VOR video out there in youtube. Thank you!
Thank you! That means a lot
You did a fine job explaining VORs. Thank you.

Wow. Your lecture actually worked. Now I understand everything about it!! Thank you very much!
Awesome! You’re welcome!
You are a literal life saver! Your details and visuals in your explanations helps so much! Much better than my online ground school. You should make a free instrument ground school playlist.
Thanks! I appreciate that! I have plans to start working on instrument stuff. I’ve got a few more PPL videos to wrap up first though
Absolute best pilot instructional videos on the internet. Nailed it again. Thank you.
Thanks Garrett! That means a lot

Thanks Kyle! I really appreciate that!
This is the best explanation I've ever seen on this topic. 😀 Great Work !!!!
Thanks Patrick! I appreciate that
Thank you for dragging me out of the depths of Kings school and making this understandable
Lol. King schools is good, but I think they leave out a lot of important information
Brilliant1 Your use of the word and description of bearing versus heading made things more understandable. I'm going to watch this video several more times for it all to sink in:)
Thanks Greg! I appreciate that
Amazing! I’ve struggled with this as a written test question. Now I have clarity & an appreciation for Nav equipment( I can’t wait to get at …equipped with this knowledge nugget). Thank you. Yes - and demo'ing in the cockpit + used with ForeFlight = a whole universe level higher! 😊🎉
Thank you so much! Glad this video helped!
One of the best, simplest explanations that I have seen.
Thanks!
Excellent explanation!! THIS is the way to explain this subject properly!!

Awesome! You’re welcome!
Dude I literally had never heard of a VOR before clicking on this video but you made me understand what it is and how to follow a course. Genuinely well done!

You're right; this explains VORs WAY better than anything else I've seen or studied! Thanks!! "To go to the station, you must go through the station" ... wow!!
Thank you so much!
@@FreePilotTraining sent the link to my CFI.
At first i was incredibly confused but seeing you use the VOR in real time helped massively. Thank you 😊
Awesome! I’m glad it did! Thanks for the comment!

Thank you for taking the time to put this great tutorial!
You’re welcome!
Thanks!! This is a great video that explained the concept really well!
Thank you!
Ive already passed my written and am studying for my oral and checkride currently, sadly I've been flying for 4 maybe even 5 years (rough time training every single CFI I've ever had would take me to a certain stage then the new CFI would restart me from 0) and still no ppl but this lesson helped me a ton! over all of this time I still don't really know how to use VORs and now I feel like I definitely have a much better grasp! I've always just used the CDI as a landing counter hahahahahaha
😂 too funny! Thank you so much! And thanks for the comment!
Thank you for making this video! Very informative.
You’re welcome! Thanks for watching
Your presentation is on point. Well done, man!
Thank you!
Excellent. Learned a lot. Nice teaching style as well. Going back to start at Lesson #1.
Thank you! I appreciate that! I need to remake the first 5-6 lessons, but if you can get through those, I think you’ll enjoy the rest.
Thanks a lot for your generous explanation!
You’re welcome!
This is an outstanding explanation! Thank you very much!!!
You’re welcome! Thanks for watching!
Awesome job with the explanation and illustrations of using a VOR....!!!
Thanks! I appreciate that!
This is awesome for student pilots. Free ground instruction. Wish I had something like this back in the day. Back then it’s figure it out on your own by the book, talk to a more experienced pilot, buy a training video, or pay for ground instruction.
Thank you! Yeah, I started making these because I told my students that there must be ground course videos they can watch on KZhead, but there wasn’t anything complete
wow - i have always found this a bit tricky in patches. The first 10 minutes ironed out everything in my head. Good video - Thanks!
You’re welcome! Thank you so much for watching!
Thank you SO much for helping me comprehend this.
You’re welcome!
Thanks mang. Best flick on VORs I’ve seen so far.
Thank you so much! Means a lot!
Amazing video to understand VOR .Thank you😊❤❤
You’re welcome! Thanks for watching
great video. Packed with info. I spent a lot of time rewinding and replaying.
Thanks! I’m glad you found it helpful!
Studying for my written test and can check VOR off the list after this video. Thanks for the effort you put into this tutorial.
Awesome! So glad I could help! You’re welcome!
Same here. Best wishes from Germany
Really appreciate this. I have one hour training from 25 years ago. I am considering (preparing actually) to start back up. Over the years I played with MS Flight Sim and could *never* understand what was happening...so I tossed my hands in the air and just flew by the seat of my pants!
No problem! Thanks for watching!
You sir, are a blessing to this world 😅😊
Thanks!
Very well explained! Congrats!
Thank you!
Wow! You make it easier to sip information from the FFA knowledge firehose. Thanks,
Awesome! No problem! So glad I could help!
I learned how to use the VOR and ILS from one of the OLD versions of MS Flight Sim's instruction books. It came with the game back when games were bought off shelves in boxes. The book had it explained incredibly well with illustrations that made it obvious. Hop into the game and sure enough, it all worked and made sense. It made is so simple when I took real flying lessons.
When I was getting my PPL, the school had a red bird that I could use any time I wanted without cost and I primarily used it to figure out the VORs. Simulators are so nice for that type of stuff
This was so helpful after being so desperate to understand VORs! Thank you for taking the time to put this together!!!
You’re welcome! Thanks for watching!
Great explanation - many thanks!
No problem! Thanks for watching!
by far the best video to understand VOR
Thanks Max!
This is worth every penny and minute👌🏽
😆 thank you so much!
You’re my saviour thank you 😊
You’re welcome!
Badass training my head was hurting from class today but now I got it
Awesome! I accomplished my mission!
I am doing my online ground school rn and vor’s massively confused me but I think I understand them now thank you!
Awesome. You’re welcome!
Your video is one of the better, and more understandable, videos that explain the basics of how to use a VOR in the real world. When you were talking about how to identify a VOR station you mentioned that a pilot can “turn the sound on”. Actually, you would need to turn the squelch “off” and then turn the volume up enough to be able to hear the Morse code identifier. It is worth mentioning that if turn the squelch off and you don’t hear anything, assuming that the volume is turned up enough to hear it, that means that the station is unusable, possibly for maintenance reasons or the station is out-of-service at that time.
Thank you so much! And that’s a great point on the squelch. I didn’t even think to mention that
Wow, this is definitely the best VOR Tutorial that I have seen yet. You just taught me something that I don't think has been explicitly explained on other VOR videos which is your clear explanation of Bearing vs Heading and To Fly To a VOR you must Fly Through that VOR to a radial on the opposite side of that VOR. Yes, I admit that that I have been ignorant.
Thank you so much! I think that’s important in order to fully understand them. You also have to understand bearing from the station Vs bearing to the station
The Darn VOR has been quite the obstacle to overcome. Great explanation!
Thanks!
Believe me when I say I have watched tons of vor utube videos. This by far is theee best for explaining it. I watched and hit liked on all of them. Wish I lived closer. I'd choose you as my instructor.
Thank you so much! I spent a lot of time on this video because I know how confusing it is, and I don’t think a lot of people explain it correctly so I thought I’d try my hand at it
Wow i understand vor now very helpful video thank you
You’re welcome! Thanks for watching
It just clicked....what a great tutorial....thank you!!!
You’re welcome! Thanks for letting me know it helped you!
