Dear friends and followers welcome back to my channel. Today's video is very much addressed to my flight students, as we'll be looking at the question, what is a VOR, how does it work and what a VOR has to do with a Lighthouse?
VOR stands for VHF omnidirectional range. I know I haven't made it any better. VHF stands for very high frequency, which makes a VOR only a short-range radio navigation system, so in line of sight, VOR`s are receivable from 25 NM up to 140 NM useable radius.
Line of sight meaning, if there's a mountain between you and the VOR, you will not receive a reliable signal even though you are within the station's range.
Omnidirectional comes from the Latin word omni which means, all or every direction, meaning the VOR sends out 360 lines, let's call them lines for now, which can be picked up by a VOR receiver. In today's video will use a CDI, Course Deviation Indicator with an OBS a Omni bearing selector which is very common in your standard Cessnas, Pipers etc.
Now a common question by the FAA. Are VOR's aligned towards true north or magnetic north? Magnetic north, as you can clearly see on the compass rose around the VOR. If a VOR would point to True north it would always point in the same direction on the chart, as standard charts are oriented towards true north.
But if you compare the Hay River VOR in Northern Canada with a magnetic variation of 16 degrees and Ottersberg VOR with 3 degrees you know VORs are aligned towards magnetic north.
But actually, the answer is both, because some of the VORs in the far north of Canada are aligned with true north, but that's a whole video right there about that topic!
See more in the video!
Thank you very much for your time! I hope you enjoy this video!
Wishing you all the best!
Your "Captain" Joe
BIG THANK to the DFS for their permission allowing to fly with my drone over their VORs ! Highly appreciated!

Preparing for my instrument exam. This is one of the best VOR navigation explanations I’ve ever seen. Thanks CJ! ✈️ 🇨🇦
You just gotta love this bloke. Thanks for explaining it, I had a generel sense of what the VOR is, but now I think I truly understand it.
Thank you for being such an inspiring person I'm just gonna start studying to be a pilot at a university and thanks to you I already know a lot of basics!
I'm a student at the KLM flight academy. I didn't understand the difference between the non-directional beacon and the VHF omnidireactional range. Then I found this video. Thanks for the good explanation! Keep up the good work :)
Hi Capt. Joe. You explained VOR better in 10 min, than my avionics (repair) instructor did in 8 hr. of classroom time. Cheers!
Thanks for such an in depth informational video there are not many pilots on KZhead Im just glad you do what you do Thanks for the video captain 👋
So nice of you to release a video after so long.... hope it wasnt too much of trouble........ 😬🤟🏻
Finally, happy to see an upload from you.
I’ve been in aviation (ATC & pilot) to close for 30yrs, your explanation of the VOR was so spot on and easy to understand. EXCELLENT JOB!!!
Other than the fact it's completely wrong. The lighthouse analogy doesn't really correspond to what is going on and there aren't 360 radials, it's a continuous angle all the way round
Good to see you back. Another great video with fantastic presentation skills. Now I properly understand VORs. Thanks!

What's that? Could it be!? YES! IT'S 'CAPTAIN' JOE!!! Thanks for explaining this, my local airport has one pretty close to it and I've been wondering what it is. Joe, what are your thoughts on Boom's Overture? D'you reckon it's possible to reach supersonic speeds without reheat technology? Would Overture have to go into a shallow dive? How would turbofans cope with mach 2 flight? What about the stress on the engines? How hard the engines work after achieving supersonic speeds would be related to how efficient Overture's airframe is (I think Concorde can maintain mach 2 flight without using the afterburners), correct?
Captain Joe has arisen from the silence and has given me useful info that 8 shall definitely use in the future once I'm a pilot. Thanks Captain Joe. 😊😎

Hey man love ur vids they are really informative
@Captain Joe: Do you know of any Flight approved Nav Aids that use GLONAS or the upcoming Galileo along the US' GPS System?
Several manufacturers do indeed make flight-tested receivers capable of using signals from multiple constellations. They are generally sold as GNSS (Global Navigation Satelite System) receivers as that is the standard term for any satellite navigation system providing global coverage. Such multi-constellation systems not only benefit from redundancy but can provide superior accuracy in general with more data it's possible to solve for the position at higher precision with the same confidence threshold. This is simply due to the fact that there are a bunch of statistical techniques to detect, quantify and even filter out random noise in ordered data, and these work better the more data points they have to work with. The satellite signals are ordered data about which precisely the sorts of assumptions needed to make those techniques work can be made (Basically these techniques rely on the data having known internal dependencies which satellite navigation data signals do all times are related by the physical constant c for example).
The Best Pilot Planet Earth Has. God Bless You Captain Joe.
As a former AeroMed in the USAF (1968-1971) I have to disagree with you. The best pilots ever were those flying the C-9 Nightingales. No matter the conditions, their touchdowns were always smooth as a feather because of the patients they were transporting.
@@AFmedic It's called exaggeration btw.

When are you going to meet Mentour?
I prefer Joe.
@@laertesl4324 Apparently Mentour has tried a few times but no replies. I wonder if it may be related to the reason we haven't had many Captain Joe videos recently. I dont know, only guessing.
Nah, he should meet 74gear, another 747 pilot
I really would be disappointed but I have the feeling that Captain Joe do not want to meet Mentour because he tend to express his opinion on current aviation news and disasters and Joe said he can't stand that. Without forgetting that Mentour flies for Ryanair and Joe made a few allusions about that less desirable company. But I deeply hope that Joe is better and more humble than that and that this feeling is wrong.
Xxswag_dawgxX I second to this.
Thank you Joe. I'm right now studying how to intercept and navigate with VORs so it was really helpful. Thanks again.
The travel lane explanation of the CDI needle, is perhaps the simplest I have ever heard about the way the needle functions. Good nugget to take away there!
A good pilot is the one who doesn't need to prove that he is a good pilot!
Couldn´t agree more!
A good pilot doesn't fucking teach people to drive down the street while only HALF paying attention to the road because they're too busy monologuing at a camera.
@@shawnpitman876 It's in Germany, everyone is chill on the motorways. Besides, you can see him using hand signals. For all the other vehicles know, he's just taking a while for a lane change.
@@blewis42002 - That doesn't sound right. Germany is obsessed with rules and conformity.
A C Oh I know that, but they can’t control some guy taking a few seconds for a lane change. They can’t control every single person and force them to do exactly what they want.
Captain Joe, could you make a video about “How to pick a flight school”?

2:21 That's the Symbol for a VORTAC, not a TACAN.
He labeled it wrong on the right, but he did say "VOR TACAN symbol" or VORTAC, which for military aircraft, can just be used as a typical TACAN station. The VORTAC symbol looks more similar to a TACAN symbol than the other VOR symbols because all a VORTAC station is is a TACAN station with VOR bearing capabilities.
Thank you so much for this video! I’m in ground school right now and the way I was taught it made absolutely no sense. After watching this video, I feel a lot more confident and VOR seems much less intimidating!

Wanted to become an aeronautical engineer now becoming an electrical engineer Sad life
Anonymous Assassins Wanted to become a pilot, then tried to become an aeronautical engineer now becoming mechanical engineer. I know that feeling bro
Don't be too sad. There's tons of electrical engineering jobs in the avionics industry. I'm a software programmer for an avionics company and I still get to learn a ton about airplanes and helicopters. I even get to make virtual instrument panels that look and behave like the real thing!
Wanted to become a mechanical engineer, became a mechanical engineer. Then wanted to become a pilot, now becoming a pilot. Happy life
You can still become an aeronautical engineer if you work for an aerospace company! An electrical engineer is a aeronautical engineer if he/she works with aircraft. In fact, getting an electrical/mechanical degree is generally more recommended than an aerospace degree as it is broader and allows you to find work in more places.
You're not alone comrade... Wanted to be an aerospace civilian engineer. Entry exam went wrong. Now beginning physician bachelor (and hoping to enter space sciences master) ((and maybe with luck, hope and determination ... ending with physician civilian engineering year))
Just a curiosity. How long will you become a real “CAPTAIN”?

The US Air Force operates GPS. As an American taxpayer who's tax dollars keep it up and running: you're welcome!
There are other systems in place though and they are being used too.
Thank you, but I am guessing you were not asked or had a say-so in the financing of the US GPS. Things like this just get decided over the US taxpayers head (or even behind their backs) - some call it the *industrial military complex* en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Military%E2%80%93industrial_complex , which Eisenhower warned early on about: kzhead.info/sun/a91pZrKLeXSIp5E/bejne.html Fortunately other countries also have satellites in place. The EU for example has the Galileo system: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galileo_(satellite_navigation) It is accurate down to 0,2m precision! Read who has been and is financing the project at the moment! You are welcome :-)
US GPS, European Galileo, Russian Glonass, even a chinese one coming up. They're all available at the moment and it's unlikely galileo will turn the light out. (compared to GPS/Glonass). Note that GPS is already preventing usage in some area of the worlds or intentionally reduced precision. Also, they charge you for anything more precise than 20m on ground (that's why sea swimmers are complaining when using smart watch as it doesn't show their path very well :D)
