Accession - Red Wings vs Kings, 2001 WCQF
The Detroit Red Wings teams of the late-90's and early-00's were some of the greatest of the modern era. After some disappointing playoff exists in 1999 and 2000, they were ready and able to return to glory and hoist the Stanley Cup.
But in their way stood an unassuming, largely-unsuccessful 7 seed - the Los Angeles Kings. And one man on their roster, though he wore new colors on his sweater, was the same old bee in their bonnet as he was in years prior.
And both he and his team were gunning for an an upset.

*Detroit Red Wings exist* Adam Deadmarsh: "...And I took that personally."
God, that's a name I ain't heard in years lol
Àdam Deadmarch on the cup
Deadmarsh also schooled the Wings when it came to the rough stuff. When he was with the Avs, he decisively got the better of both McCarty and Shanahan, beat up Konstantinov and Fetisov, and was only debatably taken to a draw or edged by Lapointe.
This series holds a special place for Kings fans. Between 1993 and 2012, this was our only series win.
These videos are 100x more exciting when you don't know the outcome. I jumped a bit when the Kings came back to win game 4
here I am wanting one of the most entertaining red wings series of all time and instead I get one of the most EMBARRASSING instead 💀💀💀
The Wings' time will come! :)
@@PinholesGraham I once again beg you for the 2009 wings vs ducks series it was so awesome
It was glorious for some of us who never forgot.
At least we don’t have Toronto’s rapport. They have it pretty bad lol. I didn’t know about this series till this video. But the 4 cups in between made me not care.
Certified Red Wings moment
I’ve seen Crosby talk about Palffy being one of the most skilled players he’s ever seen and that was in his last year in the league.
This Kings team was insane took Colorado to 7 that year too
Such a great series. So bummed Deadmarsh's career was so short he was absolutely clutch. Also boy do I miss Bob Miller...
Babe wake up, pinholes graham posted
I was six years old at the Frenzy on Figueroa and it solidified my lifelong Kings fandom. It felt like every goal had to be reviewed and the place erupted with cheers twice for each one goal. My friend and his dad left the game with about 7 minutes left to beat the traffic. We have never let them live that down.
John Ireland, the Lakers' radio announcer, swears to this day that the reaction to Deadmarsh's goal is the loudest he's ever heard a crowd at Staples Center.
I haven't even started watching and I already know this is going to be a fantastic video. This Red Wings-Kings series was a forgotten but amazing series.
Hope you enjoy it!
I definitely haven’t forgotten it, lol
Us old Kings fans have never fogotten. I can still rattle off every Kings player that played in that series.
Wings fan. They never forget it
Let this be a lesson to all of those watching If the 90's/2000's Red Wings can blow a 3 goal lead with 6 minutes left in the 3rd in 2001, then no lead is safe in 2022. Truly a great video, even if you already knew the outcome of this series it still had you on the edge of your seat the entire time
San Jose Sharks: its okay guys its 2023 goals get scored all the time, now lets come back from a 1 billion to 0 Deficit!
Felix Potvin played this series like he did when he was in Toronto. People called him washed up and he answered.
Never forget when Potvin also played for the Isles, Canucks, and Bruins. But it's safe to say his time as a King and Maple Leaf is what he will be remembered for. Kinda odd when you remember that the Kings beat his Leafs in 1993.
As a Kings fan. That was our 1980 miracle on ice. The level of under dog that LA was, it seemed insurmountable...and every Kings fan heading into that series knew it.
This was a great upset but it isn't the Miracle on Manchester.
@@paladin677 it was the fury on Figeroa.
@@dominickefrim3088 No, not 2001. 1982. Game 3. Kings vs Wayne Gretzky's Oilers.
@@paladin677 i know. This game against the Redwings where LA mounted an improbable comeback was called the "Fury on Figeroa".
@@dominickefrim3088 Okay. My comment was originally that as good as this was, it was still behind 1982 as far as Kings miracles go. The Oilers had an aura that few teams had. This Detroit team was close, but they had those injuries which made the difference.
This Kings team was very under rated . Potvin came in around the trade deadline I believe after a tough start in Vancouver early on but went on a tear and had 5 shutouts in that span after joining the Kings . LA would push the Cup champs to 7 games and would do it against the champs in 2002 with another 7 game series . The 2001 and 2002 king teams could of been contenders for the cup but the Wings and Avalanche literally bought the cups these 2 years with the HOF teams .
The series that made the Wings go scorched earth that summer and get Hasek, Robitaille, and Hull.
Hurt to lose Kozlov
This was the series where I first started watching hockey. I remember going over to a friends house with my dad and watching every game, and then all the Avalanche games in the next series. And then it just never stopped. Years later I went to Adam Deadmarsh night at the Staples Center and they gave everyone a mini painted poster of that game 6 ot goal. LA has come along way since then but man that team had spunk.
This Kings team was very special. They almost beat the Avalanche too.
I got to meet Deadmarsh when I was a younggggggg kid. The dude is an Avalanche legend and a beloved piece of Avalanche lore
And then in the following off-season, Detroit signed Brett Hull, got Luc Robitaille from those LA Kings, traded for The Dominator, and won it all in 2002. Curious to know if these changes would have happened if this upset didn't take place. 2-0 series lead evaporates in the next 4 games. It stunned the hockey world.
Ive never forgotten this series. Brutal year for the Wings
Always nice to see Potvin in action, even when not playing as a Leaf. He had a nice comeback season with the kings. My respects to the Kings and their fans aswell as to this channel!
I didnt even remember this series. This seemed like one that Detroit could of easily won, even with key players out. They were just that good at that time. Kinda despised them for it at the time, but now im impressed with the team they had.
You think this team was stacked, the next year they would add Dominik Hasek, Luc Robitaille and Bret Hull to help win the cup.
This is easily the most underrated series on KZhead
I was 8 years old when I went to game 6 and I’ll never forget when Deadmarsh scored that winner
Deadmarsh was one of my favourites growing up! Tough power forward who can put the puck in the net, can't ask for a better player. It's a shame concussions shortened his career, could've saw him play another few great seasons
I was at Frenzy on Figueroa. It was then and always will be the most unreal event I ever attended. Then I went to a watch party at a restaurant for game 6 and Deadmarsh’s goal created chaos in celebration - everyone jumping up and knocking over tables in the process. I hope to be continued means a view to the Ava series.
After you make a video on the 2012 series between the Flyers and Penguins, you should do one on the 2014 Western Conference Finals. That clash between the Kings and Chicago might be the best one of the decade
Aw poor Osgood. Got unlucky in the Islander’s/Leafs series too. Well, I guess the amount of cups he has he can afford to get embarrassed every once in a while
LA went on to give the Avs one hell of a fight, I still remember playing street hockey anticipating game 7 lol
I was 16 when this series happened and I'll never forget it because it was the first series that piqued my interest in hockey, which is pretty amazing considering I was a huge Lakers fan and this took place during the absolute peak of the Shaq-Kobe years. For a few days, there was talk of having an NBA Finals and a Stanley Cup Finals at Staples Center within a few weeks of each other. Alas, the Avs made sure it wasn't to be.
Dude why have I never seen this channel before. Just straight banger after banger.
I was at that game 4 and cannot tell you how loud it was when Smolinski scored that goal. It was absolutely insane Remembering it now I still get goosebumps on my arms.
I was there as a Wings fan. Gut-wrenching. It felt hopeless from that point on. Kings fans took every opportunity to rub the OT goal / win in me and my dad’s faces during the long walk out of the stadium.
@eightequalsequalsdee you guys smoked us tonight tho...
@@kingsfan2099 How about Kopitar passing Fedorov in points tonight, though
@eightequalsequalsdee no joke but Federov was one of my favorite players to watch growing up. Pavel Bure also when he was wearing the flying skate. My family just recently became huge hockey fans. We are season ticket holders for the Kings AHL team.
@@kingsfan2099 Fedorov was amazing, and of course, Bure, too. Two of my favorites also, for sure. Glad to hear the hockey bug is spreading in your family! AHL hockey is still an incredible skill level, so fun to watch up close.
Thank you so much for making this video! This is a classic series amongst Kings fans, although I didn’t become a fan until the 02/03 season. Didn’t get to see them in the playoffs for the first time until 2010 (or a series win until 2012) so I just used to watch highlights of this series. Bob Miller’s calls were so legendary, and Ziggy Palffy was my first (and all time) favorite player, which is where Ziggy comes from in my username. Once again, I appreciate all of the hard work you do that goes into these videos! These are amazing!
The game 3 win snapped a 14 game Kings playoff losing streak
Wow.. That was so fun reliving that moment. Ill never forget that feeling on that day being there. Thanks for the memory.
Phenomenal video. Potvin was so cool. Miss these days 🙌
God damn, this reminds me of those old SN recaps of series, keep it up
"TO BE CONTINUED" AAAAAAA OMG MY FAVOURITE SERIES OF ALL TIME IS GETTING COVERED!! YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW MUCH I CAN'T WAIT FOR IT!!
I SURE HOPE I CAN FIND BETTER FOOTAGE FOR GAMES 2 3 5 AND 6 SO I CAN GET YOU THE BEST VIDEO POSSIBLE
Red Wings fan here. Good video. At the time, I remember thinking that if Yzerman and Shanahan were both out for significant time then they had no chance of competing with Colorado, Dallas, or St. Louis and we’re basically screwed no matter what. Martin Lapointe took a lot of costly penalties that series, including two in Game 6, if I recall. Chris Oagood always made me uneasy in net. The only cup run he was good on was 2008. I know he won in 1998 as the starter, but that year he kept letting in bad goals from center ice each series and then would post a shutout the next game, so I think the Wings won in spite of Osgood that year.
It was only one series but Potvin also knew a thing or two about beating Detroit in the playoffs.
Fantastic trip down memory lane! Got to witness Game 6 with my sister from the Captain's chairs at the old ESPN Zone in Downtown Disney. When Deadmarsh scored the series clincher, the place erupted! The kitchen staff all came out to see what was going on and said they have never heard it so loud in there. Also great to hear the excitement in the Legend Bob Miller's voice. Great series, great memories, and say it with me...ADAM👏FREAKING👏DEADMARSH👏 Thanks for putting this video together. Go Kings Go!!!
I might be late to the game in comments. But I just wanted to say you did a fantastic job with this video.
These are the videos I have been searching for all over KZhead
Let's gooooooooo!
You should do the 2003 wild vs Avs playoff, great 7 game series with a similar story to this one, some OT and it was Roy’s last series as a goalie
So stoked for this! Been enjoying your regular uploads and sharing them with the lads whenever I can! Hope the holidays treat you well and thanks for sharing your work with us
Legend! Thank you, sir! Happy holidays :)
I was at game 4. My dad's from Michigan and raised us on the wings, so obviously it was rough to watch in person. As I was leaving with my family, an LA fan saw my Konstantinov jersey and yelled, "Hey Kid!! How's Konstantinov doing?!" If you don't know, Vladimir Konstantinov had suffered brain damage in a limo accident after the '97 Stanley Cup win and could no longer play. A grown man said this to an 11 year old. Classy folks over in LA.
Dang that's a pretty terrible thing to say. Every fanbase has its dregs, I guess.
that red wings roll call is unbelievable
The series upset that awakened a monster. The Wings went full send adding Hasek, Hull and Robitille and steamrolled everyone the next year.
Boyd Deveraux got caught puck watching on the back check on the final goal. Deadmarsh was his man and he didn’t skate over to cover him. On a positive note, Deveraux would go on the very next season to play on an infamous line with Brett Hull and the new rookie…Pavel Datsyuk. Playing an important role in winning the Stanley Cup. So I’m sure this mistake is now a distant memory.
Game 6 was my first game at the new Staples Center. The electricity in that building was epic! I will never forget how nuts that place went after Deadmarsh scored in OT. Gives me chills watching it again. Great video 👍
This channel is so good. You’re story telling and fact based videos are so engrossing and captivating. I wish you had more than 9 videos up ❤️❤️❤️
12:54 game three in 2001 was an 8 o’clock or so Los Angeles time start after an afternoon game in Detroit the day before. No time to regroup. Terrible decision by the NHL. After the comeback in game four as a wings fan, you just knew it was over. You showed up, you cheered. You stayed up late on a school night with the radio on, but you knew it was over.
This one hurt bad…when I was 14ish years old. Love these vids. I’m only 3+ min in, but two things… #1. Goaltending. Osgood’s numbers sucked for the the time, especially with the team in front of him…thus why we traded for Hasek after the season. #2. We didn’t have an 80pt player because most teams didn’t….was the “height” of the dead puck era. Oh, btw, you were DEAD ON about Deadmarsh and Miller. Especially Deadmarsh…I remember him, distinctly, being the deciding factor in the series.
Another banger! I need moar, this is fucking amazing.
I have to say. This was some great story telling. Kind of like a David vs Goliath.
Been bingeing you videos all weekend. My man, you need a Patreon account. Fantastic videos.
Robitaille would end up winning a cup later with the wings. Lol this series hit hard. people started panicking until summer hit and they signed everyone lol
“They know that victory is awarded not by the size of the dog in the fight, but by the size of the fight in the dog.” No way in hell do you write your own scripts that’s so damn good
These are great!
These are so good it’s unreal, keep it up man.
My guy, you killed it. Good job
Thanks,pal.NHL in early 2000-s wasn't broadcasted in Ukraine,I haven't seen these games.Nice to have a retrospective look.
great video as always man looking forward to the to be continued
Just subscribed to you man! Wings fan, heart breaking loss, but this video is still awesome! Can’t wait to see what else you’ll put out.
The narrative is absolutely fantastic, epic content.
Great work once again! Your presentation and production value are strong as always!
Your content is amazing bringing Mr back to my childhood can't wait to see the other series coming
thank you for the interesting historical video about the battles in the playoffs Respect to you and I'm waiting for more videos)))
Another absolutely gem of a video!!!!
THANK YOU!! One of my all time favorite series and another great video by Pinholes the legend
Great video as always. Keep it up!
Thank you, Joseph!
Criminally underrated channel. Keep up the great work!
Patiently waiting for the 2006 finals video 🙏
here's a suggestion: a look at the Blackhawks vs Canucks rivalry from '08-'09 through '10-'11. while not that long, it was a VERY INTENSE rivalry, w/ it basically ending in a near reverse sweep in the '11 first round
I second this.
You make some of the best hockey content on KZhead. Keep up the great work
i gloss over it in my script but you ensure it again burns into my mind like a lit cigarette
Love these in depth series recaps...wud love to see oilers avs or oilers stars from late 90s
For obvious reasons, the video about the 2006 ECF is my favorite of yours, but damn man, that intro to Game 6's overtime might be the best individual moment of any of you videos.
Finally I’ve been waiting man
MASSIVELY underrated channel
hope you end up making a video for the next series that came after this! loved the frenzy on figueroa when i was growing into my kings fandom in my youth
It always sucks watching your vids cause eventually they end. Never stop. So well done.
That's a huge compliment, thanks so much! :)
This is a great video about an oft-forgotten series. Thank you for all your hard work! This is great watching.
Thank you very much! Glad you liked it :)
I love these videos. I would love to see the 1996 ECF between the Pens and the Panthers.
Well done on the narration and editing. Absolutely outstanding.
Thank you kindly!
Dude, thank you so much for your amazing content. You are so amazing!!! Great job!!!!
Thank you for being here! :)
I think Pinholes just really likes talking about series and rivalries where Chris Osgood takes part
A big takeaway from this I realized upon re-watch was the amount of former Milbury-era Islanders were on these Kings. Gives some proof that the personnel wasn’t the biggest issue for the late 90’s Isles, Mad Mike and the off-ice turmoil was the real problem
I waS GOING CRAZY!!! In front of all my red wing fan friends too, it was GREAT!!
Excellent video to end the year on. Happy holidays and see you and your videos in the next year with the hopes that the hockey world continues to find these!
I hope so too! Thank you for the well wishes :)
I absolutely love these playoff series from the past videos, Keep up the good work!
Glad you enjoy it! Thanks for watching :)
That Kings team was so fun
As a fan of their opponent in round 2 - that Kings team was a nightmare. Potvin was a brick wall.
Still waiting for the sequel ;) your videos are awesome man keep doing that great work
You won't have to wait long ;)
Great video man! Starting to get your own feel for your videos which is great, Keep up the amazing work, Seeing these old great series broken down is awesome.
Glad you like them! Thanks for watching :)
Wonderful editing and story telling, you're really talented!
Thank you so much, Emile!
Love your videos man. The effort you put in is evident and makes for super well crafted and entertaining videos. Keep it up!!
Glad you like them! Thanks a ton :)
This was fun. I remember watching this on ESPN. The West had some of the best series.
He does it again! Yet another fantastic video. Another series I knew nothing about, and it was so compelling to experience for the first time. I get so excited every time you post the teasers in the community tab. Keep up the great work!
Thanks, Michael! Good to gear about the teasers. More to come :)
