Cuphead: Don't Deal with the Devil is a run and gun indie video game developed and published by StudioMDHR. The game was inspired by the rubber hose style of animation used in cartoons of the 1930s, such as the work of studios Fleischer and Walt Disney Animation, and seeks to emulate their subversive and surrealist qualities.
Cuphead features one or two players taking control of animated characters Cuphead and his brother Mugman to fight through several levels that culminate in boss fights as to repay their debt to The Devil. An animated series based on the game, entitled The Cuphead Show!, is in production for Netflix.

Me too. Especially because of the laugh
Well Bluto did played as the character. So they're not completely off
It's definitely bluto.
It’s in the right track since Simbad was a Popeye cartoon and he was supposed to be Bluto, but I would definitely say it’s more Bluto in general

definetly eggman

@@janmanuel4273 Its also inspired by Gunstar Heroes. Cuphead being Red and Mugman being Blue. And a lot of the weapons were also heavily inspired from Gunstar Heroes. Like the tracers and bosses transforming.

Golly, Betty Boop's so nice, she's featured twice!!!
Nice rhymes.
Nobody thought it was more of an olive oil?
The frogs were litterally, Ryu and Ken, and the mad doctor was Dr. Wily from Megaman.
There are some children books I grew up with simply called Frog and Toad... They look 100% identical to them... But yes there actions are based on Ryu and Ken as the Frog and Toad characters from the children's books only ever went fishing at there furthest physical limits...

I remember them somewhat fondly, but my mother never explained to me where she came by them and at this point I've just kinda excepted that it's one of those things lost to time for me... I don't believe they where anything important to my family but the books had a VERY English sort of overtone in how the characters behaved... I love how King Dice is based off of a real person. The Cab Calloway himself
Cab Calloway also gave the move to the Clown and many others Betty Boop characters, like the Old Rapist of the Mountain.
All the cartoon references are so old, they still look fun to some people, including me.
So Grim Matchstick’s name is a nod to Grim Natwick , the man who designed and helped create Betty Boop
He also has a pronounced stutter in-game, just like Natwick did
Dr. Kahl is also named after an animator called Milt Kahl who worked for Disney
1:12 the cuphead seller's name is Porkrind
I never thought Cuphead and Mugman were inspired by Mickey and Oswald (who are technically brothers) Oogie Boogie was also inspired by Cab Calloway and his gambling problem.
Cuphead was inspired by a cup character in a cartoon called Evil Mickey invades Japan.
That actually makes a lot of sense.
When i first saw Cuphead and Mugman in 2017, I thought "these guys kinda look like mickey mouse."
some of these are stretches but most of them make sense like the flower hand dance ghost thing (that description made no sense)
Cuphead, more than a video game inspired by classic cartoons, is a tribute to the origins of the animation industry. PD: Wouldn't that 'cartoon rabbit' be Bugs Bunny in his first designs (from 1942 or earlier if I'm not mistaken)?
1938 his first design as happy rabbit before his debut as bugs bunny at 1940
You are correct! It's his 'proto-Bugs' form as 'Happy Rabbit' before he would evolve into Bugs Bunny as we know him today. The short he's pictured in here is 'Prest-0 Change-0' in 1939.
a lifestyle
Of COURSE the Root Gang are The 3 Stooges! That's not a bad idea character wise! I hope they keep that in the show version Also ancient kettle? It's Elder Kettle mate!
3:01 the texts have been switched on accident, I think

I’d say you’re missing Sally Stageplay’s final form being a Kefka from Final Fantasy 6 reference, but other than that, awesome video!! Loved watching it!
thanks ^^
i guess the makers of the game watched a lot of classic cartoons to get inspiration
I love that Tom and Woody Woodecker' were referenced in Cuphead! I literally screamed with joy when I saw those two! The game devs really did their research on this! Bravo!

Oh dear lord! I used to listen to Cab Calloway a lot when I was younger! I practically grew up on him since my grand parents loved songs from the early 1800's and 1900's! Man... How long has that been? 8 or 9 years? Golly. Time sure does fly. TvT
Ready to have your mind blown?? The early 1800's and 1900's were actually a lot longer ago than 8 or 9 years. Now you know, lol.

He made this all up.
1:12 Porkrind - WonderBoy Dragons Trap
I really think Dr. Kahl was inspired by Dr. Wily, even the attack patterns of him kinda remind me of Wily
Same with his design. Patchy hair on the sides of the head, the facial hair, the vehicle he's piloting, those as well. Also, Dark Souls FTW!
King Dice's laughing face when he summons the cards resembles the owner of Pleasure Island from Pinocchio (the guy who turns boys into donkeys). The quote that matches the face was "They don't come back... as BOYS!"
true xD
When the slime switches to the tombstone phase, its animation is reminiscent of an enemy from Bomberman.
Hilda Berg has also something to do with Olivia, and King Dice is definitely sir Walt Disney, period.

You know who I wish Cuphead made a reference to? Gertie the Dinosaur.
This is pretty fascinating
Wow this is amazing
Hilda Berg could have also been Olive Oyl (my first thought) or .... there is a another pointed nose character I vaguely have in mind but I think she was an old woman. Also, though I actually think a lot of these are great, there are a few I think are a stretch and don't see very well. Still very well made :3 it was enjoyable to watch
thanks :)
Small Fact: i thought Mr. Hopp was a reference to Hocus Pocus
It’s very interesting to see by the fact that I didn’t realize that all of these were just references to old cartoons and old games until just now
Reference = (to this guy) finding something that remotely resembles the character
You missed one. In Sally Stageplay's form where she's raining fire and lightning, she's in the same pose as Kefka during the final boss of FF6.
i have to make a video with all of your contributions in the future :)
Grim matchstick. Blue eyes Ultimate dragon

True sorry xD
Pretty soon, cuphead will be a show on Netflix. Kinda hyped
2:23 Fun fact Mortimer was original name of Ub and Walt design character that was supose to rival Oswalt the lucky rabbit when Universal took him from them. But Walt's wife though is bad name and told them to change it to Mikey. Also because Betty is few times here... her original design was that of a antromorphic dog. Purely because she was on and off girlfriend of Bimbo the Fleischer's cartoons main character (and rival to Mikey mouse character). After loss of popularity for Bimbo, she took a spotlight and slowly changed to more human character.
We are going to skip over the part about how hildaberg is literally named after the Hindenburg
I think Beppi the Clown was also inspired by Art the Clown from Terrifier. They have the same hat, grin, and bald head.
I've always thought the horse the clown boss rides was based off of Hunky and Spunky of some sort
Damn, some of those old timey cartoons are freaky.
Hilda Berg is Olive Oil, Popeye's girlfriend.
Course she also has Betty's hair style.
I played a lot of Wonder Boy 3 on my childhood. That's why i immediately recognized the pig from the store.
I never thought of the three stooges ones, thats very clever 😁
