CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Sara (Ellen Burstyn) tells the ladies she's going on a diet while Harry (Jared Leto) and Tyrone (Marlon Wayans) land a big score.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Based on the novel by Hubert Selby Jr., this gritty drama concerns four people trapped by their addictions. Harry (Jared Leto), and his best friend Tyrone (Marlon Wayans) are impoverished heroin addicts living in Coney Island, NY, while Harry's girlfriend Marion (Jennifer Connelly) is a fellow addict trying to distance herself from her wealthy father. Harry dreams of scoring a pound of smack, from which he could make enough money to open a clothing boutique with Marion, but so far he and his friends can barely scrape by supporting their own habits. Meanwhile, Harry's mother Sara (Ellen Burstyn), who spends her days watching television, is told she has the opportunity to appear on her favorite game show; wanting to lose enough weight to fit into her favorite red dress, she visits a sleazy doctor who gives her a prescription for amphetamines. Soon Sara has a drug habit of her own that is spiraling out of control. Requiem for a Dream was directed by Darren Aronofsky, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Selby; it was Aronofsky's second feature, following his acclaimed independent film Pi.

the mom's situation broke my heart the most
true..
Yea me too it was so scary!!! especially with the shock therapy n all & just seeing her body deteriorate so sad.
jazzyluvswaka sadly that happens a lot after people are prescribed meds and then they throw you out and they are screwed......
i honestly think the moms situation hurt everyone the most
@@s_shaddows.4939 for me, dying is preferable at this point. Omg
The mothers story in this movie was the saddest in my opinion
It utterly ruined me.
Agreed. She never knew the world she was entering unlike the others.
The worst movie if ur not prepared for it
Muy realista así somos muchas
The only person I cared about AT ALL in this film.
She was robbed!!!! She deserved the Oscar that year! It´s one of the most vivid and terrifying performances of all time!
Without a doubt. Burstyn gave a shockingly vivid performance. It was Oscar gold.
Absolutely, she was truly deserving of the Oscar that year,it was a travesty that she didn't receive it.
She's so happy and excited. The hope she put into being on tv, of thinking that it would give her life purpose again is so heartbreaking. Her loneliness and innocence is what makes it so sad. She's completely naive to what those pills are and what they're doing to her. Such a brilliant performance from Ellen Burstyn.
My grandma used to have a group of "red hatter" friends and I used to drive them places. I got to listen to them all the time. A brilliant combination of wit, wisdom, sweetness and sass. Old lades = best examples of human beings, sometimes.
@Diamond Dancing Kids who say "Ok Boomer" are often losers with parental and authority issues. Left wing losers in otherwords.

Facts
Looking back makes it even more sad. She looks happy and healthy here at the beginning.
She put on a happy face and smile, but the reality was that she was chasing a delusion and trying to live life through her adherence to the past.
she was depressed from the start... did u even see the movie?
putixöna the point is she looked way better then the end of the movie
She’s a bit fat though
@@boslyporshy6553 exactly And that's even worse honestly
What's sad is Sara Goldfarb didn't know how important she was to her friend's.. I feel like she meant more to them, than her idiot son.. 💔 so heart breaking..
I think her friends showed genuine interest only when something exciting was happening
@@Selinxxxxxxx when they’re sitting down to have public group chats, I think anything would interest them. Maybe the only thing keeping them away was the son
I love how they create a character like Sara, showing us that EVERYONE can chose this way, no matter the reason, the age, or how many people care about you, and her story was the saddest because she even loose her mind, freedom, sanity, her son, her dream, everything
And isolate herself from her friends and reality, by chasing a fantasy

This scene is satisfying so some reason. The dialogue. The back and forth. The music.
Clint Mansell's music is a character in this film.
-We're gonna make it darker -Why darker? -To go with my red dress It definitely got darker for the dress...
Wow! This is such a poignant observation.
Ellen Burstyn should have won an award for her performance X X
These parts right before everything goes to hell ... somehow they're even sadder to me.
I dont think I can watch this movie twice.... It's just an emotional onslaught.
I didn’t pay special attention to Sara’s friends until they visited at the hospital. Her two loyal friends who loved her dearly 💔
The 2 friends crying on the bench after seeing sara after the shock therapy was just another heartbreaking moment
I love 2:16 when they clap because only after when you see the movie do you realize they're preparing for her 'fame.' They did good with that part.
Wym her “fame”
@@CINEMEEZ They were under the belief that Sara was gonna be famous since she was apparently gonna be on TV.
SPOILER ALERT: This scene is really sad watching for a second time, since those of us who watch the movie, know what happens later. I now realize that the music used in this scene, sort of is event building, and intense, making you think that something crazy is going to happen, but now you realize that music was being used to show that the big events that we're possibly going to change their lives, and give them hopeless is ironic, because it sort of predicts disaster the way the music plays, which happens later in the movie, and makes you think that their lives are going to go on a different path, and they are going to be happy, but the events that unfold as the movie continues, makes this situation sadder, in this scene.
*give them hope, not hopless lol.
Why did not she receive mail back? Can someone please explain? Sorry for my english XD
Do you know how the music is called?
@@digitalchicken2166 Someone said its because she didn't put her return address on the envelope..Can't be on tv if they don't know where you reside or how to get ahold of you. 😪😩😭
@@danny00001 lux aeterna..I think Mozart produced the original lol but the Kronos quartet, famous for the Star Wars theme, made their own rendition for the film..
For those saying: "she didn't put a stamp on it." It might not be required. They sent her a questionnaire to be filled out, it could be "no stamp required." Just a thought.
She didn’t get a call back about the show. So no stamp is actually another level of genius writing.
“You know, you really shouldn’t talk like that when someone is on a diet” -my grandmother
This movie is so sad. The mom situation broke my heart
Something about the lighting, sound and empty streets in this film is unsettling. Especially with the pier scene
It’s sad that she felt so hollow, and, clearly in this scene, it’s to show how much, and how many people supported her, however also how when the center of attention it seems easy, when things are down, only 2 other women there were there. Those are rare friends and lovers and she was looking forward w To show she did have supports, the last two at the hospital, also shows even among them, 1 out 5 are true people.i It’s a dream.
When I see Ellen and I saw this movie I had a breakdown in my apartment and hugged myself so tightly. She was so captivating and her performance was almost too believable that I kept thinking she was a real person for a whole week worried about her. I know it's pretty crazy . My nieces came over unexpectedly and asked what I was watching I told them nothing fun and before everything started the beginning of the movie already startled them and I cried while watching and told them this is no fun and that I was watching a comedy that was so stupid. They left early with my brother and I wished them well but we're obviously weirded out by how meek I was acting as opposed to my usual cheerful self. I vowed to never show anyone this movie and that if I must watch it would be alone if I could bring myself to watch it again. This scene isn't so bad but the once witty Sarah who you can already see is anything but happy becomes even more drowned in her appearance that she is just so deep she can't get out. Prayers for anyone who is affected by addiction
Also might I add I made sure that they left just in the before things got progressively worse in the movie
0:38 -She went to a doctor who give her pills And she my buddies, she is the worst friend of all the history of films
It's bad advice, and ill-informed. Frustrating? Yes, and all too common. But that's far, _far_ from being the worst friend of all the history of films. I'd even call her a _bad_ friend. She didn't even have malicious or selfish intentions.
Amphetamine psychosis is uncommon, 0.01% also can’t really blame the friend for her addiction. I blame the doctor that prescribed them and ignored the dangerous side effects.
@@LinkEX Yeah there's no way that the old lady knew what the Doctor was prescribing. If she had I am sure she would have told her daughter to stop seeing him and she never would have recommended the Doctor. She just thought she was helping a friend.
@@epiccgamingtv true, but eating disorders are not uncommon...and her character's story is a study in how far down the rabbit hole one can fall.
The most disturbing part of the movie was when she asked the mailman if they had something for her before he even got to the cluster boxes in the complex, if real life that is literally the worst thing you could do to a mailman
You thought that them asking the mailman for mail was the most disturbing part of the movie? Lol
Sure did. This music was made for this movie alone - the piece is even called Requeim for a dream.
I wish they would have mirrored the novel a bit more for this. Her friends take notice of her getting worse and Sara isolates herself.. which would have translated better that her friends weren’t around till the end.
You gotta watch interview clips of Ellen Burstyn after this movie just to know she’s OK in real life. 😆
lol that makes me feel better for sure 🥲
I'm really glad she at least had really good friends and they didn't make fun of her hair

This scene is very important to the whole movie

Amazing
Anyone else notice at 2:12 she didn't put a stamp on the envelope?
that could probably explain what happened between her and the tv station, but the lack of emphasis on the envelope in the shot makes me also think that was just an error with their props.........or WAS IT?!
It was upside down watch closely you see the other side for a split second.
B1ackout no way any even remotely professional props master would simply forget something like that.... yet, id never even noticed this until it was pointed out. Great move !
+floydxpixie What I see, after replaying about 20 times, is a business reply envelope. The return postage is pre paid. At first I thought "it's her mail, she can't have used a machine stamp". Then I recalled that business mail like this, it is pre paid. There is an image in the top right corner of the envelope. Minute 2:11, you'll have to freeze it a few times, at least.....There are dark lines inside a square that indicate letters. Under the square, stamp image are a series of lines that may be a de-saturated red color. Since the words on the top of the envelope are "business reply mail" and we have an image where a stamp must be, we are forced to conclude this is a prepaid business envelope. But it was hard to see. It would have made her fate even more tragic and ironic.
So Samir doesn’t work at Inetech and he’s now a mailman…multiverse 🤔

yikes I can't finish it.
As powerful as this film was, it pales in comparison to the novel. A testament to Selby's extraordinary talent as a writer.
She should've just stuck with her diet she mentioned. Eggs and Grapefruit because those are actually healthy for you. Although I do not like Grapefruit myself at all. It tastes like this weird medicine I used to take when I was younger. I don't even like it when it people put sugar on it.
This whole movie is one big “should’ve done this and not that”.
This movie is full of stupid people who ruin their own lives. Not really sad, just the reality.

The neighbor who helps herself to some food (later seen eating a sandwich when the ladies are walking to the mailbox.)
I know why but some lines sound funny to me: Ada told us. It's so gorgeous. We're gonna make it darker. Why darker? To go with my red dress. Yeah but it's looking like Madonna. This is not Madonna, and neither is this. But soon - I'm going on a diet. What diet? Eggs and grapefruit. Oh, I was on that. Lots of luck. It's not so bad. How long you been on it? All day. All day! It's one o'clock! And....My Louise, she lost 50 lbs just like that. Like that? Like what? Poof! What'd did you do? Put her in a sweatbox?
+Katherine Donovan I don't know what's funnier, this dialogue or the fact that you decided to type it all out!
LOL, maybe it's cute to me to see women talk to one another. And I love how all the women follow her like she's champion but things don'tt end up great for her....:(

So was she ever gonna be on television? Or was that just a scam?
A scam.
I think she was suppose to be but normally call backs is after a year so it is possible she was suppose to be on tv plus it’s the 70s so I imagine commutation is a lot different with these types of things but that’s thinking positivity I guess she didn’t give them money so idk if it’s a scam
Lol this movie is funny 🤣🤣🤣
Ha!
just change in.
Mailman must have lost his job at intertrode
"Not-gonna-work-here-anymore"
Also I take pills myself and I am pretty sure you're not supposed to "eat" them. Because then it's gonna just taste awful. But it only matters most that I actually follow the instructions and only take my pills once a day and not after every five seconds like Sara does in this movie.
Stimulants can be put in food and consumed. The longer you are on stimulants the less effective they get so you either take micro dosages or you space them throughout the day for a better effect .
This movie is a stiff drink, and not for everyone, but it’s a raw depiction of what happens when people just lose their souls to the most unexpected wants, needs, distractions. Burstyn is brilliant. Leto is, too. Not a pleasant film, though. Not meant to be.
I don’t get it, if she really wasn’t going to be on tv then why did she get an application? Was that a delusion too?
Maybe she was denied later ?
No, it wasn't a delusion. It was a scam.
See was denied later because when they saw the state she was in after taking the pills they didn't want her on the show
Honestly I have only seen the movie once(couldn't bear to watch it again). I thought the game show was building up a 'bank' of possible contestants. Like when a store advertises for a job, you may get called back in 6 months to see if you are still available. The game show wanted to have a full slate of contestants to draw from for the entire season. Some people are never going to get called.
No one noticed she forgot a stamp?? How are they supposed to receive without a stamp ?
Well maybe that’s why she never got the call back

Get a therapist.
Every night? And you're able to go to sleep?
I kinda feel this is overrated because it seems to be written from the prospective of someone who read a little about drug addiction and "the streets" and no someone who's lived it. A few thing's that bug me They're all heroin addicts but act like her getting amphetamines is a big deal and worry about her habit, and they acted like they didn't know what they were. They would be hip and they'd be eating her pills too. Another thing is Wayne's character hangs out with jared all the time right? But because he's black even though he runs in the same circle as jared, his home life is automatically gangland shootouts and "fools bustin caps".
The son reacting to the mother’s new drug habit is completely natural. As a druggie himself he knows the affects amp. Of course he’s being hypocritical but thats the human condition in all of us. To see faults in our loved ones but not within our own
Also Wayne’s character can live in a different area and still hang out with Jared’s character. Nothing illogical or far fetched about it. Also Wayne’s character is main force behind all the drug deals. He’s the one who knows how to deal or who to go for the heroin. So it makes sense he lives in a more ghetto area.
I think it stupid hearing these old women talk about losing weight like there old anyways who they wanna look good for
Brooke Cantu themselves ... just cause they've aged doesn't mean they have no value or the right to look good lmao.
Did you fall asleep during Sara's monologue to Harry?

@@TinaRayMusic how old are you
