  • "it held Finland's most dangerous criminals" "This cell was often used to hold drunk drivers who got caught" I wish every country was like this

    @justasnowball@justasnowball Жыл бұрын
    • I have always wondered what people from other countries think about Finland. Why do you wish every country was like Finland? You wish every country was so numb and boring as Finland? Or empty and cold. Yes we have free healthcare and education but we pay a fuckton of taxes for it too.

      @emil3458@emil3458 Жыл бұрын
    • @@emil3458 think of it this way: would you rather be scared to wear a watch in the streets because you might just get killed for it. Would you rather be scared for your life when police stop you. Would you rather be scared to go outside when it gets past 8pm or so because there's a big chance you'll get mugged. Would you rather have to avoid certain parts of town because they're run by violent gangs. Would you rather take your chances treating yourself because the ambulance ride alone is enough to bankrupt you. When you zoom out you see things a bit different. You said finland is numb and boring, that leaves me to think that you think other countries aren't boring. For you, a tourist, they might not be. But for locals, their home country is just as boring as finland is to you. And for them Finland seems super exciting and interesting. It's all about perspective. When I said I wish every country was like finland, I don't necessarily mean identical, but rather 'as safe' as Finland. Safety doesn't mean boring and numb, it means safe. You are the one who makes your life exciting, not the country you live in.

      @justasnowball@justasnowball Жыл бұрын
    • @@justasnowball There's like multiple places in Finland where you don't wanna be alone at night, especialy if you're a woman. You also don't wanna wear anything expensive like nice shoes or belts, its way too common nowadays to get mugged, happens even in shopping centers in the middle of the day. Even if criminals haven't robbed u yet, the government will. Taxes high as fuck. About Finland being boring and numb, if you think we are so interesting then tell me something that u would want to do here. Pretty sure you won't find anything else but forests and lakes. It is true though, we are quite safe, but the violence is there. Wrong place, wrong time, you will find yourself getting stomped in the head and left alone in the freezing.

  • You should visit Hämeenlinna prison museum if you like prisons, there's also Hämeenlinnas castle next to it and artillery museum which all of you can visit if you buy this bundle ticket to them. Also close to Hämeenlinna is Parolan panzer/tank museum which is also cool place to visit, there is during this summer a King Tiger ww2 German tank there on display from England. Edit: Also in that prison museum there is hologram projector in one cell where different ex cons are telling stories about their life in prison and for what crime they got put to there, it was neat detail to see.

    @SwimmingInSunlight@SwimmingInSunlight Жыл бұрын
  • I lived half a month in a (supposedly) haunted ex-prison (no prisoners since 1992), that was nowhere NEAR this fancy, because I had nowhere else to stay. The cell contained one bed, one small cabinet and a foldable table from the wall, that when folded out took up all the minimal floor space. Shared toilets, showers and kitchen. This was in Falu Fängelse, Falun, Sweden. It for sure was... an experience of a lifetime. The solid bars in front of the window and the reinforced entrance made sure you didn't forget you were staying at a fairly "new" ex-prison. They even had a small exhibition in the cellar(/basement) about the contraband and letters they found in the cells when the prison was still up and running. Sadly, I think the lodging there has closed according to their website, but I will never ever forget my stay there. It's one of those things you tell your grandkids.

      @Tuba000@Tuba000 Жыл бұрын
    • @@Tuba000 Quite true indeed. I think it is because modern psychology focus on people’s ability to cure, rather to punish them. Historically, punishing people haven’t proven to be efficient at all. In my country, Sweden, the interns are even given a small amount of “salary” every day so they can be able to get back to “normal” life situation as soon as possible when they leave the prison. One might think that is a bit naive, but we have to believe that people possess an ability to change. What else do we have, right?

  • I guess you know that the sentences in Finland are small, but the prisons received reprimands from the EU for conditions almost comparable to torture? In Kakola, the prisoners were shitting and pissing in buckets, like 15years ago. The doors of the cells are closed from 18 to 23 hours a day. Being a remand prisoner in Finland is also torture, 23 hours alone in a booth where there isn't even a window to see out. No clock, nothing. Don't do the crime if u cant do the time - This one is very true in Finland. 😂
