Like any good predator, I sometimes roll in the carcass of a dead animal to throw off my scent. Today that animal is Dead Space 3, a game that killed a series and a developer. It's a sad tale of over-expectation and under delivery. Here are the sins of Dead Space 3.

Ds3 was just a money hungry with some good ideas here and there but the game was major league unfinished and you can even tell just from the camera angles cutting carver out from time to time to focus on issac.

    • @@dan78789 A lot of people look at the franchise as something slowly falling to it's death, and it isn't without reasons... As much as i loved the franchise, i got more and more disapointed at the shift in genre in dead space, due to it switching from horror to EA action games, because they wanted it to sell like hot cakes rather than filling a niche... Due to that, you can clearly see the difference between the first game and the third, one is a quiet and ambiant game with panic shooting and on the edge gameplay, you can feel the dread as you crawl through that ship, the other is still on the edge, but you're just being thrown in with cutsenes, way too much dialogue immerse yourself, over the top scenario and action, and aside from jumpscare, barely anything frightening... The OG fans came for the Horror, but left when all that was left was a an action-shooter with some weird lore (tbf, we still played it, because we wanted more, but yeah, still disapointed)... And then EA shutting down the studio because of them now meeting their SLA in term of sales ... Well that's quite sad in fact.

    • I love the franchise overall--it's one of my favorite, but DS3 started to drag a bit once it began to feel like a series of tasks to be completed instead of focusing on survival horror. I still like the overall concept, but just like Mass Effect 3, it just starts to drag. I still play all three games whenever I'm in the mood for another playthrough, though. • The first Dead Space is one of my favorite horror games. The atmosphere was great, they didn't feel the need to throw enemies at you in every room and while it probably had plotholes I enjoyed the story. I didn't like 2 as much since it was far more of an action game. I didn't like 3 at all except for the stuff in orbit which felt a lot more like the first game though with a lot more stuff to kill. My biggest issue with 3 is that almost every room is just a gauntlet of monsters. Enter room, room locks, kill several waves of enemies, repeat.

  • About some sins: Sin 11: Well you could have material that burns by itself that explodes? Just like rocket fuel can burn in the vacuum because it already has it's oxygen, this could happen here as well. Just an idea tho :3 Sin 12: Norton recruits Isaac because they are convinced that he is necessary to destroy the markers. They have no clue but he did it twice. Plus he has experience in fighting the Necromorphs so he actually is of great value. His later resent for Isaac is caused by the Marker manipulating Norton because it tries to manipulate the group and their efforts so that they fail. For that, it also utilizes the plot-convenient coincidence that Norton is the new Lover of Isaac's ex to fuel jealousy. Sin 24: I doubt that Titan station housed BILLIONS of people. It surely housed the equivalent of a big city but it's crew consisted of 1,000,000 people. So it definitely housed millions, but billions is too much. Also throughout the games, it is pretty thoroughly elaborated that the Markers manipulate the minds of basically every human into serving them. The creation of Unitology as a religion is caused by that. People are obsessed with the Markers and will build them frantically no matter what happens. This can be seen at the end of Dead Space 3 as well when you move through the alien machine. It is filled with Markers everywhere. After all the lore explains that the Markers basically form a species into an advanced one that ultimately becomes spaceborne and desperate for resources at which point the Markers come into play. I mean you even understand the mind influence thing in Sin 42 and Danik even talks about that in the scene you show at Sin 82. Sin 61: Wrong. Santos dies by a Necromorph when that Giant Snow beast tears down that "elevator" that took them up the mountain. I mean you can be technically correct if you require physical contact between the human and the Necromorph with fatal wounds resulting from that physical contact but tbh that would be quite a workaround to keep the statement "Not a single person died to a Necromorph", don't you think? 👀 Sin 65: I wouldn't agree with that. What's true is that most enemies are simply a different form (like the Feeder being a changed form of the Pack that you encountered on Titan Station) however I would consider the Alien Necromorphs a new type because sure, Dead Space 2 has big Necromorphs as well but those were all put together human bodies. Those Alien Necromorphs tho are one huge Alien. Also, the Brethren Moon(s) is/are definitely a new Necromorph type and they only appear in DS3. So even if you don't consider the Aliens a new Necromorph type, the Brethren Moons are for sure a new type. Sin 73: If someone points a gun at your face, ready to blast your brains out it is not just justified but 100% OK to kill that person.

  • I would also like to add another sin after the 7:02 mark if you ever do an anniversary sin for this game: The opening plot with the Marker being freed on the moon is a massive plot hole. Issac never deals with it nor does anyone seem to despite the entire city going to hell. It even seems that the Lunar Colony is either as big or bigger than the Titan Sprawl in Dead Space 2, the same Sprawl which triggered its own convergence event. So yes, I am peddling my own fan theory that the Brethren Moons in the DLC were awakened not because of the events of Tau Volantis, but because Issac and company stupidly left an active Marker a skip away from Earth to do it’s business.

  • Personal Sin that REALLY just Irks the hell out of me. It's such a huge sin for me that I should have opened with it. So Carver's story up until this point is that he's an absentee husband and father who watched his wife and son gets shot by danik. He's chosen to continue his wife's Mission which was the catalyst that kicks off the events of Dead Space 3 in the first place.. He Spends the whole game with Isaac. Goes through hell with Issac, while battling his own inner demons with the loss of his wife and son.. He Protects Issac and supporting him, in both the killing of Norton by defending him against Ellie's accusations. And by helping him through his loss of Ellie after it's assumed that she's dead.. He even saves her life so that Isaac doesn't "let it all go dark" with survivors guilt. Now. I and a lot of people didn't like that, but it's what happens afterward that irks me. After all that, during the DLC. The developers use Isaac as tbe voice of the fans to straight up blame him for the Awakening of the brother Moon. I went back and rewatched that scene. If either Ellie or Isaac hand't stood around kissing and talking and standing, and instead pulled the Codex right back out, none of that shit would have happened. Isaac was just as to blame and Carver's weaksauce come back of "Oh yeah? Well fuck you." Does not do this sin justice. It's bullshit. It's the damned forced love story plaguing every orifice of this game! Remove it all together, and I would've enjoyed it a lot more.

Ellie's team came through there, before, so you're telling me none of them had a kinesis tool? They were out in the ass-end of space and no one had a kinesis tool? • Fun fact: 1. After evading Danik's shot on the moon, fall and awaken on top of pile of corpses, kill the necromorphs coming at you and then look up towards the hole you fell from. If you aim your gun to zoom your view, you can see that the glass roof covering on Danik's room before is already shattered (as in, not cracked, but totally shattered with few tidbits hanging on the borders) meaning Isaac is now exposed to space, but still live despite not donning his space helmet 2. After you jumped from the train into Eudora, as soon as Isaac is hanging on the ledge, if you played singleplayer, you can (very briefly) see Carver's leg model hanging on the right side of the screen before it disappear and Carver appear on the ledge to help Isaac up 3. 200 Years derelicts orbiting a planet should've plummeted down long ago since there's no stationkeeping to raise orbit and with the amount of debris there, the kessler syndrome caused should've destroyed the ships beyond any recognition, especially if you factor the mines 4. For sin 69, after you retrieve parts for probe gun and come back to the giant necromorph you need to probe, as soon as you meet Norton, you can see (very briefly) that he is contacting Danik using his screen projector before shrugging it as "it's nothing" as soon as Isaac asked him. It's still a sin though because right behind Norton is Santos, who's behind the desk after she gave you list of parts for the probe gun. With the way the communicator works in this universe, there's no way Santos wouldn't overheard Norton's exchange or saw Danik on Norton's screen

  • You do realize that you can dumb down the difficulty at any point in the game so that grinding for resources is easier? Go to the first chapter (not the prologue), grind on casual, done. It's not that hard. Also the first chapter is treated like a tutorial section, so it gives you certain supplies for free. 1:28 space may be big and despite being many worlds out there to crack open for resources, keep in mind that there's still a finite amount of resources planets can provide, and certain planets can be inhospitable for establishing colonies. Resources will run out. Not immediate, but eventually down the road. 2:46 it was later explained in this chapter's text log that Issac did move on from Nicole and tried a relationship with Ellie. They even pooled their funds to afford Ellie's new eye since Isaac owed Ellie a new eye from when Stross stabbed her in her original eye with a screwdriver. The whole "you owe me an eye, you bastard!" Was the reason. However despite trying to push past his encounters with the Markers, Issac was too broken, and Ellie couldn't be with him anymore. 3:32 Issac and Ellie were in hiding from EarthGov after Titan's station, hense the reason why they were both living in that small residential dorm to begin with. Also Issac- being an engineer- knew how to mask his RIG signal and at the same time intercept RIG communications. 4:10 Issac is called the "Marker Killer" for a reason. He still has the Marker Codes in his brain, he can read the Marker Language, and he knows how to destroy them. 5:43 GAME, not GAMES. You're mostly remember DS2, because from memory the first Dead Space game didn't have that shit. Also when Issac was "captured" by Kendra, she was revealed to be an EarthGov double agent, not unitologist. Also for context, she said "my department", not "the church", meaning she's not associated with either the Church or CEC. 6:12 what if it has and Issac has been researching it? Also Markers call out to people at close proximity. The Marker from Aegis 7 was dug up from the colonists, so they went crazy. Then the marker was transported to the Ishimura's cargo deck, so every crew member went crazy. My point is there has to be a set range for each Marker. Either way, it would all be moot since Issac is able to resist the Marker's influence. 7:17 *coughs* graphic novel and coop missions!! 8:58 well... shit, i got nothing. It doesn't even make sense storywise where Ellie found the time and money for a boob job within the 3 years she spent searching for the source of the Markers while avoiding Jacob Danik and the Circle. 11:14 even i have to agree. Despite Norton dating Ellie, Issac would agree with him on this. If the Sovereign Colonies have followed through with Serrano's plan, they wouldn't be having this Marker crisis. However at the same time, we wouldn't be having this series. 12:23 another valid point, especially since Issac's OWN MARKER back on Titan's station used Nicole as a means to lead Issac to the Marker and merge with him, completing the convergence event. However i will counter the Aegis 7 marker. It lead Issac to return the marker back to the planet, but consequently, the continent that was lifted by the Ishimura's gravity tethers was dropped on the Marker and destroyed it. That was something the Marker itself didn't expect to happen. 12:40 manipulating gameplay for the sole purpose of adding a sin. At a certain point because of all the debris, Isaac ordered Locke to give him a course correction. Granted, tensions were high, but did you want Issac to continue smashing through debris while entering the Ozone Layer of a frozen planet? 13:43 who would have been left alive to put the written data logs to use if Scenario 5 was suppose to kill off EVERYONE? Even if there were still survivors who refused to carry out the containment protocol, they would have eventually run out of supplies and either starve or freeze to death, never mind getting killed by Necromorphs. 14:53 close, but let me explain this one. Ellie TOLD Norton to get Issac safely to the group, she would become suspicious if Norton straight up didn't do it. I said close because after raising the cage and telling Ellie that he loved her, Norton should have blocked Issac's RIG, send the cage back down to the Nexus, THEN leave Issac behind. 16:08 you should have removed a sin for Carver's "Jesus, spare us the bullshit!" Because he already knew how all of this was gonna go down, so he wanted to get the bullshit talk over with. 16:20 you should have included that there were TWO guards along with Danik and Carver killed one of them, so what happened to the second guard? 16:37 no arguments here, that was metal as fuck what you did with Norton's body. Hell, i did that too. 18:16 Danik is trying to convert Issac so that he will throw down his cutter and accept his death. 19:49 dude, not a sin, because that's exactly what happened. You're just calling out the scene that's happening. 20:46 this wasn't just a simple matter of turning the codex. The aliens built the machine, but they didn't finish it, so pressed for time, they used the incompleted machine to freeze the planet and stop the convergence. Serrano's notes showed that the carvings on the walls were instructions for finishing the machine and THEN using the codex to reconfigure it. Hell, Issac spends an entire long as fuck chapter exploring the city, following Serrano's notes to finish the machine and reconfigure it. 21:06 would you have wanted the explosives cartridge to immediately blow up once installed? A timer is reasonable to give the demolitions specialist a window to run for cover once the explosive cartridge is set. 21:24 Issac has been blown up, slammed like a ragdoll, dragged by big fucking monsters, nearly eaten and dissolved in stomach acid, and survived a fucking shuttle crash, and yet you want a simple explosive to damage his helmet and kill him? Really? 22:18 another more acceptable sin would be that Carver has a clear shot for Danik's head since he's too focused on Isaac for having the Codex, not paying attention to Carver. Carver can just shoot Danik or catch him by surprise with a flesh wound, forcing him to lose his grip on Ellie, then Isaac can kill him. Done. There was literally no reason for Carver to do the stupid mistake of handing over the Codex, especially since we went through all 3 of Carver's coop missions to help him find closure, him accepting the consequences of his role in his family's deaths, and he himself stating that he was willing to pay any price to finish the mission his wife started as his chance for redemption.

  • The sad part is that Visceral, the franchise’s developer, was forced by EA to create the most basic and bland game as possible simply because Dead Space 2 made slightly less money than expected. Because of this, Visceral’s original vision for this third game, which was supposed to go even crazier in the psychological horror aspect (like 2 perfectly kickstarted) was essentially gutted just so EA could make try and snatch a few extra bucks with a basic and bland ass shooter game. Then, after this company forced game bombed, they closed down Visceral. Dammit EA

Dead Space had nothing to do with both of those games, I don't understand why people think they are similar games. But about micro transactions, it was published by EA who is known for being greedy so it is unfair to blame the franchise itself because of that.

    • @@SalvageET Well, the Devs of Dead Space themselves said in an Interview that they were heavily inspired by Resident Evil 4 when it came out and basically tried to make RE4 in Space. Besides that, I agree that blaming the franchise or Visceral for the Microtransactions is missing the point. • Missed a good few on this as there is also the start where the guy should of have already been knowing what the task was before taking the mission and knowing what to be looking for, otherwise he could have just may as well grab a jar to be thinking it's the thing the doctor is looking for. As there's more like why shoot the door just to open it, wouldn't that be pointless for a door to be there in the first place. Why had a fence there in the pilot cabin, it doesn't really look like it opens both ways infect how do they even get in there if there aren't any normal doors onboard. Why had a codex right there with them like that when it's the most important thing that has happened there, no wonder why they crash. Why had a rope on the door, last time I checked the cabin couldn't be having a door open to the outside during flight and I don't think they are planning to be jumping out of a moving plane. In Isaac apartment room you also forgot that for some reason Norton decided to take the photo of Ellie for no reason other than it to show in the very beginning he had a thing for her too and to show that he didn't like him as he never met Isaac before and has already begin to really be taken a disliking of him. If Danik was there as he is the most important man in the unitologist group, why bother to even be there when he could had been easily taken down be somebody with a good shot or just bad luck to be happening. Carver on coop play just suddenly appear without anyway for him to be right there next to Isaac as he was last seen on top and been shot at by Danik's men. Isaac having to go a long way in order to catch a ride that could have just been right there for them to just get into instead of that long pointless travel just to almost have the ship destroyed and at the end for them having to jump onboard right before they blast off into deep space and them still hanging on. Automatic transport to be never stopping and yet the area that allows a person to go into that area happens to have a door that leads you right into to it, better yet it's also wide open in the area that a person be working in behind the counter. Isaac and Carver to be not able to climb up or down platforms, guess they are that much of afraid of heights. As they are in the future and are a military kind of personal, they could have had the technology to how tell the difference in a satellite and a mine. They could have also been knowing during flight school that lesson number one is to never fly a ship in debris, when did they forget that lesson in class when they were trained to fly. Isn't me or did the ship just so happened to get larger in size, last I remember it wasn't that big to be walking around inside it or have all that space inside. For some reason they had decided to have cannon like guns built into a place that was really useless for them to be in, other than to just be used for shooting at dead creatures and gears. An elevator that only takes you to one side to the other and in the middle, it'll just be better to have a rising platform instead. All the important things for flight control and control of the ship to be located outside the ship, I don't have to be a genius but that'll be one mess up flight if that needs to be fix during the travel down to the planet. All but the main characters are to always die around them for the dumbest ways as one did where he decided to wait for Isaac at the elevator instead of going down into the basement to let him know more about what's happening. Scientist loving the things than to actually come into reality that she's on a dead monster ruled planet that wants to kill them and she keep changing her way of emotions about it. If Norton wanted to leave Isaac there to just thrown the key away so he too wouldn't be trap in the cage as well sense he need to still bring the whole thing back. The lady of scientist still thinking differently about and not still knowing how the creatures work as she still believes in them to be dead without taking notes that they can never stay down until you cut off their limbs. The scientist lady had many chances to jump off the elevator before it went down the cliff. Them to be having gas that eat your face, but they never use this anywhere else other than just on this planet and only in a type of area when this could have been spreading through the whole facility as well. Also that Isaac alone ends up being injured and all beaten up and bloody while Carver ends up still looking all good, why couldn't they just give him a bad look as well at the end with Isaac.

  • Not gonna lie, this is my fifth or sixth time watching this video over the years and I still love it. And yet the 1:28 sin just hit me harder than normally because of reflection. In Dead Space 2 there was even a solar power station that was essentially an energy death ray. Given that Titan is waaay farther from the sun than Earth, yet it can create a beam capable of melting heavy metals like butter, you would think that building solar stations around the planets or Dyson Spheres would be a practical option. That being said you could also argue that the Markers manipulated humanity away from renewable energy sources (like an alien Exon Mobile). Yet the amount of resources found in space would dwarf any consumption rates. And in Dead Space 1 it didn’t even seem like humanity was running out of fuel more than it was running out of any metal they could get their hands on. Note that this is a civilization that can rip entire planets apart for resources. Did they never once think of recycling and maybe try a different reactor other than Plutonium based fission?

  • I played through the game with a friend. I played as Isaac and my friend played as Carver. It was one of the best co-op experiences I've ever had! You see, when playing in co-op, Carver starts to have visions about his lost family. He hears voices (which he responds to) and sees stuff that Isaac doesn't. So certain cutscenes on my end looked like Carver was speaking to himself or grabbing and interacting with thin air. When you're approaching the end of the game, you finally realize that Carver was being influenced by a marker, and both Carver and Isaac manage to break Carver out of it. But there are dream sequences as well... Well, sort of. Where one player is having a crazy adventure while the other protects them against waves of necromorphs on the 'real world' as they bumble and thrash about the place. This type of asymetrical co-op should be more common IMO.
