Fifteen years after the creation of al-Shabaab in Somalia, terror still reigns and the reality on the ground just shifted more in their favor.
In a last ditch effort to leave a mark on foreign policy before his ouster, President Trump announced a drawdown of US troops in global hotspots around the world, including around 700 in Somalia. With no soldiers on the ground the plan promised to provide support through an already controversial and secretive drone program-which watchdog groups say has killed exponentially more civilians than the US admits.
VICE News travels to the frontline of Somalia’s war against al-Shabaab to see what the US pullout means for the next chapter in the war on terror.

A few years ago i got to know a young man (18y old back then) from Somalia whose family got killed by al-Shabaab when they raided his village. He left Somalia being 14y old and came to Germany all alone. Within 4 years he learned to speak german better than some people born in Germany and achieved his Mittlere Reife (2nd out of 3 possible school degrees in Germany). This guy was pretty impressive for his age and what he had to go through.

The person who wrote the subtitles definitely isn’t Somali, I’m a Somali and English speaker and more than half of what’s said by the soldiers is not put in the subtitles, and the translations that weren’t missed are not accurate. It seems like the translator understand certain words from the sentences and formed the some sentences by themselves, very poor representation

Just so you guys know, this is what true soldiers are like. Not the stuff you see in movies and Hollywood. People that have courage to take their lives for complete strangers of their country. They said it themselves, they don’t need American support. I have high respect for people like this and I wish all the children of our generation learned about foreign militaries this way.

I don't even know if I am heart broken or sad or angry about it. What I do know is that the intervention of such a conflict is happening needs to be rethought. Over 100 civilian casualties. Caused by a country that claims to have "long range precision weapons" I don't know about anyone else that they were not very precise.

Watching the way they cleared those rooms tells me they are not ready. I was on the EARF AFRICOM mission in 2018 and we trained a lot of these guys and lemme tell ya, it’s not easy. They’re motivated but they have a hard time learning.

I could tell that little girl was giving way more detail than the captions made it seem i wish I knew what she was saying.

Those guys had great answers to the reporters questions. Stating that any sane person knows that anyone who comes will someday leave. Also stating that they can defend their country just as well as us Americans. Nice to see that they realize we can’t stay forever and they must be willing to fight for their country.
That girl from the family of farmers is really telling the truth. Indeed the intention of the raids are to target Alshabab but in many instances the American drones kill innocent civilians and no one in Somalia or the US talks about such atrocities. I really cried with that poor girl. My heart bleeds for the innocent civilians caught in the line of fire.
People definitely talk about it but that's the nature of the situation sadly. Terrorist organizations are strong because they blend in with everyday people. They're not like gangs or cartels at all. They don't define themselves in any way to give you a target. It's picking a needle out of a haystack and by the time you find the needle there's a good chance you've lost your chance anyway. It's honestly part of the issue of entire populations being so uniform.
Al Shabbab are also Muslims.

That little girl’s story is so heart wrenching. And we have the audacity to take what we have for granted here in America and elsewhere in the world. Perspective is such a powerful thing to have. It absolutely broke my heart when she said America was to blame.
Some kid in Syria blamed Russia because it was a Russian helicopter that bombed his village. It literally doesn’t matter who did what when the end goal is to defeat terrorism/extremist rebels etc. and this is going for everyone including America

Gangland types like ISIS exploited this and built a sprawling terror network in the chaos. Interventions such as these, more than anything, are why we've been embroiled in conflicts in this region. And in any case, you have to ask why it's relevant to us at all. We aren't actually over there to fight terrorists. We really couldn't care less who is running these countries so long as they keep supplying us with rare earth minerals, diamonds and oil. It's all about money. But then you have to wonder, how much of the anti-Western extremism we're seeing is the direct result of ruthless exploitation of these countries by the West. It's a chicken and egg dynamic. You want to defeat terrorism using the same tools and imperialist activities that ultimately created it in the first place. Don't forget the CIA trained and supplied Al Qaeda for years before 9/11. So how do we defeat terrorism, ultimately? It's not a fight you can win with weapons alone. Really if you want radicalism to stop you have to stop giving these people reasons to radicalize and start giving them hope for the future. But this is at odds with our imperialist ambitions in these countries. It's kind of hard not to radicalize someone when you're bombing their homes. It's kind of hard to give someone hope when your main agenda is exploiting them. And so we fight. Just understand what that fight is really about and why the fighting never ends. And at the end of the day, it all boils down to money and control of resources. This has very little to do with ideology or the physical security of America's borders.
That little girl's story was heart wrenching and we Americans have the audacity to ignore our role in causing it.

Agreed, I do fw action and 2 chainz for comedic relief. But I don’t see how these are any harder to make except longer flights and some research on the topic. Probably wayyy cheaper since these guys want a smaller paycheck than a celebrity host.
