Thanks, David! They are wooden toothpicks and kabob sticks. I remove them before the clay starts to dry because clay shrinks as it dries. To avoid cracking, I twist them to carefully loosen and remove the supports and while the clay is still somewhat leather hard, I can fill and cover the holes before it dries and goes into the kiln.
That's exactly what I wanted to ask too :) How can you fill the holes later? With a fluid clay composition? I wish you had a slower version of the video, in the particular in the first part it is difficult to see your movements and learn from them
Davide Vadalà Thank you for your question. You must pull the wood supports out of the holes before the clay dries and shrinks too much or the clay will split and crack around the supports. I wait until the clay is stiff enough to support itself at a stage called leather hard, then twist to loosen and bull the supports out. After the wood is removed, you can just moisten the hole with water on a paint brush and fill the hole with a little clay plug. When the piece is copleted with the sculpting stage, I let it dry under a loose plastic cover for a few days and then let it air dry out in the open until it feels like chalk. Then I fire it at a 180 degrees for 24 hours, then I slowly fire it up to 1,800 degrees or 2,100 degrees depending on which clay type I'm using. Initially, I had just created this to show people/galleries/collectors/fans my general process. I had no idea it would get so many views and that people would be so interested. So now I'm making another video of another sculpture, am creating it differently, and can take time to show little details like this. I don't always know how I'm doing something, it just happens intuitively, and I was hesitant to make the video even longer by explaining things. Perhpas I can break things down into small lessons, if people are interested in that sort of information. This type of project is EXTREMELY advanced. I wouldn't attempt it unless you have a kiln you can fire slowly for 3-5 days and have had a lot of experience with ceramic clay/pottery.
the choice of music is not the best ( not thats it is bad: it is a good music ) but the speed of the movements witht the music can give nauseous feeling to some ppl. :)
I agree. I felt dizzy and had to turn off the sound. Too much movement in both visual and audio, one has to be slow.
I had to turn off the sound, too. (I thought it was only me!) Really loud and distracting, in contrast to the wonder of the video and act of sculpting. Otherwise loved the video. Thought about slowing it down and stopped halfway through to test that idea.
WOW! This is incredible! I cant even.. this is just.. wow!
