Royal Marines train to be 'mountain ghosts' in brutal Arctic terrain
Royal Marine Commandos have been training in the Arctic, with the set goal of becoming 'mountain ghosts', disappearing into the unforgiving environment.
Forces News joined the commandos in Norway as they prepared to take part in the Norwegeian-led Exercise Joint Viking - which involves thousands of military personnel from across Nato.
Major Matt Snook, Officer Commanding, Yankee Company, 45 Commando Royal Marines, said the personnel are "trying to disappear" in the Arctic landscape as they deal with two foes - the "actual enemy" and the harsh terrain.

I am thankful for having the Royal Marines here in Norway. Great soldiers.
An amazing force backed at home by useless politicians. As always.
@ jn yeah but Norway. Has great soldiers too great warrior's
Most of the world has great soldiers.. it's the extra few little bits that separate one another
If anyone can train them to be “mountain ghosts” to fight and life a long time in Arctic/mountain terrain it’s Norway.

Good news , now that Norway has lifted its long time rule that forbid permanent NATO standing forces in Norway where one was only allowed to bring in kit , conduct artic warfare training and annual exercises , and then leave , all change for the Royals. The UK has announced the opening of a military base in the far north of Norway near a newly-established Norwegian site, called Camp Viking, is located around 40 miles south of Tromso, near the village of Øverbygd. and will serve as a hub for Royal Marine Commandos to strengthen NATO's capabilities in the Arctic . Camp Viking will be strategically located next to a Norwegian Armed Forces base and near to the established air base at Bardufoss where the Commando Helicopter Force operates.
Our british brothers are always welcome
I’m an ex Bootneck from the late 70s - 80s, over the last 30 decades artic warfare training has been whittled down, Russia has never stopped being a threat to NATO, I hope MoD learns a lasting lesson from Putins aggression. Well done Royal.
Nato was made for Russia. Look at any "nato map" they literally highlight Russia in red to somewhat subliminally say "here's the enemy we want to kill". But if Nato is defence only, Russia should be neutral on those maps as it's simply not a member of nato.
@@ggoog1845 That's because Russia are a direct threat to NATO members. NATO only exists because Russia are a terrible neighbour, who have now proven that they are a threat, albeit a corrupt, incompetent one.
@G Goog just because NATO is defensive only doesnt mean there has to be no country marked in red.
@@jamesmccann531 well yes it does, can't you hear yourself? Why is a defensive alliance marking up enemies that haven't attacked them? Do you want Russians to die because nato are the good guys in your mind?

The ultimate "mountain ghost" was Simo Häyhä who never even used a scope in case it reflected in the light and gave away his position. They might be less freezing if they got merino wool as standard uniform.
How do you know they haven’t?
I heard a lot of people complaining about the cold and could see they were struggling to do things... oh wait, I didnt. Its almost like they may just have thought about temperature
The reason Häyhä didn't use a scope was that it tended to fog up all the time, and mounted above the iron sights would force him to stick his head up too much. Glares are just an afterthought.
The Scandinavians understand the necessity for merino thermals better than most.
Most of his kills were with a sub machine gun apparently
Your strong support is highly appreciated 🇳🇴
Your appreciation is humbleling.. we will always be right next to you
I don't understand why we(Denmark) doesn't have marines? Looking at a map, the fact we have a large merchant fleet and the developments in the Arctic.. It's doesn't make sense to me. Great video 👍
Marines are more of an abroad Offensive force. Denmark probably has more of a entrenched policy
@@kinkan5433 No.. Not at all. We have probably deployed more troops around the world than UK.. Over the last couple of decades. Per capita of course. We have finally created a light infantry battalion and is beefing up our SOCOM.
@@heinedenmark Setting up a marines service force is not easy and is a very expensive thing to do. The Dutch, British, French and US have the naval culture to allow them to function a marine based force. China claims to have 30000 marines but that figure is very doubtful. The US has about 200,000 with the UK having about 7000 of them. To put things into context Russia claims to have 12000 Marines but clearly does not have the naval culture to operate that number.
@@bighands69 I'm just thinking about a single marine infantry battalion. I think it's more relevant for us, than the single tank battalion we currently have. To support our maritime special forces, the Frogman corps. The Jaeger corps(SAS like unit), is getting their support battalion, in the light infantry battalion, we're currently developing. We have interest in the Arctic. We can't use tanks in that part of the world.
@@heinedenmark wait when did you last deployed to other countries, uk did more then Denmark ever have , uk better training and do security more then Denmark does

Cool
Respect, bet it took a lot of training to stop them randomly grunting and exposing their positions
your never cold on exercize thats for sure alwasy good to have all infantry units haveing the same exercises together not just Marines
depends on your force structure and specific tasks of each branch, here it is appropriate since it is not part of british strategic strategy to have a land war in the arctic against a major power.

Alicia, these snap shots of ‘look how great we are’ always looks so pretty, well organized and ship shape on exercise, stick these troops in the weeds / snow for six months then shoot your promo videos and talk BS to the camera. You need to give these elite troops more so they can sustain a campaign. You can start with a helicopter that can flare and land quickly. If you need convincing take a look at video footage of these boys in Afghan after 6 months of taking shxt.
Have you ever been on a chopper landing in snow, there is a point at which you cannot see a darned thing, to land quickly could be a major disaster with no depth perception, snow depth knowledge, etc
Hmm seems the Brits also not afraid of super cold snowy battlefield same as the 101st Airborne.

People always knock our armed forces , Too small too underfunded, Yet they must be doing something right. When you think. The last time we were invaded. Was 1066, Plus nearly every country Britain has been to war with thought the same, The Spanish empire and Spanish almarda probably said the same. Ow britain is too small with a small navy,. How did that turn out again, The french with Napoleon though the same thing, Then the nazis during the battle of Britain, Then the argintines taking British territory and thinking ow britain is to weak to do anything,. @@robshirewood5060 I would love to see some of these specialists in action, so far it seems to be Spetznaz cosplayers and untrained Russian cannon fodder. If the Russian military was able to take over Ukraine they would done it a long time ago, makes no sense to hold back all the best units for later.
But what about domestic drones, even military grade ones, they can spot every single man in the field. Ukraine is showing how the future wars will be fought. All those tricks and evasion and everything goes to s*** once is put up against that. It is time to take another step and figure out how to survive a silent drone attack.
The UK has anti drone technology!
Ukraine is not a good example to show the future of warfare it is very barebones with both sides using dates equipment most western nations have effective weapons to render drones useless a modern war would most likely be long range missile and bomb attacks and small groups like this operating behind enemy lines to take out key targets obviously I could be wrong but from my experience this is what it is looking like
People operating the drones have to be in the battle space as well. And drones like all other surveillance equipment can be tricked or used to perform a dummy manoeuvre.
