The eyes and ears of the UK's Commando Force

2023 ж. 14 Нау.

The Surveillance and Reconnaissance Squadron (SRS), primarily made up of Royal Marines from 30 Commando Information Exploitation Group, is dubbed the eyes and ears of the UK Commando Force.
Their focus is to gather information on the enemy and topography, so either larger amphibious forces can follow or lethal Royal Marine strike teams can carry out their operations.
It is not the role of SRS to be part of long firefights but they could come under attack, so it is important they practise getting out of an area and back to their boats as quickly as possible.

    • Special Air Service are land, sea and air, their name is a legacy relic going back to the second world war. Special Boat Service are supposed to be primarily sea/amphibious but the 2 overlap on most things these days. SBS can and do run around the desert and jungle simply because of that 90% overlap and they're often available. Special Reconnaissance Regiment were "sort of" supposed to undertake a specialism that would free up the SAS for other mission profiles and whilst they have facilitated that quite considerably, all 3 still conduct reconnaissance anyway but the types and ratios have been tweaked if you will. As someone else has said SRS isn't 'special forces' but they're basically special in practical terms, the UK has a lot of teams and groups that are for all intents and purposes special forces but aren't technically defined as such on paper. Pathfinder Platoon is always a good example of this.
