A close examination of Stan, Mae's father, with a focus on his role in the narrative. In particular, I'll be taking a look at his past as an alcoholic and his connection to his family's union roots.
MASSIVE shoutout to HunterTrophyHunter for allowing me to use his footage of the moment where Mae gives her dad the tooth for this video! You can check out all his content at the link below!

  • Stan is that dad I wish I had, at least how he is in the game. I think he tries his best and of course is struggling, but the talking with him and watching Garbo and Malloy each night is a nice part of the game.

    • I totally agree! It's a very nice part of the game and is a great way to end each day! He definitely tries his best and has come a long way after all the struggles he had when Mae was younger!

  • as someone from a similar background as Mae, who has a dad that is a former alcoholic, this game struck deep for me. Now, when I join my dad on the couch, it'll be even more special!

    • Thank you for sharing this - I'm sure this game really hit home for you in light of all the similarities. Hope your dad is doing better now, and I'm glad to hear that this video has helped make the time you spend with him even more special!

    • @@owlbatross9187honestly, I really like every video you put out! I've played the game in full 3 times, along with the supplemental games, and I never once stopped to question any of the points you bring up in your videos - so they're truly fascinating to me. I'm obsessed with the franchise, so having new ideas to think about in the context of its world is a delight!

  • Another amazing video as always! Your in depth analysis on every character is always a joy to watch/listen to for someone who loves NITW as much as I do. I loved how you pointed out that watching TV at the end of Stan's work day could be a replacement habit and how Mae spends time with him to watch TV is her subtle way of supporting him. As some who struggles with mental illness and chemical dependency/former alcoholism your take was very respectful and informative, so thank you! I look forward to every video and will support anyway I can! Keep up the awesome work!

    • Thank you for the amazing comment, and thank you for being willing to share your own struggle with mental illness and chemical dependency. Whenever I cover a topic like this, I take a lot of time trying to make sure I address the issue as sensitively and respectfully as possible, so it's great to hear that I did a good job on that front. The replacement behavior bit is definitely one of my favorite recent discoveries about the game - particularly because my day job includes a lot of behavioral analysis, so it was fun to see that crossover into this video haha. Thank you for your continued support, so glad you've been enjoying the videos!

  • In a way, Stan is more like my mom than how my dad was (who would get more involved with me, but was ever rarely home due to having to work in different states). My mom works, comes home, and watches TV. I love and appreciate her very much, and try to spend as much time with her as I can, but it can be hard to connect to someone that isn’t super involved in your life. However, lately, I’ve gotten her to help me with realism art for horses, as that’s her specialty, which has made me more open into showing her my art in general. Even if it doesn’t seem like much, I know these little moments mean a lot to both me and my mom.

    • Thank you so much for sharing this! It's good to hear that you and your mom have been able to bond more lately over art. Moments like that with our parents are always incredibly meaningful!

  • Great video as always I guess I never really know how much deep Stan really is a character but I’m very glad that he has great daughter like mae to help him recover from drinking I definitely have to give it mae even though she is a trash mammal she definitely has two great parents as always keep up the great work 😁

    • Thank you my friend! I always look forward to your comments! Stan definitely is a pretty deep character, though I have to admit I didn't realize just how deep he was until I got to work on this video. He sure is lucky to have Mae around! You're totally right - she might be a trash mammal, but she has some great parents - and I'll be covering her mom next month!

  • This really does recontextualize those nightly hang out in a good way. I always just made a point of watching the show with him, even on my replays, because why not. But I never really thought about tying it so directly into the wider themes. I just looked at it as mostly further exploring the idea of family and parental relationships, just as the other side of the coin to Mae's mom (which I'm sure you probably have ideas on a video about how that relationship is also deeper than I could have considered lol). Great videos as always

    • Thank you so much for your continued support! Yeah, it really does recontextualize those nightly segments in a really interesting way. I'll definitely be viewing them in a far different light on my next playthrough! Mae's mom is up next! I definitely have some ideas on how that relationship is deeper than we think it is, and I can't wait to share them next month!

  • Oh my god... That "holding the bottle" position makes too much sense. I always looked at Stan as regular dad but this changes entire context. Also Mae really badly holds alcohol as we see at the "nightmare eyes" party. If Stan is even half as bad at it as Mae is then he is 100% a danger to everyone around him.

  • Stan is like my dad my dad is also a recovering alcoholic except my dad enables my mom's emotional abuse towards me then and now and I'm also like may whose a college drop out that lost most of her friends in college and is lost in life and is the black sheep of the family I related to the game so much when I first played it that I litterly cried like a lot more than I like to admit throughout the whole game I want to get mae tatted on me at some point bc of how much this game means to me u think like a game can't be there for u when things are shit but that's not true cuz this game and my partner were really the only ones there for me when things were (and still are tbh but I'm getting there) shit in my life like it felt like my life in the past years few years had been written into this game that's how much I could relate like this game was written just for me in that moment in time this game means the world to me bc it made me feel less alone in my struggles

    • Thank you for sharing all of this. I'm sorry to hear about your dad's alcoholism and your mom's emotional abuse, that's terrible and had to be difficult to go through. I'm glad to hear Night in the Woods has been there for you through all of it, though. Honestly, it's the same way for me and a lot of the community. I related to the game instantly because Mae dropped out of college around the same point that I very nearly did myself, and I talk to people every day who feels like the game, in some ways, told their story, in a similar way to how you feel about it. It really speaks to the game's incredible writing and narrative design that so many people can relate to it!

  • Owblatross, I have DID (Dissociative Identity Disorder) and I don't think Dissociative Personality Disorder is an actual term, Mae seems to be suffering from general dissociation, no form of alters

    • Hey there! Thanks for the heads up - I actually received a similar comment around the time I published this video and I've been working to use the correct terminology moving forward. I apologize for the mistake, and you are absolutely correct - she seems to be suffering from general dissociation, not dissociative personality disorder, which is indeed not an actual term!
