We've Got HALF A ROOF! (Off Grid, Alaska)

2022 ж. 9 Мау.
77 620 Рет қаралды

Well winter has finally tucked it's tail between it's legs and headed further north. The alder bushes have turned green overnight, and we are starting to see some open water around the edges of the lake. We are here for it! We have another weekend (or two) of roof framing before we can install the finished roofing. So much to do in this short summer.
Well my first Wednesday video release didn't happen as planned. I thought I had it scheduled to release automatically but apparently I did not. No worries, I will try again next week. I am wanting to share our summer activities with you (besides this building project), and am envisioning a less formal, short-video style series, similar to my TikTok channel content. It think you will enjoy it.

  • Teach your children the way they should go and when they are old they won’t stray from it…Gale and Tanya, you are really good teachers. Leading by example. 💕💕

  • My late oldest brother was a carpenter for 50 year's, most of his working time was heavy duty roofing construction, he was on so many site's over years even the new gymnasium at my collage as I was there, his worst accident was falling down 3 story's on a 15 story contract, when I watch you working so hard and efficiently on the roofs it reminds me of my brother, and I see a young apprenticeship on the other, 😊😊.

  • Here comes a new adventurous video from Alaska. How different everything is without snow. The work progresses, the sun warms, the helpers increase, Stella is always with us, and Tanya does very well to demand the dangerous siesta. Thanks for sharing and waiting for the salmon, we greet you all from Italy😎🇮🇹😊

    • Sinbad, right!!?? Why isn’t the siesta part of every culture!? The cheese puffs were an epic fail but that’s what I get- they were on sale 2 for 4$ and now we know why 😂. Thank you so much for the kind comment, it means more than you know. Have a blessed and beautiful week. 🥰

  • Good Morning Gale, Tanya and Family - Wow, the snow is almost gone! The area is starting to look totally different. Wide open beautiful vistas for as far as the eye can see. Bright sunshine to light your way. I can see why you love this part of your great state of Alaska. More progress made on the shop. Thank you for recycling the available wood and taking such great care of the environment. As rugged as Alaska is, I know the environment is still very fragile. Thank you for another great episode. It is always such a great way to start a Friday morning. Take Care - Stay Safe. Regards, Randy in Arizona (100+ degrees every day for next 8 days)

  • That was a lot of fun in that video what with the Cheesy Puffs and the Condiments. Oh, and the siesta. Just love the way you two are with each other and now with Tom and Lilly? SO great to see and also the careful work in disposing of non-reusable material from the cabin sites. Lots of extra work in that but your work ethic and the tidiness of it all is really appealing to this OCD-burdened guy. I came in from my garden to have lunch (mind you it was 15:00 here and I had been outside for 5 hours) - I like to get stuff finished and I really like to celebrate with a cup of coffee!

  • It's great that you are re-using the things that you can. Growing up here in the Appalachian Mts. we were taught to reuse everything we possibly can. It was passed down through our parents and grandparents who lived through the depression, when life was really hard here. I guess you could call us the original recyclers. Not only is it cost effective, but it saves our trees and natural resources. Everything is beginning to look like summer for ya'll. It's such a beautiful place where you are. Glad you will be getting some mustard and ketchup. LOL...that was too funny! I am with Tanya that you always look for the best deal! And I am right there with her on the siesta. A nice afternoon nap makes me a much better person..lol. Seeing Tommy is definitely a glimpse of what Drox will look like when he is older! Hope ya'll have a great week! Take care and God bless!

    • Cathy, you are so right about the benefits of recycling. Loved hearing about your roots. Things are getting green in our mountains, finally and we’re hoping that within the next 2-3 weeks the snow/ice will be off of the lake. It is very late in going this year. We were glad for the mustard and ketchup but sadly, the mustard did not fare so well after being frozen all winter, lol. We managed to survive with just the ketchup 😊. A resounding YES to a nap making me a better person! I’m trying to get Gale to understand that 😂. It is always great to hear from you, we feel so fortunate to have such a faithful friend. Thanks so much for the kind word. Take care! ~Tanya ❤️

  • I saw your post and said to myself, "holy smokes! It's Friday!" Immediately clicked, of course. I enjoy watching while having my morning tea. A question for you, if you don't mind. What happens to all the construction debris? Is any of the dimensional lumber or tin roofing reusable? I'm with you, Tanya, those first days of sunshine are delicious. If I remember, in the last video, you hummed with happiness ...! EDIT: i asked my question before your discussion at end. I should watch the whole thing...

  • It's great seeing how you reuse a lot of material and I really appreciate how each tool you use has multiple purposes; I can see the Alaskan people know how to approach a situation with tools/supplies at hand and make it work!! Also...I love how the word "hot" has different meanings depending on where you live. 50 degrees in Alaska or 90 degrees in Florida... I have friends down here in Florida installing solar panels on roofs in the heat of the summer day with +70% humidity. I don't know how they do it.

    @dieselrugg@dieselrugg Жыл бұрын
  • Don't forget all the money that is not wasted throwing recyclable material away. It's always a good idea to reuse as much as you possibly can and save the money to put it toward the things, that will make life so much easier. Roof is looking good.

That is to say that when you love the environment around you, you want to preserve as much or it as possible. That means the history, as well as, the environment. For instance when you found the sign for the old rentals. Some might say sell it or trash it. But you said you wanted to somehow incorporate it in to the new buildings... Appreciate your journey and glad you brought me along.

Watched the video before this one, but didn’t comment because I had some surgery and writing a comment while on pain medication wouldn’t workout very well. In the last video you guys had a real look of focus on your face to get to work and hit it hard and you did another great job preparing for the new roof install. Gail it does seem that you are 100% after your fall. Smart to reclaim as much as you can instead of hauling it away. Tanya, I think you need to get Gail to put a small sand beach in front of the cabin and pond so you have a place to siesta and soak up the sun. Thank you for sharing. Be safe my friends

One of our goals for this summer is to clean the place up and get all the trash hauler back to the landfill 165 miles away. It will take many trips. We also hope to get a portion of this old shop torn down and hauled away. So glad you are enjoying the book. It is such a great read and historical very accurate. • Glad to see you had a little help today Gale. Tanya really wanted a good nap today 😂 Stella wanted no part of those cheese puffs, they had to be really bad! I can’t believe you still have snow on the ground, unbelievable! Making progress slowly but surely! If you could just burn all of that in a big pile would sure safe a lot of time, but I guess that’s why Alaska is so beautiful! Great work as always. Looking forward to the next video! ✌🏼❤️🙏🏼🦴

  • I know this is a lt to take in, but if You were to put in a heated runway (solar heated that is) You could land Your plane there instead of that airport You went to. This would make a shorter trip for You.

  • I love watching from Florida 🤣😂 it makes me warm inside seeing the two of you work together my wife and I have been married for 31 years and the last thing we could do together is rebuild a house. My wife would have done the same thing bring some awful tasting vegan puffs so I sympathies with your pain for a snack that is unhealthy but tastes delicious 🤣😂 your videos make my week. My bucket list is calling me to visit Alaska and watching you two makes me yearn for it, just waiting for my new tow vehicle so I can upgrade my trailer and go. Blessing to you both and thanks for such enjoyment, btw I would have done the same trying to persevere as much of the structures as possible.

  • Y'all make it look easy. It's in the 90's here in Northern California so what's left of your snow looks inviting. Good to see you bringing in the varsity helper to do the roofing And I totally agree with Tanya regarding the siestas.

  • Hello my friends!! Very nice video, I couldn't wait for tomorrow to see it, so I'll find some old video to watch and not break the tradition of Saturday! I also wondered if it wouldn't be better to demolish and build everything new, but now I understand why you didn't. Those helpers did a great job, but Tanya... no "siesta" at work!! hehe As always thanks for your videos and see you next week!! Hugs for all!! Alex from Argentina.

  • Great video as always ! Glad you’re getting some sun and warmer weather finally ! “ I’ll pretty much eat anything “ lmao. Happy to see that half of the roof closed in too. Definitely makes more sense to basically remodel what’s existing and reuse the materials you can in a lot of situations but especially being so remote AND with the ridiculous lumber and sheeting prices ! 😳take care G&T ✌️
