Part One: Alex Jones: The Godfather of Fake News | BEHIND THE BASTARDS
Alex Jones has been banned from Facebook, Twitter, the App Store and pretty much every other mainstream app that is capable of somehow spreading information. In Episode 22, Robert is joined by Noel Brown and Benjamin Bowlin (Ridiculous History and Stuff They Don't Want You To Know) and they discuss how Alex Jones became an architect of modern conservative media.

There’s a reason the History Channel has produced hundreds of documentaries about Hitler but only a few about Dwight D. Eisenhower. Bad guys (and gals) are eternally fascinating. Behind the Bastards dives in past the Cliffs Notes of the worst humans in history and exposes the bizarre realities of their lives. Listeners will learn about the young adult novels that helped Hitler form his monstrous ideology, the founder of Blackwater’s insane quest to build his own Air Force, the bizarre lives of the sons and daughters of dictators and Saddam Hussein’s side career as a trashy romance novelist.
New episodes twice a week on iHeartRadio.

  • One of the funniest things about Alex Jones is how he keeps saying "we don't have time to get into it" about everything before launching into a "rant" which is mostly just him screaming "they're going to kill us2 or "they are eating children" for like 15 minutes.

  • oh with the Obama hate... I distinctly remember seeing conservative people hating on Obama before he even took office. He had that "D" by his name so all the Republicans immediately hated him. I distinctly remember someone I served with in the military posting a long rant about how Obama had made all these promises and why wasn't he carrying them out... and it was in Dec 2008, a month before Obama was inaugurated. It didn't matter that he wasn't actually president yet and couldn't actually do anything... they just. fucking. hated him. Oh and it wasn't really a race thing because the person who posted the thing I just mentioned is a black woman. The same thing happened with Biden. They hated him the instant he won the election. And that hatred has only grown since then, despite that he hasn't really done much, and has largely stuck with Trump's policies, with a few exceptions (the one that comes to mind being the student loan forgiveness stuff, which to be fair is pretty big).

  • I once decided, while writing a story with a character who's a conspiracy theorist, that I would watch a bit of an Alex Jones video. I figured it would be good research. Now, he claims to do 'news' and while I didn't necessarily go into it looking to see what he had to say, I go into anything with an assumption that someone might bring something of value. If I didn't, I wouldn't have started to see how all these kooky leftists have a point about things, and would still be a #Edgy Libertarian/Tech-Bro acolyte type. It just so happened that the video was talking about a recent Superbowl, in which (he claimed) the New England Patriots cheated. Now, I don't know if they did. I do know they have been accused, somewhat credibly, of less-than-savory tactics, so maybe they did. And maybe Mr. Jones, being a man who is always on the lookout for hidden things, might have seen something that I didn't. I watched maybe two or three minutes, in which he accused them of cheating by... Timing out the snap count. Now, that is not reading signals. He did not even CLAIM they read signals. Or anything of the sort. What he accused them of doing was just... Figuring out how long the other team's quarterback usually takes to hike the ball. Something that not only is not against the rules, and is encouraged, would require some sort of Harrison Bergeron technology to prevent. He accused a team of cheating for having basic observational skills. Despite what he thinks, it is not illegal for football players to watch football, particularly if the football they are watching is a game they are in. Within a few minutes, I was fully inoculated against anything else this man had to say. Which may have helped me avoid falling into any conspiracy theories, which is good, because I tend to have a mind so open that you never know what might fall in. However, I did need to find a new person to base my character on...

  • 17:30 I want what these guys are smoking, because honestly, this Jones sounds even worse than the current one. Yea, sure, current Jones is technically worse in that his "polished" presentation better obfuscated his political conspiracies, but the thing these three guys are glazing Jones over here is... him going on an incel rant about being trolled by a crank phone caller in the 90s? "He doesn't sound like he's bought into his own Kool-Aid yet" he's screaming at a random caller, saying he loves Bill Clinton and the NWO because he's laughing. That sounds way more like buying into his own hype than the Alex Jones using a funny goblin metaphor to defend Trump on his pretend anti-authority show.

  • A surprising amount of support I have encountered in real life multiple times for Jones actually comes from a lot of the more extreme Left and this is really something that I think content creators like Robert sometimes get into but then kinda whiff on. And I understand why somewhat. On a practical level when the Jones or Jimmy Dore tupes had any kind of legitimate support or interest from any considerable number of Lefties was a long time ago now. I mean, A SCANNER DARKLY was 2006 people. Still I think a dive into how the Tim Poole and Alex Jones of the world went SO off the rails after getting a lot of their early juice from disaffected Lefties needs some serious rather than fascile analysis.

    • In the 00s, Congress was united on an obviously ruinous and pointless War on Terror. Critical members of society could easily point to the consensus that existed on both sides. Wacko conservative pols like Santorum were considered kooks. But the Left was interested in using that criticism to push for reform, and the Right was using that as criticism to find “enemies” to distract from worsening conditions. By 2016, politics had shifted to a domestic focus. The right had listened to the fringes and dumped their legacy pols for tea partiers, and could no longer point to external enemies. Since the point is distracting voters by blaming culprits - not actually fixing things - they needed to start looking for scapegoats inside the country. That looks like the nutso witch hunts we see today.
