    • He's another ten years to go yet. Sir Stanley Matthews was still playing in what is now known as the Premier League when he was 50.

    • @@stephenhodgson3506 Can't really compare football back then with the sport as it is today. Back then it was essentially an amateur sport.

      @jordanschlansky4093@jordanschlansky40932 жыл бұрын
    • @@jordanschlansky4093 You can more than compare it. With the advances in sports science players have better dietary control, they have different fitness regimes and they play on much better surfaces. Add to that much of the physical aspects of the game have been removed. You see it in all sports where players play much longer. Compare that to the pitches people like Matthews had to play on, the physical aspect of the game where the tackle from behind was legal. Where substitutes did not exist and cup games could go to multiple replays. Where fielding a weakened side resulted in fines. For a player to reach the age of 50 back then was much harder than a player getting to 35 nowadays.

      @stephenhodgson3506@stephenhodgson35062 жыл бұрын
    • @@stephenhodgson3506 Yet the competition is a lot tougher, the games faster and the supply of professional players alot more. You dig Matthews, I get it. But objectively speaking the game isn't the same. Hell most players back then didn't even have football as a full time job.

      @jordanschlansky4093@jordanschlansky40932 жыл бұрын
    • @@jordanschlansky4093 You say the competition is a lot tougher but because there was a wage cap the talent was spread evenly throughout the leagues. There was no have a week off because I want to rotate the squad. In 1965 the Christmas schedule had Liverpool playing Leeds at Anfield the Leeds playing Liverpool at Elland Road the following day and the same sides were put out for both games. Even with the squads they have today the managers would have been up in arms complaining. As for toughness there is nothing remotely close to the level of physical contact today compared to back then back then. Then you look at the quality of pitches that they were playing on. As for your final comment most players even with the wage cap were earning well above the average wage so had no need for a second job and as they were expected to train every morning and rest in the afternoon they were unable to hold a second job. That statement alone shows how much you know about football back then.

  • Honestly, Zlatan is the last showman in top flight professional football. The amount of swagger and confidence along with his ability to consistently score aerodynamic goals is something a lot of current young and experience footballers are either afraid or can rarely do. Zlatan is a living highlight reel. I hope we get more players that can put on a show just like the past greats such as R9, Ronaldinho, Maldini, drogba etc.

    @John-gv2ug@John-gv2ug2 жыл бұрын
    • Spot on. Combining his height, technique and mental attributes and his physique, versatility, strength, agility and pace when he was young is really rare. • A story from that night: I was there with my father, the day of zlatan’s bicycle kick against England. It was a big day for sweden as it was the inaugural of the new arena “friends arena”. We were sitting with the Swedes because we live in Sweden. But my dad is from England and has brainwashed me my whole life to always cheer for England no matter what. We had been given the VIP tickets for the game though dad’s business pals, so the night was long and well anticipated. It was a dinner and speeches before hand at the new arena. My father and I have never been more smug. We throwing banter in every “important” Swede’s direction. We knew we where going to crush sweden that night. Oh my god how excited we where, and how much everybody else hated us as England put the two first goals in the net. We were jumping and screaming amongst the silent VIP Swedes up in the stands. Then zlatan happened. We were completely ridiculed by dads business associates. We went out to find a cab after that goal. We were crushed. We never really talked about that night again.

Though he combines many of the traits of that golden team. Works hard like Davids, technique in his shots like Bergkamp, dribbling like Kluivert, which he might even be better at. And a streetball player besides with taekwondo skills to boot. That is actually one of his defining attributes, he brought a lot of streetstyle plays and tricks onto the pitch.

    • @@MarkSmith-er7fe do you understand English? Zlatan doesn’t get talked about in the same sentence as CR7 and Messi when he is arguably better and more entertaining, which is supposedly what football is about.
