  • What is your strategy against Wrestlers?

    • Try to keep them off of you. If you can't, pull guard. Pulling guard will probably result in disadvantage or a loss, but it's better than them tossing you on your neck. If you last long enough, maybe their explosiveness will tire them out... but that's not for certain. Many of them are absolute metabolic machines. Even as a full-on BJJ guy, I think their art is overall superior for pure big boy combat. However, BJJ is a lot safer to practice, so I stick with that exclusively. Ideally, a practitioner knows both and also prays that in the process of learning wrestling his knee doesn't get snapped in half or his neck or spine broken. This is the reality of the sports as I know them. Having nothing but respect for wrestlers - and giving them a wide berth - is the best policy, imo. I know that maybe this is a hot take in the BJJ community, but on the other hand, it has kept all of my joints and ligaments fully functional. *knock on wood*

  • I love your videos. However if the last few have been Green screen something seems off. The normal backgrounds look way better with less digital removal on the people.

  • I'm a BJJ black belt and high level college wrestler (almost 90% W/L ratio). These tips more apply to nogi because leg attacks aren't usually legal until brown belt in gi. Also, everyone tries to choke wrestlers early on so they get good at defending chokes as shot counters by upper blue to purple belt and you can lose position trying the choke if it's not there. The knee shield comment is pretty legit that can be a frustrating guard to deal with if they guy is really good at using it but that usually won't win you the match it can just keep the score close so you can win with a well timed advantage if you manage to pull without getting taken down. The problem with it is people gravitate to these techniques and the wrestler gets good at dealing with them because they spend so much time on the mat working on them. Mentally people are getting too frustrated that a blue belt is giving them so much trouble when in reality this is a person with 15 years of experience grappling that no one is giving them credit for. They've even learned how to learn new positions quickly. A blue belt D1 wrestler is a lot like a black belt with giant holes in their BJJ game that they're plugging.

    • leg attacks are legal from white belt on in the gi with the straight ankle lock. I used to get that a lot on wrestlers back when I was even a blue belt. The entanglements to get there, even for a straight ankle locks are intricate enough to confuse beginner wrestlers.

    • So a blue belt D1 wrestler is basically a mid brown belt?

  • Best advice: wrestle him and learn from him. That said, over the past 5 years of training, being a middle aged 165lb dude, i agree with this guy. Although i usually end up pulling guard during a scramble with wrestlers, so i focus on guillotines, box chokes, collar chokes etc. If the guy is really good and kicking my but, I'm hunting a straight ankle and it better get a reaction fast or some wrestlers won't tap. Not really supposed to heel hook white belts but that and kneebars would be great.
