On Friday, April 8 at 11:17 a.m. ET, Falcon 9 launched Axiom Space’s Ax-1 mission, Dragon’s fifth human spaceflight to the International Space Station, from historic Launch Complex 39A (LC-39A) at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Following stage separation, Falcon 9’s first stage landed on the droneship, A Shortfall of Gravitas, which was stationed in the Atlantic Ocean.
Axiom Space’s Ax-1 mission is the first all-private human spaceflight mission to the International Space Station. The Ax-1 crew will participate in educational outreach and conduct innovative research experiments while on the orbiting laboratory.
Live webcast coverage will resume approximately two hours before docking, which is targeted for 7:45 a.m. ET (11:45 UTC) on Saturday, April 9. Follow Dragon and the Ax-1 astronauts’ flight to the International Space Station below.

  • At 3:32:30 in the stream (T+5:24) you can see a couple pieces of frozen oxygen resting on the turbine exhaust scroll. Because the oxygen flashes directly to vapor in vacuum, the chunks are suspended on a cushion of vapor that insulates them from the nearly-glowing heat of the scroll. The ice pieces can be seen moving slightly as the engine vibration and gimbaling jostles them. I think they are made by evaporation at the exit of the LOX bleeds from the interpropellant seal that prevents LOX and RP-1 mixing on the turbopump shaft. These pieces of O2-ice are the usual source of irregular objects often seen floating near the booster on its way to re-entry.

  • Droneship camera was hooked up to a star link satellite, thats why the landing looks so great. When its not, the connection comes from the coast which is too far for a stable connection, which is why the landing will often disconnect.

  • Love the fact that the Falcon 9 is just so damned reliable that customers are ok with human launches on a rocket that's already gone up a few times. just the kind of thing SpaceX has been aiming for all along

    @MrGoesBoom@MrGoesBoom2 жыл бұрын
    • Initially customers may have been nervous about sending stuff up on a reused booster, but by now it's probably "Would you like to use this booster that's already successfully put stuff into orbit five times or a brand new booster that's never flown before?"

    • The launch schedule Falcon 9 has been able to accomplish is the kind of schedule NASA envisioned for the space shuttle.

      @Trainlover1995@Trainlover19952 жыл бұрын
    • @@Trainlover1995 That’s an apples to oranges comparison. Falcon 9 is a rocket. The shuttle was a spacecraft. If you compare the shuttles to the Crew Dragons, they launched far more often than their SpaceX counterparts. At least, to date. 4 Crew Dragon flights are scheduled for 2022 and at least 5 flights are on tap for 2023. In contrast, the shuttles launched up to 9 times a year, at their peak.

    • @@thomashong2938 I’m talking about the Falcon 9 in general, not just Crew Dragon launches.

      @Trainlover1995@Trainlover19952 жыл бұрын
    • @@Trainlover1995 To do the 30+ Falcon 9 launches that SpaceX did last year, NASA would have needed far more than the four shuttles that they had in their fleet. Maybe 12 to 15 space shuttles and the building of multiple additional launch pads at KSC and Canaveral.
