The Intense Dogfight Between a U.S. Pilot and an Iraqi MiG

It's January 1991, during Operation Desert Storm, and a USAF pilot is in trouble. An Iraqi MiG has locked onto his plane and is preparing to take him down. The next decision he makes will have to be perfect - or it could be his last.

From the Show: Air Warriors: MiG bit.ly/2M3vrFA
You can joke about the Iraqi pilot, but he was a fighter pilot too, and he was fighting for his life.
Steven Zore...true, but he was totally outclassed in terms of training, avionics, AWACS, the plane...the Iraqi pilot didn’t stand a chance...
woodystorey I think you're missing the point.
I agree, their governments actions led to this but at the end of the day, they were both pilots doing their duties. The Iraqi pilot doing his best with what he had, and the US pilot with loads of training behind him just coming into action. Both being fighter pilots, they both probably had a lot in common, war is messy.
Sucks when you're playing for the Browns and the Patriots show up in town.

Don't forget Naval Aviators as well!
just imagine the G's you experience like that Iraqi pilot
Insane reaction time; undiagnosed adhd usually
Same requirements for a f1 driver; have to be at peak performance all the time and have neck muscles capable of handling the force of gravity fighting you
@@codypk5111yeah but F1 doesn’t encounter the same amount of G forces which can be up to 9-10 for fighter pilots.
Even tho I am American I honestly feel bad for the Iraqi pilot, that was someone son trying to defend their country. RIP man.
Both you are right. However, those Iraqis you feel so bad about had also just invaded Kuwait without provocation before we got involved. War is disgusting, I know first hand unfortunately.

AIM-7 is not heatseeking, it's passive radar and is used in combat when friendlies are around. It requires for the shooter to maintain lock until impact
Yes, although they are obsolete and no one uses them. The f15 in the video probably carried the AIM-120 AMRAAM instead
@@Shadow27Titan well at the time they weren't uncommon and a FOX 1 style missle would have been perfect for that engagement in my opinion as the bandit is in close proximity to friendlies. With a fox 3, like the aim-120, when the missle goes pitbull it has the chance of getting confused and will lock onto the target in front of it at the time. With a FOX 1 the wingman could keep an STT lock all the way to target.

Being a fighter pilot has to be one of the scariest things I can imagine, not to mention its probably hard af too. I have huge respect for those dudes, I get nervous just flying in general.
People get scared of forces on roller coasters and I just can’t imagine those forces like 2x harder and fighting for your life
@@Xgarfr2 to even 12 times the forces. I say 12 as there was a training incident where a pilot of an f15 blacked out from a prior maneuver and his jet went nose down with full power, he woke up saw the ground and pulled for all he had. Lucky he woke when he did and the pilots with him that day say he pulled 10-12 Gs.
Counter IED patrols would argue that the fighter jocks do not have the hardest job.

The second MiG pilot was already dead the moment he ended up in a 2 on 1 situation, the fact that he attempted to perform such a dangerous maneuver shows the desperation of the pilot to evade the F-15s, and honestly hats off to him for trying, you need some serious balls to be trying air show like maneuvers in combat, cause no flares or jinking would had saved him from that situation. I see a lot of people mocking the pilot, I see a lot of people actually treating the pilot with respect, I can't say anything but how joking around about the enemy like that just shows how much we've dehumanized them, it's just childish.

@@critik4l169 don't dehumanize the enemy, it could backstab you in the end.
There was an Egyptian MiG-21 pilot who attempted a Split-S at only 3,000 fight in a desperate bid to evade a pursuing Israeli Mirage III. According to the Israeli pilot, the MiG-21 threw up an enormous plume of sand/dust as it neared the ground and, for a moment, the Israeli lost sight of the aircraft (thinking perhaps it had struck the ground). Amazingly, the MiG emerged from its enormous cloud of sand and, pulling through the maneuver with bare feet (if not mere inches) to spare it rocketed skyward. Unfortunately for the Egyptian MiG, the Israeli had anticipated his position and positioned his own aircraft for a shot as the MiG lost energy near the top of its maneuver. As far as the Split-S maneuver was concerned, perhaps the Egyptian MiG-21 pilot had succeeded where the Iraqi MiG-29 pilot failed. It's not fully apparent that the MiG-29 pilot was trying to pull a Split-S, however, he could have just as easily been suffering threat fixation and been overly focused on what was on his six as opposed to the altitude left under his aircraft.
f-15s are whack.

speed, aerobatics, and turning have always been the basics of dogfighting. dogfighting, or "basic" fighter maneuvers center around getting your nose on the enemy and taking them out. that hasn't changed. now, however, we primarily use missiles instead of guns and the pace is multiplied significantly as well as the ability to perform maneuvers such as going vertical, which simply were not feasible in the era of props. also, training does not take 7 to 8 years. you need to be an officer, which requires going to college for, so 4 years i guess, and then about 18 months of training including ots or ocs, depending on the branch and which can also be replaced with rotc or going to the navy or air force academy, which will be during your 4 years of college. nowhere near 7 to 8 years. i have no clue where you got that from. that's the length of 2 contracts.
@@Dr.Kay_R just... no. that's not how it works. just as it was shown in this video, there are ways to get around radar or infrared locks in dogfights. the whole premise of dogfights are that you have to get nose on and a radar or infrared lock. those are impossible in a slower turning aircraft or when the two aircraft are too close to each other. missiles can move in the general direction of the target aircraft's heat source or radar signature, depending on the missile. however, air-to-air missiles travel at speeds about mach 3, so it can only adjust itself onto the target aircraft so much. if the two aircraft are too close to each other, a fired missile will not have time to track onto and follow the enemy aircraft.
My uncle served in the Gulf War. He died recently, not in the war. Some health problems. Anyway, you will be forever missed man. ❤💪

where the health problems related to anything from the gulf war
I'm very sorry for your family's loss. His military family shares your grief. 1st Tank Battalion, Task Force Papa Bear, 1st Marine Division, ODS Semper Fidelis
Sorry. It sucks losing loved ones. Hang in there and just remember the good times. The first couple months are the hardest, but eventually it doesn’t hurt so much.
Rip iraqi pilot
How amazing is it that they have to stay in the present during battle worry about fuel worry about avionics and still know they have to do the hardest job of landing the fighter jet when the fight is over? 🎆☄️
Just got back from Top Gun. Awesome movie
Most messed up thing about war is that these soldiers were just following orders while doing their best to survive
Ahmed Boughoula but most of them decided to become a soldier and knew the risks of death but still signed up
@@Funniest_Tings in my country most soldiers are poor and young and I'd imagine it to be the case for countries iraq as well , I get that it's what they signed up but they don't agree with their countries policies and orders they're given

"Heat seeking AIM-7 Missile." The AIM-7 was radar guided...
Semi radar guided
Thank you! Glad someone else caught that. Semi-active radar guided, to be specific, but definitely not heatseeking.
@@araizkhan221 I actually did not know it was semi guided. So, what's the difference between semi radar guided, and radar guided?
@@AlienVibesss Aim-7 requires an aircraft to maintain radar lock for the missile to ride'. Full-active is a missile with its own targeting radar (Fire and Forget)
@@AlienVibesss it requires the lock on the target until it hits the target ...unlike radar guided misile like aim 120 which uses its own radar to find its target some time after it launches ...but aim 7 uses the radar of the aircraft
To be honest russian jets are no match to american jets, basically due to better missiles and durability...russians arent bad at engeneering, its just they had relatively poor economy to fund R&D and they havent moved on from ww2, and 60s where manuerability was prioritized ...long range rador and long range missiles completely shifted the balance towards west...russians cant catch up unless they improove their economy to be any where near.
Nevermind the fact since the cold war their soviet doctrine relied on speed and maneuver ability (hence why BMPs, BTRs and MT LBs are a thing in the first place, able to carry groups easily from point A to point B) While they seem like they had the upper hand in the early parts of the war. NATO would catch up (like when USA made the M1 Abrams and Germany made the Leopard which have proven to be very effective against T-72s and T-80s)
I wanna go back in time and slap my old self for thinking flying jets is like Ace Combat but with a stick
AIM 7 isn`t a heat seeking missile, it`s a radar guided sparrow, AIM 9 is a Sidewinder.
why hasn't anyone else spotted/ commented this. such an obvious mistake.
@@plasmacarrot6863 there is a couple in the comments
I think it's only semi actice radar missle.
@@averytiredman4857 yeah it is
Isn’t the aim7 a fox one? So semi avtive radar
