Driving style and bad habits can also lead to premature engine failure and wear. Bolt on parts will only get you so far. These are a few of the common issues and things that I see happen to people so hopefully this can help you avoid damaging your engine and save your wallet a little cash. Some of these may seem like common sense but a friendly reminder is always nice and if your new to the car world then hopefully these can save you some heart ache later down the road.

Smeedia: "check your oil atleast every 1500 miles" Me (with trust issues): Checking my STI's oil before i drive it. every. single. time. "im watching you"
Never hurts 😅 oil gremlins can be sneaky little peeps 👀
Hahahahahahha
Glad I'm not the only one😂
i love flapjacks...........................groundhog day!
every time I fill up
For long term turbo life, if you dont have a turbo timer, make sure to keep your engine idle for 30 seconds to 1 min 30 seconds depending on how hot your engine is. You want to let cooler oil get into your turbo and let your turbo cool down so your turbo doesnt burn oil when you turn off the car.
Also very good information 🙏 Thank-you for adding it 🔥
I always do this to my turbo civic when i go a little fast gotta let it cool😎
I just read on more modern turbo cars there's actually an electric pump that continues to pump oil once turned off. My 2008 Twin Turb Range Rover Sport has it. Its an electric humming sound. Older Turbo'd cars would need it.
No need for new turbo cars like these.
could this be a reason why my Subaru Impreza WRX had full oil and then overnight lost 1 quart? i am a new Subaru owner as well as a new turbo owner. any information I will gladly accept. thank you
“Taker her to dinner” “meet the parents” That killed me! 😂😂 very true WINE AND DINE guys! Lol
😉😉😉
Excellent info , never lug that turbo , just a side note , I know a 67 year old woman who has a 2002 WRX , she has 324k and nothing done and burns no oil ! Also know a young guy who's first car was a 2003 WRX , it was mint with only 80k , I know cause I sold it to him , after one month .........knock , knock , just shows you that it's about how you drive it ! Nothing else to add you have covered everything anybody needs to know about these cars in you're videos , keep it coming !
For sure! Driving style plays a HUGE factor in thr engines life span 🙏
Dumb question. 2018 STI here. My first turbo. My first Subaru. What rpm is lugging it? Can you cruise at 2K or keep it at 3-3.5K? I now understand don't flog it unless you're around 3K+ and do it gently. Thanks in advance. Also, this thing is hard to drive smoothly. First to second can be tricky. It seems to like 3.2-3.5K. Sound right? Thanks to all in advance.
So what you are saying is, don't buy a Subaru because you won't be able to enjoy it, you have to drive it like the 67 year old woman? Craziness. 2006 Subaru Forester STI with a Blouch Dom3 blew up all the time until i got it tuned properly. No issues for the last seven years, 340WHP on pump, 450WHP on VP109, 11sec grocery getter. Subarus are not eggs once you know what you are doing.
@@31Kittystyles Yea... General rule of thumb... U can go heavy throttle anything above 3.5k rpm... On cruise as low as 2k rpm not adviseable if there is uneven traffic speed or during up on road incline... On flat road yes u can keep cruising around there... But if need acceleration even mild overtaking.. better to downshift 1 or 2 gear then free to go.. 🍻
@Fearnot69 I cruze around 2.5k to 3k , going up a hill at 3k no questions, on highway at 120kmh around 2k. Don't come onto boost till 5 k, all personal preference.
Great vid as always. High demand/ low load is 100% something new guys should be aware of..
oh yea. and shitty gas.. hell, everything is spot on. lol
Glad i touched on the major points! And no one wants their engine to go so hopefully this helps some peeps out 🔥
You'd think engine lugging wouldn't be an issue and would be common sense. Watched it in person and it makes me cringe every time.
AndyFitzgerrell bro I’m the same way way. Every time I’m in somebody else’s car and I feel them give a bunch of throttle at low rpm I can just feel the engine just like “fucckkkk” ready to go boom
Would speeding up just 5mph count as lugging? I barely give my wrx any throttle and pretty sure im not hitting boost. Or should I down shift to and speed up that extra 5mph and up shift?
Excellent video sir. I've had turbo vehicles in the past to include a 2011 Mitsubishi Ralliart and 2016 Ford Focus ST. Both great vehicles for what they were, but with my recent new WRX purchase, I'm aiming to be a LOT more careful on how I treat and drive the car. These points are spot on especially that last one, I've made the mistake of dogging it in 6th gear in the ST going up a decent grade mountain and started running into issues. Just drop a gear or two and let the engine sing like it should.
Yes!!! My dude thanks once again. My issue is always hot weather. My brother and I started taking alot of your advice luckly just before my build began. Thanks to you we wanna do things the right and safe way!!!!👍

Lol was a off scripted moment that I felt fit the scenario 😅🔥
Smeedia dude it was freaking perfect 🔥
Got my car back from a shop today, converted to speed density and moved my iat to front mount piping. Totally wild to see IAT below ambient temps while cruising... can not believe i was considering a bigger top mount. Also equal length headers are awesome!!! Cant believe it took me so long to switch
The decrease in temp with a FMIC is soooo much better! Much lower temps! 😁🔥
Which is a good or the best front mounted inter cooler radiator
This is a great vid. The other day I got on my car getting onto the freeway and had a sudden drop in DAM to 0.938/0.938 as well as constant Fine knock adjustment 0.00 to 0.26 under load. I was really worried. I looked into the issue on NASIOC, forums there had the same issue due to high atmospheric temps above 90 or bad fuel. To remedy this it was recommended to reset the Cobb Accessport, add Lucas Octane Boost and refuel with better gasoline. So far it’s good, I won’t wot until this fuel with octane booster and bad fuel is completely replaced with good fuel. I’m really glad you brought this up. Thanks amigo 🤙🏼
Glad you got it sorted out! I dont suggest resetting parameters as your car needs to relearn everything. I qould just be nice on her for a bit 🙏
My first WRX should be here next week, been watching all of your videos to get up to speed! Thanks for all of the informational content

Good content. I feel like all us old subie guys read all this on the forums back in the day but I bet there a "plethora" 🙃 of newer owners that could benefit from every one of those suggestions. Keep up the good work sir.
NASIOC and a few other forms is where I've referenced for years 8 years or so now, but video makes things much easier for people from what ive seen so hopefully it helps some people out. 🙏 learned from a few people on the older NASIOC Forns like Unabomber and a few others.
I just got a 2020 sti and your videos are incredibly educational but also quite terrifying. You've already spared my car from my dumbass aimlessly throwing in a bov and now this video has a ton of very great information. Thank you for making these!

Oh man, I totally remember learning about sediment, water, and micro-biological growth in fuel tanks when I reclassed for 92F. If I remember correctly they called it BS&W. They told us to stay away from those run-down gas stations and not to get fuel when the gas station is being refilled by the tanker, because that can disturb the sediment and the pumps can pick it up and it can end up in your fuel tank. I haven't heard many people talk about it and I think it's an interesting thing people don't really think about.
Had no idea that they talk about that in the Army, its a real issue that most people are not aware of and can have some damaging effects 😖
@@Smeedia for sure, we learned a lot in fueler school. The fuel standards for aviation are crazy! The book standard for water content is 10ppb, but aviation until want no more than 3-4ppb! Which is nuts! But it makes sense because when there's an aircraft that goes down, the first thing they look at is the fuel. I learned way more about applicable stuff in fuel school vs truck driver school haha.
I never filled up while the gas station is being refueled, however it is more because I have this irrational fear it will explode... Happy I've been doing it and have a real reason now!
This guy knows what he’s talking about great video and thanks for the info
A great analogy. Mann I love this channel.
❤❤❤
Man, I saw this video one day too late. I was cruising around the Nürnberg loop and found myself in six gear, but Welo and power bogging down about 1000 RPM. So I figured I just give it a ton of gas and a get right out of that little bogging state. Boy that was dumb my engine a literally exploded. At first I thought it was may be There airbag recall on my 335I, but my hands are still intact, so them I’m assumed it would likely be the blower motor wires, since I skipped the recall too! I’ve been literally gathering All the small broken pieces of my engine block. Scattered all over the road! I had just rented a giant warehouse storage unit where is pissing together all the little pieces of the car, kind of like how they did for the space shuttle that exploded! I think I can path investigation now now that you gave me this crucial information! Cheers and Godspeed, sir
The first reason was partially why most car companies included start stop. It was less about efficient fuel savings and more about saving the engine. The engine wont be in trouble if its not sucking in hot air! sit even longer and itll just start cooling a bit.

Hey man! Big fan of the channel always watch all of your videos and learn a lot try to support the best I can I'm sorry if you get this question a lot or if you don't want to answer it no big worry but I was just wondering have you done a quarter mile in your car? Appreciate the support my man! Ans I have not yet done a quarter mile. I'd like to so I could see what times are but have no had the chance yet 😅
Love the channel, I am gearing up to buy my very first WRX, and your videos have been extremely informational. I didn’t see any videos tailered to a CVT Transmission though, is there any chance you can make a video geared specifically at what modifications can and can’t be done to a CVT compared to a Manual Transmission?
Yessir! I can definitely make that happen 🙏 and hopefully you get it here soon 😁
Appreciate it! I am hoping so too, I am just trying to prepare as much as possible before getting there as I plan on modifying it as soon as I get it. I look forward to another great video, CVT edition!
@@alfredoduran7974 Just get a manual. 2017 WRX was my first manual, no ifs, ands, or buts. I love having a manual and will not have it any other way.
@Sean Moore I haven’t driven a manual in close to 10 years, I am very strongly debating on brushing up on it to be able to get a manual. I live in Los Angeles, so that’s the main reason I thought CVT would work better, with traffic and all. But honestly the options are very limited when it comes to CVT, so I might end up getting a manual in the end. Still up in the air, but it would definitely help to know what my limitations are if I do go CVT, before I actually purchase it.
Just brought a brand new 04 why would you want a new one

1-Dont lugging the engine (this can be expanded into many ways of badly lugging the engine and risk wearing conrod bearing, broken ringland on subaru engine) i- dig launch on sticky tyre/high grip surface without half clutching..let the cluth ride and slip slightly untill the car properly moving..also saves the driveshaft...and yes watching infront of my eyes a fellow scooby friend getting conrod noise when he lug the engine on drag launch ii-hill climb/accelerating wot in high gear without letting the engine rpm rise up and car rolls into higher rpm...i always let the engine rpm rise slowly in low throttle situation and after above 3k rpm swithing into wot (ie: always downshift before doing overtaking or heavy acceleration to keep rev over 3.5k rpm) iii-alway keep light throttle during driving while the car water temp still below 85degree C
Good information to add, thank you 🙏🙏🙏
i don’t understand the second point? don’t accelerate a lot in a higher gear?
With RPM low, don't got 100% on throttle, build into it.
@@janeicepotwin5783 in high gear.. use minimal throttle to roll into higher rpm first before gunning the throttle... Or downshift for better keeping the engine.. (if not, its the same as lugging the engine at low rpm/low speed with permanent stress on engine bearings especially conrod)

@@Smeedia yeah that is what i have been seeing. Luckily being able to work from home I am not in a real need for a vehicle. But we will see. Subaru has a tendency of disappointing people with their information. Hopefully this one will have the 400HP they claim it will have. As I sit and wait for my own engine to be rebuilt (and culprit for such to be revealed by the shop), I'm definitely taking the lugging and "no drag racing in hot weather" to heart. I realize I probably got a little "spirited" on 98F+ days. I'll dial that back a bit, going forward. I DO have a PW Verticooler TMIC but still, I'll keep heat soak in mind, more often, going forward!
Glad I practice these things. I hope my EJ255 engine last forever

I have an automatic turbo with 274hp, I feel the relationship is smooth
Hi smeedia, amazing videos and I'm an avid fan always looking out for your videos. 2 questions though I'm in Kenya and I own a 2002 WRX and we have very shitty fuel and I regularly suffer from reduced IAM and feedback knock esp when on boost. I wonder if you can give more details on octane boosters how they work and how much do you put in the petrol tank also, do they really work or it's a marketing gimmick as what other people say. Also kindly address the most basic symptoms of Subarus head gasket leak to suspect a head gasket failure. I don't have access of the head gasket failure testing kit.
A compression test will be a very good indicator for headgasket failure as well as mixed oil and coolant. Its not too common on the turbo engines but can still happen. As for the fuel, people say that they work, however to the degree I cannot confirm. There are people with octane testers to be abls to read the % but I like the idea, maybe I'll test it 😅🔥
Hi, Waleed. Fellow Kenyan Subaru owner here (Fozzy STi). Get a good tune and that will eliminate det (detonation), which is what causes your IAM to plummet. Check out @KJTuned on IG. He's my tuner. I highly recommend him.
Also, as long as you're getting feedback knock, STAY OUT OF BOOST!
@@ericn7698 wah sorry saw your comment very late. Very good comment, tupatane WhatsApp?

should probably also add cold starting your car in 30F weather and getting right into heavy throttle/boost without letting the oil warm up first is pretty bad too

Thanks for the video! Speaking of oil, my 2016 STI has a tiny leak in the turbo return line gasket (per Subaru). How fast should I have it replaced? It took 6 months of the car sitting and the oil collecting on the RF exhaust to even notice. Now that the residual oil has burnt off the exhaust, the smell is gone so I was thinking I could wait.
I'd probably swap it anyway and soon ish, you qouldent want it to come back worse 😖
Access port was the first thing I bought when I got my ST. I was reading 200° and beyond on stock intercooler. Intercooler was the second thing I bought after seeing that. Now my temps are never more than +20 ambient unless I'm stationary. It's sad that OEMs can be so terrible and the average consumer won't even know.
Hey man new to your page and love what you are doing! Quick question tho. My subi is my daily(so far) but I added a catless down pipe and a Tomei exhaust. Bought a Cobb accessport that came with a air intake. Now I just bought killer B external wastegate headers + wastegate kit. Would the air intake and headers be okay to install with the stock turbo?Since it is a daily 17 wrx
Yes it will be good but youll need a protune to accommodate those parts 🙏🔥 also appreciate the support! 😁
Smeedia yes plan on bringing her to a place that’s gonna tune her up and np you are really helpful!
Just my opinion, but I've had a TMIC and a FMIC and unless you have a built motor with 500+ HP I prefer TMIC. The boost comes on a lot quicker. There's 4 more bends and 5ft more feet of tube. Of course a FMIC runs cooler than a stock TMIC. If its a 105° outside it wont matter if you have a top or a front mount. Does a FMIC look cool absolutely lol. Just my thoughts. Not trying to say you're wrong or anything just What I like. Thanks for making all these videos I know its a lot of work!
No worries we all have diffrent stances! I just prefer having lower IATs 🙏🔥

thats one of the reasons to go water/air ic. no problems running hot compressor air after that mod. no hot turbo air in traffic problems either.
Have a Corolla GR one other thing is to warm up the oil temp 170f or higher before getting into high rpm and proper cool down idle before turning off car.
10:40 ... I tell my friends this ALL the time 🤦♂️ gotta be easy on her till she's ready to fly lolll

What do you think about running E85? I just was wondering when you discussed bad fuel in this video.
I’m guilty of the high demand low load one but at around 2,500 RPMs. Not again lol didn’t know it was that bad for my turbo engine set up
Ooo lucky I installed waters squirts on my top mount like 99 STI my GC8 loves that cold. All you need is process west kit comes with pre drilled holes then get a after market window cleaner kit add the hose to jets and walla press the button to squirt water on your intercooler or top mount as needed unless you have this feature with the STI
Not a bad DIY option for sprayers 🔥😁
Awesome content, I need help with a decision. I currently have a Dodge Charger Scatpack, I like the 2020 sti but don’t know if is a good idea to make the switch, what do you think?? Pros and cons will help. Thank you.
What are you lookong for out of a car? The STI will not be as fast as the Charger in a stright line however; it will have better handling characteristics and a very good transmission. Fuel economy would probably be close to the same. Lersonally I love the driving style of the STI it gives a very good driver connection and is a blast to drive
Smeedia, I don’t mind the speed factor, I had an evo8 and it was awesome also had a 2000 Subaru rs and sadly had to sell it. I do like the endless customization for the sti something that is not as good with the charger! I saw your video of the new sti and it looks like a Toyota Avalon that’s my take, so I prefer to current Sti. Thank you for your input!! Keep the good work!!
Great video. I went through some 107 deg weather while driving around 80 mph in my 2021 Outback XT. Seems the intercooler would be worthless in cases like this. Does this mean my engine produces less hp? Is my turbo insanely hot? Does my car pull timing?
Yes and no, so with hotter air it becomes less dense so less dense air means less air goinf into the engine. Which in turn means less power. It will pull a small amount but nothing to stress about 🙏
I'm glad to know you're from the oil industry so I'll assume you would know about this. Back in the day I used to race a street bike on track and swapped out the OEM brakes lines for SS braided for huge braking power. along with that I used Motul's RBF 600 and found that I had no brake fade and it stayed clear in the resevoir. Can I use this type of fluid in the Subie brake system? If not what can I use to have better performance? lastly, can I use MOTUL oils for the WRX? It's an '18 wrx non-STi
You can use it, dot 4 and dot 3 are what thr majority of people use. I've used thr RBF in the past with good results. Just make sure to flush all thr OE fluid out of the system
@@Smeedia TYVM. Keep up the great work.
Such a subie guru 💪

Watching this video after a Cooper S Clubman with a cracked cylinder head. I think I could have done with more oil changes and it would drink oil till the oil warning light came on if doing a hard corner so I'd keep topping it up. Also it was the N14 engine. I've heard driving hard and shutting off suddenly is bad cause stationary oil. I think the only thing that could have preserved that engine is never rev it or have fun in it. I didn't rev it to redline cold. The cylinder head finally failed accelerating from a stop and getting to 4000 rpm but I think it was on its way out. The other thing is petrol - as high octane as possible? After all the effective compression in a turbo engine is going to be extremely high, even if the CR is lower to compensate for expected boost.
When I started driving in 1968 my dad drilled into my head to check the oil every time you fill up ,back then cars used or leaked oil on a regular bases , so even now I still check it when I get gas, you never know when a oil leak will start and it is such a simple thing to do
Good practice to do and your absolutely right 🙏
What are your thoughts on oil additives? I used some Liqui Moly enige seal repair stuff with some racing 5w 30 for my recent oil change to fix burning oil. It has been over 1000kms with no oil burn.
Ive never looked into them before, but curious now 🤔 kind of qeirds me out adding things to my oil 😅
I'm buying my first wrx on wednesday, very helpful video! Thanks my guy, u made it clear and simple enough I could understand even tho I don't know shit hahaha
7:32 ... I hope my ex's ride starves for oil. Yeah, i went that low.
🤣🤣🤣🤣
I have a '02 turboed WS6 with a T76, 9.2 compression. Not a daily driver but when I do, look out. All's that's been said is common sense. But we all know that common sense isn't all that common
Love Your White rims 😍 Thinking about Getting myself the White ones instead of Bronze/gold 😅 How often do you need to Clean Them?😅
Thank you! And as long as you ceramic coat them, theyre not too hard to clean 😁
@@Smeedia 😅😂😂 okay Nice, thanks. Planed new rims for next year 😁
10:23 How would this work on an automatic?? Would the ECU tell the transmission to shift to a higher gear if I want more power?? Or do I just work into the boost slowly??
You the bast man. My car gat Fuel and water mixing. I replaced the fuel pump but the car is shaking in neutral after 30sec its start to shaking
I would siphon all the fuel our of the tank and refill with fresh gas
My firends had a Honda and would love to rev it a lot to hear the low off valve but had to replace like two turbos in it always wondered why I told him maybe not to rev it all the time
I’ve read and seen to much on how the STIs like to eat oil. Now that I just got mine Ima be checking every weeknd just to play it safe. Not an issue with me I love seeing that engine bay 😅
Doesn't hurt to check it until you've become familiar with the car 😁😁
@@Smeedia thank you man! I love your content!
Another good video. I think alot of it comes from experience with driving a manual transmission. Match the gears down shift a gear at a time and you'll be ok. Then you'll get confident in rev matching when down shifting so your power is ready when you are. Super fun!
10:47. Hahaha that shit made my day so much better. You funny bastard you.
🤣🤣🤣🤣 the analogy fit so well 😅😅
I am in memphis tn and i try my best to stay out of boost. Its so hot and muggy here. Soon as i get to where im going i pop the hood and let the turbo cool for 2 or 3 mins b4 i turn it off.
Never a bad idea, after you get to where your going there's no need to. Thr humidity sucks, when i lived in Louisiana it was always 100% 😅
@@Smeedia i here ya man well keep up the good work! Peace.
@@Smeedia Yes, this is another must do, unless you are running a turbo timer, if you've been cranking on it, you should let it idle for at least 3 minutes before shutting it off. I should try to grab a video of it, but we have a perfect teaching example of this at my work. our skidsteer is getting old an worn, and when you shut it down, you can hear the turbo spinning for about a full minute after the engine is off. Well the same is happening in our cars, just our bearings are in much better shape so we can't hear it! LOL
With newer turbo engines I disagree, especially with thr STIs and WRXs.the tuebos are water cooled so even after you've shut it off the turbo still receives some coolant flowing through it that it will cool it off. Unless your full track day I don't see a need to let the car idle down. For older cars that do not utilize coolant then I 100% agree 🙏
@@Smeedia Yes, agreed, it does get the coolant flow, but not the oil flow, which is important to save those precious turbo bearings. My general rule is simply, drive nicely for the last few miles or minutes before shutting it down LOl
Adding a watermeth injection can eliminate most of these problems by cooling the air instantly and increase octane by up to 10 points. Not to mention it can prevent carbon build up and stream cleaning your engine in the same time. Best mod you can do to a turbo car.
Very true and a good addition to add 🔥🙏
I've seen my IAT temps skyrocket when stopped on a hot day, but it's still in the intake and not the charge pipe. So I'll give that a shot, would I need to retune for that?
I'll comment later because it's late, but I subscribed so that I can visit this in the morning after I eat my breakfast muffin from the neighborhood 76.
Eyyyy, appreciate the support 🙏🙏🙏
