man Takahashi was strong!! He was slamming Shamrock and taking him down all over the place. Shamrock's striking was powerful in this match and I cringed out of my chair when Shamrock turned Takahashi's foot upside down at the end.

It's a shame that most MMA fans only know of Shamrock from 2000 onward. Back in his hey day(1990s) he was a wrecking machine. He was primarily a submission wrestler. Age and old wars caught up to him at the turn of the century and when more fighters started rounding out their games with boxing, muay thai and jujitsu Ken didn't adjust very well to the times.

The Japanese custom of observing combat in silence is one that the U.S should adopt. The sound of strikes landing is the other half to viewing.Our standard is like watching a movie with 2 guys describing the film as opposed to listening to the soundtrack.

I have to disagree with this one. I also think it's less about the culture and more about the time period. Early UFC fights were similarly quiet if you're actually watching the fights and not watching a documentary or edit of the fights thrown together with some rock music, the people were just quieter observers back then. But, fighting is a sport, just like basketball or either type of football, depending on where you live. I wouldn't want to watch an NBA game where it's all shoe-squeaking and players yelling, nor would I want to watch a football game with giant gaps of silence between every play. Cheering is part of a sport. It helps hype up big moves and massive plays, and it can entirely shift the energy in an arena. A devastating blow can hurt you a lot worse when all you hear is the crowd screaming against you, and free throws are harder to make on enemy courts, there's such thing as a "home field advantage" for a reason, and it's not because of the hardwoods or a different type of grass, its because of the fans cheering or booing. You remember the moments you cheer for more than you remember the quiet moments in the seats for sure, especially when you're there. In real life, only the first few rows of people would even hear any of the blows landing in the first place, and I'm personally not interested in listening to the fighters heave and gasp for air for 15 minutes of a 30 minutes entertainment block. That "describing the film instead of listening to the soundtrack" is somewhat of a poor example, considering silent movies (which is all music and scenes) are a dead art, and people actually talk in a movie today. You can't name a single silent film in the last 50 years that anyone gives any credit to. Even that "A Quiet Place" movie about literally being silent had speaking and oral explanations of the story and plot in it. And that's the only example in the last 50 years that comes moderately close to a viable example, considering no one makes, watch to watch, or has given any box-office success to a silent or soundtrack-only film. That description they give explains technique, striking abilities, and things pertinent to the fight while you watch. They're not talking about tea and crumpets. They're explaining that the 15th strike to the leg might not look like a lot from our seats, but that's the reason the fighter crumpled to the ground. I'd much rather hear that than muffled "OOF, OOH, AHH, *smack* OOH, PSHHHHHH, *breathing*" for my half-hour block of entertainment. And I think a lot of other people feel the same. And for anyone interested in the sport, those announcers are how you come to learn about and understand it. Just listening to dudes grunt and land blows on each other wouldn't teach anyone anything. They wouldn't know what techniques are being used, how an armbar works, or anything like that unless they'd been practicing on their own, which the majority of fans do not. Without announcers, there's not much to differentiate this sport from a spar at the gym besides their level of skill being much higher than old gymrat Joe's.

Wish the Shamrocks were fighting still to this day. This is a MASTER at work right here 10:30 . This man is prepping to perform another sleeper hold. Shamrock works his neck up to get his own right arm underneath to perform the submission. Its beautifully executed and Hashi is so fatigued from the last submission a few min ago, he totally doesnt realize whats about to happen AGAIN lol haha, its just great , great strategic planning by Shamrock :) .

The opponent used a rope escape. If a fighter can reach the rope with his hand or his foot, he can grab/tap it to use a 'rope escape'. Both fighters are stood up and centered and a point is deducted for the fighter that used the escape. Every fighter has 5 rope escapes at the start of the match.

It is pure joy to watch Shamrock in his prime. He could have ended this fight pretty much anytime he wanted after the 1st 4 mins. Props to Takahashi for hanging with him as long as he did....but Ken was clearly wearing him down, methodically and with purpose...and took over the last 2 mins. Its amazing to watch how MMA has evolved since 1993. Shamrock was truly one of the greatest of the originals.

To anyone else that was confused about Ken Shamrock getting the cards, it was due to the rules of Pancrase. If you can manage a robe break to get away from a submission, they take a point away from you. If there is no KO or TKO, the man with the most points win. Ken didn't honor the break when the ref called it.

Man I loved that game because you could play with the Pancrase rule-set that included the point system, rope breaks, and the yellow and red cards. I really wish we had more games that contained that ruleset and some of the legends of Pancrase.

man Takahashi was strong!! He was slamming Shamrock and taking him down all over the place. Shamrock's striking was powerful in this match and I cringed out of my chair when Shamrock turned Takahashi's foot upside down at the end.
I liked how he changed to what seemed more like his hamstring and upper thigh to spread the damage more evenly. Seemed like that was him being kind enough to allow him to walk with that leg.

It's a shame that most MMA fans only know of Shamrock from 2000 onward. Back in his hey day(1990s) he was a wrecking machine. He was primarily a submission wrestler. Age and old wars caught up to him at the turn of the century and when more fighters started rounding out their games with boxing, muay thai and jujitsu Ken didn't adjust very well to the times.

I've always admired how quiet and respectful the Japanese audiences are at MMA and wrestling events.
Ken Shamrock was absolutely dangerous back in the 1990's. In his prime, he probably would've choked out Tito Ortiz 10 out of 10 matches in the UFC.
Many people complain about how he should have called it quits. I'm happy he continued as long as he did. The guy is a living legend. And yes, Ortiz would have been the living dead if he fought Kenny a few years earlier.

The Japanese custom of observing combat in silence is one that the U.S should adopt. The sound of strikes landing is the other half to viewing.Our standard is like watching a movie with 2 guys describing the film as opposed to listening to the soundtrack.

I have to disagree with this one. I also think it's less about the culture and more about the time period. Early UFC fights were similarly quiet if you're actually watching the fights and not watching a documentary or edit of the fights thrown together with some rock music, the people were just quieter observers back then. But, fighting is a sport, just like basketball or either type of football, depending on where you live. I wouldn't want to watch an NBA game where it's all shoe-squeaking and players yelling, nor would I want to watch a football game with giant gaps of silence between every play. Cheering is part of a sport. It helps hype up big moves and massive plays, and it can entirely shift the energy in an arena. A devastating blow can hurt you a lot worse when all you hear is the crowd screaming against you, and free throws are harder to make on enemy courts, there's such thing as a "home field advantage" for a reason, and it's not because of the hardwoods or a different type of grass, its because of the fans cheering or booing. You remember the moments you cheer for more than you remember the quiet moments in the seats for sure, especially when you're there. In real life, only the first few rows of people would even hear any of the blows landing in the first place, and I'm personally not interested in listening to the fighters heave and gasp for air for 15 minutes of a 30 minutes entertainment block. That "describing the film instead of listening to the soundtrack" is somewhat of a poor example, considering silent movies (which is all music and scenes) are a dead art, and people actually talk in a movie today. You can't name a single silent film in the last 50 years that anyone gives any credit to. Even that "A Quiet Place" movie about literally being silent had speaking and oral explanations of the story and plot in it. And that's the only example in the last 50 years that comes moderately close to a viable example, considering no one makes, watch to watch, or has given any box-office success to a silent or soundtrack-only film. That description they give explains technique, striking abilities, and things pertinent to the fight while you watch. They're not talking about tea and crumpets. They're explaining that the 15th strike to the leg might not look like a lot from our seats, but that's the reason the fighter crumpled to the ground. I'd much rather hear that than muffled "OOF, OOH, AHH, *smack* OOH, PSHHHHHH, *breathing*" for my half-hour block of entertainment. And I think a lot of other people feel the same. And for anyone interested in the sport, those announcers are how you come to learn about and understand it. Just listening to dudes grunt and land blows on each other wouldn't teach anyone anything. They wouldn't know what techniques are being used, how an armbar works, or anything like that unless they'd been practicing on their own, which the majority of fans do not. Without announcers, there's not much to differentiate this sport from a spar at the gym besides their level of skill being much higher than old gymrat Joe's.
I dunno UFC is pretty quiet these days. 😀

i never have seen anything like that before. Ken puts the guy in a darce choke, the guy is clearly out cold and they wake him up to keep fighting and to ad insult to it, they give ken a penalty.
It's a rope escape, like in pro wrestling, you have to relase the submission. That's why he got penalised. Pancrase rules were a weird hybrid of mma and pro wrestling.
And at the 2 min mark, Ken would have Teed off on his face when he was trying to position to go for the rnc. It's a little weird.

Wish the Shamrocks were fighting still to this day. This is a MASTER at work right here 10:30 . This man is prepping to perform another sleeper hold. Shamrock works his neck up to get his own right arm underneath to perform the submission. Its beautifully executed and Hashi is so fatigued from the last submission a few min ago, he totally doesnt realize whats about to happen AGAIN lol haha, its just great , great strategic planning by Shamrock :) .

The opponent used a rope escape. If a fighter can reach the rope with his hand or his foot, he can grab/tap it to use a 'rope escape'. Both fighters are stood up and centered and a point is deducted for the fighter that used the escape. Every fighter has 5 rope escapes at the start of the match.

It is pure joy to watch Shamrock in his prime. He could have ended this fight pretty much anytime he wanted after the 1st 4 mins. Props to Takahashi for hanging with him as long as he did....but Ken was clearly wearing him down, methodically and with purpose...and took over the last 2 mins. Its amazing to watch how MMA has evolved since 1993. Shamrock was truly one of the greatest of the originals.

To anyone else that was confused about Ken Shamrock getting the cards, it was due to the rules of Pancrase. If you can manage a robe break to get away from a submission, they take a point away from you. If there is no KO or TKO, the man with the most points win. Ken didn't honor the break when the ref called it.

Man I loved that game because you could play with the Pancrase rule-set that included the point system, rope breaks, and the yellow and red cards. I really wish we had more games that contained that ruleset and some of the legends of Pancrase.
