Making a track saw is easy. All you need to get started is a table saw.
That’s not a table saw you see under there. That’s a circular saw he made from a track saw.
....and a pillar drill and loads of space.
Making a table saw is easy. All you need to get started is a circular saw.
🤣👏👏
At least he didn’t use a milling machine for the metal bits.
It is a very good book for beginners as well as for those that are already into kzhead.infoUgkxTNB_zFBSnTo_O1PqfVUwgi7ityw0JlKt A very good basic ebook to keep as a reference too. I like it and the way the subject matter is presented. It has humor and that helps with the reading.
I've been building these tools for years BUT never with the metal track. That is incredible thankyou for sharing. It improves an OK plan to a great plan. I will be building them like yours from now on. This tool makes cutting sheets of plywood much safer for one person, as opposed to using a table saw. It also means there is no $1000 dollar table saw left on the job site when there's no one around. That was common practice in the past.
The candle wax idea is spot on. An ancient method that works really good and it is still used today in shipyards.
Ancient ! My Grandad used to use candle wax on his hand saws back in the 40s 50s and 60s in his cabinet shop.
A wipe on wax paste finish also makes a near frictionless surface.
I like how your mind works. I'm inspired to use creativity and ingenuity more in my hobbies.
Thank you ! I needed that adapter bracket segment to have a layout plan for my Makita skill saw attachment.
I have looked at many different types of guide, made one myself but this one seems to be the best idea, so simple, I shall make one just like this, thank you for the idea!
This is the BEST DIY track saw idea I have seen. Saved!
Perfecta!! Recomendable 100% !! 👍👍👍
I did same thing minus the channel has worked well for the last 20 years Thumbs up on your mods
The best homemade track saw I have seen in the net. Excellent!
Ive got 6 full packs of 12mm laminate left over from my house renovation... im so glad i found your channel
Tracksaws are the great unsung heroes of the workshop. Way better than struggling with large sheets on the table saw. Both safer and much more accurate. In fact, for the home shop, they can be a real space saver as you can get away with a jobsite saw plus a track saw.
The best uncomplicated saw track. Well done.
Best track saw guide so far.I still use the straight edge and clamps.I think they will retire after I've built me one like yours😊😊😊.Saved.
Awesome Track saw, one of the best I've seen
I used silicone on the back of my diy track... spread with a fine V notched spreader .. it worked great !!
I was beginning to wonder if only I had that idea too. Instead of a fine V notched spreader, I used a wide putty knife with a few wires wrapped over the edge to create a uniform silicone layer.
I'm not fond of using any silicone around wood or any other surface that will be coated later, as it end up interfering with adhesion of coatings, or causing fisheyes on any painted finish... Wax is much better, as it stays on the sliding surface and does not migrate like silicone.
@Alfredo Márquez I'm thinking he meant in place of the sand paper he used a tube of silicone and spread it out like a sheet of "grippy" rubber. It will completely cure so as to not interfere with the surface of the good pieces being cut. Also, it will not scratch the piece if you are cutting something that had already been finished.
The best guide rail I've ever seen!!
This is the best track saw i have seen being made
I like the way the "outrigger" on the saw's foot plate is small and simple enough to leave in place all the time.
Incredibly impressed by this video. I will definitely be building this for my circ saw. Thank you for the brilliant idea here.
I agree! Most all other diy "track saw" videos don't include a way to lock the saw into the track. This way you don't have to worry about keeping the saw against the fence, thus guaranteeing a perfect cut every time 👍
Os três ficaram ótimo
I was wondering about the sandpaper at the bottom, until I saw that rough piece of lumber that you cut. Nice job.
Great job, I believe I'd buy a piece of furniture from you, sight unseen. You are a great craftsman!
I love handmade tools the best! Great project! Love how you turned something like laminate into a tracksaw guide. Great!
Truly inspirational right down to non slip backing. I've been looking for a rip track idea for my Circular saw for some time now, can't seem to manage free hand any more . Looks like I have just found it . May thanks for sharing. Great work
But you can tell he is no second fix carpenter because if he would put that sandpaper on laquered doors.....😉. He doesnt think in that categories.
Sehr gute Idee mit dem Alu-Profil. So werde ich meine Schiene auch bauen! Danke!
Thank you so much for this! Racking my brain on how to do better than using a 2”x8’ piece of metal and a circular saw and now I know!
The addition of the sandpaper as a non-slip footing is very cool. Nice
That's the one thing I didn't like. It's going to damage whatever you're cutting and be a bugger to replace. I'd have used strips of rubber, like on normal track saw track.
Method + logic + patience = success. Well done!l
Your perfection has no boundaries
Brilliant, been looking to get one of these, might make a couple so I can have a shorter one as well.
So using those two inverted pieces of "U" track was brilliant. Great idea!
for real !
What are the "U" track measures?
@@douglastube100 looks like a standard T Track (bottom) table saw guide (top)
@@aimkdu13 Where do you find one that interlock as smoothly as in the video?
That's incredible and I know even at my level, I could make it. Thank you!
Great video. I like how there’s no talking, just doing. Thanks for letting us follow along and not have to keep skipping through any of it!
Parabéns...., ficou excelente e muito funcional!!! Abraço aqui do Brasil 🇧🇷
A lot of effort, but a real nice result. Congrats. Thanks for the upload.
Very nice I like the quick attach attachment idea it still gives you the ability to use your saw without having any thing attached to it. Using laminate flooring very good. I think I'm gonna make one like this. Keep up the good work man 👍😁
great ideas. I had seen one similar made on youtube but no added track or non stick backing. I also have laminate but it is very thin and wobbly 🤔. I shall search out a broken box or spares friends might have.
I often use the countersink to spot through the screw holes of a bracket or hinge then pilot drill. If just drilling holes, I do the pilot first & then countersink. It keeps them concentric.
I just made one myself today, more or less exactly the same.it Works great! Thank you so much for this video.
I believe so that it was a best idea to create a saw track that I seen so far! but it is not a general used because it is designing just for this type of the circular saw. I want to make it for my Ryobi because its hook & holder exactly as same as this one! " Thank you very much for sharing that with us" Great job done!!
Great job. You just inspired me to build my own. 👍
Cool idea. I think I will make one myself as I have most of the materials laying around anyway. I did chuckle at grinding the screw tips down for two reasons. 1. Just use the right size screws. 2. You put foam tape on the bottom anyway.
Nicely done!
Great! All I need now is a fully equipped workshop to make a simple guide to allow me to cut more accurately with the basic tools I already have.
Really good idea using engineered wood!
I love using that stuff in jigs. It's stable, easy to work, slickly finished on one side, has perfectly straight and square edges, easy to expand for length (as he did here) or width, and cheap, since flooring stores always have extra lengths of it from jobs.
Awesome build! Loved the sandpaper and double stick tape on the bottom for grip! Great idea!
lol. this is not a track saw. Its a straight edge for circular saw. And I would love to see all those prefinished panels after being in contact with sandpaper. I will tell you something My Makita and festool never left any scratch.and tracksaw is not just to cut straight. Its also chip free cut and dust collection.
@@marcelo403polo2 actually, my circular saw also has the vacuum ataachement, and as for chipping, well better blade then :D but still it is a track saw quide not the saw itself. right now im thinkin, to what to change the sandpaper (exactly the pre-finished panels) maby felt or rubber.
@@TheOvercharge I guess you could try same stuff as festool and makita is using. Kinda rubbery 2 strips. Pretty good friction on prepainted panels. Also on the edge there is another strip, which makes like zero clearance protecting from tear out. IMO if you cut lots of those, just cry once, buy once.
@@marcelo403polo2 of course, if you use like a dayli basis, then i would also buy a real one, but for a hobbyst, who would use it a 1-2x times a year... overkill. but like the saying is, you get what you pay for.
Very well done. Thank you for sharing.
I like the use of the composite floor boards :)
Bardzo dobra robota
i agree za dobra rabota on the construction but he should not cut with the electrical cord on the running blade side.....very dangerous
Your timing (or mine, I suppose) is very good. I need something like this as we speak for cutting sheets of plywood. Thanks very much for the ideas. In my case, I'm going to add a channel to the bottom to use some clamps I have from previous cheaper straightedge extrusions. Thanks again, and thumbs up to crush a troll.
Now thats a protest I could get behind Mike, Thumbs up to crush a Troll..... like it
beautifully simple in concept and excecution. well done!
One of the greatest ideas I've seen so far on KZhead, thank you.
It's what separates us from the rest of the animal kingdom. The ability to make woodworking tools!
Thank you for the laminate flooring jig idea.
Ficou perfeito. Parabéns!
What kind of sanding belt are you using to grind the screws flush without tearing the belt up??
Anout 10 of them I'd say, unless they were stainless
Use corundum or zirconium
Good effort. Next make yourself a dust extractor for the saw. Even fitting a plastic bottle
You know, it's fantastic idea with plastic bottle, possible i will make a video about this, thanks!
I always wondered why they sell those blue sheets in builders markets... :) Perfect video, keep them coming...
sweet adaptation of the idea. multiple thumbs up. now to find a second hand saw like that. the cheaper ones don't have the double slide adaptors on the base :/
Awesome! Great build. I've been thinking about building I've similar to this for a while but have been hung up on how to make the track glide part for the saw footplate. I really like your solution. I was thinking about using some of the UHMW I have and milling a glider out of that but wasn't sure how to fix it to the saw. You solved my problem 👊🍻 Keep up the excellent work brother 👍👍
Nice, simple, I love it. What width panel did you use and what type of fitting mechanism is it?
Good work , bravo👍👏😉. Thanks for this video. Norbert(France)
Could vinyl flooring that already has the rubber backing be used instead of the flooring you used here? AND instead of a candle for the wax, what about using wax like the kind used for chalk painting furniture? I have these on hand and don't have taper candles.
I think you are spot on with the use of the vinyl flooring with the rubber backing. I don’t know why you’d opt for sandpaper, when it limits you from using this set up on anything where you don’t want to mar the surface. Not sure about the wax question, if there would be some inherent difference that would make it less desirable, but I suppose you could experiment on a pice of scrap flooring and saw outside of this project, just to see if it works.
Nice job !!! I'll be making one from some leftover laminate. I'm going to try using Plasti-dip for the backing.
Wow, im impressed... this one especially useful video... thank you.
How did you make sure the long track was perfectly square when you screwed it down? No bow in the middle?
They are pretty ridgid, he had 2 saw track rails on both ends to space evenly away from laminate support backer.
The half i beam profile
Excellent build. An alternative to the sandpaper grip - skateboard grip tape - Black Magic or another quality brand
I actually own a track saw but I have to clamp it every time I use it as it slips. The sandpaper on the back is a great idea and i think I'll try it on mine.
Sandpaper backing is a nice touch👍👍
Hello from Australia!, I have subscribed!, the best DIY track saw on the internet!. You are a genius my friend. Where did you buy the metal C-channel's?, and what are the dimensions for both channels?.
I agree I would like to know this same thing
looks like a standard T Track (bottom) table saw guide (top)
Where is the answer to this question, does look like 2 x C channels, but need paired exactly, that is the clincher. So where do they come from?
@@jameshaveron4197, you can grab them pretty much every where, even wish has them at you know, wish prices.
This is US / Can market, but dimensions should help anyone search for right material, match outside dimension with inside of track for your saw, X2 for the wall thickness in the channel dimensions on the site, eg, a 1" channel will take a .75" inside with .125" walls, hope it helps someone. www.metalsupermarkets.com/metals/aluminum/aluminum-6063-channel/
Great job- wondered about using laminate for this. How is it holding up over time?
I would say for the application he using it for, it probably is holding up just fine? Now if he was taking it to job sites and throwing it in the back of his truck, dropping it on the ground etc, then I’d say that laminate wouldn’t last very long!
@@drumfanatik316 I think it's better than plywood for this, since it steals less cut depth
Lots of tedious hard work! Great job! Great share!
I still have two units that I made from two pieces of cab-ply about 37 years ago . I made one 98" long and another 54' long . Thanks for sharing Your build .
I have had mine for over 20 years 3/8 and 1/4 plywood and they still work
Thank you for the inspiration and idea for the track. I stole your idea but simplified it a little. Like you I used the laminate flooring but had to glue two pieces together to give me enough width and instead of a U track rail I used an L track rail. This allowed me to use a U section attached directly to parallel fence that came with my saw. I turned the fence upside down so it cleared the table. Attached a strip of wood to the fence with a minimal recess to allow the strip of wood to contact the full length of the saw baseplate. I then attached the U channel guide to the wood. It doesn’t matter that the screw heads protrude into the channel as it sits over the L shape of the track. This negates having to construct special brackets to fix the guide to the saw. As long as you are careful positioning the track against the stop there is no play in the guide as it travel along the rail. I also taped some nonslip matting (like you use to stop items slipping in the car) instead of the sandpaper to the base. Hope this helps someone who hasn’t the skills, like me, to make a bracket.
Great stuff!! What were the measurements of the two aluminium profiles you used (including thickness)?
Great idea using vinyl flooring. Thanks for sharing
Good stuff! I’m still using the 6’ level with clamps. It takes forever to setup!
Yes, I did the same before this track saw. Thanks
it's interesting.tanks👍

Great job!!! I am tired of struggling to break down 4 x 8 sheets on the TS. Much easier with a DIY guide rail. I am making an 8ft and a 4ft....WHERE did you find alum channel that fits over the other channel?...I am thinking to just cut a strip of HDPE to ride IN the channel but your solution is much simpler requiring no modifications to the saw base plate. THANKS!
metalsupermaket perhaps, see my reply for detail
Nice job GRINwood ,thanks for the free plans appreciated.
Great Idea and a really nice video! thank you so much! I'll do this!
Excellent homemade tracksaw. I'm going to make one as well based on this. A couple of questions though. (1) Were there any shorter screws available so that you could avoid the need to have to grind off the extra that poked through on the bottom? (2) if shorter screws were not available, was it even really necessary to grind the extra off, considering that you were going to tape the bottom and attach the sandpaper as a non-slip solution? (3) would it have been better to cut the ends of the track saw and make the first cut using the circular saw after the sandpaper had been attached to the bottom? Thanks again for an excellent DIY video!
1 - a shorter screw would mean less screw to wood engagement and probably be pretty weak. 2 - if you do not grind the ends they could create problems in the future, sandpaper might hide them but the points do leave an uneven surface. 3 - trimming after taping would probably be faster but it would cost a bit more and waste a bit more.
11:50 You can re-purpose that rip cut jig. Cut it shorter, screw thicker plywood to the bottom, and install a miter bar. You now have a tapering jig for the table saw to cut tapered table legs.
That's a solid guide rail, right there. Decent design. Peace
Very elegantly done, my compliments! Thanks for sharing, and greetings from the Netherlands
Great job. Seems completely over-engineered, but still a great job
if u think this is over-engineered keep watching other diy track saw videos lol
Funny, when someone builds a quality tool from scraps around the shop that is equal to anything you can buy for hundreds of dollars it’s “over built”. I suspect that if you were sitting on God’s knee you would complain his knee is too bony. Why not show us your, “not over built version”. Would love to see your workmanship on display!
@@tcl5853, my comment was not a criticism. I just think having a normal straight edge down the side would have given the same result, without the need for the 2 channels to run inside each other
