  • Every time I make a mistake in the gym (multiple times a week), I just laugh at myself, and someone will usually tell me a story about when they did something even more embarrassing. Remember, the gym is a place to grow, not to be perfect

    • Everybody has a story when stepping into the gym for the first time or even coming back. Mistakes like these are good for learning and not making the same mistake again which is called development. 💪🏼

  • When I was going to a gym I would occasionally use an unfamiliar device wrong... there would always be someone that would kindly show me the proper way to use the equipment to the best advantage... always polite, nice... but that was the in the last century. Mr. Swoll, you do an incredible service!

    • Don't forget, though, there are unconventional ways to use a machine. I did glute ham raises with a lat pull-down seat before. One of the gyms I worked out at didn't have a standing hamstring curl machine, so I used the leg extension. I faced the seat, put my hands on the back of it with my arms straight, and I curled my legs behind me one at a time. Boom! Standing hamstring curl.

    • When I first started at the gym, I was doing bicep curls with absolutely HORRENDOUS form. A guy came up to me and gave me shit about it. A girl on the bench next to me calmly asked him "How's your workout going?" His gaze shot towards her and he snarkly stated "Don't worry about my workout!" She laughed and responded "No but you should, and worry a lot less about his." It's sad that some people will always judge, but it doesn't need to affect me or you. Let it slide. Their judgements are their problem

    • Nah man, especially not if its a woman, otherwise you end up on tiktok. If I see someone about to kill themselves with ego lifting and terrible form I'll alert gym staff. If a dude hits failiure I'll bail him out, but I aint gonna offer help unless its asked for, seen too many videos of a dude offering someone help on their last set only to be met with "YOU SAYING I AINT FUCKING STRONG ENOUGH TO LIFT IT BRUH". Same with females, I've seen videos of women faking failiure and then when a dude comes to pull the weight off their chest / back they post them on tiktok with "sexist gym bro thinks women can't lift" I fucking hate what social media and tiktok especially has turned gym culture into. It wasn't always this way... A month ago I had a woman complain to staff about me grunting while deadlifting 5 wheels because it was "interupting face time with her friend"

  • I think making mistakes in the gym is exhilarating. Like you’re learning and improving over it. A couple times I messed up on squats and miscalculated how many reps I could manage in a set, or how I looked when I first started implementing plyometric training or Olympic lifts such as snatches and clean and jerks. Everytime I made a fool of myself I just smiled and laughed it off. Then I think to myself, so ahh that’s what I’m supposed to do now. With this mindset I found it way easier to push myself in the gym or just in any fitness endeavor. Just smile and keep pushing on. Ever since then I have felt like I am training harder and getting stronger than ever before. Trust me if you just go out there and train without worrying about making a fool out of yourself you will become a much better athlete overall. This applies to those who are experienced as well but are too complacent in their training routines

It was my last set to my biceps were burnt. When I struggled to lift it, first the left weight fell off, then the right one, and they both rolled right toward big guys lifting real weights. So I just did about 4 more curls of the bare bar to failure. Fortunately, I have no dignity so it's all good.

  • I go to the gym at 1, 2, or 3 O'clock in the morning specifically because I was afraid to make mistakes, and still am afraid. However, admittedly, I've only made one...maybe 2 mistakes. I've made so few mistakes due to my routine (or so I like to think). Before every workout, I spend anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour on the treadmill, and while I'm warming up, what I'm really doing is watching and observing. I think to myself "that person is in great shape, they're using this machine, I'm going to emulate exactly what they're doing when I hop on that machine". Funnily enough, both mistakes I made at the gym were so small, and the gym was so empty, that I immediately felt like someone was laughing at me, and I left after only being in the gym for about 10 minutes. The first mistake I made was not knowing how to unlock the leg press. I set my weight, hopped in, and couldn't figure out how to unlock it instantly, and my face just turned red, and I left. The second time was not knowing how to adjust the seat at the smith-machine. Both times I had gotten home, and was immediately depressed. I was sad. I worked up the motivation and courage to go to the gym, and was crushed by my own mental weakness. I believe this is what happens when you don't feel like you belong. As if the membership other people pay is somehow superior to the membership you pay. Fast-forward a year, and I've got some funny moments, that are only funny because I learned how to not care. Things like: - Hopping on the leg press and accidentally farting the second my legs were under pressure. - finishing my workout only to notice that my sweatshirt was covered in pre-workout, because I was in a hurry and the wind blew the mix all over my hoodie in the parking lot. - having a piece of equipment malfunction in a non-harmful way. (just last week, I turned the treadmill off, after 45 min, only to find out that every time I pushed the stop button, it got faster and faster LOL)

  • Thanks joey, I been in a gym in the past but never gave it a shot because I feel sell concous of what others think of me, I'm kinda nervous, but I'll think I'll give it another try.👍
