I have not once ever had someone “intimidate” me, make fun of me, or tell me I’m causing issues. Nobody at the gym gives a fuck what you’re doing as long as you are respectful and keep to yourself.

    • This is it, 99% of time people don't care about what you do, if they look most likely they're checking out if you're leaving the machine or they have accidentally put the eyes on you during set break. Occasionally I look at the girls because their outfit caught my eye and want to ask where can i buy it 😂I can understand the fear tho, people can be very judgmental outside of the gym towards people who look different so it's easy to have that fear in their head. I catch myself too thinking sometimes that I don't belong in the gym however, keep in mind that going and showing is the best you can do for your health (if you enjoy strength workout).

    • My experience has always been that most (keyword most) of those huge guys who look very intimidating tend to be the nicest people ever. Like this one guy with forearms bigger than my thighs, bald and with tattoos from his scalp to his fingertips. Dude was just a kind man, worried about raising his daughter and would gladly help out anyone, while never giving unsolicited advice. The worst people in a gym tends to be the younger ones who have just had a taste of gains/confidence and think they own the world now.

  • I was a PF member for over 3 years until one of the managers told me I was making too much noise while lifting - mind you this was at 4 in the morning and the only person in the gym besides him (or her - I wasn’t sure). Thinking I would get sympathies if I talked to another manager, I called in the morning and got to speak to the AM shift manager. Instead the guy told me that he had been told about the incident and he pulled up my profile from their database, then started reading my past “transgressions”, which to my surprise was being documented like employers do with their employees. Two weeks later, I canceled my membership at PF, and signed up at EOS. I never looked back.

It's been extremely tough but the end goal is worth it. I realized that the body builders and heavyweight lifters are some of the nicest and most encouraging guys you can meet in the gym. They legitimately help anyone they see struggling and will go out of their way to give you a hand if you need it. This is across the board and I have NEVER met one with an opposite attitude.

    • Lifting is some seriously straining stuff. If one has the grit to bear through it, I can imagine they’re pretty reasonable people. A lot of these people might still be pricks outside of the gym, but inside the gym all that matters is weights. Everyone can relate to the pain of lifting. Help a bro out so eventually another bro will spot you.

    • Very true, started working out at a snap fitness because it was closer to my house. I usually go at 4 am and was super reserved at first because the only people who are there at 4 am are the super healthy dudes. I started asking them to spot me on some of my bench press stuff and I gotta say, they love the opportunity to talk to you about fitness stuff and help out. It's like having a free personal trainer every time I talk to them. Sure they grunt and drop weights, but who gives a shit really, they're the nicest people you'll meet and since they're already jacked they just want to help other people improve too.

I put the break on and as I was getting out it slid down and almost hit me, luckily I didn't have a bunch of weight on it at the time. The lunk alarm went off and one of the staff came over and started yelling at me saying that if I didn't know how to use the machines I shouldn't be on them. I told him it broke and I could have been seriously hurt. He checked and indeed it was broken. So basically if you make any loud noise to include machines breaking they punish and embarrass the hell out of you in front of everyone.

    • Ephesians‬ ‭6:10‭-‬18‬ ‭Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; and your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints. The bible is no old book. You have to really let Christ open your eyes; to see the world in shambles. Many people say it's a religion to lock up people in chains, and say it's a rule book.. why? Because people hate hearing the truth, it hurts their flesh, it's hurts their pride, it's exposes on what things have they done..people love this world so much, s*x, money, power, women, supercars.. things of this world. Still trying to find something that can fill that emptiness in your heart. You can't find that in this world.. only in Christ, the bible is no chains, it's a chainbreaker. Breaking your sins into pieces... Repent now, and turn back to the true Lord only.. God bless.😢😢

    • @@johnathanstoker7145 It's mostly a matter of deciding which features you want. If you are never going to use the pool, choose a gym that doesn't have one, or you will be paying for it in your membership fees. If lifting is your whole goal, a gym in a garage will do. If you can find the motivation you don't really even need a gym. Body weight exercises are fantastic. Pushups, pullups, jogging. I do 100 pushups every single day, and hike 500 feet of elevation, up and down, every day. Rain or shine, gym or no. That's the equivalent of climbing Mt Everest 6 times a year. I'm 55. I did 36,000 pushups last year. I plan to do them again this year. Yes, a bench press has adjustable weights. You will get more concentrated results at a gym. But the single most important factor in your gym is YOU. Now git out there and be the best you you can be!

  • (LONG) I used to go to a local gym regularly when I was in high school. This gym was the place to be for powerlifters, up and coming bodybuilders, MMA fighters, and even just your average gym goer. I was 200lbs with almost no muscle, and was terrified to be there. Everyone was so much stronger than I was, and I felt so small and weak. But as I continued to go there regularly, pushing past that initial fear, I realized the looks I was getting from people were done out of curiosity rather than judgement. The more in shape I got, the more people would look my way. It got to the point that some of the powerlifters and MMA fighters that were usually there when I was started approaching me and telling me they've been seeing my progress and, essentially, that they were proud of me. Some of them would regularly spot me, or show me how to correct my form. They became my gym friends. They were the nicest people I ever encountered at a gym, and I was incredibly sad when the gym was put up for sale. Before that point, I made it down to 185lbs and packed on a bunch of muscle. I was stronger and healthier than I ever was in my life. Years later, I had fallen off my fitness routine and wanted to get back into it, but the cheapest and most accessible gym in my area was a Planet Fitness. Let me tell you, those were the worst several months I spent in a gym. The vibe was completely the opposite of the local gym. No sense of community, no one lending a helping hand, everyone only cared about themselves, and the looks I was getting were stained in pure judgement. The weight ranges and selections were piss poor, and I felt like I was walking on eggshells everywhere I went. Tried to cancel my membership only to find out it was $100+ to cancel before the yearly contract was up. I stopped going to the gym entirely because it was not a good environment to work out in, which is INCREDIBLY important to have. Went back to cancel when the yearly contract was done, only to find out I was a few days late and the contract was renewed, forcing me to pay that $100+ to cancel. I bit the bullet and paid, as a college student with a minimum wage job and probably no more than 300 bucks in my savings. Planet Fitness did the exact opposite of what a gym is supposed to do; motivate someone to get in shape and find a community of like minded individuals who help each other and promote a healthy lifestyle. Rant over lol.

    • The vast majority of people in the vast majority of gyms are super nice, and no one's judging you, simply put, you're just not that important. The looks you think you're getting are either imagined by you, incidental (you're in line of sight), or normal human behavior (people look at other people). And if you keep going, the looks you're getting are ones of recognition and appreciation/kudos. I'm a regular, and I see so many people, of all shapes and sizes, start coming in, and then disappear after a month or two. That's a look (of curiosity) you're definitely going to get: hmm, I wonder if this person will still be here in a month. It's not the "lunks" you gotta worry about, it's the jokers who pop in, do half-assed sets using crappy form, are on their phone the whole time, don't rerack weights properly, don't unload the bar and don't clean up after themselves. I ended up not using it so I read through my contract and found that they have a $59 cancellation fee. Since i still had multiple months left on the contract, I typed out a letter referencing that section of the contract and stating that they were authorized to remove the $59 from my bank account to cancel the contract but that I would no longer be paying any monthly fees. You usually have to pay another month's worth. Most people know this but they forget. Then what happens is they try to fight that and what happens is is you're given the number to corporate. You probably asked for it yourself. So you called them and they told you they cannot cancel the account and that you have to go or call the gym. So nice try with your story but this is what Bread left out between the lines.

  • As a former staff member at a Planet Fitness based in Australia, I took a rather different approach. Being a devout gym junkie and an intermediate lifter, I always sought to welcome everyone and even the powerlifters and bodybuilders (unwanted according to policy) whom didn’t want to cause trouble and just train. Every tour I’d lead, I ensured I got to know the person, have a laugh, ask them questions and if I knew they were a lifter, as a form of courtesy, I’d tell them that we don’t have deadlifting platforms, squat racks, barbells to perform your military, or bench and the fact that our dumbbells are maxed out at 34kg (75lbs). I’d always walk around the gym and chat to anyone and everyone in between sets and also assist with explaining and demonstrating how a machine is used, and to also spot people on the smith machines if they needed a push. I loved watching all the new members become more confident and comfortable over time, and seeing their growth and muscle gain/weight loss. It was the best parts of being on the job. I only ever used the lunk alarm to call my colleague (when they’re on the gym floor) and also just for a laugh. I never rung the alarm for more than .5 of a second because I know that alarm is ridiculously loud. If there was someone seriously smashing weights or the clanging of weights from the cable towers (obnoxious and rings throughout the gym, especially when it ain’t heavy) I would come up to them when they’re off set, and speak to them in a manner which is respectful, and at the bare minimum, humane. I’d never kick them out, or dish out warnings, I’d say just be wary and try your best not to slam weights as you may impact those around you (it is very startling at times). It was a fun job, I didn’t necessarily believe in the philosophy of planet fitness, but I’d still enforce the rules, just very lightly as I wanted everyone to focus on themselves and train hard. Funny part is, the pizza and muffin days, I’d force people not to go anywhere near them and at times, would stand at the bench the food is on, and just say, “nothing to see here keep walking” and just laugh about it. I hated this idea of dishing out processed foods and sugars to have a fun, comfortable environment. I mean, I do like that, but the best way to impose this idea is by supporting those who come in, help them in their journey, and lastly, don’t feed them shit food which only impedes their journey and progression. Fun job, but trust me, not all employees are harsh or all planet fitness gyms the same.

    • Sounds pretty much like the PF I go to right now. It’s operated by mostly mid-20s kids who keep the place very clean and remember your name. Been nothing but a good experience for me so far. It’s definitely heavy on the cardio equipment (probably 60% of the gym floor and never about 25% capacity) but I’m happy with it overall.

  • I joined about 4 months ago. Ive never witnessed the lunk alarm go off. My biggest problem is people sitting on equipment on their phones for way too long. Maybe they could tone down the anti gym-bro position. There is stuff to be learned from experienced weight trainers even if its just watching proper form.

    @neilkearney6822@neilkearney68225 ай бұрын
    • But that's the reason beside the cheap price tag, by the way that's how they get to keep the cheap price tag, why did you go to this gym. Many people go to this gym because they don't want to go to a more mainstream gym where there are people that are intimidating. Maybe it's not so bad for girls but I can remember when I first started going to the gym it was very intimidating guys doing supersets hogging three different machines getting upset while they're routed out because they are going to lose steam on their super set and they need to have all three of these pieces of equipment for themselves for the next half hour it's ridiculous. I think of planet fitness as a stepping stone if you want to do anything very serious with your weight lifting. If you can lift a big weights and you want no nonsense and you want to be a gym bro then go to another gym once you get strong enough.. I don't see the issue. Planet fitness is not there just because you're poor, planet fitness is there because people that don't really maintain their fitness all too well have more of an incentive to go somewhere where they can feel comfortable

  • I got a membership there because it was cheap, near my place of work, and I needed a place to shower. But the thing that is the most irksome is the horrible, loud music. Seriously, they play mostly unidentifiable music that isn't pop, isn't rock, isn't interesting, just loud. It's like dance music as imagined by someone who doesn't dance but likes the Night at the Roxbury skit on SNL.

  • As mentioned in the video, I think it just depends on the location you go to. I’ve been going to one close to me for over a year now. Never heard a lunk alarm, never got thrown out for wearing a tank top or having a huge water bottle, never been bothered by the staff. Lost 80lbs and put on muscle. If you have a good location there’s nothing wrong with Planet Fitness especially when all the other gyms charge an arm and a leg for a membership.

It's cheap, affordable, has a decent selection of weights and the biggest issue I had was theres no space for dead lifting, and not enough benches for people wanting to lift. Everything was well maintained and great. People judge Planet Fitness because A. they have a shitty club near them (this is true for ALL gyms it doesnt matter where you go, a shit gym is a shit gym) B. they don't understand that you dont HAVE to eat the free pizza they give out OR drink the soda's they have there C. aren't looking to get fit and believe everything everyone tells them, so a bunch of guys making a youtube video being assholes in the gym somehow means it's a bad place to be.

  • In the past, when i went to Planet Fitness, more frequent a lot of what what was mentioned did happen, but also a lot I did not experience. Like I have asked an employee about the lunk alarm, and what i heard was it mainly happened accidentally. Yet i have heard people clanking plenty of times, very loudly to the point of it being annoying for me, and the alarm never sounded. Also, I was among the peaple that used at least four weights on a machine like on the seated leg press or even a back extension with at least three until I got higher on the amount i could use, i was never scolded for four weights or using certain machines on the highest setting. If I would have been scolded for having 4 weights by the personal trainer there or any other employee, I would have canceled my membership there ASAP. Another thing I never experienced there during my more frequent times there was the free pizza and donuts. I heard the pizza being advertised over the music playing constantly, but I never saw it, and i eventually asked and was told something along the lines of, about how covid was the reason it was not happening. I may have missed some things in my comment but at the risk of being redundant I know the main reason I could have been scolded was the high weights, and if that would have happened it would have gotten me to leave and thankfully it never did.
