  • Hi Jonathan, I recently had a discussion with someone who was heavily against claimed Ukraine videos of Ukrainians getting picked up from their homes and “forced” to join the army. I explained that this is not different how it worked in The Netherlands during war time and during the Cold War period and even behond. If you got drafted and didn’t show up, the MPs payed you a visit. Hence, in my opinion, Ukrainians should not get a refugee status based on escape the draft. I realize it is easy for me to say, way back from the Ukrainian frontline and whiteout a family to take care of. Cheers, Rick

  • 22:20 - The important thing is that the equipment arrive in Ukraine - not who is paying for it or if anyone is making a profit in providing the equipment. That private companies are buying up old stuff on the open market to resell to Ukraine or allies allocating military assistance, they are providing a valuable service by combing the world for available assets and funneling them where they are needed. You can say they are the lubricant that allow the West to keep up support for Ukraine.

  • Johnno, with regards to forcing Ukrainian nationals living abroad (men and women) to return to Ukraine to help out in its fight against Russia, I think it's such a unique - and important case, that effects us 'all' in Europe so much, I honestly think they should do it. Now, I'm not sitting here in my cosy living room condoning sending others to die for us, what I propose is for Ukraine to make it mandatory for every Ukrainian to at least do something to help! This is a war of sheer survival, and they'll be no country for them to return too if they don't help out. Imagine if everyone ran away! There's so many things they could do without actually fighting on the frontlines. Woman can work in munitions factories, like they did in both world wars, while the older woman ran creches for their children. Old men guarded border posts in quiet areas, reference the UK homeward. Someone has to drive the supply trucks, work the railways, man the factories, guard warehouses from sabotage, and so on. There's a whole list of things they could do without putting themselves in danger physically. Unless they really are just total leeches that always want to take, and never give anything back! I can't believe they're all like that, though. But this is such an exceptional and vital case, I have to support it. The vision I always have in my head, as but one example, is of an old man, an overweight middle aged woman, and a skinny 16 year year old with 20/20 vision, all sat in an observation tower on an isolated part of the Belarus border. Even a guy in a wheel chair can work a radio, or fire a flair. I rest my case before I end up writing a mini novel here. Slava Ukraini ❤ forever!

  • 04:50 - I think it is highly unlikely that those who get elected choose to renounce Cameron's commitment of £3bn in yearly military assistance to Ukraine. They would be hard pressed to give any valid and accepted reason if they did. So £3bn would be the baseline going forward on top of which would come supplemental or extraordinary aid.

  • On the chat bot summary idea (sorry, Philosopher of language and AI, and AI researcher, and I refuse to call what we have these days "AI"), yes. I often do not have time to listen to all of your videos. I often listen to your hits and losses video now, and then have to fast forward through your other content unless something particular important happened. So, an on the fly summary would be awsome. If something is particularly important, then I will go watch the full video when I have a moment, rather than possibly skip something important all together. probably would lead me to watch more videos, rather then less.

  • Can confirm using AI to summarise your videos has been useful for me to digest much content in a short amount of time (i have been doing the same thing using OpenAI API) he's right about Claude being much more powerful than Open AI (although using local LLMs has proven to be just as effective if not more so in digesting the video content), I'd highly recommend taking him up on his offer! that kind of data in a vector database will allow you to pull some interesting stats from all the front line updates you have done, as well as spot trends where you missed them before, not to mention chapters in your videos and even a full transcription for captions, what he is/has managed so far, sounds beyond useful in so many ways, perfect for perplexing pontification!

I have taken along road to understanding that which matters and the worries of youth trying to make so many happy that didn't really matter. The task before us matters, with world security and some kind of democracy for all so that we may move forward. So to all the idealists, I salute the rights you have to protest and voice an opinion, but always remember many died to give you and the world that right, and it is up to all of us to make sure we uphold that sacrifice for our futures.

  • Mr Pierce, I am a 35-year-old American, US Army veteran, and I have followed your channel for over a year. I respect your work, research, and your attempts to objectively report the facts on the war in Ukraine, as well as making good-willed arguments why the West ought to act strongly in support of Ukraine. On those fronts, I am your ally. I am also here to challenge you to grow beyond your leftist thinking. Socially, I am very liberal, but your kind (and it reminds me of a popular American blogger, Jake Broe) always fail to criticize the obvious hypocrisy in western governments. It was Angela Merkel's green (Russia friendly) policies that filled Russia's war chest and made the EU wholly dependent on a war monger. It was the leftists that refused to fund NATO and US military (here as well as the EU). Obama's DoD scrapped the F22 and cut funding for American aircraft carriers. He mocked Senator Mitt Romney when he said Russia was the greatest geopolitical adversary of the West. Even now, 6+ civil and criminal investigations have materialized against Trump PRECISELY in time to be center stage for the elections.... Surely you cannot believe these are coincidences. Putin has a ready reply for any calls of autocracy as kangaroo courts in New York wipe their rumps with the US Constitution. Every one of those cases is COMPLETELY UNPRECIDENTED. If you have not read enough to know this, you know nothing of our laws and constitution. I genuinely respect your opinions, and I hope this is one of the many comments you claim to read and respond to. I listen (mostly not watching because I am working) to all of your videos, aside from the "full front-line," and it would make my day if you were to politely opine to this challenge.

All good when you live there, use the public infrastructure and all that your ancestors built and bled for, but when all that comes under threat you selfishly run away? There was a time when being called a coward was a title of shame. There isn't anything immoral in sending Ukrainians dodging the draft back to Ukraine. All that being said, there are more jobs in the military besides front line duty. Personally, I prepare myself by learning to fly with drones now (suggest your boys do the same, you never know). I would be scared, but if duty calls I think I wouldn't hesitate for one second. What is my life worth if I am not willing to sacrifice it to give my daughter an opportunity to live free, as I have?

No country should be able to take control of an individuals body especially if they are victimising one group of people rather than asking the whole able bodied adult population. Sorry but hiding behind the laws don't make a thing right or moral.

I replied that the state has the monopoly and authority to use violence. This is simply a fact, whether you like it or not. I never said that the state enacting violence under any circumstance is always right. I made the argument that drafting men to defend the country is right, and that deporting men to that country who fled the draft is morally just. You are talking about nazi's and killing Jews. You're not at all talking about what I am talking about.

Apparently only France would choose to beat Hitler in Poland, because stopping Putin in Ukraine is the same thing. It is as foolish saying the US or UK won't put troops in Ukraine as it would have been saying they wouldn't put American or British troops on the ground in Poland or France, it led to them putting them in Germany itself. Realistically they don't know what is going to happen with Putin, even being forced to put them in Russia. Ruling that out only greenlights Putin to go further,. Stupid.

Or would our leaders be booted out of office for a more “non confrontational” candidate. It seems we are far removed from our “greatest generation” who lived through, and fought in such times.

They wouldn't be very useful if they were just 'so and so donated some stuff, such a place got hit by a middle, Ukraine needs stuff and Donald is a douchebag. Maybe 2 or 3 sentences on each subject. I watch all your videos but I have plenty of time to do so. For people who have less time might find a summary good and can pick and choose which videos to watch.

  • The idea of sending conscientious objectors back to Ukraine and denying them the right to asylum is not a "moral minefield". It is perfectly straight forward. You only need to read the Geneva Convention on Refugees and all will be clear. Claiming asylum or refugee status (there is a difference that we can ignore here) is a so-called subjective right that singatory states have to examine from case to case. That means if I, assumeing that I were a male ukrainian that Ukraine would like to conscript, claim refugee status in a signatory country (i.e. every european country) then my subjective fear concerning any eventual danger to my person or health, for example russians shooting at me were I to be conscripted, not only must be taken into consideration but it is beneficial to my claim and its chances of sucess. Most male refugees from the middle east who have fled to Europe are here because of this right that they have under international law. That explains why there are so many young male-refugees here. They often say: "if I had stayed in my country I would have had to kill or be killed". Sorry JP, I know that you would like to send them back, but that ain't gonna happen. And that is part of our humanistic heritage that you or the AFD can't change overnight. But I wouldn't mind if Denys Davidov who fled to Switzerland to avoid conscription although he is a pilot and could aim an F16 at Putin were sent back. He said some things that border on racism.

    @bertoldriesenteil1430@bertoldriesenteil143017 күн бұрын
    • I have no views on sending me back. Unfortunately, you do this too often: you misinterpret my position and claim it is something it is not. I have said before that Ukraine really needs those people, objectively - they need an army. But I have not given my own opinion on whether I would send them back if I was one such country. Because ?I? don't know what I would do. The moral minefield bit is this: " is a so-called subjective right that signatory states have to examine from case to case." ie it is no overwhelmingly clear-cut. Hence some countries saying they will and some saying they won't. Also, I would be interested in what your opinion of differentiating refugee status on conscription is - would a Finn be entitled to refugee status? If not, why not? It is merely to do with war, then surely conscription/mobilization during war is a morally compromised idea. The core issue is forcing one to do something one does not want to do - it's acceptable unless there's a higher level of probability of harm. But where's the demarcation there?

      @ATPGeo@ATPGeo17 күн бұрын
    • @@ATPGeo I didn't say or imply that you would "send them back". I was just making the point that there is no point in reporting on this issue because it hasn't a hope in hell of happening as international law stands. You might just as well discuss whether the moon is made of cheese or does god exist? Oh actually I think you have probably done that in the past. What I do "to often" is not 'accuse' you of believing something that you don't believe in. But I do try to point out to you when your reporting is ambivalent or ambiguous, which it occasionally is.

      @bertoldriesenteil1430@bertoldriesenteil143017 күн бұрын
    • @@ATPGeo What "some countries will or won't do" is irrelevant to this discussion because what they can or cannot do is dictated by the Geneva Convention on Refugees that they, the signatories were all obliged to incorporate into their respective national legislation. If a country doesn't adhere to the principles set out there (like the UK for example at present) then they are in contravention of the convention and subject to internatunal scrutiny and sanctions. Subjective rights are indeed clear cut. I beg to disagree. If a ukrainian male refugee says that he is afraid of being shot at, etc, by russians were he in Ukraine, be will automatically be recognised as a refugee. That is what a refugee is, whether one likes it or not. Those rights exist for us too. In Eritrea, Somalia and Mozambique, Uganda, Berundi, etc 14 year old boys were forced to join the army and massacre civilians. If there were no international agreement that would stop them being sent back if they fled then the world would be a different place. But most of this is irrelevant in relation to Ukraine because the backlog of asylum and refugee claims in Europe is so great that the authorities do not have the capacity to process all these cases. The process of claiming refugee status can last months, even years. If you are turned down (which hardly ever happens), you can appeal and hire a good lawyer specialised in asylum law. Because of this backlog and burocracy the EU passed a bill that makes ukrainian refugees exempt from this procedure. For all intese and purposes they are treated as any other EU national. They can settle in any EU country of their choosing and claim welfare benefits, etc. I am not a great fan of thr EU, but they got this bit right. Now try sending them back to Ukraine. So whether this is a "moral minefield" for you is irrelevant. You, I and nobody else has a say. The moral deliberation was done in 1947. Try overturning that!

    • @@ATPGeo A Finn could only claim refugee status in another country if he or she claimed that he or she was in danger of physical harm or persecution in Finland. So that includes things like war, pogroms, torture or any threat of physical or mental torture, oppression due to racial, religious, ethnic or homophobic disrimination, etc. All the bad things as it were. Unlikely in Finland at present. He or she could also claim political asylum, which is harder to obtain if they can demonstrate that they were subject to state sanctions in their country of origin because of what they say, or express, in a painting, film, poem or KZhead blog for example. So people like you and me I guess.

    • @@ATPGeo "conscription during wartime is a moraly compromised idea". Why? What "demarcation"? Stop thinking through morals. Geopolitics is more about accepting what the world is like than what you or others would like it to be like. You tend to vassilate between both poles but you should mediate them for peace of mind. States make their own laws and they pass laws of conscription in order to survive. The Spartans built their whole culture around this principle. It didn't help them much though.
