HOW TO MAKE A PALM (coconut) LEAF HAT (EASY TUTORIAL)

If you are looking how to make a coconut palm leaf hat you've found the right video. In this instructional video we will be making and shaping a cowboy palm leaf hat out of a palm leaf.
Learn to make a coconut palm leaf bowl in my new video here: HOW TO MAKE A (coconut) PALM LEAF BOWL (easy step by step tutorial) • HOW MAKE COCONUT PALM ...
This video is different than the other palm leaf hat videos you will find on youtube. Most of them are confusing and hard to follow, so I decided to upload my own making the steps easier to understand. Follow the video step by step and pay attention to the end if you want to learn how to make your own hat from a palm leaf. This primitive technology / knowledge is actually very helpful if you ever needed to fashion up a hat using the materials often found on desert islands, beaches etc.
I will warn you now, it might take a few days or even a few weeks to learn how to make this hat well. It will take time and patience to fully understand the weaving of the hat. So dont give up if you cant do it straight away. I myself had to study videos like this and practice for 2 weeks before I could make my first respectable hat. So make sure to book mark this and watch it a few times if you want to learn how to weave your own palm leaf hat.
Basic Instructions:
Find the right palm leaf first, it must be very large and very clean. As time goes on you will see why this is so important.
Measure the rough distance around your head with a string so you know how long of a section to cut, but remember to leave at least 2 inches on both sides.
Usually the middle section of the coconut palm leaf is the best place to cut the palm leaf, and there is enough material to make up to 6 hats on 1 single leaf!
Now cut that section is half and you have 2 perfectly usable portions for crafting your hat. Remember depending on which side of the leaf you are using the instructions may be in reverse.
Trim down the crown section as shown in the video and begin to cut 2 small triangles in both ends to be used later to tie the hat together.
Once you master the crown, you are ready to move onto the rim, and depdning on how many over and unders you use while weaving you while make a small or large rim.
If you get past the rim without trouble you can now start to form the top of the hat which happens to be the most confusing and difficult part, so make sure to watch towards the end of the tutorial video so you dont miss a step on this crucial section.
Make sure to tighten your hat weaving as you go to keep the hat firm and beautiful. If you like making things with your hands you should love making this hat. The geometry is beautiful and it will never end up in a landfill or destroy our planet in the process.

    • I thought of primitive water distillation recently that involves weaving. basically, the starting idea was a long piece of giant bamboo, or something similar to put above a pot of boiling water. The bamboo is "bent" back down so as the steam passes into it, it cools enough by the time it reaches the other side and precipitates back down into a collection bowl. Then I thought what if no bamboo available. Well, just weave a similar device from fronds. The part over the water would be thick to let enough water get it, and then tapers down to a thin side at the other end. and the opening of the part over the boiling water would angled as well to allow the most amount of water in. Sounds do-able. Anyways, wondered if you had any thoughts about off-grid water distillation.

  • Awesome video. You just gave me ideas for ways to make shade umbrellas for my neighbor. I'm thinking it would be easy to back weave more fronds into the brim to weave it larger. Her plants keep burning in the sun and the shades could just sit on her tomato cages.

I keep buying hats when I can just make one of these at the beginning of the week and it'll stay green most the week and then just make a new one next week with the castings for my palm trees! Shoot I can try about seven different kinds of palm leaf it all look like they would work as long as they were prepared properly!

Your hands obscured the view so I could not even stop and count. Your music is not as educational as of you were to explain what you are actually doing.
