6 space technologies we can use to improve life on Earth | Danielle Wood

Danielle Wood leads the Space Enabled research group at the MIT Media Lab, where she works to tear down the barriers that limit the benefits of space exploration to only the few, the rich or the elite. She identifies six technologies developed for space exploration that can contribute to sustainable development across the world -- from observation satellites that provide information to aid organizations to medical research on microgravity that can be used to improve health care on Earth. "Space truly is useful for sustainable development for the benefit of all peoples," Wood says.

  • I'm sure this lady has had a good up bringing and education to match. It probably hasn't been easy but she has achieved her goals.... Although she has noble thoughts about what space has to offer the less fortunate people. I think she hasn't thought of what these people want or, really need. Again, as a global citizen, people in developing or, war torn countries need stability and the opportunity to work and prosper in their own way. Lets have them there, then let them decide on where they wish to go or, do.

    • We already have gazillions of practical creative solutions. What we don’t have here in the USA is at least 80 million individuals who are well-informed, free of disinformation and misinformation, on all the major issues of today AND devoting their time, energy, resources, and talents to the political process to make sure that only the most Loving/most Wise among us become our public servants.

    • LiftedSlayer Zeitgest has been debunked numerous times, especially the cult of mithras. We live in a captialist society not because it is morally right but because it is the best economic system to date that allows for a great deal of upward mobility, although that process can be hindered by crony captialism. Inequality is inevitable for people may be born equal but we are not created equal.

  • Space research is extremely important for our understanding of knowledge of what’s out there. Other than man made As of 2019 no discovery has been found that was hoped. All this effort invested for such little benefits. Yet we have to go door to door to beg for coins to fund medical research. The rich have us living like puppets. To think we are free but must follow rules made by Very well off people in governments . 🤔

    • SMB NateVevo do you mean connected? Well it takes technology to travel into space. Look up pictures of mission control it's all computers, they use cameras to see what's going on, telecommunication to stay on contact, in the beginning they had to use math, science technology to figure out fuel etc..

  • Engineers are so naïve. I like their excitement but they have no clue how our world works. In the last 6,000 years we had only 150 years without wars in our planet. We have better technology but we never got a better heart. A famous economist once said "everybody works for the banks" . Most of the problems in the world today are created by the banks. Any improvement in quality of life in Africa will go immediately to pay interest rates to the banks. Africa actually supports the wealth of Europe. The colonial system never changed. Before they used weapons to control people, now they use banks and corruption. Before the British left the colonies they found a way to leave those countries in big financial debt so they could still control those countries. The pen is might than the sword. Behind the development of any technology there is a bank. All those technologies she is talking about are created with debt. Who is paying for? Government? no. Banks.

  • I don't know if it is because of me current overexposure to identity politics but i believe a man/woman from the old days would have held a better ted talk. If it would have the old format you would get 17 minutes of space facts and not 5 minutes personal stuff and 5 unstructured facts with a big name plug for her "space enabled" project.
