4K CABVIEW: The last passenger train I will drive?

The last passenger train I will drive? Maybe, it will atleast be the last one for quite some time as I after 14 years in NSB and VY decided that there was a need for change of scenery.
This video was recorded on my very last trip, but fear not, I have more recordings from earlier this year and winter that will be edited and and uploaded for you guys to see. Not only that, I'm not stopping driving trains and I will not stop recording the majestic views I see everyday at work.
This trip goes from Bergen to Voss with the last service of the day departing Bergen 3 minutes past midnight and arriving at Voss at 1:25am. It's a midsummer night and after a very dry and warm period we finally had some solid showers. The sudden change in temperature makes the tunnels warm and damp, which again means we get the piston effect. We basically make CLOUDS in the tunnels due to the pressure change when a train is in the tunnel.

  • Watched you on National Geographic's Europe from above - Norway. I was glad to see you talking about Flåm line. When that part of episode started with satellite image and zooming fjord, I recognized Flåm. Then narrator started to talk about the only connection of Flåm by railway going to Myrdal. I thought: "the only person who can talk about it..." and you appeared and started to talk. Awesome!

  • 363,000 subscribers - what an awesome number! I wonder how many people have been drawn so far in by the stunning scenery and the quality of your productions that they decided to pay a visit and see it for themselves? The answer to that is at least one because I came over late this summer because the pandemic really made me think that things I really wanted to do were best done sooner rather than later! I would be amazed if the amount of extra visitors Western Norway has received as a result of your photographic talents was anything less than a thousand which is an incredible feat from just one person. I'm really looking forward to the pastures new you are going to bring into our living rooms! Good luck with your transition. 🚅😁

  • I have enjoyed your videos after discovering them on You Tube amd they have revived fond memories of our trips to Norway. In 1997 we spent our 25st. wedding anniversary (Silver Wedding) in Bergen, we travelled on the Newcastle to Bergen ferry, now sadly no longer sailing, and stayed over 3 days until the next one returned to the UK. The highlight of our holiday was a trip on the Norway in a Nutshell tour, totally stunning especially the Flaam railway and the ferry trip to Gudvengen which was a very close second. Six years later we went on a Fjord cruise and rediscovered the wonderful Norwegian scenery, probably the highlight of which was a trip up the Dalsnibba by coach when the ship moored at Geiranger, my wife is not a great fan of heights and I remember her white knuckles hanging onto the seat in front during the trip. I was born in Yorkshire and we are very close to our Viking roots, my bit was settled by Norwegian vikings rather than Danes so I almost felt that I was coming home. Many thanks for the memories and good luck in your future enterprises.

  • Dear RCG, thanks so much, this far that is.... ;), for all your beautifull 'films' sofar shot during your travels through the Norwegian landscape.. Being a regular visitor myself for over 20 years already in your beautifull country (mostly by car i must admit) i can only confirm that there is still some scenery to be discovered. I have travelled myself on 'your' trains more than once i.e. the Voss/Bergen track and the Flam/Myrdal track... but i must say having also travelled the Oslo/Trondheim and Dombas/Andalsnes tracks there is indeed more scenery for your viewers to be discovered. So i hope we will 'see' you again soon in a different scenery/environment with same quality of 'films' shot from yout drivers' cabin it has been a hell of a ride and a treat as well sofar. Living in The Netherlands i can only tell you that i know NS (Dutch Railways) always looks for 'change of scenery' for their traindrivers themselves just to keep them 100% to the point and don't let them reach a point of boredom when driving a train too many times over the same track.... although i realise that conditions in Norway are very much different than overhere in The Netherlands. Nevertheless i can fully understand your urge after 14 years that it is time for something completely different. I wish you well and succes in your new upcoming environment!

  • Most importantly, thank you for having the courage to do something different with your switch to freight. I suspect that used to be a lot easier to switch while NSB was running everything. And thank you for taking us along on your new rides! (Looks like you need to read these posts in reverse posting order!)

  • Happy to hear you're still driving trains! Funny, something in me was anticipating co-workers or friends or someone greeting you on the platform in Voss, maybe holding signs or something, for your last trip. :) Hopefully the closing of a chapter was celebrated in some way. Good luck in your new job driving cargo! I look forward to the new things we'll get to see and hear. For one, maybe a less-sad sounding horn? ;)

  • Thanks, RCG, for the great rides through the Norwegian countryside. My grandparents emigrated to the U.S. from the Lillehammer region in the late 19th century and my mother spoke Norwegian as a child. I was born with white hair and have been a tow head all of my life and feel a great affinity for Norway and the Norwegian people. I love to watch Scandinavian mysteries to see what the country looks like. Also the characters all look like my relatives. Your cab rides through the mountains and valleys have really widened my perspective of your (our) beautiful and rugged country. Thanks. I hope that you find your heart's desire. Sometimes good luck comes slowly. Keep making videos. Fred.

My foster brother is from Norway so thanks to your fascinating videos I now can picture places he talks of. I will never be in the cab of a (modern high speed) train, but I have seen a green landscape become a cold winter that turns into a coastline. Colorado will never have trains and transportation like you do. Too spendy? I will always follow these wonderful videos. I hope you enjoy your change of cargo! Thank you

  • Thank you for showing us your railroad world. Thank you to those that are helping you in the background: Elisabeth, chat monitors, and other un-named people (that includes Warmwaffle and wife appearing on trips by Roa). And special thanks to all of those who get blurred for their privacy! Fine folks, all of them. Thank you for showing us the rails, in all directions, at all times, and all seasons. And thank you for the occasional motorcycle tour. Thank you for showing us how to read the signs and signals. It has been fun to turn on the Live Video stream and see how long it takes me to recognize where we are! (no, even *I* don't have the Live Video on ALL of the time) You have motivated me to watch the Rallarvegan videos of mountain bike rides between Haugastol, Finse, Myrdal, and Flam. All of them are highly recommended as we see scenery of the rails from the outside of the snowsheds, routes of older parts of the railroad (before Finsetunnelen), and the original construction roads along the rail route. (also interesting to read about the fire at Hallingskeid Stasjon in 2011) Thank you for showing us the new Ulriken tunnel and a peek into the new shop building at Bergen (it looks completed with a train inside!). Thank you for taking us along on your ferry runs, taking a Flamsbanen train to Bergen for service, and others to Sundland or Lodalen. Thank you for inspiring and mentoring other Norwegian train drivers to record and learn how to edit their videos: "Train Thor", "The Norwegian Traindriver", "GingerRail", and "Frozen Moustache Railroading". Each of them have a unique perspective (and "new" railroad lines). I have also enjoyed the historical videos from "Jernbanemannen, togleder". They are typically low resolution 480p, but sometimes I run RCG video of the same section on a second stream to watch for details and recognize what has changed from 1996 or so.
