Getting those calf cramps in the middle of sleeping is the most rude awakening possible.
Yeah, even worse when it lasts like 15 minutes O_O
During my first bout with cancer, I had a lot of compression fractures in my spine which caused back spasms in my sleep. I didn't sleep for more than 20 minutes before being rudely awakened by a back spasm. It felt like someone kicked me in the kidney. By the 3rd night, I was nearly insane from sleep deprivation, pain, and torture. I called one of my friends who's a doctor, in the middle of the night, and I had to go to the hospital. Not good times.
Or when you've barely woken up and do the stretching everyone does, but not properly and now your leg cramps up

Your muscle can only perform ONE task. Force it to do the opposite by pointing your toe. I assure you relief will arrive in seconds. "DRIVE through the pain" by stepping on the gas pedal.
Y'know, it's really considerate of that truck driver to do that. Firefighters are always having to suit up, hop in a truck, and drive halfway across town to put out fires. It must have been very refreshing to have someone care enough to simply bring the fire to them instead. Very kind guy. I don't know why more people don't do this.

My mom taught me a trick years ago for leg cramps, and it still works: stand on your toes with the leg that's cramping and slowly lower your heel to the floor so it's forcing that calf to stretch and it will work it out. Also, drink enough electrolytes and potassium. Any sports drink will help. Finally, if you are on medications, check if muscle cramps/spasms are a known side effect. If so, work with your doctor to try to find an alternative medication. Edit: Some good advice in these comments as well! As for having the morning cramps, stretch your leg and deliberately push your heel away from you (your toes towards you). You will be forcing it to stretch that calf that way. Just go slow and steady. Also, if this happens a lot, you should also cut down on any alcohol and/or caffeine consumption; both dehydrate you and that is a big cause of muscle cramps, too. If all else fails, have your iron and magnesium levels checked. You might just need a supplement added to your diet. Cramps are so painful. I hope this helps someone!

Magnesium supplements have helped me. Been taking 200 mg / day for 4 years and I haven't had a severe cramp. Occasionally, minor ones crop up, but they are manageable.
Yes, I drink electrolytes when I get leg cramps, and it usually cramps because I haven't been drinking enough water during the day.
i'd guess the guy with the cramp was moderately dehydrated so this is great advice.
@@savage22bolt32 you should only be taking magnesium when you feel like cramps are near/exhausted. You shouldn't eat it just because. Drink a glass of Tomato juice instead, and get magnesium if you really need it.

Lil tip for anyone who often gets calf cramps in the middle of the night, stand on it immediately when you start to feel it, it'll stay stiff for a while but it will pass MUCH faster, truly a game changer when I figured that one out, hope it helps someone!

In my experience stretching my leg and pulling the tip of my foot back for a little while works wonders to immediately stop the cramps.

Our physics teacher wanted to conduct an experiment on gravity, he took and stone and held it with a stopwatch in the other hand (to measure the time the stone would take until it hit the ground) out of the classroom window on the 3rd floor. I've had muscle cramps like these my entire life. I honestly don't know what's worse. Being woken up by cramps in 3-4 muscles at once or finally working them out and being too amped up/afraid to go back to sleep. I've torn 5 muscles in the last three years. I have yet to be diagnosed for the cramps themselves but my doctor believes it's tied to having Celiac and Microscopic Colitis undiagnosed for most of my life. Since drastically changing my diet (cutting out 90% of all food) they have eased up a bit. I've tried every supplement you can think of. High potassium/magnesium diets and drink ~5 gallons of water a week if not more. The worst are cramps you can't really stretch. Neck, chest, face, etc. The ones in my chest get so tight I can't breath. I basically hold the top of my bedroom door just to keep my airway open when I have them. In 2020 and 2021 I would have hundreds of them every day varying in severity. When I am awake I can normally catch them before they get bad. In the worst case they can last hours with my longest single flare up lasting nearly 7 hours straight. Both legs seized up from the ankle to my thigh (at least 6 muscles total) and would not release. As soon as I'd work one out I'd get a cramp elsewhere. They're brutal. I wouldn't wish them upon anyone.
