In this video, I show you how to properly paint a wheel using spray paint. You can really get excellent results with the right preparation and a lot of patience. (FYI, if you get a little bit of over-spray on the tire, you can carefully rub it off with some sandpaper ;)

Here is how they look TWO YEARS LATER: bit.ly/2Zcjm8P
on jah bro?
Im doing, mine as im,writing this i have 3coats of paint..so no wet sanding needed before applying the clear, coat? I have 2000 grit..so im assuming not?
How many cans of spray paint will I need for 4, 18" rims?
@@gdoubler81 i just did mine..with noVIDEO but i have before n,after pics..2cans..one clear..go to bear metal with a wire brush on drill,,dont worry about grooves,,just do 3-4coats..lite lite medium,thick...wait a day clear..if rough,dont matter...wax after.no,primer,needed..1can per 2rims
Thanks for the video and more importantly thanks for the update. Like/Sub
Great job! Little tip for you. Before spraying, put the cans in a bucket of warm water for a few mins. Helps thin the paint for a better spray.
Thank you
Yes spray pattern way better.
Thank you v much. 2 years later and still helping
@@HalenTaylor02 some questions timeless and other people read them. 😃
Brilliant tip !
“Looks like someone tried cleaning it with oven cleaner or something” lmao sound like you know what and who did that 😂😂
@dltablet794 you're terrible😂
Lmfaoooo
Actually he says it was that way when his mom bought the car........so.....
Leopard Cup Pup Kryky that’s much worse! He LIED,,,
@@leopardcubpupkryky6940 Yeah and I can say I'm an astronaut but we all know that's not true 😂
Painted four wheels after watching your video - followed it to the letter. That was two years ago. They still look GREAT!!! Going to do more now - watching your video again so I get it done right!!
You don’t have to sand the rims do I to paint em gloss black ?
@@memesyandhorrorshorts Gotta do it. Sanding helps the first layer of paint stick to the metal. It's a pretty important step for most painting jobs.
Quick question, how do you clean your rims once you've painted them?
@@fabiopasquale1098 I just clean mine with whatever soap I'm using when I wash my car.
I can honestly say you achieved exactly what i was hoping to see, great prep and paint application, well done.
This is my longest video yet, but I had a lot of things I wanted to cover to ensure you get the best results with your next spray paint project. Big shout out to my dad for helping me film this one!
Justin Buice how do i know what grit sand paper to use?got a 17 mazda 3 aluminum sikver rims like those
Justin Buice wasup with them skinny ass skinny jeans tho ? Lol
Hi Justin, excellent work right there. I'd like to try it as well. Could you please list all the products you used I couldn't see them properly on the video? You may add the photos of these products as well. Thanks
Justin Buice you didn’t do the inner side poor workmanship
@@trickym5748 Obviously he chose *NOT* to do the inside, but what he *DID* do (and that's the only think you can comment on), was done well. You were either visiting this video to learn *HOW* to do it to get "tips/help/ideas/etc", or you just wanted to weigh in with a critical comment. Which was it?
Dude that must have made an awesome mothers day gift. You did an excellant job
+kid stang2 thanks! She loved it!
Hey Justin, you are so spot on - prep work is the foundation and will reflect in the finished product no matter what you do. Nice job, thanks for sharing.
Thank you! Now I know how to customize my wheels without paying an arm for customization! Rose gold for me yas!! Gorgeous wheels man!
Y people don't like when other people do good in something or in life this guy did a great job in how to make ur rims fresh n how to do it yourself hes not selling u anything or say you obligated to do it n like always got the heaters talking 💩 if you do it better do a video to help others to be a master like you.
WELL SAID....HE DID A GREAT JOB, NOW I KNOW EXACTLY HOW TO DO MY WHEELS, AND DIDN'T EVEN KNOW SONEX NOR THE RIGHT WHEEL GLOSS, NOW I KNOW THANK YOU.... JUSTIN...!
TiTo Cane K STFU Tito!🤫
Steve Lapierre how the hell could you not know how to respray a wheel ffs
TiTo Cane K Thea heaters😀🤔😀😁like from the sandlot
TiTo Cane K I said the same thing man!! This is a good video!!!!
Justin, thanks for keeping things simple and easy. Like others said, this is a DIY job.. who cares about the inside of the wheel. Its not like you painted a totally different color! Keep it up man!
I just learned something today! I never knew this could be done.
This has really helped me I seen a lot of people going on about etch primer and it get really confusing but on my wheels I’m not planning on going back to bare metal at all so thank you so much for this video and they still look great 2 years later as I have seen on your other video definitely a new subscriber
Absolutely stunning job man. I've only seen such fine lines sprayed with a gun, never a can... you've definitely earned a subscriber.
Nice job bro. Just an added tip.... put your cans in a bucket of HOT water to help the paint flow better. Over all Nice how to.
Shawn Williams Finally someone who says something positive and helps others, thanks
nice tip - thanks!

Great tip, thanks! I did that and it helped a lot.
Wow! I never heard of that haha going to definitely try this next time I go out tagging!
What a fantastic result. It looks like a totally different rim from when you started, I bet your mum was pleased. Great work mate.
Really helpful!! Thanks for not dragging it out. Very informative in the right amount of time..... definitely subscribing!! Keep doing good work!
Dude, really good video. Well done with everything. It was very helpful!
Great job and now I know how to get my rims ready for painting thanks to you very helpful video thanks a lot.
This is the best rim spray paint tutorial on KZhead. Thanks! I will attempt painting my rims black
Wow! This is the best video I have seen yet. This has given me the confidence to restore my wheels. Great video!
You seem like a chill dood
Thank you! Finally someone else knows that it's all in the prep no matter how much you spend on the paint
Wow, great job of restoration, and clear, concise instruction. Thank you.
Great job !!! You covered every single aspect of the entire process.👍
Nicely done, man! 👍🏻
+BMW Fanatic thanks!
Wicked nice job buddy. Love guys who take care of their Mom’s 👍🏻
Thanks!
Such a huge improvement. Thought I was going to have to buy new rims. Thanks for posting!
Thanks for a thorough video on how to re-do stock aluminum wheels on the cheap. I just paid $1300 CAD to have my 1995 LS400 wheels re-done but at least I can do my spare tire wheel myself because of your video. Now I know how.
Great video and advice! Another way to minimize drips is to start a spray off the wheel and end the spray off the wheel. I think it is important how to minimize any chemicals going directly to the environment. Why did you not use an etching primer? Overall a very helpful video. Thanks for putting it together.
Nice job Justin. May I be so bold as to recommend you cover the valve before spraying. With annoying little shaped objects like that, I would sometimes cover with Vaseline or similar that can be wiped off after.
It is covered with tape.
Enjoyed your demonstration of the wheel enhancement procedure. I have been pondering to touch up my Hyundai wheels, ponder no more thanks and keep up the good work.
That's pretty good! Great way to restore silver alloy wheels that aren't too badly damaged. Very simple way to keep wheels looking fresh and clean!
Thanks Justin. For the kerb damage I use a two pack adhesive like Loktite. It is easy to apply, drys really hard and sands down perfectly - you can easily paint over the sanded down surfaces.
Great informative video Justin, if all young people present themselves like you have in this video, then the world would be a better place.
I appreciate that!
Prep is EVERYTHING! Great video.
Hey man, just wanted to say your tutorial really helped me out! Thanks!
Great job! And I'm not just talking about the outcome, I'm talking about from start to finish. 👍 Too bad the Michigan salt will probably chew them up like the back of that Grand Caravan. 🥴
Those wheels came out gorgeous my bro . Thank you for this video , I can't wait to paint my cars wheels .
Very bright ideas and very good son. So amazing when we have patience to do things and make it a fun thing while working on it. God bless you.
Wow I'm blown away by your fantastic results ! Hopefully I try & duplicate this on my 8 year old very shabby looking silver painted aluminum wheels.....
Great vid! The ONLY thing I would do differently is put the wheel on a couple of saw horses or some sort of a table to elevate it to waist high to make it more comfortable to work on.
That’s what people call constructive criticism!
That sounds like old guy knowledge. Great.
Damn that's looks awesome bro. And you did it for ur mom. 👍
Really nice and brief video for the instructions.
i am using sonaks since 1998 and still . never let me down.great product
wheel looks awesome, great job! I saw that paint at the autoparts store this past weekend and need to do my truck rims when I do the brakes and rotors this spring. Thanks????
great job looks brand new
+collier martin thanks!
Brilliant stuff justin! Bought my car with all four rims with curb rash and will definitely try this out, just hope i get the right raw materials.
Watched your video once, subscribed straight away, and totally NOT regretting it. Great job, brilliantly shot, and straight to the point. Fare play mate 👍🙏👌💯
Why would you “regret” subscribing to someone? Just click the button a second time, lol
nicely done. important: tape/mask the lug nut surfaces so the lug nuts/bolts torque down correctly.
Does not change anything... Been painting since 25years. Worked at 2 different bodyshops even at dealerships...nobody does that...
@@upnorthviking823 then you got it wrong all those years. : )
Nice .!.!.!.! lol... I would have been happy as hell the why they looked just with the cleaning...!!! Great Job,,, Thanks for posting.... My wife’s rims needs this Bad.... I guess, I know what I’m doing next weekend... lol 👍👍👍
By far the best rattlecan results I've seen on wheels. Great work man.
Thank you!
I guess I might just have to give it a try, I think with your technique are fantastic my Acura TL will be fresh again. GREAT VIDEO!!
wow that turned out really good!
Thank you!

Hhahahhaah. Dirty mind
Hell yeah!
Lmao
Great job Justin!! This was a totally excellent tutorial!! Good video work by Dad too!!
I painted the wheels on my car and they look awesome. Thanks for the DIY video!
Wow! Very cool! Thanks for showing us this video. What's the music in the background? Sounds cool too!
You did a good job and saved your mom some coins. 💯👍🏼😊
What a cool dude with relaxed attitude
Class vid mate. Clear and concise and no waffle. Spot on. McIntyre Scotland
Americans says "Hunday", we say " Hi-yun -die". 👍👌 Great vid, Justin. Always helpful advice.👍I
If you have to sand down to bare aluminum for any repairs, make sure you use a good etching primer to make sure the paint will stick.
dude thats beautiful work
Amazing and through explanation about the paint process! Good job!
Wow i seriously needed this video
+Alex good timing 😎
Excellent video loved it
One of the best videos, excellent finish.
I appreciate your patience. I would have stopped after the dishwash part...looks ok to me 🙂
Great video Justin have you seen chris fix's video on alloy wheel restoration? question : did you primer the wheel after sanding?
+Raymond perez thanks! I didnt prime because I didnt sand all the way through the paint. The only time you really need primer is if you sanded down to the bare aluminum
Excellent Job
+Rory Maynor thanks!
Great job on the editing, commentary, and the subject matter! And the wheels turned out well!
Thank you!
@@justinbuice nice job bro
Great video, extremely informative where the prep is concerned. I painted some wheels a while back and got crappy results. Now I know why.
Glad I could help!
clean af.
thanks!
It looks really good! I've done the same method for painting some old wheels as well, but what I find annoying is that once you get rocks or other stuff hitting the paint it creates nasty scratches that almost "dents" the new paint. Is there any ways around this? Thanks
I know I am 3 years late, but I personally use 2k clear coat and it makes the wheels pretty scratch resistant.
Perfect. I didn’t want a painted look so was hesitant to try...this looks factory clean. Nice job
Thanks!
Thanks, dude. Followed your instructions step by step, amazing results!
Awesome!
huge tip i learned spray painting, never aim the beginning of the spray or end of the spray on what your painting.. start on the side and end on the side. or youll get drips or splatter or uneven paint
How many cans did you go through for all four rims
Very nice & informative video dude. Explained everything perfectly, quality video, awesome results. Great job👍
Great vid thanks for the advice. Might be worth starting with the finer grade sandpaper just in case the damage is light enough
So, when that pesky grimy break dust accumulates on that new painted rim in about one years time, how do you get it off without ruining the paint job? Can you spray that Sonax cleaner on that painted rim, or will that cleaner ruin the paint job?
You can use sonax or any wheel cleaner on them
Hi, nice video. Here is a spray paint tip: Do not paint your wheels laying down, the spray box work's much better in a vertical position, so stand up your wheels. That will make it more handy to reach hard to get places to.😊
Higher chance of drip
@@NATURALGAMING???? with that logic you shouldn’t spray paint anything vertical lol there shouldn’t be drips if you’re doing a light coat
@@jaz8615 I agree with you but remember wheels are different then your typical object because they must be perfect
@@NATURALGAMING anything on a car has to be perfect put there are still professional paint places that will paint with the panels on the car but alr
@@jaz8615 yeah Ik wym but we’re talking spray can brother
Great works and beautiful awesome result.... i do like that. Honestly speaking and thinking of going into that now because in my country our population is like 200 million people and you could only imagine how many are mobile out of all these people and what great job will be on ground for the jobless youths. i embrace this wonderful idea or innovation. Am tolu from Nigeria , in West Africa.
Excellent vid! Clear, detailed step-by-step instructions. Just what I needed. Many thanks, man.
Glad I could help :)
When you have a gold front lawn, that's when you know you've made it, but silver isn't bad either, lol.
This is one long RIM JOB
Samuel Belay that's the best kind!
Bruh 😆
Kay Belay 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
💀💀💀
And remember, before you start the rim job, clean it really good for best results!
Justin, well explained and results were amazing. Made me motivated to tackle this on my wheels.
Thank you!
Justin, nice job and tutorial. I have a 2001 Yukon XL with aluminum wheels. I'm sure they have never been done, but it's on the agenda for this summer. thanks
A little tip for ya get some dollar store envelope they slide right in the crack no need for tape and bag
Index cards 😌
Wheel looks great you painted like a pro. I like your video presentation as well and nice music.
Justin, Great job. I have hated my rims for years. My car was a drug dealers car who ran it through everything from the looks of those rims. It was a police auction car and your video was proof that I really can do something with those rims. Thanks very much for the help
Hey man primer?
I used the primer that was already on the wheel rather than sanding down to bare aluminum and re-priming. The primer used in the manufacturing process is probably more durable than the spray primer you will find in a store anyway.
Jacob Roe u only need primer if bare metal is exposed
I slot playing cards around rim
That is an awsome idea! Masking is a pain in the ass
Just did this on my 335i’s wheels, they look BRAND NEW. Couldn’t be happier!
This is really helpful. Thank you for the details in the video
Should of clean the back of the rim and painted the back of the rim it would of looked a whole lot better...but it still looks great 👍
Thanks!
Pro tip: when you're taking a break of finishing up with spraying, turn the can upside down and spray until the atomiser is clear. This will save you having to scrape off old/dried paint from the nozzle
James Useless, only do that when you are going to store the can for days or weeks. Otherwise you are taking all the pressure out and then when the pressure goes away you will end up with paint inside of the can and won't be able to take it out.
Or just wipe the nozzle off after you're done with a coat.
You are a very good son. Your momma must be proud of you always. Very useful info for the DIY first timers. Gotta tape that valve stem though. Been painting wheels since the 70’s. Products are so much better these days for this type of job.
I try!
Wow beautiful! I love aluminum wheels when they're clean. I have the same burn issue on my genesis wheels
