All technologies are manipulating you and the only way to combat them is to know yourself.
In today’s episode of Impact Theory, I’m joined by Dr. Alok Kanojia to discuss how to get out of the TIGHT HOLD technology has on us so we can stop being lazy and addicted and instead have a meaningful life and healthy relationships with REAL PEOPLE (not AI).
Dr. K is known as “the healthy gamer”. When he was in college he realized he was addicted to video games. He moved to India to become a monk and ultimately went to medical school and became a psychiatrist. Today, he combines Eastern therapies (like yoga, meditation and Ayurveda) with classic psychotherapy to help people deal with technology addictions like video games, porn, etc.
We are going deep into topics like:
- How & why technology is so addicting
- Understanding WHERE desire comes from
- How attachment & baggage are holding you back
- What porn does to your brain
- Men’s responsibility to respond to domestication, women’s expectations, and suffering
- Why frame of reference, reality, and focusing on yourself are the way out
- The 1 key to getting over addiction
- Tips to overcome technology’s addictive nature
- The power of detachment and transcending achievement
- Righteous fury, comparisons, and the ego conditioning your mind
- The power of meditation and empathy
Technology addiction is real, and it won’t be easy to overcome, but this episode gives you the keys to what you can do to combat the brain-numbing, addictive nature of social media, video games, and even dating apps.

Powerful Insights From Dr. K:
"It's not willpower, it's awareness of a conflict that we subjectively experience as willpower, which is kind of hard to understand."
"So we see this where there's like, basically you need a stronger and stronger stimulus to chase that old dopaminergic rush..."
"And I think at some point someone is going to combine all of this stuff into a girlfriend that throws temper tantrums, that is there for you, maybe even kind of pretend cheats on you, and then has all this psychologically activating stuff along with physical feedback, flashlights, virtual reality, it'll all get integrated, and then the human race is fucked."
"The basic reason I think mental health is moving in the wrong direction, is that the institutional powers that understand human behavior, our understanding of human behavior on the scientific or population level, has grown so sophisticated, but our understanding of ourselves within us has come to an all-time low."
"I know this sounds crazy, but the moment that human beings start to say, I don't need to be heard, it's okay for me to not get my needs met, and I'm willing to still support someone else, that's the moment things will turn around."
"Because what happens is in puberty, you have a fundamental change of your biology, of your hormones, of your tissues, of your brain, that allows you to have an experience that you could literally would be impossible for you to have before. So in meditation, the process of doing esoteric Sadhana's spiritual practice, when you do this, you go through something like puberty, but in the non material plane, in the spiritual realm, you go through a transformation that allows you to experience things that were literally unfathomable before."

  • I love your podcasts, Tom! But I must admit, among the luminaries and brilliant minds that you’ve had on your show, this one was my favorite to date. I was looking forward to one day witness someone open your biologically focused awareness into a more sophisticated spiritual understanding. Up until this interview, the guests you had on the show, even the world renown ones, were basic. Dr. K’s insights and explanations were much more accurate. I’m looking forward to watch your curiosity unfolding into the deeper mind. Full disclosure, I too studied with an enlightened Buddhist master for 15 years and am an ordained Buddhist monk. My teacher taught many eastern and western spiritual traditions and techniques for opening of the mind and intuition, so I think I understand the challenge of reconciling physical and spiritual insights and practices, including meditation, business, relationships and health. But I’m super excited for you to receiving the insights from Dr. K. and looking forward to more of your awakening.. or at least considering an exploration in that direction. It was a real treat! • That was amazing! I even took notes when it was about creating a life worth living! Share them here with ya all: - A life of neutrality and nothing → Life with no goals, where you just exist in the present, you focus on action, life is just meant to be lived (appreciate the “now” is the essence of it) - Don't attach to “wanting to be detached” → Decide what is worth suffering for and attach to it by all means. Accept the suffering for these parts of life - if necessary. Still detach from most stuff, that is not as important to you. → “The acceptance of attachment is detachment” - "Can you be okay with being unfullfilled?" - “It's when we are ignorant of our attachments, that we really get into problems” - If you can say: "I don't need my needs fullfilled first, I might go down, but I'll try to save as many people as possible first", that's when thinks start to become better in the world. It was important to me, cause like many young people out there, I often feel like there is just no chance in life.

  • I love a lot of the Buddhist mentality he uses. It seems counterintuitive, but there's definitely something very freeing in realizing that you have very little control over what happens to you. That doesn't mean you get to stop trying to do things that are rewarding in some way, but it also means that you don't take your situation "personally" as much - ruminating about "why me?" or "why can't I be as lucky as that guy??" We can make improvements in our outward appearance, even in our education/career/psychology/etc., but at the end of the day, that doesn't prevent us from experiencing loss, depression, anxiety, sickness, and myriad other forms of suffering. That's called life, and the only "antidote" to that is not living. Even "enlightenment" doesn't necessarily end suffering, it just doesn't make it an issue that requires us to try to avoid it at all costs...

    @dvdmon@dvdmon2 ай бұрын

    • I'd argue that it doesn't stop you from feeling "pain" (whether physically or mentally) but it does prevent you from "suffering". I heard this story (Buddhist, if I remember correctly) that I find explains this well: Two guys are on the battlefield, one of them gets hit by an arrow, he survives but gets angry and sad while wondering "why me?", "why didn't my friend get hit instead?", "it's not fair!"... This is his second arrow. The 1st arrow was the actual "pain" that was caused by an outside event, the 2nd arrow was the "suffering" he was inflicting on himself. So while we cannot avoid "pain" in life, we can learn to avoid "suffering".

  • I'm here as a regular viewer of Dr. K but not Tom, so it's my first time watching the podcast. I wanted to say I really did enjoy the interruptions and attempts to summarize Dr.K because that way Tom showed a genuine need and effort to understand it and compare it to his existing beliefs. I've seen many who'll get completely cought up in everything that's being said without really questioning it, but I believe it's in questioning it that we'll get an even better understanding, both Tom and his audience. When he speaks back what he understood, he gives Dr.K an opportunity to adjust and explain further or as he did a few times, let us know that Tom's understanding was not precise but fine for now so those who want to venture deeper can take that with a grain of salt and dive into those bits later themselves.

Shorter lifespans are also a consequence of the current lifespan where everyone’s in the house and detached. Women will find someone to communicate with everyday because that’s how they survive, but we all win when we set our standards to finding a person we trust who we can take care of in some way. Men are designed to compete and spread their genes. Women are designed the select the best genes. This is widely why women dominantly control any market they pay attention to en masse. I discovered healthygamerGG 3 years ago, and I also love Tom, so that made it incredible and I was really interested of the conversation the whole time. Also the fact that I discovered the episode so early, made it more special to watch. I also pushed myself through some resistance to watch the whole thing, but I'm suprised that there weren't that much resistance. Thank you for this upload!

  • What a great guest. One of the best you've had. It's very unfortunate that most of the information and ideas that Alok talks about goes way over your head. You do a dis-service to your listeners by paraphrasing or summarizing his information into 1-2 sentences. When you do this, most guests will say they agree with your summary as a sign of respect to you. But your paraphrasing is completely wrong in all of his points he makes.

  • Porn addiction definitely does affect relationships negatively. Over time a lot of people become hyper sexualized and experience less attraction to their partner because of the addiction and this can lead to all kinds of issues like lack of intimacy, not having sex anymore, fantasizing about being with other people, comparing partner to unrealistic sexual standards, even escalating to the point of beginning to see escorts or have affairs etc. A staggering amount of addicts will confess that they have ruined relationships because of the insatiable nature of the addiction. It's a terrible addiction to suffer from and the most shameful. I'm happy that the public discourse is changing thanks to Dr. K and other people sharing knowledge about it and that more people will begin to seek help because of it.
