Chess has a deep history in New York City. Champions and Amateurs from all over the world have graced the iconic concrete tables of Washington and Union Square and beyond. Episode 2 of URBAN RECREATION uncovers the stories behind the street chess players taking not just your money but a bit of your dignity with every move. The street chess community is part game and part con, but good or bad, chess is part of the NYC fabric as much as any other game out there.

    • Thelunatic Loggers That's why red bull is next level shit. Instead of sponsoring sports that have millions on millions of fans and sponsors, they back those with little to no recognition

  • Nothing could ever make chess exciting to non-players. The rules are too opaque to make it a spectator sport. Maybe if there were mini-explosives under some of the squares?

    @ChrisPage68@ChrisPage688 жыл бұрын
    • +PageMonster I'm not really a player but I watch it a lot thanks to youtube. Kingscrusher is one of my favourite channels because the analysis of games explains them. It's a fantastic spectator sport if it's presented properly, but yeah, I don't think people realise that it can be

      @minch333@minch3338 жыл бұрын
    • +PageMonster You could not be more misinformed. This type of play is exactly what makes chess exciting to non-players. 40 thousand people watched this and gave it an 80% approval rating. Are the "moves" to Tricking explained, or street skating?

  • That's incredible. Is this real or is Redbull hyping it up too much. Either way, I would never want to go against these guys.

    @nugenki@nugenki8 жыл бұрын
    • Nugenrules it's real man. Red bull obviously adds some hype to it, but go to Washington Park and see for yourself, shit gets intense, tables always full. The players can look like bums but there's more than meets the eye.

  • I notice chess in New York has no problem with race, gender or age. They all compete in relative harmony. That is because being a human individual is not about race or gender. Being human is about the individual mind,---as all of mankind should be. :)
