  • Very honest interview from Fritz. Imagine you are one of the world's top players, you feel you're giving everything and playing well, at the top of your game, and the guy in front just toys with you and hits winner after winner and has an answer to every ball you send over the net. It must feel pretty bad hey. Good sportmanship to recognise this.

  • It's hard to process Carlos is still only 19, and getting better seemingly on a monthly basis - the Carlos that played yesterday was a much more complete player than the one that won the tournament last year. The two most noticeable improvements being his serve - hasn't dropped a set in The Sunshine Double - with both added speed (cranking it up to 138mph) and placement, plus a newfound patience on court. He is now willing to get deeper into rallies prior to going on the attack, it lessens the number UEs and ultimately puts more pressure on his opponent to win the point outright - which is no easy task against the game's best retriever who also loves to hit the ball early and hard, returning many a shot back with interest. In general just a more mature player...who's still a physical, technical, *and* tactical marvel with every other shot in his arsenal plus court-coverage worthy of The Road Runner. Thrilling to watch the rise of a potential new legend - if nothing else his timing is impeccable.

    @OwnRules1@OwnRules1 Жыл бұрын
    • Beautifully summarized, if I may add he doesn't blast every ball at 100 mph or chase down every ball. As a matter of fact, his average mph on ground strokes has been lower than opponents on both wings and he goes big when only he needs to. As you do aptly put it he is astonishingly improving with every match. The placement and accuracy improvement on his serve in a year which took others a long time to perfect. Also , the scary thing is he can still get better over time

    • @@z1az285 Indeed - three years ago, in his thrilling entrance into the tennis limelight, he beat Tsipsipas mostly on grit & blasting from both wings. Now he chooses much more carefully when to flash his power - enough to make his opponents both respect and back off his ball, so he can finish them with a drop shot or half volley. It's a thing of beauty, needing as much tennis IQ as physical prowess. And yes, it's hard to imagine the finished product - here's hoping injuries respect him so he can develop all of that incredible potential. May we all be around to see it.

  • Fritz met 3 goats when they were pretty out of their peak really. So comparing their play to Alcaraz isnt rly valid. The thing that made them special is, they maintained that level of play for such a long time, that they caught pretty much 3 tennis generations. Alcaraz has great tools, he is the best currently, but lets give him 15 years to overcome what they did. As it is, he surely is the best now, maybe if he played Roger 4 years ago, he would defeat him, but its the time they were able to keep their level that made them real goats

I would actually argue that the big three up until this year were closer to their peak than Carlos is right now (especially Novak he basically still is in his peak). Alcaraz is only 19 and most players hit their peak level at 25, so I would say that the comparison is unfair towards Carlos not the other way around.

I am not a hater.... Since i saw him i liked him(didn't like his pointing to his ear to audience but that's nothing). You must have that.... What i dont like is signs in audience like KING, he will get over 30 GS etc, waay to early. Players will adjust their game against him. And comparation with game Taylor had with Djokovic is nonsense. Was it final, first round etc...

    • Man no one that says Carlos is going to win 20/more slams really understand tennis and how difficult is to win a GS. But I think that's no debate anymore he can reach a legend level. We're comparing a rising star to goat's of tennis with story made. Alcaraz have so much to show yet and I think he will.

  • Carlos' favorite player is Roger. His style of play is like Roger's. Attack with zero time. I'm surprised Fritz didn't compare the two. They play the same way. Roger had a better serve and better footwork. When Carlos improves those areas, he might only lose a few matches a year. He has to stay injury free. His serve has been on fire the last couple of tourneys, but his first serve placement is definitely something he needs to focus on. The ground game is there and not going anywhere. Total treat to watch this incredible player.

    • Pretty much the one thing I think Alcaraz could improve on is playing in a way that keeps the points short and conserves energy whenever possible, like Federer did late in his career. His insane speed and stamina win him tons of points anyway, but it'd be a lot better for his longevity if he only fully drew on those attributes when absolutely necessary.

  • Tough question for these pros who all want to be in that conversation. Fritz was extremely gracious in answering this with class. Alcaraz is legit but has a long way to go to be mentioned along with the big 3. Nadal out of the top 10 for the 1st time since 2005? That kind of staying power sets a very high bar.

  • It's not just fans of the game but the players themselves that praise alcaraz's abilities. That's when you know a player is special. I'm so glad Carlitos has the mentality and maturity to match the skills. Some young people can often be led astray. This is all thanks to Juan Carlo and his team

  • I saw Taylor win his first challenger tournament at my club in Sacramento in 2015. He was 17 at the time with a lot of buzz around him as he had just won the US Open juniors. He was very polite and humble at our small club, and showed so much excitement when he won the tournament. The only weakness in his game has been his athleticism, which he has improved greatly. Unfortunately, he’ll never be able to match Alcaraz in that department and unlikely to beat him. Tiafoe and Paul are the only American players who can hang with Alcaraz athletically. I feel bad for these players who have endured the big 3 for years and now may have to face the big 1 in Alcaraz. Major titles are gonna be hard to win in the coming years for people not named Alcaraz.

    @stephen1462@stephen1462 Жыл бұрын
    • As much as I like Alcaraz and want him to keep winning (heck, I'm Spanish), I think saying major titles will be hard to win for people not named Alcaraz is a bit of an exaggeration. He's certainly the guy to beat right now, and his potential for further growth given his young age is kind of scary, but I think there's players in the circuit with a good enough game to challenge him and become actual rivals over the years. To name a couple, it is my impression that Sinner is quite close to another breakthrough, and their matches have already been quite competitive so far. Rune also used to get the best of him back when they played Challenger, and if he manages to improve his mental game and consistency of play, he will also be a force to be reckoned with.

  • No way you can compare to the Big 3....especially when it comes to the Grand Slams. Those are best 3 out of 5 slog fests. Sure he won US Open in 2022....but no Joker, Nadal or Fed along with a pretty favorable draw. I think it's ludicrous to even fathom a comparison. Not only did these 3 dominate Grand Slams, they won almost everything else (Master 1000s, etc...). It's great to see someone who appears to be separating himself from his peers but let's see what happens when he plays Joker in a big tourney when it matters (Joker return of serve probably one of best ever & he can dictate pace of play whenever he wants along with hitting with depth & running everything down).

    • Amin! At last, someone who speaks reason. Beating Tiafoe and Ruud in Slams and destroying third-tier opponents in Masters isn't in the same stratosphere as playing one Big 3 member per Slam + Murray, Wawrinka, Delpo, to name a few. His talent is undeniable but let's see how efficient his aggressive approach will be against an elite defender who constantly hits deep and penetrating like Djokovic on hard courts and grass. Or against Rafa's top spins on clay. (although Rafa is pretty much a shell of himself at this point) There's a reason why Federer's attacking game wasn't as nearly as efficient against Nadal and Djokovic as vs other players. Yes, he can turn an impressive number of neutral points into winners, but he hasn't really been tested in Bo5 matches thus far. After all, he did lose to a 20% Rafa in last year's IW and barely won against 50% Djokovic in Madrid.

Basically, he fine tunes his machine learning model with each match and improves for the next one. His serve placement for example.
